As you all probably know, I never post in this section. I never follow this section at all, for that matter. This puts me right in line with the rest of the staff, who also don't have the time or reason to even look in this section. So I'll provide an admin opinion here and now to help erase confusion and uncertainty. Please understand that I'm typing this up without much staff discussion on it yet, so it's not all set in stone.
You guys are pretty much your own little community in here, and none of us in the staff are going to pretend to have more than the little knowledge of it that we have, of which Robo might have the most from IRC. Modship on this forum isn't a popularity contest at any level, and it never will be. To be honest, majority opinion is frequently wrong in this matter in general (not specific to this section or even to apforums as a whole), and therefore we ultimately place the responsibility of such promotions on ourselves. So we aren't intimate with this subcommunity and we're not going to leave the decision to some kind of majority vote. Let's get all of that out of the way now, because it's not likely going to change.
What we will do is read this thread in its entirety and ask Foolio and Sensui for their personal opinions in private before reaching a decision. In the end, though, we're not going to promote anyone who doesn't want to do it.
The question has come up about multiple mods. This is not an impossible request, since I just named two as it is. I can't say for sure whether we'd do it or not without discussing the specific issue with the rest of the staff, but I can acknowledge it as a legitimate possibility. If we deem that it's in the best interest of this section and the forums to promote 2, 3, or whatever mods, then that's what we'll do. I've seen a couple people decline the position ahead of time because they didn't want to get hung out to dry on their own, which is more than understandable.
I'd like to see more definitive responses from people who are being discussed under the assumption that having multiple mods is a legitimate possibility. Something along the lines of "I'd be willing to do it only if there are at least x other people doing it with me" would be fine. Including words like "maybe" just won't cut it because it's not an answer. Someone mentioned the pressure of being approached by the staff, and though I don't know how much that affects each person, we might as well just eliminate the factor if we can. That's simple if we have the answer ahead of time for each scenario. That's not to say that we won't still approach someone to ask if we feel that's the best course of action, but it might be easier for everyone if we don't have to.
However, do NOT be so naive as to believe that if we promote 3 that all 3 will remain forever. People will quit, or get dismissed in the worst case. Such is life, and we would lean heavily on the current and previous mods to figure out how to fill in the gaps, and it will not be instantaneous.
I hope that helps to clear things up. Foolio, Sensui, and everyone else have done a good job of not making this section more trouble than it's worth for us to this point. We'll always be nervous where real money is involved, and I know a few issues have popped up here and there, but it's worth noting that this section hasn't caused us all that many headaches since its creation. Foolio and Sensui especially have my appreciation for that.
