Inconsistent sure, but at least we finally got the official spelling. Only took 60 volumes for them to finally give in.
Better late than ever though :)

Does this mean that Alexis got permission from the higer-ups in Viz to do the change? I know he's the editor, but I don't think he would be able change one of the letters in a lead character's name without first getting an okay from whoever is charge of Alpha.
And of course, there's going to be a few U.S. manga readers who will complain about it, but who cares? I'm sure the majority will be happy about the change,
Really Zolo being changed to Zoro? checks date …but April Fool's Day was five days ago!
Well, I have to say I am excited. Perhaps one of the very few times I could ever be this excited regarding one letter. xD In the end I had learned to deal with it, but it still bothered me a slight bit anyway.
Hopefully Teach will be next. Seeing as he doesn't appear that often, the switch shouldn't be that bad.
I'd rather they change Ogre to Auger/Augur, that seems far more glaring than a silly a/e issue in Teach which is pronounced pretty much the same way.
Ohoho! Good stuff if true, you guys know your stuff so I believe you, obviously. I've only bought the first 12 volumes of OP (money issues, you know how it is) so if, and that's a big if, they re-do the printed volumes with Zoro, I think I'll hold off buying them for a bit.

Nobody said anything about reprints. Only that the change will be in the next issue of alpha,And if they do it will be from 60 on up. Plus haven't they already done a reprint with this series before?
I highly doubt they will do a 3rd reprint.

Yeah I thought so. They have, it's when they made all the titles at the top of the volumes say 'East Blue', 'Alabasta', etc. I can't get SJ Alpha so it doesn't affect me in that regard. Guess all I can hope for now is that they change it to Zoro in the newly printed volumes. That would be from 63/64 onwards right?
If this is successful, then maybe there might be a small chance for even more name changes:
Teech - Teach
Ogre - Augur
Shiryu - Shiliew
Rogue Town - Logue Town
Neptunians - Sea Kings
Jimbei - Jinbe

Rouge Town - Louge Town

Wow! Have their really been that many glaring errors?
Funny as my head just automatically corrects it as I read.

Um just a little correction, it's Rogue/Logue Town.
Rouge is the makeup and big breasted bat.
Neptunians aren't mistranslations. They're localizations of the kanji characters (sea god + genus). The whole Ogre thing came about because those two words are spelt with the exact same katakana characters.

Excepting Rogue Town these aren't errors, just romanizations that weren't changed after Oda released proper ones.
But if they are going to change back to Zoro it makes sense for them to change the rest.
Judging by that tweeter feed they are expecting a massive jump in sales, and will otherwise assume people prefer the current translation, which I hardly think is fair.
On top of that I prefer Shiryuu over Shilew.
Zolo, being made into Zoro is good. Not going to bother me in the slightest since I ignore it anyways when I'm reading the english translations.
I am totally cool with Zolo, but Zoro finally getting in will shut up all morons who are too immature to look past that one letter.

To be clear, he seems to specifically mean subscriptions to SJAlpha from those holding back because of issues like Zolo.
That means if y'all know absolutely anyone who's been on the fence, push them to go for it NOW!
I opened up Alpha and the "Previously…" page still says 'Zolo'.
EDIT: We got pranked. Alexis worded it very particularly, where an instance where Usopp was using Zoro's worked out to where it fit the criteria of having Z, O, R, and O all in it together because Usopp was not speaking normally.
Totally uncool.
Well, Usopp did say "Zorwo" when shivering, but if that's all he meant by "Z O R O will appear together" (which wasn't even technically true with that "W" in between), it's a pretty easy way to tick me off after April Fools is already over.

Yeah I quickly realized that when it got to that point of reading and that's when I made the edit "We've been pranked" and right before you made that post I edited in what I meant.
That was such an incredibly cruel prank. T_T

You know I was thinking the same thing. Was that an misleading almost April fools joke? Usopp did say it, but just once. If that was a joke that was seriously not cool.
I talked to Stephen about it, it seemed like news to him, so maybe it was just a joke.
I am personally ok with Zolo, but to mess with fans like that who have such strong(even if irrational) opinions and expectations, this won't go over well.

Indeed, it fits into being a very cruel prank territory. Kind of like Adult Swim doing that Toonami prank, except AS is actually considering returning Toonami so I can deal with that. But this… We all took it as a confirmation, and while perhaps we're at fault for taking it that seriously, it's still cruel. The fandom is still unhappy for having to stick with Zolo. It makes us think of the 4Kids dub which we all want to forget, and it made us very excited that it was finally being fixed.
Earlier I said "Zolo" didn't bother me much anymore. It's a small price to pay for having legal quality translations of One Piece chapters so soon after they're release in Japan, but the fact that he made us think that 'Zolo' was no more was too cruel.
And here's his anwser:
Read chapter closer… I added an easter egg for the Zoro fans!
High-larious.
What a dick move, he even acted serious on twitter about it.
If i remember correctly in Davy Back or Thriller Bark; chopper called Zolo, zoro in one instance, cant remember where exactly; He also said Danji…
Fits the april fools joke thats been going around.

Pretty sure that was a mistake.
The "danji" thing was because he was crying,he also did one in sabaody if I remember right

Hahahahahhahaha :lmao
It's a freaking name why people get so pissed about it is even more hilarious.
Wow, that's some straight trolling, Alexis. XD
Knew it was too good to be true.
Oh, well. Moving on.
What'd I say =P
I find this pretty funny. Don't see how it's cruel.
I'm not too offended by it personally, but think of the people that bought SJA because they thought the name had switched.

Because a person running a business shouldn't act like this? It would alienate people?
Honestly, I think the "stop complaining about it" people are worse than the people that do complain about it.
I had a brief conversation with Alexis last night. Basically I saw this coming. We also talked about romanizations, and he said hopefully with SJA being more in-touch with Shueisha that they can get literal translations of Japanese names so they won't have a "Shiryu vs. Shilliew" type thing again. Which is good to know.
Get over it, it's a letter. An who would buy a prescription for a name change. I wonder if I changed my name if people would buy a prescription for me.
Buy it to support the series.
the name change never really bothered me to begin with, however i will say this
viz media's relationship with the anime/manga fandom has always been shaky at best, and some of their practices while questionable at best have alaways been given nothing more than a shrug, and everyone moved on. having said that, while their reationship with the fans is so mucky, is it really wise to be making jokes like this at the fans expense?? (you know the people buying your product??)
im really glad to see that they have a great sense of humor dont get me wrong, i just dont think everyone is going to find it in good taste as much as we do here. never the less, im still staying subscribed to them either way, they are givng us something that no other countries get, a legal way to stay up to date with some of our favorite manga series.

I'm not saying stop complaining. Go ahead and complain about Zolo, I don't care, I don't like Zolo either. I'm saying stop being such pussies over jokes.

I couldn't care less about Zolo/Zoro. Doesn't bother me one bit.
But as a company, seriously fooling others is a huuuuge turnoff. Why should we trust other things they say?
^ I don't feel like that, but, trust me, after this incident there are people that agree with that statement.
I'm not too offended by it personally, but think of the people that bought SJA because they thought the name had switched.
Well, in that case I have to laugh at those people. If something as petty as Zoro being Zolo stopped somebody from purchasing SJA then this prank served to set them in their place.
Obviously, I don't like Zoro being Zolo, but SJA is an great service anyway, and I want it to succeed because I want it to continue on and become better.
I can understand jokes and all that, but I don't see how this is helping their business any.
If they did change they might have actually increased their sales instead of ticking off people that were on the fence about it.
Like stated earlier I personally don't care which they go with, but this seems like a dumb thing to do.
Kirsch did it on his own. Viz did nothing. He was just having a bit of fun with readers. And it was blatantly obvious he was joking and he never actually said he would be called Zoro..
Honestly, it makes me like them more.
The only major thing thats wrong with SJA is that it is only available for Canada and USA. What bout the rest of the world? Aren't they allowed to contribute?
Speaking of Viz..they are having many issues with their App lately
Out of curiosity, what's the english name of Law's DF?
It is the Op op fruit.
It is the Op op fruit.
And from this and "Zolo" we can deduce that SJAs translations are a bit… different.

…. And what is weird about Op Op? It is the Operation Operation fruit. So I don't see anything wrong with it at all.
I would not question Stephen Paul's translations lest you incur his wrath of a thousand and one hell hounds.

Hahahaha.
Op op is perfect, whats a piece of crap is ope ope. Zolo is nothing, Waboshi you proibably prefer Shiryu over Shiliew don't you?

I get defending Op Op, but seriously?
