Yeah I bought a couple of voyages before the collections were announced, but at least Funimation's getting more One Piece money this way.

Also I'd like to introduce myself here. I have been watching this topic for months and finally decided to create an account to join the discussion.

Welcome to APForums! Yeah, not much has been happening on the DVD front. Pretty much just collection releases the past month or two. Usually talk gets more interesting with newer voyage releases, since there's more to talk about. Anyway, welcome.

On a different note, does anyone who owns collection one know if there are any extra features like behind-the-scenes or more commentary? or is it just newer trailers?

Thought so. I've been planning on getting collection one for my cousin. Just wanted to be sure I had all the minor differences down just in case he wanted to know the difference between voyages and collections.

According to the video, he has a reliable source that told him that the reason why Funimation is taking so long is because they are trying to get all the episodes before the time skip. That's about, what, 206-517 at least. Also, he says that they are also trying to get all the movies. I'm not saying this is true, but it could be a reason why Funimation is taking so long.

Really ?I never noticed it before.I saw this vid the other day and as much as i would like to beleive it is true ,I do not like to trust people when opposed to major corporations .Sorry for being a nuisance but just out of curiosity,how was it disproven?

funi hasnt said one word about op in months just that they are working to get more episodes i dont see how the video has been disproven either and in the vid he also talks about bigger op boxsets too if im not mistaken

(however this was also under this certain persons assumption that there would be a name change and a new series for op {{which their certainly will not be}} )

if this was in fact true something, or someone would have said something to that extent by now.

In short:
someone came in syaing: "hey,maybe funi hasnt pushed more one piece because their waiting for the first half to be over" so they can license the rest of the first half.
but there hasnt been anything to show for it

considering we still have till october before the first timeskip episode airs the first half of op still has to be aired in japan so i still think funi is waiting for them to air the last few episodes before anything happens

Well the video may be true and I hope that all is true. I think he could have said all that in about 5 minutes.

A few questions came to me. Why would Funimation go this far out for OP, I know it's one of their best series, but why would they try to get that much out of one negotiation, because if I am Correct they don't have so much money to spend on licensing. I can see why they want to get all those perks, but can they really afford all of that in one license, even at a reasonable price.

Well they got the first 205 episodes in about one license (yes I know 144 - 205 was the initial license, no need to point that out). So following the same logic the next 200 or so episodes they could license would put them right at the beginning of the Amazon Lily arc. Plus especially now the demand for more One Piece by FUNimation is big, so they would more than likely go for it, if Toei is in fact offering that kinda deal.

And if Toei wants to give them all those episodes than that also shows that they want more One Piece over here too.

I saw that video a week ago. FUNi wanting to get all the episodes before the timeskip doesn't make as much sense to me since it'll still be the same series. And later in the video he talks about FUNimation actually doing full season sets, which is the stupidest thing ever. I don't think this guy's friend knows half the stuff he's talking about. One thing I'm willing to believe is FUNi trying to get all the movies, I think they know how much we want them, and with the first 7 SHs already being part of the anime dub, that means they have 7 whole movies that they can release at the moment (obviously not counting Movie 8).

But, seeing this video makes me wonder….

If I were FUNimation, I wouldn't want this kind of information leaked to the public, and dire actions may be taken. Back in 2009 when they got the rights to the simulcast, they were all set and ready to go with Episode 403, but as you know someone leaked the episode early and they deprived us of our One Piece "for the immediate future". Now if they catch wind of this kind of stuff then they might have to do the same thing.

Then again, part of the reason that they took away the simulcast was because they needed to find the perpetrator, obviously this guy's identity is out there; so the worst that could happen is his YouTube account is deleted. But I'm just sayin'. It's just a thought.

That's the thing, though. The simulcast incident involved a lone wolf hacker who knew the ins and outs of the FUNimation video portal breaking in to their website and stealing FUNimation property. This is nothing more than information. At worst, they'll try and sweep the leak under the rug if it turns out to be real. I don't see how this can harm FUNimation's bidding attempts for more of the series (unless Toei didn't know this was what FUNimation was up to or someone else is gunning for the rights, both of which I highly doubt). If this is real though, the best course of action for FUNimation would be to keep the video up if they want to keep their strategy secret. A C&D order or shutting the video down will only lead to suspicion.

I doubt that Funi will do something like that. If anything it might all come down to price negotiations with Toei. After all, Toei makes the final call when it comes to these kind of things.

i agree.The last thing everyone wants is for funimation to come out and say we are on the verge of a major deal ,then something goes wrong and we already have our hopes up by the time it collapses.I much prefer the "we are in negotiations" statement,as it means ( i know this has been discussed countless times) we WILL be getting more episodes,it is just a matter of time.

Exactly. They've told us in the past that they've been trying to get One Piece on TV again. That's really all we need to know until it actually does get on TV.

I don't think FUNimation should even care about the video. What harm is it causing, for all anyone knows this could be some guy just making the entire thing up.

Also I don't think putting One Piece back on T.V. is a bad thing at all. If advertised correctly they show could gain some new fans, those new fans combined with the current fans could help increase the popularity of the series by word of mouth. Look at the popularity One Piece has gained from just DVDs, imagine how much more effective a TV deal would be. Also it's been four years since the 4kids dub was even on T.V. I'm sure the damage they did doesn't hold a major impact. I think a T.V. Deal would be great for One Piece, and if things do go wrong, it can always be pulled off.

One Piece has been on Funi's channel. All the episodes they showed were from Season 2 Seventh Voyage (s2v7).

agreed, i cant really see any channel out there interested in it. the show just doesn't fit in, with anything on tv. i believe weve already discussed this topic to death in the past. and the conclusion was that it was too kiddy for night time slot, and some themes are a bit too mature for the kiddie demographic. add that with the infamous dub and…. yeah im droning on

I don't think it's that, I think it's just that the channels out there don't see how the show would benefit them. Lance Heiskell has said channels want something that's gonna guarantee them big ratings or something they own.

yes I think finding a channel to put One Piece on is the hard part, but should it be put onto a good channel advertised correctly I feel it could be a success. Both of you make fine points as to why it is the hard part.

Also if I remember correctly the guy in the video said FUNimation was trying to realease season four in either 26 episode collections or 22 episode voyages. I don't think he said anything about season sets.

I re-watched that part. The way he words it sounds rather speculative. It also sounded as though this would be something FUNimation would do AFTER collections.

I don't think the Season Sets sound like a good idea if they're the same "seasons" used for the voyages. As they're various lengths. Maybe it was just supposed to be larger collections. Maybe something like the Dragon boxes, but That part is definitely lowering the reliability of the video. It's way too early for FUNimation to consider planning something like that.

That's exactly what I was thinking. And he did say it was the same seasons already used in the Voyages, he specifically talks about Seasons 1-3. The problem with it is not that it's too early, it's just that its a horrible idea and nobody would buy it. FUNi's not dumb enough to think anyone would purchase a Season 2 set, for instance.

The people that wanted to support them right away bought all those DVDs, and the people who wanted to wait for a cheaper release are currently getting the Collections. So who's left? And why would they spend extra money?

Maybe funi is thinking about releasing one piece on blu ray. That sounds nice but it's farfetched since most long running anime never get those releases in America or Japan. I think funi is taking an average amount of time to liscence op just like any other show. Its not uncommon for a show to go on hiatus to dub more episodes or lisence more episodes.

Are you talking about Season 4 or what they already have? If you mean Season 4 and beyond, they run into issues with Toei if they have any intent of releasing those episodes on Blu-Ray themselves. If you meant 1-206, that all depends on how the show was mastered. If it was on 16mm film, there shouldn't be too much in the way of trouble. If it was digital, then the upconverts are going to look bad.

Wasn't the show mastered digitally though? I mean, I know One Piece has been digitally inked and colored since the first episode.

And that costs a lot of money. They can remaster their own series on Blu-ray if they want to. That wouldn't be a Toei negotiation.

And the Season 4 episodes were released in 4:3 on DVD originally.

I went to Dragon*Con this past weekend and Mike McFarland was signing (for free!). He signed my senior year book as Master Roshi and I got a picture. Kyle Hebert signed my Gurren Laggan box set (PLEASE THE HUMANS). Why do I tell you all this? Because I got an exclusive interview with Mike, and hate to say it, the video didn't turn out too well. I did, however, got my lazt ass off the couch and transcripted it for you guys.

Me: So, Mike, I have to ask: In sert general question about the future of One Piece?
Mike: (laughs) Just hold on a little longer.
Me: Luckily, I'm a pretty patient guy… (laughs)
Mike: Now go tell the internet to be patient...

Ha. As you can tell, not much info, but it was a nice exchange of words. Oh, and before I forget I ate lunch with Kyle Hebert right before the signing. It was awesome, and he wore a hat to keep himself hidden. I didn't recognize him beside me until halfway through my meal.

My money is still on before NYAF. I think it'll be the announcement made a week beforehand. That's really the only time I can see it possibly done this year unless they do what they did back in 2008 and announce a massive number of licenses at the end of the year with some sort of game.

You guys do realize that they don't have to make the announcement at a Con right? In fact the only time I can ever remember a One Piece announcement at a con was when they were announcing they got the rights to the series initially.

I could totally see them making a post on their blog saying that the deal finally pulled through and having some contest to celebrate it. Not trying to sound like a jerk or anything, but if we do get an announcement at a con, I don't think it'll be for a while.
