Well I'm about to read Red Wedding in SoS…but I kinda dont want to. Grr stupid spoilers telling me what was going to happen! Now I don't want to read :( Is the rest of the book happier?

I guess it's just that I don't have anything to look forward to in this book. I remembered most of the big moments of the first three books and was eager to get to them again. Not so with Feast, unfortunately.
And I think it's more of a Arya Deprivation Syndrome in my case.
But thanks, I will power through. Dance has been ordered, after all
yea i like reading about arya and sam most, but they are like only 3 chapters or something so far out of the 400 pages i have read.
jamie is decent, brianne is boring and cersi is fun to see her starting to fall apart since i hate her.
but i am HATING these random chapters poping up in this book that are about new people. its pissing me off.

I think that the ending (regarding two specific characters) is quite happy, and the final hook (regarding one specific character) is kind of foreboding/awesome. Trust me, there's a reason that a good 70% of the fanbase thinks ASOS is the best in the series.

(Thanks for avoiding spoilers :) ) Really? Most readers like SoS best? Huh. runs to book …. glues book to face Thanks for the motivation ^^
-
Still haven't read all of it, but one thing kind of alarmed me.
! "If one central character who appears to be almost certainly dead at the end of Dance actually is, I'll be both devastated, and very impressed."
WTF, that left me fearing for the worst to happen. . .Like, the WORST.
! Like Jon Snow dying. Or. . .no. . .Tyrion. . .
Edit: Well, he mostly says that he'll try to deal with ALL the plot points he has opened before, that it is quite the task, but he'll try and reach a satisfying conclusion for them.
And that some "mistakes" attributed to him, like characters having different explanations about the same event are in fact deliberate on Martin's part.
But horses changing sexes are real mistakes on his behalf. -
Finished rereading AFFC this evening.
5 years. I am ready for tomorrow.
Yes.
-
I am so pumped. I even took a day off tomorrow (I had a lot of leave lined up and I'm not vacationing this summer so I'm good). There will be nothing but A Dance with Dragons. Plus maybe some food, showering, and laundry.
-

SoS starts out alright, but it picks up over time. CoK was great all the way through, imo. I couldn't put it down.
-
bullshit
reading feast of crows right now, like 700 pages in or so, and just got done with an arya chapter and was like "WTF" quickly flipped through the rest of the book and there are seriously no more chapters of her after that. bullshit
-
Brienne's been cast to a pretty much unknown actress, Gwendoline Christie
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm147504896/nm3729225
I have to say, it's a really nice fit.
Also, damn you to hell, Victarion >_>
-
I'm about 400 pages into AFFC and I have just one thing to say
I DONT CARE ABOUT THE IRONBORN AT ALL
Fuck, they're chapters are bore me to tears, especially the way Martin writes Aeron's POV chapters. It quickly grating down my patience. I never though I would be so excited to read a Cersei or Sansa chapter.
EDIT: The only thing cool about the ironborn is Asha. She's total my type. Short hair, wispy, sarcastic and full of wit. A sharp and quick tongue. Love that girl.

Glad I'm not alone.
I swear to god, I'm going to tear this chapter out of my book.
-
I think the Greyjoy chapters (and Brienne's as well) are a good example of Martin expanding too far and not really planning appropriately.
! The Greyjoys are obviously going to play a part further on in the story (trying to take Daenerys for a wife so at least they're going to try to intersect with the non-Westeros storyline) and so I feel like Martin wanted to establish that conflict from within (hence all the various new viewpoints) but didn't really have that much to actually write about them at this point in his story. Same with Brienne's chapters, only in her case it's even more frustrating because you actually KNOW where Sansa is and instead of being tragically ironic you're just like NO I don't CARE about this pointless circular journey, just DO SOMETHING!
! The fourth book (AFFC/ADWD) is not really supposed to be building action from ASOS–the really crazy shit went down and now as the title suggests, the crows are coming out to pick up the scraps--so I can sort of understand that it's not supposed to be all war and beheadings and betrayals and that juicy stuff, but there's just too much of nothing in AFFC. Maybe cutting some of the story threads shorter wouldn't be enough to squash all the viewpoints into a single book, but he certainly could have saved himself a lot of time writing the two. From what I've heard in advance reviews, ADWD isn't supposed to be significantly more crazy/shocking than AFFC but at the very least it's got a better batch of characters to follow. -
I still think the Ironborn and Dorne chapters could have been condensed to a single viewpoint. =\ Either Asha or Victarion (I like Asha more, but Victarion is relevant to every chapter), while Arianne could have handled everything in Dorne.
-
The only thing cool about the ironborn is Asha. She's total my type. Short hair, wispy, sarcastic and full of wit. A sharp and quick tongue. Love that girl.
I lately started to think of Asha and Theon as Azula and Zuko for some reason. Can't shake that image anymore…
I do like the Ironborn on a whole, still reading the kingsmoot. ~400 pages to go.
Kingsmoot question:
! When Victarion is contending for the throne he makes the captains gifts of silver, gold and gems. Asha then approaches him and picks up a golden collar on the way. Now why would Victarion offer them jewelry? Doesn't that contradict the credo of "paying the iron price"? Unless it's only for selling, I guess.
-
My memory is kinda rusty, but wasn't the Dorne chapters kinda for nothing?
! Like, all the planning Arianne did, the conspiration, the travel. . .only for her plans to be frustrated anyway? Did it make any impact? I don't remember if, in the end, it served any purpose other than stalling?
-
i'm also hating these ironborn as well. the only thing close to it are the brianne chapters. man is she fricken boring. Nothing happens. She is basically walking around looking for said person and you always KNOW she is going the wrong way or chasing the wrong person, ect.
i like reading cersi since its nice to hear her thinking she is a genius but knowing she is fucking stupid
i like reading jamie cause its nice to see him starting to realize cersi sucks ass and anything dealing with cersi's downfall is A+ in my book, plus he is starting to get honor is seems.
i like reading about all the starks besides sansa, she has a chance to redeem herself if she screws over her basically jailor, but till then she is being the same old dumb fool
sam is always fun to read aboutand boy do i miss many ohter characters NOT in this book. I hope dance with dragons doesn't have like 1/3 of the book stupid character like the ironborn or stuff like that
-

! Arianne's planning was basically for nothing, only resulting in Myrcella getting injured, Oakenshield dying, and that Dayne guy escaping. Plus most of the sand snakes getting imprisoned. At the very, very end, when Arianne's father frees her, we get some good info because he tells Arianne what Dorne's role is in this whole business and what Quentyn is doing in the east.

Hmmm just finished Red wedding. If I hadn't been spoiled by so many people it probably would have shocked me more. (Which is why now ADWD is out, this is the only thread on the web I'll be reading). I'm more psyched for the rest of the book now thankfully so I'm hoping to catch up to you guys really soon and get a full taste of the wait for when book six comes out. (Good thing I'm patient)
Overall Martin wrote it really well, the entire chapter was just screaming that something was amiss and I like to think I'd have been wary even if I hadn't been spoiled…..Who knows. -
Just picked up my copy (!!!) and I plan to spend the entire evening reading it. I read quickly, so I'm expecting to complete at least half of the book tonight. Oh man. YES.
Opened the front cover. Not really a spoiler, but just in case:
[hide]We finally get maps of the Free Cities, Valyria and Beyond the Wall. Cool.[/hide]
Now, I only need to pile a few snacks next to my reading chair and grab a bottle of water….and forget the world exists for a few hours. ^^ -
Six more days, Kitsune…
You can take it...
-
Oh my fucking God this book is awesome. About 200 pages in. I love Jon Snow more and more with every chapter. Literary mancrush.
-
I missed tyrion.
-
Lalalala, I can't hear you. Just wanted to leave this here (no spoilers at all):
-
I am going to enjoy this.
-
Halfway through ADWD & taking a quick break. I'm in awe of some of events that have taken place. The 5th book moves along at a much better pace than what we saw in Feast; after trudging through the Ironborn chapters and alongside Brienne in the previous book, I feel like Martin replaced my literary donkey with a Thoroughbred. Some of these plot twists are going to knock your hats off…and I still have half a book to read.
Whew.
-
Ah, just doin' the first 100 pages tonight and already it's off to a great start. After AFFC it does feel like meeting up with old friends again.

Wow. It has been a while for you hasn't it?
The only time I ever read that fast was during my 'Hyper Reading' phase in high school and when the 6th Harry Potter book came out. -
There is a new book on my table but I haven't finished my reread yet. Oh the drama!
But judging by your description, knowing that it will be good will hopefully let me get through Feast faster.
-
For those that don't yet have the book & need a pick me up: (No spoilers)
!
-
Hahahahaha, oh gosh, charmed! :D
That's just pretty damn awesome.
-
takes a bow as if she drew it
Now imagine it with Sean Bean's face :D You know you want to…..
-
I'm sincerely regretting my decision to pre-order ADWD instead of just picking it up at the store. I might have saved about $10 but its not worth the two more days of agonizing waiting knowing its just across the street.
Based on the feedback I'm getting from friends about the book so far is that its back up to par and is a nice recovery from AFOC which is very encouraging…
Plus, MORE MAPS!!!!! I don't know about anyone else but I'm a huge nerd for the geography in the series and I'm pumped to see how the world grew.
-
I know what you mean.
Four more days…
As for the geography, yeah, I'm the same way. I can't wait to see the new maps!
Also, yes, I finished Vicky's chapter. Hopefully the rest will be smooth sailing.
-
Finished "A Dance With Dragons" today, and it was quite the journey. I meant to write a quick POV assessment, but I frankly don't know where to start and I'm drained anyway, so I'll do it later. So much happens in this book. So much. And some of it flowed wonderfully, and some of it stumbled, but all of it left me wanting for more. (Enjoy those cliffhangers, by the way.)
Feels strange to have finally read the book I've waited 5 years for, and to have read it in less than two days. Now the wait for The Winds of Winter begins, but with luck it will not be as long a gap as the previous book. With luck…
-
I hear lord of White Harbor serves some mean pie.
-
i didn't notice any new map. i looked at the front and back and it looked like the typical north/south map
but 1000 sunny how did you spend too much buying online? i bought from amazon and got it on tuesday in the mail. that was release day right? and it only cost $18.
I see the normal cost of the book is $35, what was it in the store you saw?
-

I don't even know what that means and already I want to cry. :cwy:
! DABBBBOOOOOOOOSS!! (DAVOS!!)
It's like an edible Red Wedding isn't it? -

Using my membership to B&N I got it for $19, saving me $15 from buying from store but it shipped out Tuesday and is coming Friday.
And its just maps but
! there is a map of Valyria which is new and an improved map of the free cities

i'll have to look again when i get home at the maps.
but really wish there was some like poster size map or something you can buy.
i see on HBO they have a map but its only like a 11 x 17 size. also if as you said this is more detailed map, then don't want ot buy an inferior map of a region.
plus afraid it will have hbo's version of the house sigils/banners. I very much dislike the stark one

just finished dwd today. despite what felt like dozens of povs describing a massive amount of events and places, it still flowed well and was definitely one of the better books of the series, in my opinion.
one problem i had with it though; (can't stress SPOILERS!! enough)! the three cliffhangers involving asha, davos, and tyrion's supposed deaths eventually became annoying to me, especially because i was never convinced either davos or tyrion were dead (i was a bit more surprised when another asha chapter turned up). it felt like a ridiculous cliche every time, the sort of thing that used to frustrate me with redwall books, and stuck out particularly in a book from asoiaf, because main characters actually have died, and Martin is usually so good at being unpredictable. and about predictability, by the end it was obvious the book needed a pretty big death, and the more i read of the build up to and the content of quentyn's last chapter, the more painfully obvious it was to me that he would be it. the chapter might as well be called "the man who had to die to maintain the series gritty reality feel". to be fair though, i'm probably just nit-picking because i liked quentyn, and i'm still bitter about robb stark.

! yea i'm dissapointed in the last two books endings. it feels like every single POV character in each book ended with a "OMG is s/he dead?"
! just felt tacky and his way of trying to bring up contraversy and discussion. We know he can kill main characters, and he has done it before, but this leaving the books with like 6 potental DEATHS is just totally stupid. Either kill them in the book or don't. Don't leave a potential 5 year cliffhanger or more if it was at end of feast.
! i coudl live with any of those characters dying. would i be mad, yes i guess. But no death is as annoying as a "MAYBE" death for years of waiting. -
Finished ADWD today. So good.
! Was anyone else a bit annoyed with dany the whole time? I wanted her to be a strong queen but it seemed like she just kept making terrible, childish decisions. Also Jon Snow grew on me a lot this book, more than any other character i think. He's up there with Tyrion and Arya now. But his chapters were the hardest to read because i knew it wasn't going to end well for him. I wonder what will happen to him now. Also Victarion is a badass, it'll be a couple years but i can't wait to see that new arm of his on the show.
now the excruciatingly long wait begins for Winds of Winter.
-
Dammit! I'm going to go through another 3rd of the book today if it kills me!
(As soon as I bring a certain website up to date). -
well I've read ADWD and my sentiment is:
graaarbarabl cliffhangers
slightly spoilery
! In summary I don't think I liked it very much. It was heavy on Jon & Daenerys chapters, which imho were slightly boring/reactive. I would have found it a lot more interesting if it were told for example from Vals or Hizdars pov.
Also so many pov characters get tortured/shamed/sick/we-are-gonna-starve, no wonder Martin wasn't really motivated.heavy spoiler
! I consider it pretty much impossible that Jon Snow dies…not with (probably) most powerful red priestess hanging around.. since wall>stannis?
Aegons "reappearance" was a bit odd, was he necessary to untangle the knot?
Who else suspected that ADWD ends for Daenrys when she jumps on Drogons back XD?
..that scene was immensly satisfying. -
On the heels of the tremendous critical success of the show's first season, "Game of Thrones" is preparing to return to HBO in 2012. Today, EW has revealed two pieces of major casting; Carice van Houten as the sorceress Melisandre and Stephen Dillane as Lord Stannis Baratheon.
Based on the popular book series "A Song of Ice and Fire," by George R.R. Martin, the fantasy series chronicles an epic struggle for power set in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom. The ensemble cast includes Mark Addy, Sean Bean, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Fairley, Lena Headey, Kit Harington and Aidan Gillen.
Van Houten is best known for appearances in Valkyrie, Repo Men and Black Death. Dillane, meanwhile, appeared in The Hours, Spy Game and as Thomas Jefferson in the television mini-series "John Adams."
The pair join recently-announced season two newcomers Natalie Dormer as Margaery Tyrell and Gwendoline Christie as Brienne.

DAMMIT, just got spoiled on a major thing in book 5.
My own fault, its been out for a week, I should have gotten and read it immediately somehow despite my deadline cramming heavy schedule before a convention, but uggh. I was going to start reading it going to Comicon.
It was just trollishly and nonchallantly thrown about in a completely unrelated conversation, without a hint of spoiler warning. I don't know the hows, the whens or the whys, but… UGH. Bastard. I've been good about staying out all GoT related boards and everything.
FRUSTRATION LEVEL HIGH.
-
I don't see how it's your fault. It's only been a week since the book has been released, far too early for open discussion of major plot points unless you're sure you're speaking with people who have already finished the book. Whoever spoiled you was being extremely thoughtless, imo.
Carice van Houten as the sorceress Melisandre and Stephen Dillane as Lord Stannis Baratheon.
Can't really see van Houten as Mel (as of yet), but Dillane definitely seem workable. I can already imagine Dillane clenching his teeth, lol.
-
"Yes, but if HBO gets to season 5 I wonder if __________ when ______________. "
Seriously. That's how it was dropped on me. Major massive spoiler. Just non chalantly trolled into my lap. And they were totally trolling to get a reaction. Its incredibly frustrating. There will be plenty of other surprises, and I don't even know any details around it. but… ARGH.
I should have KNOWN trolls would be out in force now that the series has caught onto mainstream popularity. I knew to read Harry Potter books day of release and stay off the net entirely. Should have known with this series too.
-
It's a shame that fans have to all but sequester themselves from the internet to keep from getting spoiled by some happy assholes who delight in trying to ruin the adventure for others.
what jerks.
-
Damn, that sucks.
! Jorah's bringing Tyrion as a slave to Danys.
That sounds like a bad idea, especially since soon the slaves will be the ones having their day it looks like.
EDIT: Spoiler around page 400! Yay Davos!
I know that in any other series I would predict that they'd use a body double, but this series gets so depressing sometimes that you can't afford to be optimistic you know?
And I'm glad the disappearance of Rickon is finally being addressed.
