Now things might get intersting.
And it's quite a sight to see Zebra's troll thing monster's face look at you from under the cape of Grim Reaper.
Too bad Komatsu didn't bring a storage container. He could have saved some of the mellow cola, bottled it, and sold it for a lot of money.
As usual it was a good chapter. I'm just glad I had some Coke on me when I was reading it so I didn't feel too jealous of Toriko getting to drink "The Best Cola IN the World". Yes. Always have food on you when reading Toriko. And BTW, Zebra is badass. I think he's my favorite character even if he's only been in the series for a dozen or so chapters. I just really like his personality and how cool he is. And if you've been on TV Tropes then you'd know what I'm talking about when I call him a Type III antihero. He's a Good Is Not Nice character, he's definitely good, but not nice by any means. Which is cool. Toriko and Zebra's interactions next chapter will be interesting too, I wonder if they'll decide to split up after this new development.
I'm curious to see how the popularity poll will go. I'm thinking Toriko and Zebra get the top two spots, but I don't know anything about the japanese fanbase's response to the charaters. Still, I can see them winning the top spots on virtue of being main chaacter and unquestionable badass, since I feel like Toriko has less female readers than other jump manga, and doesn't exactly have the major fangirl bait anyways

I heard that it had a pretty high female reader base, what with all the MANLY MEN! FIGHTING! AND GETTING ALL SWEATY! WITH THEIR CLOTHES GETTING TORN! since female Jump readers seem to be mainly considered with how hot the guys are in the series and how much female directed fanservice there is. So Toriko is probably pretty awesome for them.
I want to talk about the Togashi thing again, sorry if it's off topic, but it's not like we can discuss HxH again until Togashi comes back; yes I've read on TV Tropes the stuff that Jay said with him having an interest in homoerotic subtext. I gotta be honest with you, what I've read/watched of Yu Yu Hakusho (about half) and Hunter x Hunter (vast majority of it) I haven't found there to be that much gay subtext. I remember Robby saying that it looked like Leorio had serious feelings for Kurapica and I honestly didn't feel that there was that much indication of it. I don't have a problem with gay subtext (unless it's done the "Naruto" way where there's way too much of it that it distracts from the story, and it's not written well) but I didn't find there to be that much.
I can understand why someone would interpret subtext between Killua and Gon most notably in the Ants arc, but I think I agree with Robby when he said. They're 12. Try not to interpret too much from it. I think it's more along the lines of Killua respecting and caring about Gon more than anyone else, since Gon is his first and best friend, and the first person (possiby only since he never seemed too chummy with Kurapica or Leorio) he ever cared about. That's why he's so loyal to Gon and always tries to do everything he can to look after him. You might interpret it as gay, and it does border on it at times, but I'd say it's more along the lines of a really super deep friendship. They're basically heterosexual life partners who don't really care to express their heterosexuality.
I'm sorry, this is OT, you know I wouldn't be discussing HxH in other threads if we could actually post in the HxH thread. But sadly we can't, because the series is still on hiatus. DAMN YOU TOGASHI!
Yeah, but I feel like in Japan the fangirl bait tends to be bishonens. Still I can see your point, I just feel its comparitively lower
This popularity poll will be interesting. Toriko and Komatsu will most likely get spots #1 and #2. But I really don't care who gets what, it's still exciting.
I just hope it doesn't turn out like the Naruto poll, and have someone who clearly doesn't deserve the #1 spot get it. You know your poll is a failure when Uchiha Sasuke is the most popular character.
Theory! Zebra will keep the Sphinx as his partner. It seems way too chummy with him right now.
I hope Zebra will be high up. We've seen him only for a little while but he deserves a top spot.
Forth chapter in a row leaves me with quite spicy cliffhanger. Aside from One Piece rarely any other weekly manga gave me an interesting cliffhanger. Much more several in a row. I was hoping that there would be no cola, because surely not always you get ingredient. And there would be need for another nourishment. Mainly because I'm a little scared and itchy to read chapters with quarrel about Zebra's condition (I always try to skip such places in manga, guilty). But my body is ready for the next chapter. It's much more interesting to see how this turns out, rather than skipping conditions due to loss of Cola.
I feel there might be a Bishokuya and Chief trio. Why not? There would be more ball-crushing foods coming and Zebra said nothing about pinnacle of ingredients yet, so no crossing with Toriko's main. Looks like Zebra is bored by his isolation(not like he is REALLY under arrest) and found traveling for ingredients and chief combos intriguing. He most likely planned to ask Head to let him prepare and enter Gourmet World too, perhaps even find a chief (if that was planned, Shimabukuro would have given him one), but settled for Komatsu. Komatsu can't leave Toriko - what about all those 'sweet' overtones between them? But Zebra takes no 'no' and they already have a deal. So I see only one thing happening - a trio. Or, as it was mentioned, they all form a party of 5, because Gourmet world is hard and treacherous. I don't know if Sani will agree to join them (travel with them like I'm weak?) so he needs a cook of his own. And new cook needs introduction time.
Or Komatsu becomes a party's cook and will travel with Kings who will need him. But that contradicts with spirit of manga, so that is unacceptable.
One thing I've been wonder is..
You know who the Human world supposedly has a lot of rare/almost extinct ingredients
Example:
Regal Mammoth - seems there is only the mother and the baby.
Rainbow Fruit - IGO had to reproduce it
Salamander Spinx - Seems to be a one of a kind creature, are there more somewhere else?
^ Do you think these ingredients originated in the Human world, or do you think there are more of them in Gourmet world?
What a great chapter! Man Toriko freaking delivers on each and every chapter. Did mangastrem drop Toriko or what?
We could have our own mini character poll here. Post your favourite character and why.
My favorite has to be Zebra for being one of the most badass characters in manga. Honestly, I feel like he's right up there with characters like Zoro
I think I like Toriko best, because he has the attacks that appeal to me the most, and the most badass scenes. as expected, he's the protagonist after all.
but second would be Match. I really liked his design, and the spread where he cuts Borry is extreme and awesome.
…
I'm very thirsty now.

And Guts. And Jack Rakan. And Whitebeard. Someone should make a list of the top ten most badass characters in anime and manga it would be an interesting list that's for sure. I personally wouldn't put Zebra that high just yet, he still needs more panel time. But I must say he is well on his way to leaving his mark in the history of manga badasses.

You didn't mention Kenshiro.
FOR SHAME.
Ironically Scar also deserves a nod. I doubt he would be highly ranked but his name can be mentioned in the conversation (I like ur new AV as well Kareem ~~ I was going to make a FMA themed AV a bit ago, I was going to use Wrath).
Also…
http://mangastream.com/read/toriko/99235355/8
…I totally agree that Zebra deserves a mention and given the fact that he is a relatively young character (from a readers perspective) few have had moments that ^^ badass that early on.

I haven't read nearly enough of Fist of the North Star to really say for sure if he deserves to be there. Also I would add either Scar or Roy Mustang from FMA to that list. I personally think only one character per series should be on the list. So you're going to have to choose between Zoro or Whitebeard for the list (I know, it's unbelievably painful to choose ) I've also thought about having a seperate list for heroes and one for villains. I don't think either Kenshin or Sano deserve to be in a list of most badass heroes, (I still like them though) but Shishio has a pretty good chance of being in the villains list. As cool as they are I don't think Gon or even Killua can make the top ten, but Hisoka is pretty much a shoo in for the villains list. Anyway I'm thinking of starting this as it's own thread so other people can chip in if they want.
Edit: Hah, Citylights 31 we were on the exact same page there .

Then why did you mention Whitebeard when the person you quoted mentioned Zoro? Burn.

Aaronrules 380 is my good friend and he personally thinks Zoro is more badass. I don't know, Whitebeard may've only been in about two or three dozen chapters but he was just made of epic. Personally I think we should turn this into its own thread because I've actually been wondering for a while who the greatest manga badasses are. Since manga does indeed provide a lot of very epic, tough as nails characters and I would like to see what other characters people would put in their lists.
GreeLing from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is pretty bad ass.
this is my tentative list of biggest manga badasses (that I am personally familiar with)
10. Sakaki Shio
9. Simon the Digger
8. Junichiro Koizumi
7. Eikichi Onizuka
6. Nicholas D. Wolfwood
5. Zaraki Kenpachi
4. Jack Rakan
3. Kujo Jotaro
2. Toriko
1. Kenshiro
Great chapter. That birdman sure is tough as hell. I seriously thought it would still be alive after all that deadly beating. Now to see the outcome of the Zebra-Komatsu agreement…
And for shame guys, how can you mention Roy and Scar and forget about Wrath/Bradley? He's more badass IMO.

Don't worry he's totally in my top three along with those two, although my personal choice is Scar. And I just started the thread, feel free to chip in. I'm sure TLS will mention Jack Rakan, and indeed he is VERY DESERVING.
Looks like the newest anime episode (the one that aired tonight) did NOT rap up the Battle Wolf arc. Next episode, Toriko VS the GT Robot. Toei might finally be taking things slow now.
Here's the preview: http://www.fujitv.co.jp/GPplayer/e/GPplayerJMe.html?anime/toriko/110529toriko&type=flv
This doesn't warrant much of a discussion, but I was just wondering, did we have a power rank between the 4 heavenly kings discussion yet?
I'd go for Zebura > Toriko > Coco > Sani.
But in a fight: I guess Coco can take out Toriko w/ his poison & all.
I almost agree
Zebra > Toriko > Sunny > Coco
imo
I would not put Coco in the line. A little to the side. He can one-hit KO anybody with his poison (of various kinds!) if he gets the opening. It's like a knife fight. Zebra is strongest, no doubt. He can give a ranged fight and a close beating. And Sani…I don't know. Up close he is deadly, so ranged assault is the only choice. But he can built up some defence too. They all are just too different to be judged together. And I like it.
Who could say no to that face.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!
Also coverpage of 141 is really….. Gay.
Terry!!…......
Finally started reading the past Toriko again…a few thoughts:
1. For some reason I really like the idiot weakling that showed up in the Puffer Whale Fish arc...always good to have a Mr. Satan type in the series.
2. Coco...well, he's alright but somehow I get Piccolo vibes with him, mostly with how his power activates when his turban comes off.
3. I wonder if it was a GT Robot or one of those "bird men" who appeared in the cave near the end of that arc.
4. I'm still a tad confused on some concepts like Gourmet Cells but something tells me it will be explained down the line.
5. Rin is weird: acting all manly at one point yet girlish with Toriko around. Do like her though...and that Sunny is the "opposite" being a girlish man is interesting.
Last chapter I read was Sunny's introduction, when I get time I'll start the hunt for the Regal mammoth.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!
Also coverpage of 141 is really….. Gay.
But
that's the best part~!
My rankings.
Fighting amongst each other:
Zebura > All He can attack at range which keeps him at a safe distance from Sani's feelers. His attacks may overwhelm Toriko, and his voice can possibly blow away Coco's poison cloud. (coco can do that right? been a while since I read the regal mammoth arc)
Toriko < CoCo If Coco can produce a poison cloud, Toriko would have to take him out before then. Can stay out of range of Coco's poison, and take if on withr ange attacks, and use fork shield if needed, it will be difficult though. It may turn into a battle of endurance. The amount of blood Coco has vs Toriko's calories.
Coco < Sani Sani uses his hair for both attacks and defense. I don't know how Sani will feel about getting poison in his hair, so I'm going with Coco.
Sani < Toriko His hair can protect against Toriko's cutting attacks, and if Toriko gets in range for nail punch, he will be caught in Sani's feelers.
Coco has got to be my favorite of the 4 kings. The way he rides his crow reminds me of Deidara from Naruto. His other attributes are even with the rest of the 4 kings, they are all so different it's pure speculation to categorize them.
What we know for sure is the Kilo-calorie cost of Toriko's and Zebra's moves (not including 17 ren/sound meteor) and the fact that Zebra and Coco can sense death approaching and Sani/Toriko can not. Zebra holds the title of strongest in the 4 kings but strength is not everything.
Anybody want to explain fork shield to me? Flying fork? I understand that Flying knife is similar to flying sword tech. from one piece but flying fork actually creates a metal fork, wtf?
It's called imagery.
It's only there for our convenience and to look cool.
Even without metaphorical metal, prolonged Shield is still a mystery. I understand an immediate deflection, but that part in Heavy Hole really made me lost. I don't believe he can just leave the..whatever he is throwing around him for beast to bite upon while he is like "ha-ha, in the house b****es !".

I dunno I do find Coco a little bit on the bland side.
Honestly, I probably like Zebra the best, but not as much as Yosaku.
All 4 of the Heavenly Kings + Komatsu should go to the Gourmet World together. That way Komatsu can keep his promise to Zebra and still be with Toriko at the same time. Though Sunny & Coco don't seem fond of Zebra. Ichiryu said none of them were quite ready to enter the Gourmet World on their own, but as a group I think they'll survive.
Finally caught up on this manga.
And I sure am glad I am!
It's got a sense of wonder and adventure missing from a lot of manga these days.
Totally a fan.

Manservice, I say.
I'm curious, how many volumes are out in Japan right now?
Its something I've been wondering since I picked up the first and second volumes.
I'm all caught up with the manga now! It's a great manga with a good sense of detail… (except for certain techniques like Fork shield and most of Zebura's attack)
Speaking of Zebura, now I know why he hang out with Franky instead of Zoro in the crossover! lol, When I saw his face, I was totally sure he will be hanging out with someone like Zoro, drinking booze and be total badass... Never thought he couldn't handle alcohol! That itself makes him different from badasses of other mangas!
EDIT:
Komatsu sure look lively for someone whose been stab...
He wasn't stabbed, and he had plenty of time to recover.

Damn…
Well at least the glacial pace that it's released at will always give me something to look forward to.
