Xenogears would probably be my Legend of Dragoon. Just a tedious combat system.

Haha I actually mentioned that earlier. I really dislike its battle system. But I enjoyed its text. <:3
-
Great text!! The story had wonderful pacing. The battle system was hardly anything to write home about… although I did enjoy buying shit for my Gears.

Not a huge fan of the story of the game, either, but that's personal. On the other hand, I think we can all agree that the pacing on the last disc was not so good.
-
You all have good taste: Grandia was goddamn charming as fuck and hands down one of my favorite PSX RPGs.
The sense of adventure, the romance, the characters (and their development), battle system, and music all just really clicked for me, much in the way Lunar did.
I'm sure if I went back and played it, the voice acting would murder my ears, but I just have so much love for the game I don't think I'd even care. It's one of the first RPGs my younger sister eagerly watched me play from start to finish - the one that hooked her on playing video games with me, to the point where she would come into my room and be like "aren't you going to play Grandia / Brave Fencer Musashi / FFT / Tales of Eternia / Valkyrie Profile / etc.?" if I was doing something else.Loved Breath of Fire III (and IV too, though not a lot of people enjoyed it as much as I did).
Missed the boat on Xenogears, because I bought Parasite Eve (another love of mine) at that time instead. I ended up getting it years later, but it was really dated and hard for me to get into. Also: eff Unlimited SaGa. I am legitimately mad I purchased that game, and it is one of the few that I ever traded in.
-
I'm still awaiting the UK release of Xenogears. If Americans can complain enough to get Xenoblade then we UK folk should complain enough to get this one….
I wanna play it so much ;-;
But yeah. I dug it out. I think I'm gonna attempt Grandia once again

As far as the BOF series goes, I like then all for completely different reasons. But I hate them from different reasons too.
[hide]
BOF1: Never played it. lol. I tried, but the system didn't age well at all.BOF2: This was my first handheld game right after Golden Sun, and also one of the first RPGs I personally owned. What I loved about it was the unique mix of races that joined your party. Seriously. Look at these guys. There's like… only one human in the group, and he isn't even human himself. The world also had a nice lore to it, and I preferred the areas as they were here than in the forth game. Dungeon crawl with random encounters was pretty bad, especially the ones that were huge with recycled tilesets.. but I didn't have problems with this as a kid. I really enjoyed this game.
BOF3: This is my favorite game in the series, mianly because it was colorful, and a really fun cast, and while the music wasn't "classical", it was upbeat and made the adventure all the more exiting. It also has my favorite set of bosses and final boss(great music too). The story did have dark moments, but the graphical style just made the whole thing fun to look at.
BOF4: Had the best combat system and art, but somehow... I don't know. The game just felt boring for most of the adventure, and it wasn't due to a huge chunk of the game being in a desert either. It just felt like the characters and everyone living in the world were bored. I'll give it to Eshrin/Deis for being compelling on her own, the subtle bit of humor, and the moments where Fou Lou showed he had some humanity... but it felt so boring. Needless to say, I did have fun with it.
DQ: The graphics had aged really badly on this game. Heck, it didn't even look good back then. Which is a shame. The art-style was interesting, and a different take would have better presented the setting. It also had some really strange design choices that understandably turned off fans of the series(Save tokens, and the cost at using your Dragon Form). But I liked the game for what it was. It had a really good story, beautiful ending, and setting that had the potential to be so much more if it wasn't heavy dungeon crawling. The New Game + Elements were nice too. And the SOL Restore system is something I'd like to see in more RPGs(kill bosses> collect Party EXP and spoils> reload with all the party EXP and spoils > Dungeons get harder, but whatever ).

I actually sincerely will stand by Dragon Quarter forever
That game had by far the best gameplay
But it's just hard to call it a BoF game haha.
I just sort of consider it some other non-entity and appreciate it for what it is.

It really wasn't a BoF game. There's a reason it had a different subtitle and numbering. The setting and gameplay style were just SO radically different from anything else, it basically was a totally seperate franchise. I enjoyed it, but didn't appreciate the whole "designed to kill you and force replays" and "you only get 10 saves in the whooooole game" aspect.
-
I didn't comment on the game's fantastic soundtrack too. It was kinda refreshing for a game that mostly took place in a polluted underground mess.
-
Looks like it's shaping up nicely.
-
Sound interesting. Not hoping this will become a Monster Hunter clone.
And i hope the focus won't be on the multiplayer aspect.
The Magic Box has a trailer and some more info. -
It would seem this PSN update was more than meets the eye, I skimmed too quickly. PixelJunk Eden, Monsters, and 2nd Lap bundle is $2 (or $1 for each). PixelJunk Shooter is also $1. The newer PJ games are $5 each. I really had no interests in these games but I've heard nothing but praise so I bought the bundle and Shooter. At the very least it is a bunch of trophies for $3.
Also for those of you who still play Uncharted 2 multiplayer but never bought DLC or the GOTY edition (chances: super slim) all of the Uncharted 2 DLC is now free, supposedly forever. (forever of course ending the day they decide to close the UC2 servers)
-
Pixeljunk games=a lot of trophies.
Earnable trophies is a different question. Damn you, Eden.
-
Do trophies really matter that much?
I like them in that, depending on how the developers set them up, you know when you've seen and done basically everything the game has to offer and there's no more major secrets or events to do.
But when some of them are just hideous grinding related, require online play, or a pure fluke of luck where not dying is more pure chance than skill? When two trophies come from a branched path that takes 40 hours of a fresh play to get to? Where you played the game fair and square but due to not following a strategy guide, you missed a tiny thing at hour 37 that limits you to 99% completion? When something like One Piece Musou is just loaded with silver trophies that take only 20 minutes to get? When Sly Cooper throws you a bronze just for turning the game on?
Especially when some games can take 150 hours to platinum, and others can take 20. Doesn't the satisfaction wear thin quickly?
-
Isn't the main purpose for them just to see how gamers play anyway? I know at least one case where they're used in a way to see how many gamers get past the first hour or two.
-
Of course they matter, they have become an essential part of gaming. Only reason it is a problem is because older gamers perceive it as a foreign aspect and thus are generally hostile to it. The discussion regarding trophies and achievements is pointless, it is always a back and forth. They're just a more expanded version of in game rewards and stats which have been there since the beginning of modern gaming. I wanna facepalm everytime on one of these gaming sites I see some hardass flaming people for liking trophies, telling them to just play a game to play it and not for them. They're part of the game now dude, deal with it. (in general regards to those mentioned hardasses)
I understand the whole aspect of "You're only playing this to earn trophies? So if not for trophies you would never have touched this?" that annoy people, but I honestly don't see what the problem is, let people do what they want with their time and money. Don't wanna repeat myself but gamers grinding the hell out of a game to earn 100% completion has been around for decades, and upon doing such often resulted in bragging rights and screenshots of stats. In its core trophies/achievements are nothing new, they're merely making it easier for you to share.
-
I generally don't go for trophies/achievements. I don't mind people trying to get them but I myself don't feel the urge to do something special to get a little icon in my profile. I might try for some if I'm bored but in general I just ignore them.
-
I was the same way starting out, I was actually distraught that I couldn't turn trophy notifications off. But somewhere down the line I got really into them.
-
Plus side for me is that it really does make games last longer. for example without trophies I probably woulda finished Luffy, Robin, Nami, Hancock and Chopper's logs in Musou and left it at that. But trophies made me wanna play with everyone and do everything.
Same goes for a lot of games that I finished a playthrough quickly and thanks to trophies I went through again. (God Of War, Bioshock 2)
-
Agreed. I have played games way more than I would have otherwise, they add value.
-
I'd say it depends on the game, gaining a silver for killing 5000 with a specific weapon or something like that doesn't really do it for me.
To this date there have been only 2 games where I got all trophies one being Journey the other being Dark Souls.
I've considered trying to get the platinum for a lot of other games though but they kind of never really enhance the fun for me (example Uncharted 1-3, GoW 1-3, Darksiders etc.)Currently considering to do the Ni no Kuni platitum but we'll see…
-
There's a difference between "this game has more to do in it and I'm enjoying it, I guess I'll try for the trophies" and "Oh this game has a lot of trophies, I guess I'll play it."
The first thing I get. The second… not so much.
-

There are also differences in how programmers implement trophies. Pixeljunk, for example, tends to throw in several trophies that require tons of effort and exasperation to achieve, so trying to get them feels like work. Others–the Sly series is good at this--use them as a secondary set of rewards for fulfilling other objectives in the game.
I will admit I've gone after platinum trophies in games that I shouldn't have; I still get disgusted with myself when I think of how much time I spend killing giant turtles in FFXIII. But for the most part, trophies fulfill that same completionist urge that I had with games like Goldeneye, or Ratchet and Clank, or Sly 2 in the days before trophies. They're usually a sign that a.) I really enjoyed the game, and b.) I've probably reached the point where there's not much else to see in the gameworld. The latter point is not always the case, but it usually is.
-
I think it all depends on the design behind the game vs trophies. I would not say the name of the game, but there are just certian types that bug the hell out of me. The game had this arena with 50 different rounds, and you'd have to complete each round 3 times in order to get the next match. Simple enough. But optionally you can finish a round 10 times to get a star. The star itself serves absolutely no purpose- BUT WAIT!! You get a trophy for getting a star on all 50 matches. Like… what-the-hell? Who's idea was this? 50 matches you'd have to win 10 times each for one bloody trophy? That's awful design no matter how you put it.
-
Okay, these PixelJunk games are stupid. The hell.
Also a free to play Gundam game is coming to the Japanese PSN for those who care. Beyond fighting in Gundams you'll also fight as a person AGAINST Gundams. I think it's multiplayer, there's videos on youtube.
-
Okay, these PixelJunk games are stupid. The hell.
Nah, they're just all flawed and take a little getting into.
Racers: the worst o' the batch. Not fun in single-player, but if you can unlock enough modes, good times in multiplayer.
Monsters: probably as good of a tower defense game as I've seen. Main problem is I suck at tower defense games. It takes about five levels to get into the game, then you're addicted for five more, and then it gets frickin' impossible. More fun with a co-op player who knows what they're doing.
Eden: Would be my favorite of the batch if it didn't make some terrible decisions in gameplay. Having to exit and re-enter the gameworld after every objective was a terrible idea. More conceptual than fun, but the concept (weird visuals with equally trancelike music) is good.
Shooter: my favorite. Kind of slow for first few levels and short overall, but I appreciate the way that it manages to keep shooting new ideas at you for the whole game. Also fun in co-op.
Shooter 2 and Sidescroller felt like odd half-formed cash-ins on the Shooter engine.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Getting the platinum on Dark Souls is a hell of a thing. I spend entirely too much time video games and I was even frightened away on that one.

Well to be honest I feel like the difficulty of this trophy is pretty hyped. I thought it was very doable once you get the hang out of things, the first playthrough is pretty brutal learning all the places, bosses, combat tricks (learning parry was pretty tough). But the second playthrough isn't that much of a difficulty rise since you're thought to not get hit so the damage increase isn't a problem the fights just go on longer due the HP raise.
There are also very few grindy trophies(only 2 I think) and compared to other games they aren't really that grindy(channelers trident took me like 2 hours to get).
I also did this one before pyromancy was nerfed I think so I don't know how hard it would be today.Had a lot of fun with it though since a friend of mine made a bet to race to the platinum (we upped each other for month every 3 days or so for a new trophy),
the winner would get a pitcher of irish beer. My friend got stuck on a trophy were you had to gather items through pvp.
Boy was that pitcher delicious :D. -
I cannot stand Eden, I don't think I'm going to try playing that anymore. Racers is better but pretty fucking difficult. I too am terrible at tower defense games, so I doubt I'm gonna get much fun out of that. Shooter has always looked like a fun enough game so it may be the only winner of the batch for me.

Again, the way good trophy implementation should be.
-
Mmm wich game should I buy? The cheap final fantasy XIII or that uncharted double pack part.1&2?!
-
Uncharted 1 and 2. Slightly better (well. The 2nd one is decent enough) since XIII is pretty much meh
-
I think if you like Action-Adventures in general you should at least play Uncharted 2.
For the beauty of it it is worth playing.btw: if you don't have any game of the Uncharted trilogy you may want to wait since there will be a trilogy box hitting the shelves. You should look up if the games bought alone are not cheaper though.
-
I haven't played 2, but the first Uncharted had too much of the action in Action-Adventure. I was more interested in exploring and stuff.
-
So is uncharted 1 any good? Worth getting also?!
-
Uncharted 1 & 2 are fantastic, with 2 being one of the greatest games ever made. There's no better purchase you can make.
-

Thanks for telling me this. I was this close to buying the current set this week,
-
Last I checked the trilogy set is overseas only. I'm sure the US will get it eventually, but you could end up waiting for quite a bit, especially as Sony will no doubt be releasing a GOTY edition of Uncharted 3.
-
Speaking of Uncharted, Sony just announced the first two titles are finally coming to PSN on June 26th. I might be imagining things, but didn't at one point it was stated that UC2 could never come to the PSN because only Bluray could handle it or some shit like that?
Lol.

Probably all the stuff was uncompressed on the discs and they couldn't figure out how to compress it enough for download. Looks like they found a way though, the money was too much to bear missing out on :ninja: .

According to the German PlayStation Blog the U2 DLC will be for free with tonight's update so we can assume it's for whole Europe.
But get it before U1 and U2 hit PSN (June 27th) since then it will cost money again.

Just finished the main story for Disgaea 3 on Vita. There's quite a bit I don't like about the series, but I find it perplexing that a series done primarily for laughs tends to get more of the main tropes of characters and RPGs right than more serious attempts. Plus the localization is always brilliant.
Also, this is the kind of game that's built for Vita. More please.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-05-25-sony-patents-method-to-interrupt-your-gaming-with-an-ad
If that becomes reality I'm out Sony -
It just makes me wonder if they have departments called:
-Pissing everyone off
-Bad decisions
-Seeing what we can get away with"Hello, i'm Takamura Hiro, director of Pissing Everyone Off, and I feel with our new brand of in game advertisements, we'll be helping bring gamers closer to the ads and subsequent products. This way we can remind even the most focused gamer to check out the newest flavor of chip-snacks or even a new automobile, while he games. We've actually worked very hard on this in conjunction with the Department of Bad Decisions, and it's been a very challenging effort. Smiles and nods I'm very confident this new technology will piss many people off laughs."
-
Deus Ex Human Revolution had ads on the loading screens. But yeah, if the rumors about the next gen consoles is right, they're going to be pissing people off. First not being able to play used games and now interrupting your game for an ad? I mean the Xbox has adds all over its dashboard too and they pay for their online. It's crazy.
Edit: But as others have said, it's only a patent and most likely won't be implemented for much if anything.
-
But patenting … no having this idea is just a big bitch slap in gamer's face.
In a million years I wouldn't come to that idiotic idea. -
Hahahahahahahaahahaahaha.. no sony…. no
How would it work with online games? After the match? While loading?
Of course. They'll probably charge for online and then if you pay you don't get these ads
-
Deus Ex Human Revolution had ads on the loading screens.
And with how frequent you got a loading screen (that would last a good 15 seconds if not more) in DEHR it was pretty much what this patent is talking about doing. Seriously, what the fuck was with the loading in that game? They knew it was so bad they FUCKING ADVERTISED ON THEM.
