Finished the game. Obviously amazing and first playthrough I found 71 out of 100 treasures. Gonna play through hard next and maybe try multiplayer.
Uncharted 3

They added some form of aim-assist (only in SP) that is non-reversible in the options menu. it's hard to describe and I may not have even noticed that much if I hadn't just played U2 last week to prepare. Basically whenever you L1 aim and pass the cursor within a certain range of an enemy, the reticule movement slows down significantly and adds some really weird acceleration effects that make it much harder to hone in on precise spots. It makes for really shitty effects like if an enemy is running at full speed across your range of vision you can't actually catch up to them because the reticule moves so slowly.
The weirdest thing is that although for the most part this shitty aiming is only in SP and not MP, according to some people one of the sniper rifles actually has that effect online and even more baffling, it WASN'T EVEN PRESENT IN THE MP BETA, so some genius at Naughty Dog must have added this shit at a late stage, because Uncharted 2 controlled absolutely fine and now it plays a lot shittier. Tweaking the sensitivity will help a little bit but it doesn't remove the change in response over enemy targets.
I noticed the aim assist but just figured it was normal because I haven't played Uncharted 2 in a while. Glad to hear that they're getting rid of it though because the aiming was kind of annoying.
Anyway I beat the game and twas glorious.
! Loved the final "run from the collapsing city" sequence, just like from the second one. I'm kind of glad that all the supernatural stuff in this one was hallucinations. They never did explain the spiders though. I was fucking horrified when Sully got shot as well. I'm glad that he ended up being okay.

Yeah…
! Though it thankfully turned out Sully was okay, Drake's hallucination planted enough doubt that I wasn't entirely positive he alive until the dust settled. I loved the sense of urgency it brought to the rest of the game! So good… SO good.

Made my way through the water and giant boat parts last night. That was the most fun I've had with a video game all year. All the rocking back and forth up and down and getting washed around. Which way is up? Loved it. And the game isn't over yet.

Finished it today. Found it to be nothing more than average gaming. The camera deciding it wanted to be dramatic ended up killing me more than anything else. But it was pretty fun aside with some major gripes. Mainly
! The retarded guards. Oh look! This building is on fire! Lets stand still and burn to death while we kill this guy instead! The fact that the boat and water areas seemed to be nothing but filler. And the tediousness of the whole desert trekking. That took 20 minutes and could have been 2. While it seems to be a running theme in the Uncharted games the bad guys just didn't seem to have substance and seemed nothing more than an Old Lady and what I assumed to be Crane from Batman. Even the final fight was nothing more than a regular fight scene as opposed to an actual threat in the last two games. And the punching combat itself seemed really boring and samey.
But maybe I'm just being too negative. I just finished Uncharted 2 again and coming off Batman recently this just pales in comparison. Felt like nothing more than 'same old same old. We wanna do a movie instead of a game.' to be honest.

…..Average gaming?! WTF!! I can't think of one other game that is as thrilling and gives such a cinematic experience as Uncharted 3 does. Seriously I can't name one. Wtf have you been smoking....average.....smh.

Naughy Dog is going to be releasing a single-player patch to change the aiming back to how it was in Uncharted 2, as well as add motion-blur.
Should be releasing a patch that makes auto-saving happen instantaneously.
! The fact that the boat and water areas seemed to be nothing but filler. And the tediousness of the whole desert trekking.
! The Desert Trekking was definitely filler or at least an idea they didn't really give to much thought too.
! Let's have Drake pick up a rifle from a dead guard and then have players spend the next 15 minutes or so walking through the desert before encountering enemies without a gun.! Even the final fight was nothing more than a regular fight scene as opposed to an actual threat in the last two games.
! Personally if I were rating the boss fight's in terms of quality the Lazarevic fight would be first, Talbot would be second, and the Navarro fight would be third.
Some of the things I didn't like about the game.
! - Every supporting character getting put on the bus like Sully did in the second game.
- The awkwardness of the melee combat.
- The technical lack of monstrous creatures.
- And the whole hallucination thing I didn't mind it in the early parts of the game and I was okay with how it fit in with the story but the last hallucination at the end of the game was hell on the eyes almost couldn't finish it because of it.
-
! yeah that whole thing with the picking up the gun and it disappearing later. Was a bit silly.
From what I've gathered they wrote the game around what the levels they wanted to do
! which explains things like the Water/Boat level and the Plane/Deset levels feeling so out of place in the game.
And I totally agree with that first point.
! Cutter was great, even if I felt he had a stamp on his head saying 'I'M GONNA DIE!' throughout all the time we saw him. Personally I'd be more than happy with they dropped Drake/Sully in the next game and instead went with Cutter/Chloe (was that her name? I forget. Either way both were great) And please. Please. PLEASE in the next game don't have the whole Drake/Blonde girl (wasn't interesting in all 3 games for me to remember her name) on again off again plot. Either have them together or don't bother with them at all.

I feel the game as a whole is simply a fun movie with fun characters. The major strengths of Uncharted have always been a likable cast and the graphics.
However the writing itself in this entry, just sort of… well, didn't really live up to the second's. Well.... parts at least.
! I feel the beginning of the game was quite well done and really set the stage for an interesting story. However, the main fault of the plot would simply have to be the very rushed final act.
! To elaborate, i'll just break things down with the characters themselves:
! -Cutter and Chloe: I really liked Cutter. He was quite likable.. and had a good amount of plot twists going for him. Yeah, he DID have "IM GONNA DIE" stamped on his bald head… but Naughty Dog was perhaps expecting us to think that way. I enjoyed how involved he was in everything, especially with the historical babble. Chloe was a shadow of her Among Thieves character... but it's not as if I was expecting that... she DID act according to the Chloe we knew. She just really wasn't that involved. I would have really liked to see these two carried to the end in some way. But then again, that would have required a bit more on the technical and writing side of things. Voice acting, Mo-cap, and programming characters into something as cinematic as Uncharted takes time and money.
! -Salim: Well.... what's there to say really? Salim as a character embodies how rushed the final chapters were. Sure he gave us a really cool horse combat scene (that was really fucking cool), but he was shoe horned in. He saved Drake and warned of doom. He was the Tenzin of the game, but spoke.
! -Marlowe and Talbot: Ah yes.... the villains. This was probably the biggest let down of the game for me. In the end, they were just... baddies. Many of the plotholes of the game sort of revolve around these two. For one thing, I felt, given the hallucination drugs, the mysteriousness, and how the game made note to focus on Cutter shooting him and his speedy return... well.. that Talbot was something more than he seemed. Some kind of... I dunno... assassin or sorcerer or warlock or something? In fact... the implications of Marlowe and whatever secret ancient society she was in just sorta dropped out of the plot. I had thought.... well maybe there's more to her too? Like, since it was her voice in Drake's head when he was losing his mind in the desert, that well.... once again, she was something MORE than what she was. Hell, the droves of mindless suited guards could have been played into some kind of puppets or something... people under the control of this ancient bitch and her powerful, dark servant. I know i'm sorta grasping at straws... but you can't tell me that you didn't at least at one point think "So what the hell is Talbot's deal anyway?" But in the end, she was just a greedy bitch and Talbot was well.... I dunno... her son? Seriously... when she drowned in sand, and he went "NOOOOOO" I kinda scratched my head. Up to this point we, as an audience, have been led to believe his character was a sneaky, conniving, schemer. So why mourn Marlowe's death? Sure, I know their plan went to shit... and that's like.... his boss and benefactor. But I'm sure this guy has connections or something? Why not just cut your losses and GET THE FUCK OUT OF A CRUMBLING CITY? Nah Nah... instead he goes for straight up REVENGE and throws his life at Drake. It's one thing with the droves of baddies in falling planes and burning buildings.... but this was one of the main players of the game! I thought one of the best scene's in the game was when Marlowe confronted and captured Drake, and attempted to play mind games with him. I mean, why do that when she was about to hand him over to a pirate to be killed? Her connections to Sully in the past (and Drake as well) could have been played a bit stronger, especially in the finale. Once again, the bad guys were nothing more than well... badguys. And that was sort of boring.
! -Sully: Love him! Like Drake, such a likable character. And their interactions in this title were the driving force behind the entire adventure (for me). I mean, when Elena said "He'd go to the ends of the earth for you", It was honestly touching. And his fake death really really really hit me hard... Sub-par story building aside, the interactions between Sully and Drake in every one of these games really feels natural and casual. It feels real. Like these guys have REALLY known each other for quite a while. However, as much as I loved the relationship building in this one... I gotta say, they could have pushed it more. I thought nearly the ENTIRE game, that Sully was still in some way working as Marlowe's ace in the hole. And that during the finale, would be forced to choose between a job he'd been working for years and his best friend and well... the closest thing to a son. And of course we'd know that Sully would have chosen Drake (duh), but a bit of writing could have had us on the edges of our seats for a moment. It would have been perfect to have Sully, in a way, deceiving Drake all theses years.... which brings me to my next point...
! Why is this game called "Drake's Deception"?
! Really... anyone?
! There's really no moment in the game where Drake deceives or is deceived. (well not big enough to warrant the title of the game). And I sorta scratched my head on that one...
The first and second game's titles made perfect sense... but this one.... well... I dunno. Maybe in the beginning when Drake, Sully, and Cutter fooled Marlowe with the fake death?
! Nah... not big enough.
! Oh well. Still a good game.
! OH! right... -Elena and Drake: Well, not much to say really. Other than they have good chemistry as well. Yeah the whole ring thing was... eh... but Elena is likable enough to have me forgive that. Now if the next game has them apart AGAIN, we'll have a problem. And as for Drake himself... well... would have liked to know his real name.... and maybe even have the story give us a moment of weakness in him where someone asks "What is your obsession with Francis Drake?" But then again, it's not a big thing.
! The game was enjoyable from beginning to end and the characters rule. Not enough mystical city or ancient monsters for my taste (no mummies), but whatever. There was no parts of the game I particularly hated. -
This game was called "Drake's Deception" because
! Drake deceived the Queen into thinking that he never found the city, fearing the evil that resided within and what a person would do with it.
-
Oh shit! Damn, never really thought about it like that!
Well, ok then.
I actually kinda like that! Makes me a bit happier with things.
! Liken it up to me being to focused on the here and now of the plot. But it makes perfect sense. I forgot to mention that I really liked the backstory with F. Drake in this one and how they tied it in with T. E. Lawrence.
Hmmm… and on a side note, Multiplayer definitely takes a bit of getting used to. There is a slight learning curve and some high level assholes who stomp you at every turn.
I almost wanna beat the game on Crushing difficulty to train for it. But I am getting better and finish most of my matches with a positive kill/death ratio.
-
With Marlowe
! I honestly thought it was going to be revealed that she was Talbot's puppet. What with his mind games and the way he whispered in her ear in every other scene with the two. Especially after the scenes with Cutter.

glad to hear cause didn't Syria have loading problems. also that motion-blur what for?

What Cyber-Robin said. Packed it up and sold it back the moment I plantinumed it.
Trailers ruined the entire game. That is, what wasn't ruined by an entire 1/4 of the game being devoted to a giant troll-'Sorry, the Princess is in another castle!'-routine that makes the game borderline obnoxious to replay. Was good, but 2 is the bar.

Pretty much this. I hope whoever decided on this got what was coming to him.

I agree. I mean despite how pointless it was my fave level was escaping the ship. However I'd already seen the playthrough of it from e3. The Desert bit was on the cover. Taunting. Making you think that it was going to be a decent area of the game.
Personally I think the game is pretty good until the half-way point and a bus comes and snatches away two of the supporting cast. After that it's just a series of cheap thrills which we'd already seen in trailers and then the ending. (Which was kinda forgettable anyways.)
-
just finished the boat segment last night. I fucking love it. as far as uncharted goes, i've always seen it as pretty cancerous since it's super casual, quick time events, shit writing, holds your hand through linear as hell gameplay, but it's so goddamn hard for me to be objective towards it because it's just so goddamn beautiful. uncharted 3 fixed the eyeball thing, so it's pretty much the most graphically impressive game i've ever played. stylized, fluid animations, insane camera work; jesus christ it's a masterpiece. and that burning building collapsing? good god.
i've actually heard the boat sequence be called non sequitur, and it's actually true that naughty dog designs the set pieces first, and then the story later as a framing device to get to those set pieces. i really do feel kind of bad applauding that kind of story design but like… the set pieces are just so goddamn good. i can't hate it. why can't i hate it? /sob
-
Because it's fun.
Simple as that. The characters are funny and likable and the story doesn't ask much out of you.
Would I like Naughty Dog to get it's shit together and give us a really engaging storyline? sure, but in the meantime, I don't mind having a gorgeous, casual, adventure with some cool peeps.
-
it is indeed fun (in a kind of cheap summer blockbuster kind of way). yeah i just finished it. had a really good time.
BUT can someone explain to me the significance of
! the ring that sully gave nate at the end? i didn't play the first one so if it's an allusion to something that happened then i wouldn't know. or if it was mentioned earlier in the game that i guess i just wasn't paying attention.
-
! I think it's an engagement/wedding ring that Nate had with Elena between the 2nd and 3rd game. He thought he lost it when they were seperated (?).
-
That's what I figured too, but I'm not sure if it was ever explicitly said or what.
-
! I think it was more implied since Elena looked happy seeing Nathan wearing it again. Maybe just a simple exposition to why they werent together at the beginning of the game, without even explaining it.
-
That's what I figured too, but I'm not sure if it was ever explicitly said or what.
Probably in some supplementary material or something other somewhere.
-
Beat it.
Disappointment, thy name is Uncharted 3.
