I am painfully reminded of the time some dumbass on a Dilandau fanpage blurted out his entire history without any warning whatsoever.
That's when I began to hate anime fans.

Well, ysn, you make fatal mistakes in your reasoning: First, you pay to see a movie. At least for me that makes it somewhat reasonable to at least know what I'm dealing with before slapping down those bucks. But, I know One Piece. I love One Piece.
Also, movie trailers do not lay down every single little juicy tidbit and crucial plot development in the slightest. They merely serve to give a little taste as to what the movie's about. Spoilers do no such thing. They do exactly that; spoil. And as for me, I don't like being spoiled, because it takes away all the surprise and excitement I might have during the reading of the chapter. It's like, if I'm told beforehand the main character in the series dies all of a sudden in the last episode, am I still surprised when it happens? Of course not. Depending on its execution, maybe a ltitle, but there is no arguing the shock factor is far, far less. And me, I like being surprised. Spoilers can tell you what happens, and you can feel the surprise and shock at plot development and everything, but you miss out on the full experience (Being everything else in the chapter, HQ artwork etc.). Then you get the full experience, but you know what happens and you miss out on the surprise. So basically, you miss out. Twice.
well, it's a personal thing so i'm not gonna argue. still, i think it's you who is missing out. Any work of art is much more than the outside surface. the spoilers allow you to delve deeper, to imagine on your own. I enjoy reading books, have read thowsands and the greatest thing often is not the story i find the author telling, but the one he did not. The one i thought will happen, but does not, or happens but noth the way i expected it etc. It's interesting and important for me.
Well actually there´s not much to argue about because the author has a clear idea of how to introduce stuff to the readers. It follows a clear pattern of rising tention, suprises, turning points and climxes. Spoilers take stuff out of context and ruin the authors intention of how he wants to introduce stuff to the readers.
If the author himself would give aways some pages then it would be a different story because, but obviously he doesn´t want to do it because he puts lot of work into writing his stuff to make a full impact on the reader.
hm, mangas are published as they are not for creative reasons, but for economic ones. and as i said, the nice thing is trying to figure out just what exactly will the author do, based on the limited information you have. Trying to construct a whole chapter out of the 3 or 4 pages you have is a interesting and cool exercise that should in no way diminish your joy from reading the actual chapter.
I was trying to avoid the spoiler of 401 untill someone blurted it out in K-F's IRC channel..fortunatky he got banned for a bit..
anyway, there is a reason it is called a spoiler, mainly because it spoils the surprise of the upcoming events. If it were something that wasn't going to harm the surprise in the upcoming chapter then it would probably be called something different.
Also, I agree with some of the other people here, i don't think there should be any mention of the future spoiler in the previous chapters thread, at least untill the raw has been released.
You think people who avoid spoilers are missing out? What do we miss out on? The previous chapter gives me plenty enough to imagine on my own. Spoilers actually take away from that, and on top of that, they're often misleading, which can lead to disappointment and confusion. Actually, people who read spoilers miss out on a lot more. Such as the element of surprise and natural flow of how the information was intended to be revealed. There's a difference between previews, or teaser information and spoilers. The previews at the end of a lot of anime episodes are a good example of giving the viewer a taste of what's the come without spoiling the plot. But to be told outright what's going to happen (so and so eats this particular DF, knowing ahead of time who CP9's identity was, etc.), those types of things have no place being spoiled. I seriously get pissed off at people who ask for those types of spoilers because to me that's disrespecting the author's intentions (not to mention ruining a big part of the enjoyment of the surprise). You aren't SUPPOSED to know those things before they happen in the story.

I understand you´re point but still it completely ruins the impact it makes on you. Mog described that very good so there´s no need for me to rewrite it again.
I´m already happy with trying to find explanaitions to fill in the gabs which Oda included within the story itself with all his brilliant foreshadowing that I don´t need to do the same for a couple of out of context pages that take away the element of surprise.
I understand why you like spoilers though, but I prefer to read it the way the author wanted to bring it over. If he wanted to give some bits of information away he would have done so himself, but obviously he didn´t and I´m going to respect that.
Spoilers take stuff out of context and ruin the authors intention of how he wants to introduce stuff to the readers.
QFT
But to be totally fair, so long as people are happy and enjoying the work, I'm sure that makes Oda's work worthwhile.
Not to say I'd be caught dead reading half the story. If I wanted OP to be 'Create Your Own Adventure' I'd write my own story. That leads us to the world of fanfics….and I just don't wanna go there. No offense.
Reading the spoiler for the next chapter is like opening presents before christmas..
Some people will wait and enjoy the day more
While others will open them before hand and kinda ruin what Christmas is about..

I kind of liked that anology, until you put the "and kinda ruin what Christmas is about" part.
But yeah, sometimes people want to know and, thus, they know. They get to go and get the fangirlish "HOLY CRAP"s and "SQUEEE~!!" out of the way, and then when the actual chapter comes out, feel it all over again, though admittedly not as much as a person who isn't spoiled.
But, then again, the person who was spoiled felt the same way when he read the spoiler.
Because, unlike giving away the ending of a seires, a la the Cowboy Bebop example stated earlier, this is only the NEXT CHAPTER. You're seeing it in a day or two anyway, and it's only one part. IT's not the grand ending to a series you're just starting, something that doesn't occur for another 20 episodes.
You know what I mean?
@Bad-Beat:

You know for most chapters I might agree with you; spoilers do take a surprise away and I'm probably going to stop viewing those threads now that we're drawing close to the big event.
On the other hand, 401… man, oh, man, oh, man, oh MAN. I think that chapter was actually better for being spoiled in the way that it was. In my mind, there's such a big twist that taking it out of context only makes it better. Now that I know the major spoiler, I'll be able to enjoy the rest of the chapter simply because I won't be reacting to the kickass
! I don't post spoilers outside of the spoiler thread, so I'm not sure what you're looking for here revelation so much.
Chapter 401 indeed will appease to all of you who are waiting faithfully for the chapter. I garantee: Oda is going to surprise you all. Every single prediction about this event was just wrong!
:)

see that's just spoiler in my opinion…
I think this is just teasing. I have not said anything: I have not said what event, or what prediction. I just said you will be surprised. Where's the spoiler in that? I am teasing, not spoiling you.
your telling people that what everyone has said is wrong, meaning that the ideas people have stored up are false..I'm sure other people can see where I'm coming from..
@Bad-Beat:
see that's just spoiler in my opinion…
I'm not unsympathetic, but that's just a little anal.
well, it may be but if I saw that without seeing the spoiler, in my opinion, I would be highly pissed off at that because I see it as a spoiler.
It's not like I'm having a go at him, I just think we need to establish what can be acceptable in reguards to spoilers.
Oda is going to surprise you all. Every single prediction about this event was just wrong!
Does that mean mine was right since I said, "something unexpected is very likely to happen."
All I can say is this, I dunno about the Internet, but in Japan on Monday mornings, getting up at 7AM and tearing like a bat out of hell down to the convenient store and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with every other person reading, there's just this amazing comraderie knowing you're all reading the same thing at once. That's also why I agree with the 'ruin what Christmas is about' part.
When I read this chapter, I don't wanna rush through any part. I wanna have my socks knocked way the hell off like they have been on days like when Robin's past began, CP9 was revealed (I mean holy shit, I would seriously consider having a brain transplant if I had that puppy spoiled, the expression on my face was priceless) Kaku was introduced ("OH MAN! IT'S THE NEW CREW MEMBER!") Ao Kiji appeared out of fucking nowhere, Foxy showed up, Do Flamingo killed off Bellamy, Luffy and Ener's final showdown. Waiting for AMAZING days like those (I can remember precisely where I was each of those times) makes it worth not reading half the story. I can see why people want to do it, but for me, I like to drink my coffee black as it comes.
Black coffee sucks.
Then again, so does coffee in general.
Tea for the win!
As for spoilers, I don't think I'm missing out by seeing the spoiler threads. I mean, the "HOLY SHIT!!!" you experience is the same one I've ALREADY gone through. So there's really not much difference there, y'know what I mean?
Black coffee sucks.
Then again, so does coffee in general.
I wouldn't know. I never tried it
And you must admit there's a big difference between simply seeing a single image of CP9 standing there maskless and reading through the chapter to see how it leads up to it.
I don't think anyone here is arguing that anything is wrong with spoilers or reading them. I just think some of us find it a more thoroughly enjoyable and wholesome experience to see the product in it's entirety with the intended effect of surprise and suspense rather than:
HERE IT IS
And I'd hope some people can respect that view as well.
@omae:
I wouldn't know. I never tried it
You're lucky, very lucky.
Of which chapter?
Sorry I was away for a bit…. Ch 400 is what I meant
Man! aside from that, it looks like all the fights have been decided!
As far as chopper goes, he will either fight Blueno (who should really have died after whatever crazy AKUMA move Luffy pulled on him) or he will assist either Luffy or Sogeking, my guess anyways...
I MUST RESIST LOOKING AT THE 401 SPOILER!
MUST RESIST SEEING KAKU'S DEVIL FRUIT ABILITY!!
Sorry I was away for a bit…. Ch 400 is what I meant
See this post then:

I enjoy coffee quite a bit. But with cream.
There's degrees of spoilerness. I don't think looking at spoilers for the next chapter is anywhere near as heinous as, for instance, someone who just goes around asking people all kinds of spoilerish questions and reading forum discussions on CP9 when they themselves haven't gotten past Whiskey Peak or something, and continue to do so while not really making much of an effort to catch up with the story. I run into people like that all the time, it drives me nuts. Just read the darn story. -_-

I don't drink anything with caffeine, haven't for years. Even when I did though, I never liked the taste of coffee.

Yeah, that really doesn't make sense seeing as how the entire series is readily available for download.

Well I've been reading One Piece since chapter 340 and I'm collecting Viz manga to catch up with the rest of the story. Right now, I caught up 77% percent of the series. I'm really catching up.
I'm not unsympathetic, but that's just a little anal.
Please respect anal people… they have feelings too, you know.
I, for one, don't want to know anything about the next chapter until it's out. Not even that it will be "surprising" or "great". I know it will. It's One Piece.

ZOMG, quick, tell me Calipha's DF!!!!

I would, but it would be a spoiler
Here's the thing. You lose the suspense when you read spoilers. What if you were watching a show like "24" (Like I am now, don't tell me what happens…) And somebody comes along at tells you the key part of the last episodes. It just destroys all the suspense. Your not getting the whole story with the spoiler, but it's just not as exciting. Or another example. The ending of The Sixth Sense was a real shocker. It can be told in once sentence. Or the infamous spoiler from "The Crying Game".
Basically, if you want to be spoiled, go ahead. But keep it to yourself. Please. Please wait until the chapter has been released before you make pictures into avatars, post lines as your favorite in other treads, talk about it in IRC channels, etc...
I think this is just teasing. I have not said anything: I have not said what event, or what prediction. I just said you will be surprised. Where's the spoiler in that? I am teasing, not spoiling you.
I agree with Bad-Beat, you´re spoiling us. You didn´t say what will happen but you already told us that we all were wrong. Thanks, I´d actually like to find that out myself without somebody else telling me that. The forums get more and more annoying lately.
If you would not have known that they were wrong before seeing the spoilers yourself, it's obviously a spoiler to tell them that they are wrong.
Largely you just have to understand that anything you learned from the spoilers is a spoiler, if you learned that someone's theory is incorrect and you tell them so, that's a spoiler.
Still, I think some people might be overreacting, it's not a BIG spoiler to know your theory is wrong, since there's still many other possibilities.
How about a new rule? You cannot even make a passing reference to the spoiler whatsover. You cannot mention it unless it is in the spoiler thread. Many of want to avoid the spoilers and do not want to be tempted by it in any manner. Of course, I'm just a stowaway, so I can't make these rules official.
i think it's implied in the current rules. too bad some people aren't smart enough to notice the implied message.
it seems to me that we eventually have to make everything VERY FUCKING EXPLICIT so that everyone, dumb or not, knows exactly, precisely, and without doubt about what is allowed and what is NOT.
the rest of this post will send a clear message to specific members. i will not need to mention names. you know who you are.
READ UP: if you have seen the spoiler, please SHUT THE FUCK UP.
THAT SHUT THE FUCK UP GOES FOR JUST ABOUT ANYTHING, even something as simple as "oh man just you wait until the chapter comes out!"
if you feel the need to tell people about what you see in the spoiler, please do so OUTSIDE this forum. that's right, NOT JUST OUTSIDE THE DISCUSSION THREAD, but OUTSIDE THIS DAMN FORUM.
don't make me go to the higher ups and force them to make some sort of script that disallows you from posting in discussion thread once you've clicked the spoiler thread. i mean it. if you think it is impossible to run such a script in this forum, think again. anything that is impossible can always be done impossibly; the only question is how, and you had better believe we know how.
now, so that everyone can read this message, digest it, and understand it so that NO ONE will repeat the same mistake ever again, i will CLOSE this thread for 24 hours. this thread will be reopened FRIDAY 2AM PST.
WARNING: IF YOU MAKE A NEW THREAD COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CLOSING OF THIS THREAD. I SWEAR, I WILL PERSONALLY HARM YOU WITH MY UMBRELLA. YOU KNOW I CAN.
those of you who participated in "spoiling" the chapter, shame on you.
those of you who are spoiled, you know who to direct your anger to.
nothing is more powerful than the public. we mods can bitch at you about a lot of things, but when you have the public going after you, you better realize that you've done something very extremely stupid. just remember not to repeat this, because the next time you folks do something like this, banning might look like a better punishment because you certainly do not want a bunch of angry spoiled fans to mob you on your front porch, in front of your very own family.
eDIT: first post on this page, how fitting. saves everyone the trouble of scrolling down.
phew.. we´re back… e1n´s wrath was heard. and now he´s putting his umbrella back to where it belong.
I thought he should reopen it at 2AM PST? It's 10:00PM over there!
i thought i'd let it pass early.
I'm going to whine but in exchange for that a juicy nuggest of wonderfulness, Arlong is coming.
And now, WHERE THE FUCK'S THE CHAPTER.
Yes, I realize this won't change matters one bit, but after standing on my feet for 8 hours making pizzas and coming home to no chapter, I'm sure you'll grant me at least that.
Yes yes, we all feel your pain. The pain isn't from standing.
Well the previous 2 chapters came Friday morining. (At least in my time-zone) I too was used to the releases on Thursday morning, but I'm getting used to it. Just like I was used to Chapter releases on Wednesday, and they were then on Thursday. So we move back a day. We are still getting it earlier here than in Japan.
In the mean time, sit down, take off your shoes and socks and knead the carpet with your feet; it works wonders.
Well Onigumo, normally I don't mind late chapter releases, but today I'm particularly stressed out so it'd be awesome if I could release some of the stress by reading the chapter to lighten up.
Well, here's to hoping there will be a chapter when I wake up tomorrow. Or at least by the time I come home from work.
