I just hope spandline isnt weak like spandam. I want him to use shigan :D
Chapter 393 "Olvia" Discussion
-
-
I have a very bad feeling that Robin gets reunited with her mom right before Aokiji or someone killes Olivia.
And I really want to know what happened during the lost history that the world Govt is willing to go so far to keep it forrgotten.
-
I was thinking in exchange for the golden moushi could it be iceman saves robin or doesent kill her. Some warped exchange to spare the child. shrug I'm more curious about how and who used the actual bustercall. As good as it is to see robin's past I'm really getting interested in the dynamics of the WG and its policies.
-
So Kuzan the Ao Kiji finally appears
And Nico Olvia too, this is gonna be a big bang
Sauro is maybe one of Gol D. Roger's crew man ?
And it seems like Gol D. Roger didn't have a scholar from Ohara in is crew or at least Olvia wasn't in it
Maybe Sauro is going to save Kuzan the Ao Kiji from the Buster Calls power (and that might be the reason he said to Luffy that he own his grandfather)
-
Wow, AP's finally back. Thank goodness for the main page and KEFI.
Thanks everyone who did translations and summaries.
This piqued my curiousity:Crew: Don't come if you want to stay with your kid.
Crew: If it's about your husband's work, we can…
Olvia: No, let's go.What about her husband's work? And who/where is this mystery husband?
So there is a chapter next week, but not the following. That's good, although I won't be saying that next week.
-
Yeah, Robin's mystery father has me more intrigued than anything.
and yeah, I downloaded this at noon and couldn't read it until nearly eleven at night. Damn you getting overloaded Arlong Park!!
-
Hmm, Robin's father probably also is involved with the "Missing History" like all the Ohara scholars seem to be. Hence why Olvia went out, she has to finish his work both as a scholar and his wife.
Robin's uncle doesn't seem to be so bad, but man, what a bitch of an Aunt! And Oda still hasn't explained how Robin got a Devil Fruit.
Yeah, it's got me wondering on the specifics of Sauro's relationship to Luffy. He just may be Luffy's grandfather, but if that's the case then he and Ace sure are runts . . . . .
But if Oda is acknowledging the inter-breeding between giants and humans, then that certainly explains the size of Blackbeard and Whitebeard.
Man I feel weird talking about the science of all this . . . .
-
Maybe Olvia's husband is a pirate and that's why she's worried about his work, being married to a pirate and all. If Robin's father is a pirate and Olvia sets sail as well, there would be a good chance that Robin would become parentless permenantly.

Suck to be the woman banging the giant. Who knows though, maybe giants are giants down there.
-

Seriously ! Robin's aunt is like the ______bag of the century, you fill in the blank O_o; I'm getting serious Uma Thurman vibes from Olvia though. That dress thing she's wearing on p14 ? The black stripe ? Yeah, I see the Bride there
Part that has me intrigued is how the heck Sauro knows about all of this. The will of D doesn't necessarily mean they're GOING to be a pirate, I don't think; maybe he thought it meant being part of the Marines and he realized that that wasn't the way the will was pointing him ? … Or something. I don't know, I have too much 2a(dx)=v^2-vnot^2 in my head right now :(
-
Maybe Sauro is going to save Kuzan the Ao Kiji from the Buster Calls power (and that might be the reason he said to Luffy that he own his grandfather)
Um, dunno. Why would Sauro save Kiji from the Buster Call, when Kiji is most likely to be heading it up, along side four other Vice Admirals?
Just a guess, but I'd say Sauro's downfall, coupled with the successful destruction of Ohara could've paved the way for Ao Kiji's promotion to Admiral. Thus, he sort of owned Sauro a favor for that?!
-
Maybe somebody leaks the information to Spandine that Robin is a scholar, so he orders her execution. Kuzan (Ao Kiji) protests that Robin is just a kid, and Spandine orders his execution as well, seeing as how they intend to wipe out the entire island with the Buster Call he's been given permission to use. Spandine orders his men to turn their guns on Kuzan, preparing to shoot him down, when suddenly, Saul comes rushing in front of him, taking the bullets in his stead and giving him the chance to take Robin into "protective custody".
-
Great avatar, Battle Franky.
That's why you should go to ocean's forum at kefi.org when AP is down, someone posted a translation there much earlier.
I was trying to post it all day, but AP was down. :(
When AP's down, I usually post my translations at the One Piece community at LiveJournal.

Who IS Spandine? I know he's part of CP9, but what's his obvious relation to Spandam? Ever since someone pointed out, uh, I think character simmilarities between Clover, the fat female archeologist, and the appearance of CP9, this flashback's affect of me has been reduced. It's already unnerving enough to see Olvia as a carbon copy of older Robin, but noticing simmilarities all over the place is, dare I say it…well, luninspired. Unless Spandam is Spandine's brother, or perhaps father, I'm still won't be able to shake off this "unoriginal" feeling in regard to the characters (not story) of this flashback. :/

I think there's several reasons why people think Spandam and Spandine are somehow related:
1. Their physical appearances.
2. The play on names. Spandam, Spandine; Usopp, Yassop; etc.I don't think the fat female archaeologist had more than a line or two in the manga. What similarities does she share with Clover? And how does the appearance of CP9 compare?
-
Actually, I think this is the second. Didn't Nami's flashback feature a Flash-within-a-flash of Bellemere finding little Nojiko and baby Nami?
Nope, it´s the third at least: in the manga, in Chopper´s flashback, there´s a flash-within-a.flash" when Dolton remember what happened in that Kings reunion…)
-
Oh yeah. That's right. Forgot about that one. The anime did it as its own seperate flashback but it was a flash-within in the manga.
-
Nice chapter, the last page was freeezing with chills
Sooo the battle between Scholar vs Marines happens in next chapter
I guess if the marines and CP9 got owned by Scholars, then its time for Buster Call -
Maybe, if CP9 does have trouble here, ti'll be what inspires whoever gives the orders later to make sure current recruits are trained in Rokushiki?

The fat female archeologist looks like Terracotta, Igaram's wife.
People made comparisons between Hiliruk and Clover. They really don't look like one another, but that got me in the "look for unoriginal character" mindset. This has only been made worse by seeing Olvia, whom as I said before, is virtually a carbon copy of Robin.
-
One thing that already amazes me with this flashback is how Oda twists the introduction of precious people to Robin chapter after chapter.
After reading ch 391 I was like "Clover and the archeologists are Robin´s most precious persons that she´s going to lose." That would already be more people then any other Strawhat lost in the past.
Then came ch 392 and I was like "OMG! Now she even meets a giant. And he seems to be even more precious then Clover to her."
And now in this chapter I´m like "Holy Fuck! Even her mother is alive and she returned to Ohara. What the…?"
It all begins to make sense somehow. While Zoro lost Kuina, Nami lost Bellemere, Usopp his mother and Chopper Hiluluk (and Luffy/Sanji lost Shanks´ arm/Zeff´s leg), Robin is probably going to lose Olvia, Saulo, Clover and the whole bunch of archeologists. The whole intensity of her Buster Call trauma starts to make sense now.
-
I still don't see it. If it was stuck at Clover, I'd think she was a retard. Sauro, well, that's gonna be tough. And the mom thing will be big if she finds out. But still, besides Sauro, I doubt any of these people are tough enough to explain why she fears the Strawhats' defeat.
Nice and in High Quality too.
I take it that was Olvia walking on the water last chapter? Cool, so she's a Devil Fruit user too.
Looks like this Giant could be Luffy's grandpa then…if Aokiji is here.
Devil fruit? No. Well, nothing that was displayed anyway. People were just SO INTO it being Aokiji that they started to imagine the ice freezing, I guess.
I hated the pages with Sauro. I get annoyed when someone spends seven pages showing that they know something but not even saying anything.
And Olvia…haha. I felt that when she crossed paths with Robin, she passed the torch. Olvia screws Ohara, Robin screws whoever she allies with.

See it from an 8 year old kids perspective. Every living person that has some positive meaning to her life is right now at Ohara. And with one swipe of the Marine they will be erased from this world. And not only the people themselves, even her entire home (the island) is going to get destroyed. Everything that is good in her life will be wiped out. Such a development is even very traumatic for adults leave alone an 8 year old kid.

Excellently put, Ivotas
Another great chapter. I'd say another 3 chapters of flashback to go (the last one being partial flashback as the tradition goes)

I have to agree, beautifully put. Anyone who has lost everything knows how difficult that sort of pain is to deal with, even years after the event has occured.
I actually am enjoying this flashback, in contrast to what appears to be the general consensus. Some complain that the characters' designs look very similar to other characters, but I think that Oda does a better job of differentiating characters through original character designs better than most mangaka. Try reading Yuu Watase or Arina Tanemura if you can't stand characters looking too similar; their characters are sometimes impossible to differentiate.
I do feel that in comparison to the Enies Lobby arc, these chapters are a little bit rushed. And perhaps in that rush, some of the characters seem similar to previous characters. I thoroughly believe that if Oda wasn't constrained by his page limits, that we'd have very well-fleshed characters that are quite different from the previous characters they're being compared to.
Given that Robin is her mother's daughter, I see no reason why Olvia and Robin cannot be similar in personality or even appearance. Just as most people inherit their parents' genetics and appearance, there are some who inherit the interests of their guardians in childhood. I don't see why it would be terribly improper for Robin to develop likes, dislikes, and a personality not unlike her mother. This chapter made it quite clear that Robin admires her mother a great deal, even if they have been seperated for a long time, and perhaps aspires to be like her. People generally try to assimilate character traits they admire into their own personalities, and I think this is the case for Robin.
I am looking forward to the next few chapters, and I hope that they manage to give the dissenters a little more faith in Oda's work.

Very true. But if it was just Clover's gang, I don't think I would've seen it as a problem. So they push around a 300 year old man and a few librarians.
For some odd reason, when Olvia first appeared, I thought of Robin's "uncle" being her real dad and her "aunt" being her stepmom.
-
Oh my god….young Ao Kiji is friggin awesome!
Sunglasses... -
Aokiji looks like Howard Stern….

I think the Buster Call is going to be a "last-resort" weapon; we're going to see all the archaeologists, Sauro, Robin, and Olvia all put up a good fight before they're all put down with the Buster Call.
After reading this chapter, I think that the uncle is either a good friend of Olvia, or her brother. The aunt cannot possibly be Olvia's sister.
-
He kinda goes along with his wife, so I don't think he could have been a friend. I think he's a brother that felt obligated to take Robin in.

But he actually defended Robin, saying that "she's only two".

It´s not the age that matters. It´s that they are wiped out with one swipe. If you think about WWII then there were jews that were able to escape the Nazi´s when they were "cleaning house". Of course as civilists they wouldn´t have stood a chance against the SS but if they couldn´t be found then they were already victorious.
Same could be said about old Clover and the rest. If they run away and hide well, they could probably escape but the Buster Call nullyfies (is that even a word?) the escape chances. Old, young, strong, weak, threat to the world or not one swipe wipes everything out. That´s the trauma.
If you look at it, it´s not that different from Nami. A strong merman shoots a (compared to him) weak human woman in the head. You could also say that it doesn´t require a super strong merman to do that. But still he did and that´s how Nami´s trauma started. I don´t see the Buster Call any different.
Plus, I don´t think that the Buster Call will be launched because of the archeologists themselves. If that was the case the fleet would probably be on it´s way already. It is more likely that CP9 will find difficulties with taking the scholars away (probably because of Olvia and Saulo) so there might be no other chance then to call for that destructive power. However that might be wrong because I completely forgot to include Kuzan in that picture.
-
Oliva gotta be strong, she manage to escape in a Marine ship with no soilders around.
Robin is afried of the Straw-Hat's defeat is because she lost so many people, Robin don't want her current friends to suffer the same fate. I too though Clover would be someone Robin would lose but here comes Sauro and Oliva. Who's next?
391: Clover
392: Sauro
393: Oliva
394: ???

It's 'nullifies' and yes there's such a word
Who thinks Spandain is gonna get beaten by archaeologists if he doesnt have rokushiki in 393 besides me?
-
Ah, didn't catch that he was the one defending Robin. Thanks for the translation, Selphish. But the wife treats Robin like crap, so I assume he doesn't really do anything about it.
It´s not the age that matters.
Well, I think of it like my grandpa. He was a bar owner, and I've no doubt he kicked some ass, even when I was little. If he lost a fight when I was 8, I would've been devastated. But now I'd be like "oh, so someone beat up a 68 year old man."

True. But if for every 10,000 Nazis there were swordsmen able to hack trains and rubber men able to withstand bullets and nail hundreds at a time, I don't think they would've been so intimidating.
If you look at it, it´s not that different from Nami. A strong merman shoots a (compared to him) weak human woman in the head. You could also say that it doesn´t require a super strong merman to do that. But still he did and that´s how Nami´s trauma started. I don´t see the Buster Call any different.
He had a grip on absolutely everything, though. I think his crew of four beating that fleet easily was to show us just how in control he was. Nami saw for 8 years how nothing had been able to stop him. I guess how Aokiji could be to Robin, but she seems to fear the call itself more.
-
when the straw hats meet ao kiji, robin already knows his ability. so does he already have it at that time or did she just learned about it later?
-
I'd say he has it, 'cause I seriously can't picture Kiji rising through the Marine ranks to vice-admiral purely on his own merits.
-
Yeah, I think when it comes to power, he's not far from VA level, but because of all the important crap that's gonna go down…
-

so maybe nobody will be able to escape on boats because aokiji will make an ice belt around ohara.
-
Robin will escape on Saul's raft. Mark me words. XD
Okay, so it's been said already, I don't care. It's just a super strong hunch on my part.
-
I think this attack made Aokiji an admiral
-
Well, I think of it like my grandpa. He was a bar owner, and I've no doubt he kicked some ass, even when I was little. If he lost a fight when I was 8, I would've been devastated. But now I'd be like "oh, so someone beat up a 68 year old man."
That was never the point. The point is that the death of precious people can create trauma´s and make you look at the responsible persons or objects in a new light.
For instance if Clover would have been run down by a train then Robin would have a different attitude towards trains. If mermen would have killed them, then she would probably think different about them. And if a Buster Call kills him then your opinion about Buster Calls gets influenced. The question whether a Buster Call is a too strong power to use against a scholar or not doesn´t matter. The sole fact that the Buster Call is responsible for it is what matters to become Robin´s horror. He had a grip on absolutely everything, though. I think his crew of four beating that fleet easily was to show us just how in control he was. Nami saw for 8 years how nothing had been able to stop him. I guess how Aokiji could be to Robin, but she seems to fear the call itself more.
But that´s the point actually. He is so strong and yet he gets "wasted" to smash a weak woman. What killed Bellemere was a bullet in the head. It didn´t have to be a savage merman who did it, because even a little kid could do something trivial as pulling the trigger.
That´s all I´m trying to say with that comparison. There´s certainly weaker stuff then Arlong that is still superior to Bellemere and could kill her and yet it was Arlong who did it and that´s why he is Nami´s horror.
Same goes for the Buster Call and Clover. It doesn´t take down a fleet of ten warships to take down an archeology professor but that doesn´t mean that it can´t happen and become Robins horror that way. Plus as I said, it is not only Clover but the fact that literally everybody and everything that had a precious meaning to Robin (of what Clover is only one part) has been anihilated with one strike. That´s something that no other Strawhat has experienced so far.
394: Kuzan
???
Err,…Joekido was talking about precious people to Robin that died.
-
oohh… thankyou for the trans ^^ now I understand what's happened in this chapter.
wow... Sauro knew too much for a giant. maybe he is a part of marine or something like somebody has suggested. but he also knew that Robin's mom is coming =/ who is he actually? hope Oda'll explain
and apparently Robin didn't miss her mom, she didn't recognize her!! aw... this even make me 'hate' the scene >< please don't let them reunite when somebody was about to die.... noo..... >< please don't.... really have a bad feeling about it
and I totally agree with Ivotas about the 'trauma' part. I really can't agree more ^^
oh, and thank's god we'll still have new chapter next week... but I just can't imagine what kind of torture will come the next week (2 weeks later) >_< -

Beautifully said. This goes wonderfully with the World War II nuclear bomb parallel. I think that while the World Government has the capacity to usurp control over Ohara, it's much easier to simply extenguish it completely.
Not only young and old, weak, or threat to the world are eliminated, but so are guilty and innocent. Those who studied poneglyphs or those who didn't. Those who were wanted by the world government, and those who were not.
A weapon of mass destruction is non-judgemental. It kills without discrimination.
-
Nope, it´s the third at least
At least fourth actually; the Norland flashback was a story being told to Wiper when he was a kid. In fact, there are at least two flashbacks within a flashback within a flashback during that story.
Hmm… I never noticed it before, but the man who orders Norland's execution is holding a Bible that looks like a variant of the one Bartholomew Bear carries to the Shichibukai meeting. Bear must be from North Blue, if not from Lyneel itself.
-

Maybe because Sauro might be a W.G. oficial or a High Marine patent (this could be a reason why Luffy freaked)
I still don't know if Kuzan the Ao Kiji is in a Buster Call ship or not
But if he saw Nico Robin he probably landed in Ohara maybe he fall asleep when Buster Call was to attack and Sauro grabbed him a throwed him to the sea:laugh:
Althought this is just pure speculation that would be funny to see (a sky rocket Kuzan the Ao Kiji like Sogeking/Usopp) XD
-

Or it let's you live and suffer from all kind of illnesses rest of your life. Even carring it to your childers, if you can have those cuty little things anymore, that is.
Late, like always, but a thank you for the chapter and translation(s). And what an incredible chapter it is! Really, I feel like a broken record but Oda should stick with flashbacks.

I used to think it was of some importance until I noticed either Oda or his assistant fudged up the Bible design. If you look at the one he carries off the ship and compare it to the one he holds during the meeting it's totally different. They seem to enjoy putting Roman designs on the Bible and that's about it…..which is terribly ironic considering.....
