It's hypocritical. And wrong.
-
The flash forward with Macao and Charlie's prediction for the S-Trial arc has yet to come true yet. I dunno where one draws the line between one arc and the next - but Lucy's narration isn't suggesting to me this arc's over just yet, because I'm fully expecting a timeskip. If there is a timeskip of some sorts, in my mind, it'd begin after the jump. I don't really consider the Post-War arc in OP as all that separate from the Marineford arc, for example.
Your Ace v. Blackbeard comparison holds water, but only because they didn't start the New World arc right after. But okay, I'll give.
To make myself clearer, I was more arguing with FFA's "It's not really a surprise."
Over whether it showing up all of a sudden was a surprise to begin with, rather than whether it was a surprise last boss, which I was joking about.
Hinscher contended whether we're still in the same arc, but I called semantics - because I wasn't really interested in that but for giggles.
It's the question of "was this expected?" I care about.
-
Why on earth would this not be the same arc? Zeref was introduced and awakened here, and has talked about Acknologia or wahtever all through the arc. What is happening now ties directly to established events earlier on this island, and everyone is still on the island, exam or not. Consider it an epilogue if you will, but for the time being this is as much of a "new arc" as the "Kuma kicks everyones ass on thriller bark" arc.
And for the record, Ace vs Blackbeard coincided perfectly with the Enies Lobby fallout, with Teach learning of Luffys deeds, and plotting to go to the nearby water 7 to pick him up. I think it fits in pretty well with the water seven arc.
-
should the ace blackbeard arc start back in drum when we got word of both those characters. or in arabasta when ace told us he was chasing blackbeard
if this is the blackdragon, then was the edolas arc part of this arc too since we got word of the black dragon back before then
the s-class arc is over, anything now is either a new arc or just a brief little thing like blackbeard/ace fight that will have reprecutions later on
-
Holy crap. It actually worked.
-

There was never such a thing as the "Blackbeard/Ace arc". Like you yourself said, there were small comments about them both in Drumm, and Ace was responsible for spicing up the first act of Alabasta. Yes, hints are dropped that will be linked to future events, but they also contributed to the arcs in ways that had absolutely nothing to do with their overall storyline.
If you start splitting everything up in events like that you might as well talk about the "stuff going on behind the scenes in the WG" arc-fragment in the middle of Jaya, and ignore that the common topic in those scenes was Blackbeard - who was a major part of Jaya. And the "exam is over argument" is pretty weak. Is everything post Robins rescue in water seven a new arc? Everything after Moriahs defeat? Stuff like Bon Clay vs Hina at Alabasta?
I will repeat: Zeref was a major part of this whole arc. The villains goal was to find and wake him, and that has now been done. It's not like it's been several arcs since Zeref was in focus and that seeing him pop up again is a huge surprise, because he's been part of this arc from the get go.
If this is like Aokiji at Long-Ring-Long-Land and the next 100 chapters is going to be all about Zeref and his pet, then yeah this could be considered the start of a new arc.
But if this is like Aokiji at Water 7 then it's just an addendum to the arcs ending, and the next 100 chapters will be completely Zeref unrelated. -
It amuses me how a couple of pages back people were like "If Mashima doesn't start dealing with the dragons, I'm quitting Fairy Tail" and then he does.
Mashima is such a troll.
-
It IS a surprise.
It being here, right now, before the arc ends, is a surprise.
It hasn't been spoken of since Gildartz first appeared and it's been arcs since. It showing up here is a surprise. Just because Zeref dropped a few words about an Acnologia a few weeks ago doesn't make it being the Black Dragon and it being here any less unexpected.
It's only been 1 arc since that but I would argue on the fact that do we even know whether or not acknologia is actually that black dragon gildartz had trouble against.
-

It would make sense. I don't see why there would be two black dragons flying around, one named Acnologia and one not. Dragons seem to be extremely rare in Earthland, so two of the same color would be unlikely. Second, think of the other evidence we have. Zeref has fanged canines, a trait usually present in people who use Slayer Magic, particularly Dragonslayer (With Zancrow being the exception to the rule with his Godslayer magic). Plus, Gildarts said that the Black Dragon was no friend of mankind like the others were, meaning it kills people (which it tried to do with Gildarts and nearly succeeded). Something that detests mankind and is powerful enough to rip an SS-Class Mage nearly in half in a single swipe could easily be a Harbringer of Death.

i don't understand.. what is the connection/similarities between "ace vs BB part and W7" with black dragon appeared in this S-exam arc to use it as example for a surprise last boss in the same arc argument? ace vs BB happen on different island, different purposed and storyline than whatever happen in W7 and enies lobby. and BB didn't even meet/show up at W7 or Enies Lobby. Strawhats didn't even meet BB or Ace..

Have you even read One Piece? Then you would realize how ridiculous that statement is.
-
Well plus wasn't that Dragon hanging around the place of this "100 year mission" or something like that? So really no real reason for it to appear here unless it's a surprise last boss.

No, Natsu said he'd go to Mt. Zonia (where Gildarts encountered it) and Gildarts said it was pointless as it was no longer there, and that it was probably flying around the world.
-
Well for it to appear now, right at the end of an arc, when we really have no reason for it to be there outside of randomness really, that would qualify it as a surprise last boss for me.

The dragon, yes. We knew there was going to be something coming, though, since Zeref just told us something was coming. This goes back to my original argument with Silence. But Silence was right, and it is a surprise that Acnologia is apparently the Black Dragon. GM is arguing we don't know if it's the dragon that tore up Gildarts, but that's most likely the case. It's a surprise last boss in the sense that it's a dragon. It's not a "surprise last boss" if someone says, "Hey, guys, this thing is coming to kill/destroy/blow us up."
-
Yeah the S-class exam arc is over hades got beaten and its finished as per Makarov's statement. What were seeing now is one of those 4 chapter interludes(since were seeing Lucy's narration again) that go into the next arc.

this acnologia or black dragon is not a surprise last boss
a surprise last boss has to have a connection to the arc.
the arc was dealing with grimoire heart. this acnologia is not affiliated with grimoire heart. they are not working together, acnologia was not pulling grimoire hearts strings.
its a copmletely different enemy showing up. its like aokiji showing up after the foxy pirates arc. he wasn't a surprise last boss, he was just a surprise. had nothing to do with the foxy pirates.
-
Aokiji was a surprise last boss, but it was really a surprise, instead of it being a thing in arcs so often that you come to expect it.
-

Nothing. I just said that to lure out Hinscher into another pointless OP comparison argument like everyone is seriously having now. This thread is so fickle, it amuses me. Especially since the base of the argument is based off some dumb list left behind by Robby "for fun". Oh joy.
Just cross out "Surprise Last Boss" and move on already!
-
Aokiji was a surprise last boss, but it was really a surprise, instead of it being a thing in arcs so often that you come to expect it.
there is no way AOkiji was a surprise last boss. He had NOTHING to do with the Foxy arc.
If anything he was the beginning of the CP9 arc.
A surprise last boss is like Zero, or Kuma in Thriller bark. Those guys had relations to the arc. Zero was a part of Oracion Seis, Kuma was also a Warlord. This Acnologia has nothing to do with Grimoire Heart, just like Aokiji had nothing to do with the Foxy Pirates and the Davy Back games.
-
Kuma isn't that surprising, seeing as we saw him before in the arc and we never saw him leave. I don't know about anyone else, but when I saw Kuma it was more of a "Oh, forgot he was still here" more than a "He came out of nowhere"
-

He was a surprise when he showed up halfway through the arc.
A surprise final boss doesn't have to show up after everyone is beaten.
-
Well that would fit in as more of a "Surprise appearance who became the last boss" rather than a "surprise last boss". The former, given they have a good reason to show up, can fit well into a story. The latter however often seems forced and poorly written, especially in Fairy Tail's case of having poorly written villains.

All I'm saying is that it could be an entirely different creature. If in the next couple of chapters Gildartz does mention that it's the dragon he had trouble with than I will say ok FFA you are right but as of right now I'm sticking to it not being the black dragon
-

But guess who did have something to do with this arc?
Zeref.
Who is riding the dragon, heading for the place where a load of events all revolving around him happened. in this case, Aokiji was involved in davy back fight, if you will. That is the last thing I'll be saying on this subject until the next/few chapters, where we'll see if everything will be completely Zeref focused for the next arc, or whether FT will do something completely unrelated in the arc after the island gets nuked.

Well it's a dragon and it's black and there doesnt exist 2 dragons with the same colour for all we know in earthland atleast

.GH doesnt have a connection with Acnologia just that they summoned the thing -__-

I don't even think it's a dragon

I just hope that Tartarus and Raven Tail aren't pushovers like Oracion Seis and Grimoire Heart were… At least Hades put up a good fight until the cats blew up his unprotected heart...
I can't imagine what Ivan can do with his magic, though. From what we've seen, he makes Shikigami out of Paper. I'm sure he has other Magic, being that he's Makarov's son, but beyond that, I can't begin to guess.
And Tartarus we only know the name and that they're the most powerful Dark Guild in Fiore. After that we know nothing. We haven't even seen any of their members, unless someone we know reveals themselves to be a Tartaros member. Calling it now: Grand Doma is also the leader of Tartaros.

There are spoiler pics out. From what I can see:
! Acnologia (Natsu says it's a dragon, btw) touches down on the island and starts wrecking stuff. By the last page Makarov is trying to singlehandedly hold it off so that everyone else can escape.

Saw the spoiler pics. Looks like a good chapter.

I can't but be reminded of [hide] Whitebeard[/hide] with the end there.
Anyway [hide] glad it's not Gildatz, apparently [/hide]
-
So how many chapters is this new arc going to be?
-
Makarov in heaven on the cover page
Oh snap Makarov is gonna die
-
Huh, this looks like it could be a decent chapter. Here's hoping.
-
-
Nah, This is the Black Dragon arc,

Come on FFA.. you know Strawhats never meet them in CP9 saga.. you know that didn't you? or you actually never read One PIece…:ninja:
thanks Hiroy and Hinscher for the reply..

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you meant that the Strawhats never met BB or Ace, ever. All of them met Ace, Sans Franky, Brook, and Robin on Alabasta, and Luffy, Zoro, and Nami all met Blackbeard in Mocktown, and then all of them met his entire crew just before going up to Upper Yard.
-
Next bad chapter is out. Criticize please.
http://mangastream.com/read/fairy_tail/86710913/1 -
"Final orders" from the brave old man, sacrificing himself …
Fairy Tail feels like a total ripoff again, when it comes to certain things.
-
I bet he is not going to die.
-
Pretty good chapter although Makarov possibly dying is a bit more predictable then Gildartz dying. Hes been in near death states more then any other character in the manga.
-
I bet the dragon will be beaten by the power of friendship.
-
Dragon design is terrible. It's not even comparing to other series, Mashima has designed far better dragons in his own series.
It's hard to take a Markarov death scene seriously since this is the fourth time he's gone through with it? Twice in this same damn arc.
And what terrible dialogue in the end.
"Does the death of a person make you sad?"
"Can sadness itself kill a person?"God, Mashima can't write good, emotionally moving dialogue to save his life.
-
Even though it seems very likely Makarov is really going to die this time, there's still his son Iwan and the Gajeel spying thing. I'm still sceptical about Makarov dying before this is resolved.
-
Dragon design looks like it's something out of Pokemon
Don't even compare Makarov scene to Whitebeard
I will give Mashima credit for sticking to his arc ideal that sometimes you just gotta run away, doesn't excuse GH from being terribad though
I will so, so, so very hard if FT pulls a combo nakama power attack next chap and save Makarov

Hahahaha, oh that's so bad it'll probably happen.
