@bartholemew:
The UN have been real slow and acting like assholes during this revolution
Tell me from what you're seeing that folks in your region are getting reaaaally pissed off at Russia and China. I would love that to be true. Russia in particular has it coming to them (China is just obsessed with being SUPER neutral mostly), they're making lots of the same mistakes the US historically has made in the mid-east. I'd love the ball of regional asshole to pass to them, particularly since they really do still behave like an empire.
Be glad to have you on our side against that giant mafia state and their dictator support club.
Putin's trying to buy up Chrissie's country after her useless Moscow educated president fucked up their economy. We can't let that happen brother.
Aside from the Russians and Chinese though, the UN staff is kinda lame too yes.
Annan is really lousy at coming up with plans for peace I've noticed (his plan for Cyprus was pretty dumb). Not that peace is possible until one side is crushed here, which the UN seems to want to pretend isn't the reality. The Assad regime won't concede anything to the rebels, and the rebels won't stop fighting after all that's been done to them.
Thankfully the rebels are winning I think. Damascus is under heavy fighting right now, clearly things are leaning down rebel lane.
Still Syria will have a worse mess than Libya in so many ways, I'm still scared of potential ethnic cleansing/genocide against the Alawites once the Sunnis win out. But as I've always said, the UN is actually good at aftermaths generally. It's handling stuff as it's happening that the UN is terrible at.
The reach of the West actually really caring and trying to avoid chaos and bloodshed has gone farther. Used to end at the Iron Curtain, then it extended to the USSR's old lines (why Bosnia and Kosovo got such high quality attention). Seems you guys are moving behind those lines now, with Libya getting NATO aid and there being such attention to Syria.
Unfortunately the Saudis own the Arabian Peninsular ballpark and have the whole world by the balls because of oil and being the anti-Iran, so Bahrain…well you know how that went. A shame.
My point is, the UN has made sure that Kosovo and Bosnia have kept from exploding again since the 90's, and dissuaded the Albanians in Macedonia from keeping up their fighting there. I'm hoping this means that a really good UN peacekeeping force or somesuch will be put in place in Syria for the aftermath to make sure things don't get all genocidey or violent in general. It would really stabilize things. Probably Turkey could play a major role in that too, they would want to as well considering it's their border.
The OTHER cool thing from this is Lebanon might be made much better from the fall of the Syrian regime and Hezbollah. Much more peaceful. Syria basically raped them for almost two decades by meddling in their civil war and politics. Now....heh heh.
