Curious how we're going to be overly critical of this chapter.
Ask and you shall receive.
So I was mulling over this chapter and at first, I kinda liked it. I mean Elfman won a fight for once and it was kinda cool and interesting. But…the more I thought it over, the more it just nagged my mind that...this fight was kinda shit.
I know, I know, this is just another one of Lion-chan’s inane, incoherent ramblings that I’ve been accused of making. But the thing is I was really trying to like this chapter. The concept of it was pretty good. But you, see, I have this thing that I should really do something about, it’s called logic and it just couldn’t let me get past several inconcistencies.Let’s get over the fact that this was a shallow fight with nothing really at stake with an antagonist we barely know or care about (or protagonist, really). That’s a given for this series whose main draw is the visceral pleasures of when cool-looking shit happens and nothing else. And I was looking at it from this perspective. But even so, there was stuff about the fight that just made no sense.
First of, WHY did Elfman wait till the very last second to unveil his Lizard form? There didn’t seem to be any severe drawbacks or time limits to it. So why, when he had a perfect form to go against a physical combat fighter and he was up against someone who fought prominently with his fists, did he not use it immediately? I mean, I could understand if he wanted to hold back a little and test the waters out with other forms, but he pulled it out after getting a severe ass-kicking to the point that he could barely stand up by the time he used it. There was just no reason for leaving it for so long.
Second of, why did Bacchus just keep punching Elfman after he revealed his form and kept unneccessarily damaging himself. Bacchus is supposed to be a top-tier fighter at Erza’s level. Are you really telling me that in all his battles, with all his experience, he never came across an armored opponent? So any mage with a reinforcement spell could give him a run for his money? He really didn’t have any other strategy other than punching and hoping his opponent breaks? I mean, i’d understand if this were the end of a long and arduous battle and Bacchus was feeling tired and reckless just wanted to stand his ground and let out a flurry of shots on Elfman before he passed out as shonen battles tend to go. But he was at peak condition while Elfman was on his last legs. There was no need to fall down to his level. Hell, a simple rope-a-dope strategy would have sufficed and Elfman would have fell down on his own.
Third of, even with all that, why the hell was Bacchus the one to fall down? Now I admit I'm adding my own specualtion here but I would assume comparing to a seasoned, peak condition fighter and a guy who’s about ready to fall down, well the latter would fall down first, will power be damned. All Bacchus did was tire himself out a bit and hurt his hands. Elfman on the other hand, who had already gotten a huge pummeling before and expended a lot of energy trying to hit Bacchus, was getting another huge pummeling on top of it. Really, would Bacchus, a top tier, highly experienced fighter, have so low a stamina that he gets tired out beating up a guy who was essentially just standing still and getting attacked? Does he faint every time he gets a little serious with a punching bag? This makes no sense!
You can say I’m nitpicking and I should just be happy that Elfman won something for once but I just can’t get over how poorly thought out this fight was. It cheapens Elfman’s victory for me than anything else. Mashima tried to make a good underdog beating a superior opponent fight but in my opinion, he failed miserably. I‘d rather Bacchus used a move to shatter Elfman’s lizard form after he got injured by it that one time. It might not be as exciting but at least it would keep to the story’s internal logic.
-
I know it has its flaws but I do like FT. And so far I really like this arc.
-
Loved the fight. Who would've guessed Elfman would be the first one to win some real points for FT huh? However I dislike that Arcadias's plot is rolling forward so quickly.
Lastly, I'm looking forward to the last matchups. My guess: Sabertooth girl ties with Mermaid Heel leader, and Mirajane beats the Blue Pegasus bunny dude. -

If you are trying to enjoy Fairy Tail from a logical standpoint, then you're doing it wrong.

-
Besides enjoyment, people read manga for what?
Don't know, but I'm not sure if TLS has enjoyed a single chapter of Fairy Tail for the last year.
-
TLC is a bit nitpicking, but he is basically right, this fight wasn't that well thought. Though it's still good to see Elfman win.
-
Don't know, but I'm not sure if TLS has enjoyed a single chapter of Fairy Tail for the last year.
Then why does he keep reading?
-
Not a clue. And I'm not meaning to call out TLS, it's a flawed series and critiquing flaws can be fun; I've dabbled in it quite a bit myself. But in a chapter that actually accomplished several of the things people have complained about for months–focusing on a side character, letting someone win without aid of Natsu/Erza, no friendship speeches--it's a little sad that even it can't get the credit it probably should.
-
Good chapter. I like how Elfman's magic got elaborated on - up to this point, aside from changing the appearance of his arm, it's been "turn into the demonic-looking beast mode, and then someone gets curb-stomped" (with that someone usually being Elfman), and I thought the fight went well - at least Elfman had some sort of defense against Bacchus' fighting style, rather than constantly getting back up and winning purely due to determination.
-
I can't hate a chapter like this. Elfman gets a win via getting beaten so bad that his enemy, a decently developed strong opponent, passes out? That's just too cool. If Elfman's fight are all like this, maybe it's not so bad he only wins every few arcs? This is definitely the high point of the arc for me.
-
Elfman
Chapters like these make me happy that I still follow this series. This arc has been surprisingly decent.

I don't go into a series with hate and vitriol seething through my veins. I have an open mind. If something is good, it's good and I derive enjoyment from it. On the flip-side, I'm not going to force myself to like something bad either. I have a thing called standards. I don't think they're too high either and I am prone to lowering them a bit at times contrary to popular belief.
I mostly agree that it did accomplish several things that were long time due and I appreciate the branching out from the same old formula. But at the same time, the fact remain that the execution…was not so good. Which is a damn shame because I was really trying to like it this time because of how it had Elfman win for once.
-
What is the cover about? I don't see how Zeref fits in.
-
The cover's for the movie that's being made. Despite my earlier joke about the girl looking like a sex-changed Zeref, she's a new character for it, I imagine. Almost certainly the McGuffin character that so many anime movies happen to have.
I was satisfied with this chapter, and it's nice that Elfman finally got a bone and legitimately beat a strong opponent before he's swapped out for Wendy. It's funny how those mooks were dumb enough to grab the wrong person, but still smart enough to push the blame onto a believable third party.
-
A new character, huh? It looks very Zeref for me. haha
So, about this movie, when is it going to be released ?
I never watched the anime, but I can give the movie a chance. -
Some time in August I think. So you probably won't be able to watch it until the end of the year.
-
Holy fuck I don't care what you say about Fairy Tail that was an awesome fight.
-
good elfman won it would have been quite ugly if fairy tail turn into some kind of hentai ;)
this rivalery between elfman and baccus sounds like they will become ally soon
we still haven't seen much of their magic boust have we?
-
I too think that the fight wasn't that good, but it was decently done, which isn't the usual for FT's battles. Elfman won by his own strength and magic, which is okay and I'm glad he won. Too bad we didn't get more of Bacchus, he's cool but that's it. I would've expected much more of him since he's on par with Erza.
The chapter was good, even if it focused Natsu at the start with color pages. It would've been better if the fight had color pages. -
Reasonable fight, Mashima is doing a good work until now.
-
Yawn chapter.
-
Hiroy-kun, why~ ;_;
-
Maybe it just means Elfman is legitimately stronger now? I enjoyed the chapter. It was a weird way to loose but I wonder if Baccus has less stamina for fighting after he's drunk. Drunken fights don't tend to last long lol.
-
@Schwerer:
Hiroy-kun, why~ ;_;
Nothing happened.
Aside from the "villains" still hinting they have ulterior motives for the second or third time(reveal the plan already)
And a fight between a "Blue Note archetype clone" (some guy that's supposed to be really strong) and Elfman(is this his first win? I forgot)I'm just still really bored of this arc.

If you have been following FT I don't see how you could be bored with this arc. It's been a very good FT arc so far.
-
I'm kinda liking this arc, its definetly not been more of the same or atleast I was pissed it was going to be more of the same but then they included Fairy Tail Team B and Elfman which made me like it more.
I like the drunk dude and Elfman and though the figth was decent and the chapter was fun enough.
-

That's the thing.
You can see.
I'm blind and I'm typing on a braille keyboard.
What's so wrong with that?
Being indifferent? -
"If it's for his friends, Natu's strengths increases 100-fold!!"
-
Damn that was elfmans first win since Sol of the element 4.
-
Buckle up boys and girls, looks like we are going into a "Lucy rescue arc."
-
Another moon theme plan?Fuck!
-
-
Under the mask, Tobi's revealed!
-
This post is deleted!
-
I read this chapter a second time skipping everything with Natsu, and it was even better! I freaking love this lizardman design.
A flaw though is…I really dont care about anything else this chapter. I don't even remember the name of this knight guy. Wasn't he a member of Raven Tail? He's pretty boring.
-
Nah, Raven Tail's knight and the evil(er) knight are two different people.
Huh, looks like the anime's finally going to have an honest-to-goodness filler arc with honest-to-goodness filler villains and honest-to-goodness filler plot instead of just the gag one-shots it usually does. Perfect time for one I guess, it'll make the three-months of ''training'' look a lot less dumb.
-

Yeah, and because he's boring there's a great chance of him begin the true villain in this arc. Amazing!
-
Not gonna lie, I really liked this chapter. Though this plot is headed into the cliche damsel in distress, the tournament is becoming a bit more interesting for me. Though I'm not a big Elfman fan, he had some good moments this time. Props to the nod to Rob Lucci and the lizardman design.
I hope the cover doesn't indicate that Gajeel and some other guild members won't be in the movie. I mean I like the main cast, but I want some side characters as well.
The anime needs a filler arc so badly right now. Honestly, I'm amazed they managed to do the last arc with hardly any filler other than some implied filler.
-
I don't care what you say, but for me this was an actually good and enjoyable chapter.
-
So is tit grabbing Kana's new quirk?
-
The real villain is tobi!!! BWHAHA
Tobi was already defeated by
OrochimaruKurohebi in the previous chapter, though. -

Oh, hah wow, I didn't even think of that.
-
Oh, hah wow, I didn't even think of that.
Which is a good thing. I just love Rob Lucci and thought of it immediately, but anyone trying to claim he is ripping off Oda is foolish this time around. I would call it a silent nod among two manga artists and nothing more, and I liked it for Elfman's design as well.
-
I'm glad Elfman actually won. Like, actually won. For real. By himself. Unfortunately Bacchus himself was a real letdown, I expected a lot more out of him I guess.
Still a better Fairy Tail arc than usual.
-
Bachus will do something later on in the story just u watch.
-
Pretty happy that Elfman won just by using his own strength, through legitimate means and everything. Not really sure how this Bacchus guy can be an important part of the arc now though, if he was beaten by Elfman then….what else can he do really? Apart from that, not much to comment on, apart from more "Mwahaha! Our plan is even nearer completion!" pointlesness.
-
Next matchups should be interesting Mermaid's heel and Fairy Tail B on deck
