I'm being reminded of the scene in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me where Austin finds out that Felicity Shagwell slept with Fat Bastard.
Chapter 392 "Dereshi" Discussion
-
-
It's not just Luffy, Ace is normal height too. They might have giant lineage, but it's likely very far down the line.
Well, if they're related to Sauro, then they're probably only about a quarter giant or less. He's probably only half-giant himself, that or a smaller breed of giant as he's not part of the Erbaf crowd.
Still, I wouldn't be surprised if they're due for a growth spurt when they get older to Teach size. If they're part-giant, then their lifespan is probably longer than the average human and they probably won't stop growing until later in their lifespan than normal people as a result.
-

Um, he says that he's a full giant and even mentions that "not all giants are from that place."
-
the destruction of the 5000-year tree of knowledge together with the oharas… kinds of reminds me of the real world=( (eg the loss of many artefacts from the iraq musuem during the recent iraq-us war)
-
I remember during the Davy Back Fight, Nami says it was her fist time seeing a giant and Robin says the fish giant was smaller than a pure giant ^^ no wonder she knew so much…
I wonder if that's Ao Kiji walking on water. He did say he failed to capture her so maybe he was at the scene when the Buster Call happened. And the ship behind him is a marine ship.
[Edit: ] Maybe it IS Aokiji. Maybe he was ordered to capture Sauro and at some point ended up freezing Sauro. Maybe that's how Robin learned of his ability. [end of edit]
That one CP9 guy almost has the same eyebrows as Lucci. XD The other one looks like Kalifa. Must be the glasses. lol
Also Robin says she has mom, but what about her dad? I wonder who her father is and if he'll be mentioned later on? Robin's mom's teh hotness~ Like Robin with light hair. Gorgeous!
-
I forget the title, I once read a book that was similar to that. It might actually have been "Fatherland", come to think of it. Was the female protagonist an American reporter?
I remember in that one the Holocaust was the kind of thing that people kind of knew about but never consciously acknowledged. People talked about Jews "going east" and someone eventually points out that it's always said in a "wink, wink" sort of fashion.
Yep, that´s it. The one with the female American reporter. And that wink, wink fashion was only a priviliged minority that knew about. The common civilists inside Germany didn´t know about it leave alone the outside world.
-
I remember during the Davy Back Fight, Nami says it was her fist time seeing a giant and Robin says the fish giant was smaller than a pure giant ^^ no wonder she knew so much…
Nami had seen Broggy and Dorry in Little Garden before, remember? She was just saying that she never saw a fish-giant before.
–--
I was just thinking about Aokiji and Robin. Aokiji seems like a honored guy who believes in justice, and yet he despises Robin the most and really consider her a devil woman. Why? Does he fear her because she can read the Poneglyph, or does he really believe she is a devil? Will we see the reason for that in the flashback? Maybe Robin's actions in the past will really be reason for the Buster Call and the death of Sauro. Or maybe all the CP9's actions will make Robin seem guilty of something terrible in the eyes of everyone?
Or maybe Aokiji is the true devil and is just playing nice so that the Strawhats would believe him and let Robin in his hands...
-
I think the CP9 is after the Archeologists of Ohara. Based on information they got from Olvia's interrogation/torture, or maybe even blackmail (theyr favorite card). Could be that they tell Olvia that they plan on destroying Ohara because they know theyr doing illegal activities, but if she confessed about all she knows, then maybe they spare her and her daughter to re-unite them again, which obviously they dont plan on doing.
Aokiji on the other hand, having a good heart and all, decides to take it upon himself to save Robin from Ohara's inevitable destruction by taking her in.
Sauro doesnt like the sound of that and fights him or whatever….And RObin asking Luffy "Why is it that you fight? All of you who carry the name of 'D' " just hit me.
Sauro must have fought really hard for her (like how Luffy did for Vivi) despite claiming to be peacefull.
I just love how Oda ties things together. Pure fucking genious!!!.
That man deserves an award (if he hasnt won any yet) -
I got a small theory on Robins mother.
When Robin was asking questions about the void in history and her persistance into the subject they said she was just like her mother.
If Robins mom was on Gold Rogers ship then that could explain how he was able to read the true history. Im not sure if the timing would prove this part but maybe when they said that thing about captured, maybe they were talking about Gold Rogers crew.
This could also be Robins fate to follow in her mothers footsteps and join a pirate ship to, and it could also join together Luffy and Roger a little bit more. But all that is just guessing.
-
It is odd that they showed Robin's mom and not her dad though don't you think? Could Gold Roger really be her dad? I can remember some people long ago calling her Nico D. Robin.
I wonder where this giant is from if he's not from Elbaf.
-
Maybe her dad was just a deadbeat.
Well any giant lineage on luffy's side of the family would explain his apetite… either that or because of his fruit his stomache never gets full, but ace also has a similar apetite so maybe. Either way we will find out in luffy's final flashback as it only seems fitting that somewhere down the line we find out more about luffy's family tree from possibly luffy himself or someone close to him.
Seeing as I'm a quarter guy myself, I can see traits from only one grandparent not showing up. I'm fine with Luffy being descended from giants, but I hope it doesn't take away from his character. I'll be really annoyed if his strength is owed to some crappy bloodline.
And yes, a giant mating with a woman could kinda work. I don't really wanna explain it, so just take my word. XD
-
maybe lafitte is robin's dad , he is from west blue too where he was pretty famous and they got the same nose too.
By the way i m pretty sure that spandain is spandam's brother or father that would explain why he became the head of cp9 .
That was the most interesting flashback chapter i ve ever read !<3
-

If thought about that hypothesis too, but on second terms I think it would be too absurd to be real.
Nico D. Robin? Where have you heard/read that? -
I have a feeling that Sauro is talking about Whitebeard, if you think about it Sauro is a giant type person and so is Whitebeard in a sense, as he is way biger then all the rest of his crew, maybe they were on the same ship headed for Raftel.
I think whatever happened with Sauro envolved the crew that Shanks and Buggy were on together. Buggy seems to have met Whitebeard before, with the statement "When I first entered the Grandline, I met him head on" and he also says "he hates when one of his freinds gets hurt".
So possibly Buggy and Shank's crew met with the Whitebeard pirates at the start of the Grandline, Sauro got hurt during a battle with the B/S crew and then Whitebeard got uber pissed. Sauro managed to survive and ended up in West Blue.
Just a theory, which is kinda flawed by the fact that you can't just float into West Blue because of the reverse mountain and Redline being in the way but o well.
-
I'll be really annoyed if his strength is owed to some crappy bloodline.
Well, why really? It seems like a pure genius idea to explain his super human strength.
-
First: Freaking Sweet!
After reading this chapter and the posts ive been thinkng and have a few points
-
Sauro can be related to luffy quite easily, it just doesnt have to be in an obvious way, if you think about D. could be like a last name. For example, here in the UK, Wilson (My name :D) is a comman surname and lots of people share it, and altough lots of them wont have met each other, they will be in some distant way related. So it could turn out that Sauro is luffys 35th cousin 3 times removed. Of course, when factoring what Aokji said, it could be very likely that Sauro is Luffy Grandad.
-
Some thing that was aid about blackbeard got me thinking as well. If, in later life, those with giant blood get bigger or they just grow to a bigger osze in genral because of it, the perhaps white beard is in some way related to giants. And im guessing that hummans and giants dont hook up so much, meaning he could be a relation of blackbeards, lufys, aces, etc. After all he could have a simler thing as Gol D Rodger, Edwar D. Newgate? Would explain why whitebeards so hard and could foreshaddow sibbling rivalry sota thing as with ace and Luffy
And here my slighter stupider but still plauseable ldeas (No the prevoius were just farfected):
-
Working on the assumtion that point 2 is right, White beard is accualy Luffys granddad, so we still have the link between Roder and Luffy (Great uncle). THis one came after many people pointed out the simmilates between rodgar and luffy in terms of appernace. Remeber we havent seen whitebeard as a young man yet.
-
Again working on the the orginal points: White bread is accualy Sauro son. This only works if Old white beard is a D. as well. Would explain size and (if point 3 is right) Luffys D.
Take the last 2 as crazy ramblings if you will :D Dunno why im in such a white beard mood today
-
-
If Whitebeard is a D it kinda helps the theory I posted about 4 pages ago.
Mainly because that the Ds are all decendants of a race of people who fought an evil form of the World government 800 years ago, during the blank history and the Ds alive now are unknowingly heading to Raftel to start a revolution.
Gold Roger was one of the only people alive today (outside the WG), except possibly Dragon that knows of what happened 800 years ago. What he left behind at Raftel was the information of this blank history, possibly this history was left at Raftel by the WG because they thought no-one would be able to reach it.
He then decides to hand himself over so it will start a new pirate race to Raftel, which will see all the Ds head to this information. When the Ds realise this information they will be able to learn the truth of the World Government and start a new world revolution that Dragon talks about. -
Well, why really? It seems like a pure genius idea to explain his super human strength.
Because EVERY SINGLE OTHER SHONEN MAIN CHARACTER HIS THIS SAME SOURCE OF STRENGTH. It's a really annoying plot device that I'm sick of seeing. Naruto is only strong because he has the Kyuubi sealed inside of him, Ichigo is the son of an incredibly powerful Shinigami and (from what can be inferred) a spiritually powerful mother, Yusuke is strong because it turns out he's the descendant of the DEMON KING or some bullcrap (out of everything here, this has annoyed me the most. I liked YYH because it was about a normal street punk being picked up and fighting ghosts and demons. When I found out he was only strong because of his lineage, well… I lost respect for him), and Goku was really a super alien man from outer space. What's wrong with saying that Luffy is strong because he's worked hard? It's a lot more respectable than it just being given to him.
-
While I agree with Cap'n Carter for the most part, I still feel inclined to mention Goku actually came from a line of exceptionally weak warriors and by chance wrestled up to become the strongest of them all.
I think what actually rubs Carter the wrong way is plot devices that give the main characters some kind of superpower and that sort of thing. And if that's the case, then honestly Luffy already has that as well: The Devil Fruit.
Hence, there's really no need for another one. And besides, from what we've seen, Luffy can whipe the floor with giants… Hell, even minor characters can. I don't really think him being descended from one would explain a single thing.
-
I agree. The "D" family may have special people, but what makes Luffy so cool is the fact that he trained to become what he is now. He trained ten years just to chase his dream. That's cool.
I hate Saiyajins and everythuing like that, where the main character is ubber because he was born that way. Sometimes this is interesting, but I am tired of this.
-

Well, yes, Goku did work his ass off to be the strongest. But I still thought it was kind of silly when they decided to make him an alien..
And I didn't think of the Devil Fruits. Well, they're kind of a norm in the series. But yeah, I see your point. What I was mostly trying to say was that I get annoyed when the main character is strong just because he's born that way.
-

I completely agree. I used to like Naruto - for about two volumes. I meet Haku, see the things he does, think he's the man, and when it turns out that it's all just hereditary, I throw the book across the room and never read it again. It's fine when it's a complete jackass that gets such a power - so long as they get their butt handed to them, because then you feel like they deserve it. That's why I've never been able to stand Superman, but I love Batman - he works hard for everything and just uses his wits and physical strength to get the job done. That's why it would totally piss me off if Luffy was the relative to a giant, because take that lineage away and he's probably weaker than Sanji (don't get me wrong, Sanji's crazy strong and probably my favorite Mugiwara, but compared to Luffy?)
-
@Mog:

The devil fruit was not introduced as a way for Luffy to overcome some nasty villain. Instead, Luffy ate it as a child and part of his strength with it comes due to training hard to learn and expand his abilities.
Most powerup in shonen involve:
a) A Ubber villain that can't be defeated with normal ways.
b) The hero either can't defeat the villain or is defeated once by the villain
c) The hero either gets his powerup out of nowhere, or some secondary character that appeared in the saga just for that trains/tells the hero how to get it.
d) Said powerup was totally unknown in the previous arc. It only appears because the new villain appeared. The event in One Piece most similar to this pattern was Zoro's ability to cut stell. And yet it came out of nowhere, because he faced several situations before his fight with Mr. 1 where he would need such power to escape (Mr. 3's candle thing and Crododile's cage) thus breaking requirement d.
Well, yes, Goku did work his ass off to be the strongest. But I still thought it was kind of silly when they decided to make him an alien..
The problem to me wasn't he being a weak Saiyajin, but the fact that, because he was a Saiyajin, he could become Super Saiyajin (1, 2, 3…) and suddenly become ubber and above other characters.
(As a side note, I hate Goku. Piccolo was the coolest character in DBZ and I watched it just to see Piccolo do cool [abd intelligent] things)
EDIT: And that is also why I like Usopp and want to see him kick Kaku's ass.

i'm sorry if this was posted before and i failed to catch it:
in the shadow on coast pane (some say Kiji) what's the meaning of the sound effects? They are like waves SCHUA_SCHUA or frozen CRICK_CRICK?i think it's the first, Oda wouldn't giveaway something that easy he needs to make his readers go crazy speculating. also i agree with a point above saying Luffy is NOT related to giants. At least i hope so, and teach can be related to giants.
*** poor boncury ***
-
I compared the SFX to when Aokiji was freezing stuff (I feel like such a dork for doing so) and it's totally different.

now you mention that, i quite like the idea that Teach could be the person referred to by the D Giant.
-

Good call. Now we know it could be anybody, not just Kiji.
And I also second (or third, or whatever) what you said on the Power up subject, except on the matter of devil fruits. I don't see them as much as a "power-up" as alterations you have to get used to, and train
And Luffy pushing two buildings apart had nothing to do with his Gomu Gomu powers either. -
Daz, Thats an Avatar i can love!
On the subject of DBZ, it was all good till the end of the freezia arc. It did get stupid with 2nd and 3nd forms of SS.
I dunno about this Revoltion threoy of yours Bad-Beat, could be, but it doesnt rub me the right way.
At the very least i think the D. family will all have a comman link some where in ther past, and that the giants are simpley one side of a faimly tree. In bad pictoral terms:
Now in that dotted box, extra people will have married in and perhaps evolution or natural mutation took its course, so its perfectly resonable that some watered down giant blood is in luffy. So there (Now im confused )
-
What I'm wondering is what exactly happened during the void of history. As someone else said, what happened during this time?
I see a clear parallel between World War II and the Cold War in this arc. Spandam, like President Truman, had control of powerful weapons, but were not fully aware of the reprecussions it might have on people–both guilty and innocent. Similarily, the World Government, much like USSR in the years following World War II until the fall of the Berlin Wall, is trying to keep information secret from the people. The USSR's inability to admit their mistakes and show weakness led to a great deal of nuclear accident coverups, which eventually led to the very well-known Chernobyl incident.
Science fiction and fantasy are able to take the reader out of reality and make them look at ideas from a different light; Oda is doing the same thing. And at the moment, I think he's asking us, "Is it right to use a weapon for the sake of the people without knowing its reprecussions?" and "Is it right to keep information secret in order to keep the people safe when it might hurt the people?"
I think Oda's answer to both, as of right now, is no.
-
What I'm most interested about during that century is if…
A. Shandia's fall will be explained
and then vicariously
B. We'll see why Shandians on the ground had wings as well as people in the sky.
If he explains that...I will simply lose control of all bodily functions.
-
Shandora fell because Norland brought smallpox over.
-
Looking at it now…
The SFX in the panel where the figure is walking away from the Marine ship is "zabu", the sound effect for a big splash. The SFX next to the walking figure is "basha", which is the sound for rustling, presumably of the coat.
-
i think shandia fell because the gigantic bell made everyone deaf and as a result they couldn't hear the STOP! screams when they were riding those nice pet mamoths and started trampling everybody. Untill they all died.

ok, someone posted in another forum a theory about the D being a clan that was created after the Blank History with the concept of "freeing" the world and it they have no genetic meaning and are instead the sons/grandsons/whatever of the original clan that spread across the world. Very very nice idea! -

That was me, in this thread…=)

the general feeling i get is that the void in history is due to the wepons and so the only records of it left are the poneglyphs. now i think that the WG found out about this so it then it decided to put a ban on the research of the poneglyphs to avoid a repeat of whatever happned in the void years. however since the age of pirates came about and the WG is losing it grip on things it then decided that the course of action to take is to revive these weapons to put an end to the pirate age, underr their own waped view of jusstice
-
@omae:

I always thought that they did it because they were inspired by the shadows in the sky. After all, Skypiea was floating around over Jaya even back then so it isn´t impossible.

And yes, a giant mating with a woman could kinda work. I don't really wanna explain it, so just take my word. XD
Yeah, the mating part I can see, it's the CHILDBIRTH that concerns me. XD

Giant mating is impossible.
Human Male to Giant Female: she couldn't feel it, he'd have to climb inside and do dragon punches at her g-spot for her body to even know he was there and then the sperm thing, i'd get lost, it'd be treated like air and i'm pretty sure i'd be too small to fertilise an egg.
Giant Male to Human Female: he'd split her in two and let's not even go into if he was kinky. and if he tried to give her a facial he'd break her neck under the weight of his semen along and i'm pretty sure that even on a bad day she'd drown in it. and to get it into her i'm pretty sure she'd have to have something akin to a cesarian section.
Impossible.
-
I forgot to mention I like how Sauro tried to scare Robin and see just looked at him funny
-
Haha, I could describe a number of ways either one would work, but it's really not necessary. XD Like I said, it's the childbirth for a normal human woman that is impossible. Unless there was a serrogate giant mother. But now that's just insanity.
-
Yeah, the mating part I can see, it's the CHILDBIRTH that concerns me. XD
True… hey, maybe Luffy's not the first D. to have eaten the Gum Gum Fruit.
-
True… hey, maybe Luffy's not the first D. to have eaten the Gum Gum Fruit.
I'm not sure if you were joking or not but just in case, I seem to recall somewhere Oda stating there's only one of each. I CAN'T confirm that though without flipping through random SBS.

Well, I suppose it depends how you take those wings. They didn't seem to be simply things added to their bodies. I have always considered them part of their bodies indicating a common ancestor and a rather advanced civilization…advanced enough to create massive war ships.
If that's the case, then it doesn't look like the Shandians we see were capable of any genetic engineering ^_~
-
True… hey, maybe Luffy's not the first D. to have eaten the Gum Gum Fruit.
Lol! You would have put that straight:laugh:
-

I was just joking.
Did anybody ever actually draw up a complete list of the various SBSes? Because I hear on a fairly regular basis that Oda said this or Oda said that, but rarely ever see the actual SBS.
I'm curious about this for instance, but I don't really feel like checking each and every one of them like I did for that "Oda said Crocodile was executed in a SBS" rumor that time.

The ban on Poneglyph research has been active since 800 years ago, according to Clover. I find it hard to believe that the government repressed all research…without ever using it for their own good. Well, they may have used the ancient weapons in the past (a not so distant past, since Tom seemed to know something about them), but from The Gorousei's words it looks like they were not used in a long time.
What I find most bewildering is that the Gorousei suddenly changed their mind about the weapons...apparently because Spandam proposed to. WTF? They had to wait for Spandam for such a decision? Plus they're all like "Yeah Spandam buddy, you go take care of that shiznit mmm'kay?"
I'm sure they knew Spandam's character. It would be an utter absurdity to allow such tools in the hands of a power-hungry madman such as him...there must be some catch here. Probably the Ancient Weapons cannot be activated just like that: It'll take some time, and the news of Pluton's construction would reach Gorousei ears, with them consequently sacking Spandam to take care personally of the whole deal...
Damn, I've written way too much...hope It made a little sense at least...

I have no doubt in my mind that the WG knows exactly what sort of person Spandam is. I'm willing to believe they are using him and his aspirations for their own benefit. Once he is no longer useful, he will likely be discarded.

At a guess, it's probably something that he and perhaps others had been pressuring them about for quite a while. When they authorized him to go after Pluton, they said straight out that their reasoning was based on the Navy's inability to stem the tide of Piracy despite having a decade to do so.
Since Roger launched his Golden Age of Piracy with his death, the normal methods were obviously not up to the task and more drastic steps had to be taken.
-
I agree with both of you, but the means for weapon researching have been there for 800 years. They've been far too tolerant till now, makes me think there's some huge drawback to Pluton & Co…
-

Which REALLY must have been a bitch since that statement regarding Arlong that floats around wasn't even from an SBS but an interview.
Somewhat said they were gonna do it a while ago but I suppose they dropped it.

why? it's very simple. the mother dies.
