@RobbyBevard:
He's going to surprise everyone and say he loves Satsuki Yotsuba because of her cooking and complete lack of screen time (IE, she's normal). It could never be the chubby girl!
that's the worst idea I've heard today, and yet I could totally see it happening.
Also, wasn't there some other loli fire-mage or something? childhood friend, yadda yadda? does she still have a shot?

Now that WOULD be left field.

Anya. And she has as much chance as everyone else.
-
That settles it, I'm now officially rooting for Satsuki as main love interest.
If for no other reason than it provides this mental picture.
It turns out, Negi really likes Koalas.
-
I'm a Nodoka fan, and that I'll stay
-
Satsuki has a cute face. If she goes on a diet, she could be a man killer. Not left field enough for me.
I'm going for Misora. Negi can't into nuns. Not yet, anyway.

A nice Christmas present guys:D

Oh man, I love this arc. Negima hasn't been this "fun" in a while. I mean extreme fights for the fate of the world are awesome and all but they lack a certain innocence and levity that these sort of arcs have where they can just screw around and fight for their own personal feelings. The most interesting character developments happen during them:)
! Great chapter. Just fantastic. SO MANY AWESOME THINGS HAPPENING! Negi vs Class 3 A going full swing, characters showing off more of their abilities and getting into the spotlight. Yuuna, Haruna, Ako, effin ZAZIE AND CHIZURU!!! Extremely fun fights based on tons of clever strategy and making use of their opponent's psychology. Chizuru's artifact…the most awesome and hilarious artifact ever. That panel with Negi on the negi...HAHAHA XD, it's gonna take a while for that to stop being funny. Fun class infighting and betrayals, fun gags (I don't think there was a gag I didn't laugh at) and all wrapped up with a fun twist wrapping up a long needed wrapping up plot point (Akira better get that pactio danggit>< She should I mean, Akamatsu wouldn't tease it twice for it to not go anywhere but still...you always have that sense of doubt).
Anyway, fun awesome chapter. This is Negima at its best folks. Don't miss it!!!
-
It's really nice to see Zazie more active now and no longer a doll (to me she's the cutest out of the bunch along with yue)
not surprised that yue and honya did what they did.
and I am excited to see what Akira's ability is going to be…I forgot that she didn't even make a pactio yet

Probably something water related. How it will help them out of their current situation remains to be seen.
Also I wanna say I lovce Chizuru's artifact. It fits her so well! Totally in tune with her character of being a motherly figure who wants to take care of you…but who you should obey unflinchingly or face the consequences usually in the form of a negi up your ass. It's perfect!
Edit: I predict it'll be something transportation related like an artifact that allows you to travel to different locations via dimensions connected by pools of water or something like that.
-
I have to say, the start of this series definately threw me off. After a friend kept assuring me that it was a good series, I kept reading more into it and now I will say that I defiantely enjoy it.
-
@Thousand:
The most interesting things are what happens after the major twist in a story not the twist itself. Akamatsu clearly knows this.

Chapter's out.
http://www.mangareader.net/mahou-sensei-negima/349
Scans are not as clean as usual but the translation is pretty fine.
! HA! I called Akira's artifact ability!!!
! SO MANY fun callbacks and side-characters coming back into the spotlight. Satsuki made the chapter though. She gave Evangeline such a chew out!!!
! Other than that this chapter was pretty great. I love Akira's artifact and her cool looking costume, I love the constantly creative ways Akamatsu uses characters and their abilities and how they interact with each other both in terms of character interactions and how the magic squares off against each other, I love the emotional drama (which I think was given a satisfying finish for now) and the absurdity of how it is all tied to adolescent girl crushes but yet I find myself caring and empathizing anyway, I loved Evangeline and her hilarious immature antics (and chew-out) and I lov…well the ending was a bit of a cop-out but I guess the important thing is that we know there IS someone which will revealed at a more opportune moment. All around, a lot of things to love with this chapter though. Now on to next arc (which might possibly be the invasion by evil time-travellers arc). -
Ending was shit…how does that change anything? Other than that, decent chap. Does negi seem a lot more mature to everyone?
-
It's totally going to be Yotsuba. Just cause.
This is now the shipping I endorse.
-
! Well, that was to be expected, they did change the course of things by defeating The Lifemaker…
! Too bad that means Chao doesn't exist anymore... -
Will Akamatsu make the last volume of Negima in omnibus format? I want an Akira ending.
-
Nice chapter, but i got confused.
Now Chao doesn't exsist anymore how was she able to travel into the past now.
Grandfather paradox is calling. -
@All:

It's a weekly series. it isn't initially released in large volumes. Thats for marketing to decide later. And no, probably not, it will continue to be 200 page trades most likely.
Nice chapter, but i got confused.

Grandfather paradox is calling.Alternate timeline. They're on Back to the Future rules.

-
I don't know about you guys but while I was reading this chapter I was like "Uhhhhh is this series ending or what?" I know it won't right but damm did this chapter have that feelling.
-
Is this series almost over?
-
Surprised to see a 5 month time skip, I thought for sure we'd get a few more months of silly fun filler stories before getting to… this.
But yeah, we knew it was entering its final arc for a while. (Especially with the previous movie being the "final" movie) For a while we thought the previous arc was going to be the last one until it set up one more. The question is, how long will this final arc, and the final battle within, actually be? It'd be preeetty hard to top the climax of the last one in terms of scale, and Negi can't really get much stronger.
Series could be over in as little as 8 more chapters, (which is where volume 38 would end) or another 200. There's really no way to tell. Just breaking up the status quo in and of itself doesn't really mean much when its Akamatsu.
Akamatsu skipping a chance to do months of goofy side stories before getting to this chapter makes me think its going to be sooner rather than later though. But 40-ish volumes is a good run. Nearly 10 years, as long as Ranma or Dragonball, and faaar longer than any of Akamatsu's previous works.
Kinda crazy, I've been following this series since the start, pretty much.
-
Finished reading the chapter…
Permission to cry like a bitch?
Anyway, I agree with Robby that it is kinda sad we didn't see what happened in those five months, but hey, Akamatsu hasn't really steered us wrong yet. Did that certificate say that Negi is acting Principal, or was that a mistranslation?
-
Holy fudge!
I did NOT expect this at all.
-
You know, given how Asuna was talking, about how she wished there was more time, wanting to have more adventures and fond memories with her friends… might be exactly why there was a 5 month skip. To make the readers have that sudden jarring feeling of "we're out of time" and to feel that way too. Its extra jarring because basically, we came back from the long summer vacation, saw a few chapters with Fate as substitute teacher and Negi not really being there... and then the year was over in a flash.
Of course we want more adventures and wackiness... so does Asuna.
Sort of how Oda had a 2 year timeskip in OP after we'd been without the Strawhats for 2 years. So the time apart for them was the same as the time apart for us.
-
I honestly doubt it's ending any time soon. There's still quite a few plot points to resolve and we've been getting hints here and there that this series still has one big mega arc in it. Firstly, I think it was quite clear Akamatsu was holding back from going full blown out crazy in the final confrontation last arc (we didn't really see Setsuna or Mana's fights and they got these power ups that we didn't see clearly either for one thing), there are just too many plot threads and subplots and just too many new things showing up to just wrap things up now i.e. where does Zazie come from, who was the robed figure, what are the pactios, are we ever gonna see Chao Rin again, Negi surpassing his father (Akamatsu made it quite clear that though Negi is uber elite strong right now, he still has a little bit more to go before he can duke it out with the likes of Nagi, Rakan and Evangeline), what role Fate is gonna play etc. etc. and just these random things like Akira and Ayaka getting their pactios which would be just weird to do at this point if the series was gonna end 8 chapters later and not 200.
Plus I wanna see that roster complete dammit, sure they all know at this point but I'd like it if the twins and the cheer leaders got some more substantial character development, maybe a pactio or two before I call it complete.
But really the most important reason I don't see this series ending with Asuna going to sleep for a 100 years is because FUCK BITTERSWEET ENDINGS!!! Get an evil time lord, get their asses in the future so they have an excuse to get Asuna back dammit!!!><
Ahem…what I mean is I just don't see Akamatsu ending things so...sad. The entire manga has always been happy happy (and personally I really don't mind that, it's nice to have such a light hearted manga) and it'd be just very weird to end things on such a note. Not to say Akamatsu doesn't have the gumption to do it, he's the calibre of writer that can do anything, it's just the characters deserve a big old happy ending and the manga always seemed to be pushing towards that. Eh, we'll see. Pretty exciting where he'll take things now though, will it end? Will they be thrown into the future by evil enemies, will they timeskip ten or twenty years and have their big mega final arc as adults?
BTW Robby, just curious. Is there a mandate that all manga need to end on the last chapter of a volume and authors need to pace things out to ensure that or what?
-
Yeah, I don't think its ending in 8 chapters either. Another couple years are probably in store. But its definitely approaching the finale.
@Thousand:
BTW Robby, just curious. Is there a mandate that all manga need to end on the last chapter of a volume and authors need to pace things out to ensure that or what?
They schedule these things in cycles. New series begin and end every 10 weeks, for all the weekly magazines. And thats because thats the chapter count to make a volume. (Monthlies have more pages, so less chapters per.)
If they don't, their final chapters have to be included in the previous volume, which inflates the page count and the cost of printing the volume. While they could potentially go one or two chapters over the usual amount, or an extra big final chapter (Love Hina and FMA did this… but their final volumes had less chapters overall) ... they aren't going to stop at 6 odd chapters and force that extra print cost and cover price on the previous volume when it'd be easier to just do 4 more chapters. And generally they'd want as much time as possible to tell their proper ending.
So, its not an absolute mandate, but it IS common sense and courtesy for a variety of reasons for the last volume to be the same length and price as the others in a long running series. Especially since, barring a failed ratings cancellation, they should know well in advance that they're wrapping up.
-
Well, there were exceptions. I remember Rurouni Kenshin ended in half the volume content, the rest was some other story from Watsuki. (or was that just my country's release and none of the other had that?)
-

I don't know if that's what Akamatsu intended, but that's bloody brilliant insight and perfectly summarizes what I'm feeling here.
It definitely reminds me of my final year in high school, after college apps had been sent in and people were getting accepted to schools. Those final few months were just fluff, an almost meaningless bide between the next big life event. Hardly a worthy transition, but a period often taken for granted and looked back on as "why didn't I make those last few months more special".
-
Maybe…an arc that takes place in 100 years?
The ultimate timeskip....
-
That's some Gunbuster right there. Gunbuster focused on time dilation and how people who spend significant time away from Earth return home and the world has changed. Noriko stayed 17 while her friend who was the same age eventually went into middle age, became a mother, then old age…and died.
Fudge, why is it raining in my house! I can't see through all of this freaking water. sniff
-
Nice chapters deserve nice scanlates.
Sudden 5 month skip gives me such a bittersweet feeling. Good job, Akamatsu.
-
I still can't get over how fantastic the writing was. Akamatsu can do emotion like no other. It never came off as cheesy or melodramatic (unlike a certain other manga with mages that tries to do emotional scenes) but felt perfectly natural and it was perfectly paced and that ending with that picture was just perfect.

! Oh god, this chapter. This chapter, this chapter…
! I don't think I've ever cried reading a manga before. The tears are falling out my eyes as I type.
! Asuna.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
! Also guys, make sure to really read hard the double spread with the roster. It may not look it but it's a mountain of information on many plot points and of the direction this series might take (and strongly hints that we're getting our final mega arc though Asuna's claim that they'll meet again hints quite a bit at an epic reunion after an epic mega arc already).
-
! I spent 5 minutes reading the class roster remembering things and laughing at them.
-
! Fuck, fuck im so sad with this, what a beatiful chapter.
! Those pages that were leading to the kiss were great stuff, it was so well done.
! I don't really know what will happen now, will we get some chapters dealing with the stuff that was written in the class roster? That is my best guess. -
Fantastic chapter. If there weren't so many lingering threads yet these last couple chapters could easily be the series finale and I'd be satisfied. But, there's still more to come.
! I was tearing up a bit, but the chapter was over too quick to get me. If I'd read it back to back with the previous one… maybe. Really I'm surprised there wasn't a big mass party like there was for Chao.
! That long pull out shot where the camera just stayed on them for several pages while stuff went by in the background was fantastic. Easy on the assistants as well, I imagine.
! So, about that spread.
! Neat seeing the old roster, drawn TEN YEARS AGO, again.
! Its interesting looking at the full character names, and realizing that some of them are referred to by first name, and a lot of them by last name. I know thats a subtle thing that pops up in japanese culture that signifies closeness, along with suffixes being used (or lack therof) and its an interesting touch.
! Confirmation that Chao is running on back to the future rules and is now from a parallel timeline?
! Natsumi has "Kotarou-kun's girlfriend" crossed out? Just Negi presuming too much in advance? Or...? ANd then Madoka has "With Kotarou kun?" Hrm.
! Was there an earlier story involving Valentines that I'm forgetting, or is it significant that four girls specifically have "About valentines" notes from them. Chisame, Nodoka, Akira, and Makie? -
! Let's hope so…I'd hate to think Chao doesn't exist anymore...
! Can't say anything about this chapter that no one else already did, but it was fantastic. -
! I'm assuming that all those little tidbits about Valentine's and Christmas refer to fun, wacky side adventures we didn't see in those five months. Maybe we'll get a flashback to them at some point? Really the whole thing is a mountain of information. When the roster first came out in chapter one, Akamatsu used it to great effect in setting and building up characters. Now he's using it again to foreshadow the major events that will happen in the future. Pretty neat callback though I kinda wish he redrew it to fit his current art style-- It's really jarring seeing his old art style compared to his current style.
! Here are the really important tidbits that I managed to see hinting at what's to come. Don't read if you want the fun of discovering them yourself.
! Sayo: Incident During War (Investigations Continue). Hmm what War? World War II? Are we going to get a Sayo flashback?
Yuuna: About her mother. Hmm So he hasn't asked her yet? Yuuna's mother is one of those plot threads that Akamatsu has long left lying around.
Ako: **About her back. Megalo.**So we are gonna get a flashback about what happened to her back? But who the hell is Megalo? Did Megalo the shark bite her back or something?
Akira: Very strong. About Valentine's. Hmm, hinting that Akira is going to get a surprisingly prominent role from now on? Also Valentine's day?
Misora: Cocone san's partner. What? She's the one Misora kissed to get her pactio? O_O Yeah…we really need Misora's backstory too.
Madoka: With Kotaro-kun? -- Another love triangle Akamatsu? I really wish Akamatsu would focus a bit on Madoka though. She's the least developed character in the class.
Haruna: Wanted in the Magic World. Is that so?
Makie: Should meet her little brother. About Valentine's. Makie has a little brother? Have we seen him before? It'd be weird for him to be brought up randomly unless it's important. And why does Negi want to meet him so bad? And again, Valentine's day?
Sakurako: Maximum Luck. Scary. Incident on Christmas. Done. So even Negi acknowledges Sakurako's extremely bizarre luck that can easily get through tons of magical defenses. To the point's he's scared of her. Hmm. We REALLY need an explanation for that. Also what happened on Christmas and why is it done?
Mana: Half-Demon. Request as Bodyguard. So Negi knows about Mana's heritage. Also request as bodyguard? For who? I doubt he really needs her for himself.
Chao: Parallel World? Let us meet again!! Ooh, very interesting one. I don't think she's necessarily running on Back to the Future rules as it's a question mark at this point but it's hinting that it is and also hinting we'll see her again which in turn hints that time travel is going to be a plot point again but that was something we figured out long ago.
Kaede: Want to learn ninjutsu! About her family home. Done! Huh? Negi wants to learn ninjutsu? Or is it the twins who did that? I remember they screwed around with his roster one time. And apparently he went and researched Kaede's home town? That'll be something to see.
Chizuru: The manipulative type!! Do not anger. Nothing really important here. Just find it funny that even Negi is scared of Chizuru XD
Fuuka and Fumika: Very Practical (crossed out). Adult tastes. An Exceptional Technique?! They are both very childish (crossed out) About the twin boys. The hell is up with this? I guess they did screw around with Negi's roster. Who are the twin boys though?
Hakase: Scout her. Done! Contact Godel. Very interesting. So muc for Negi not wanting to get his students involved.
Chisame: Adviser. Contact Godel. About Valentine's day. Heh, someone else who looks to be having a very significant role. And what the hell happened on Valentine's day?
Nodoka: Very cute. About Valentine's day. Hmm. Very cute huh? Again, Valentine's day?!?
Natsumi: Kotarou kun's girlfriend (crossed out)**.**Now that's interesting especially the fact that it's crossed out.
Ayaka: About Uncle. Done! Amazing Pactio. Contact network. Who's Uncle? And what network? There's a pactio network?!
Zazie: Princess of the Demon Realm. Is the Demon Realm Venus? Yeah, we really need Zazie's backstory the most.
! Also tidbits worth mentioning is how everyone's going to India which has a lot of conferences. Maybe one about the existence of a magic world will occur there? Also the talk between Negi and Asuna hinted very strongly that the final fight between Negi and Nagi is going to happen after Asuna wakes up. Pretty interesting that Negi already has a method of saving him. -
Yeah, those notes being from the five month gap make sense. If they're at the end of the school year they would have jumped from roughly November to April, or December to May, and those holidays all fall in then.
Fuuka and Fumika entries were largely written waaaaaaay back, but damned if I remember when. Though " About the twin boys" I have no idea.
As for valentine's day, the fact that Negi had to make notes…. Maybe those four girls all gave him gifts in February and he wrote the notes to remind himself to return the favor on White day a month later?
Would have been before this massive confession binge the entire class went on too... but while I think we'll get follow up explanations on some of it... I can't imagine getting full blown flashbacks, because that would defeat most of the point of Asuna leaving as "suddenly" as she did.
