I cannot even fathom how an extremely minuscule mistranslation about something that has absolutely no bearing to the story's big picture has created so much controversy that one of the best translators here has gone…

Whoa. If Aohige is actually gone, I'm gutted that this forum has lost a great translator. However, it seems that he've been disillusioned with this forum for a while (Does anyone else remember the popularity poll between him and Zephos?), so perhaps he wanted to quit for some time…

I can´t really get that discussion (or its relevance :D - aside from some people doubting Aohige at least…), but as far as translators go, they come and they go. You can´t survive on the net if you begin doubting yourself just because dumb people (or others who want to make a point) may doubt you. And I do understand that it must be very annoying...
I myself am very thankful for Aohige´s translations, and I hope he doesn´t really give up on us - if he does, well then, we´ll somehow manage to find the mistakes in MS´ translations :D

Brenne i don't really understand what you don't get in the specific part of the manga that Aohige has not explained you yet(nor i care to understand),but it is clear that you have the problem.
Aohige clearly said that every single Japanese person did't have a single problem with the manga,be it a grammar problem,a contextual problem or whatever…
The fact that Aohige clearly said to you that in Japanese the context of the phrase that Luffy says is clear as blue and not a single person has had a problem says it all.
So all the Japanese people don't find a single problem in this particular part yet you do...
So i am wondering which side is wrong...Eh.... -

So i am wondering which side is wrong...Eh....I don't think it is about this one panel anymore, but how certain people react to simple questions. No matter how "valuable" or "respected" you are within a community, you should not run around insulting people and acting like gods gift to the world.
Seriously, I would prefer to have no translation at all if the alternative means kissing the butt of an arrogant user (not saying you do).

Thats unfair to Aohige. You can't say he's being arrogant,I haven't been on these forums for too long but from what Ive seen the dude does a tough job that not many are capable of doing & he puts up with alot of shit ,like with this whole translation ordeal it must be hard trying to explain something to another user that you yourself know full well to be the truth while a bunch of random people who don't know shit make accounts just to tell YOU that you're the one being irrational, this is why I think he blew up & ultimately left, not because of the convo with Brennen,It was the ripples in the lake that followed.
To put it simply ,the misunderstanding between Brennen & Aohige was more or less a sibling disagreement ,most of us have siblings we know how it goes. But I know if me and my brother were arguing ,then our gardener or Pool man walks in just to tell you you're wrong is a huge pint of bullshit and tbh I'm not surprised he bailed.
BTW Ive never once seen him ask anyone to kiss his ass. They do a pretty good job of it on their own. But you know what man some fucking appreciation would be nice.

You might also say it's not very constructive to keep arguing your point when you can clearly see the other guy is getting angrier and angrier - it's not a debate competition we're having here, is it? Read the air and stop poking those who are losing their patience.
Also, now that others have explained their views, please try to see it from Aohige's point of view: if he has spent whole thread explaining why that scene is crystal clear to anyone who knows enough Japanese, then it's understandable that he would be tired to begin with. Then it's suggested that Oda himself made a mistake because the Western audience had trouble understanding the scene (mostly based on a mistranslation). And if you can say that Oda made a mistake, then aren't you also saying that the entire Japanese readership must be mistaken for going with it? (Aohige himself said this many times, you may have noticed he wasn't happy about it.) Dunno about the rest of you guys, but as hard a time as I'm having following the whole argument by now, that right there sticks out for me as potentially explosive. And here we are.

L__et's be clear, if Aohige truly leaves as he told me he is, then it is 100% because of me. This isn't about people arguing his translations or his knowledge of Japanese, because from what I have seen here nobody has questioned him in that regard, myself included. This is about me disagreeing with him on a matter of situational context, something that has nothing to do with Japanese or English or either of our understanding of the two, and because I disagreed with him and "refuse" to "listen" to his argument, he is fed up. I'm on staff here, I'm an admin, and as I represent the staff he no longer wants to be here where someone like me, who won't "listen", is in charge. If you want to yell and point fingers and be angry and complain or whatever else then take it to PM, with me or someone else, but keep it out of the discussion threads. I think everyone has had enough of the subject… let it rest.
