Does the animation get better as the series progresses?
Also where in the show does movie 8 take place cuz I bought the movie too.
Just quit already. You're wasting everyone's fucking time, including your own.
Dude. Just don't reply. There's no need to be so hostile.
Leave the kid alone guys.
Lil Kis, don't worry about filler episodes. You won't encounter much in the way of that with what you've ordered. Just enjoy the show when you get it. If you don't want any spoilers for the series (or yelling) you may want to avoid sections of this forum for awhile.
One Piece is serious business here, obviously.
Just curious, was this a blind buy for you or did you hear good things somewhere and decide to try it out?
Also, Movie 8 is a recap/retelling of the Alabasta arc. Which takes place during "season 2" of Funimations sets.
Thanks. I heard good things about it so I bought it. I also like watching long series that don't end so that's why I bought it too. I usually only get anime shows that are 26 episodes long. This is my collection.
Berserk
Cowboy Bebop
Last Exile
Paranoia Agent
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Witch Hunter Robin
Fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood
Boogiepop Phantom
Corpse Princess
Holic
Mushi-Shi
The Count of Monte Cristo
Black Lagoon
Monster
Gunslinger Girls
Elfen Lied
Spice and Wolf
Hell Girl
Basilisk
Full Metal Panic, Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, Full Metal Panic 2nd Raid
etc. etc. etc.
so I buy a lot of anime. One Piece though will be the longets running show I will invest in.
currently my favorite shows are….
Monster, Cowboy Bebop, and Berserk
ps i the movie 8 of one piece a retelling of the show's arc then why make it ino a movie if it already has been seen before. Did I waste my money? is there anything new in the movie that ain't in the show?
The animation varies from good to abysmal.
Oh, I love Brotherhood. I think Hell Girl is pretty stupid though. That's just me.
Anyway, I can't wait until Funi reaches Water 7. So much annoying filler is in the way. If that doesn't bother you than the anime is the best choice.
… Now we are the ones asking questions? Cool!!
Okay ummm.... what do you like about Berserk? And should I be seeing that?
Holy fuck yes you should. Go read it now.
Dude. Just don't reply. There's no need to be so hostile.
You make it sound very very simple.
And this is nowhere near hostile. It can get waaaaaaay more out of hand.
yeah Berserk is a great anime. It ends with no ending though. The show grabs you in by the story and characters though. It's a really dark and depressing anime.
but anyways I'm more worried about what I just read here…
http://www.animenfo.com/review.php?id=731&n=cdbxop&t=one_piece&type=anime
People are saying how terrible One piece is in their reviews.
The anime ends at the climax of the show. If you would read the manga the story continues. The anime ends at roughly volume 14 and there are over 30 volumes now.
Edit: Don't listen to people's reviews. If you haven't noticed it already, people are full of shit.
Shhhhhh.
sniff sniff
You smell that?
sniff sniff
It smells like bullshit.
Gee don't like my opinion, guess what its an opinion. Do you even read or watch Bleach now to know if its getting better?
Now you got me all excited Kairo… and its 5 AM here. Damn you :I

I hear the anime is terrible so I will be reading the Manga instead. But thanks for the response.
I think the anime is good. It's made to be self-contained, though. So multiple characters are cut out for this reason. And it ends prematurely. I think that a new anime in in development, though.
And I love the opening.

And it can get more out of hand. This is still hostile though. Chill out until something bad actually does happen or whatever it is you're expecting to go down.
So very very mean people are.

Okay then, I will just watch the anime after reading it first. Thanks.
What's Berserk about anyway?
A mercenery group called the Band of the Hawk is hired by kingdoms to protect them. One day the leader of the mercenary group finds an item called the Egg of the King, a special behelit*. Due to how good the mercenary group is, the leader, named Griffith, is awarded a high post in one of the kingdoms whose name escapes me at the moment. He does something (I'm not going to spoil you) and screws up, and is punished for it. He's rescued by his friends but soon after being rescued, he activates the Egg of the King and all hell literally breaks loose.
*Here's an explanation of a behelit:
The Behelit is actually a key used by mankind to summon the God Hand, a group of immensely powerful, god-like demons, themselves the servants of a dark God that governs the Berserk universe. A Behelit is not truly found or kept by someone, rather it finds its way to the one fated to possess it through the manipulation of causality, and tempts the person with the opportunity to be free of their pitiful situation and have their innermost desire realized.
So very very mean people are.
Welcome to the Internet bitch!
I shall now make my escape! WOOSH!
Berserk is a great show!!!
So read the manga and continue the story.
I have One piece to look foward to now. I heard Berserk's manga is better than One piece's manga
I'd say they're pretty similar quality. They're two different genres though so they're kind of hard to compare.
Shhhhhh.
sniff sniff
You smell that?

Why the hell would you shush people so you could smell something?

Well when does it come out cuz I will be buying it.
@Lil:

Wow im really getting sick of your comments. No one is forcing you to buy the anime watch the first few in onepieceoffical.com first to get the feel for it but don't hold us accountable for your decisions bro.
Are you completely freaking oblivious to google's existence? Please please please stop making pointless threads. Learn to use the internet.

The kind of people that don't seem to understand that there are people who have different opinions from there own

He's not. That post sounded more sarcastic then angry.
What's with all the hate anyway? So many people are against this guy. Is there some new rule on here I'm missing?
@Lil:

no one will dispute that one piece is expensive. but considering that you CAN find manga scans, if not full volumes, online as well as streaming episodes dubbed and subtitled by FUNimation itself, all FOR FREE, money shouldn't be a determining factor in getting into a series. Besides, its definitely worth every penny. Also, there have been many long stories outside the field of manga that last for years and therefore are expensive to purchase the entirety of. That just goes with it being a long story.
By the way, in case you were wondering about the frequent attacks made by members of this forum, we were all rather surprised that you didn't just do your research BEFORE not only watching or reading one piece but actually joining this community. It takes people aback when you say things like 'i dont read manga because i dont care for it being black and white' or however you put it. The way you've gone about this thread and the other you've posted just are in a very uncommon method. I just think you ought to know that that is the reason behind all the rather obnoxious comments made by people here. They'd rather scoff at your lack of knowledge than offer a helping hand to a newb. Sorry for that.
cuz i think you should calm down.
I'm just asking questions about this show no need to become a hater
*How good is this show overall from 1 being worst and 10 being best and why.
9.5. The only reason its not a 10 is because of the pacing of the anime past episode 207.
*how good is the art and animation on this show.
Great, gets a bit better over time, although expect cheap animation strategies to be used when the episode numbers get higher.
*How good is the character development in this show.
Fantastic. Among the best you'll ever find.
*how good are the characters in this show.
Very good. They look good, have well-developed and fitting personalities, and there are a TON of them. All are interesting and all are unique.
*How unique are the villians in this show.
Well, they all have their goals and powers…most of them are selfish but a few have backstories explaining how they got to that point.
*how good is the music in this show?
From openings to endings to background music, its fan-freaking-tastic.
*what do you consider the best episode of One Piece and why?
Probably 45- it takes place toward the end of the first big saga and offers a nice little look back (through locations and side characters and a new development for Luffy, the main character) on what has happened in the story in a unique style.
*Is this show better than Berserk and Cowboy Bebop?
Have not seen either, I'm afraid, but I'll still say yes.

i won't say i think lil kiss here was using his head all the way, but this is definitely not the first time members here are completely inhospitable to new members. Rude, and certainly not helpful. Don't be surprised to find it…
ok of all the people on here, who bought all the funimation dvds of One Piece besides me which I will do eventually…
@Lil:

i think there is a thread about that somewhere…....I have season one voyages one-four and in my opinion that's the best part of one piece, both in the manga and anime. of course, VERY FEW others, including people on here, will agree with me on that.

Yes, I'm aware of your stance on this matter. Your post did a fantastic job of making it clear. I'm not surprised, just confused. Been browsing this place for 3 years and still don't know why people instantly resort to hate.
Anyway, him buying the DVDs is a good thing. We want those DVDs to sell don't we?

Forget? Never have, never will.
I've purchased all the DVD sets, Movie 8 DVD, Movie 8 Blu-Ray, and Unlimited Adventure.
If I can't put my money where my mouth is, I have no right to complain if Funi drops One Piece at some point.
*How good is this show overall from 1 being worst and 10 being best and why.
As far as shounen series go, it's the only one to ever hold my attention (for almost 500 episodes no less). It's silly and manages to not take itself too seriously, which is a big help in handling the more melodramatic moments, unlike its' angsty brethren.
*how good is the art and animation on this show.
I enjoy the sometimes grotesque yet quirky mix of western cartoon stylings with Asian aesthetics. The animation on the TV series varies (like previous people mentioned), but that's to be expected with a long-running animated show on a budget. It still manages to be pretty impressive at times.
*How good is the character development in this show.
The thing that makes the show so endearing is the little things Oda does to really flesh out the Strawhat crew as a familial unit. These characters aren't the most complex in the world, and they don't have labyrinthine backstories full of a bunch of contrived dramatic threads that take tons of time to go through. They have their baggage, you learn them, and you see how it shapes them as people and as friends. You see how they meet and bond, and why they would risk their lives for each other. Don't expect anything Shakespearian, but Oda gives it to the viewer where it counts emotionally, and it works bigtime.
*how good are the characters in this show.
Like I said, they're what makes the story work.
*How unique are the villians in this show.
Most of them don't really get that complicated, and few of them are relatable in any way, but they manage to be both properly menacing yet not completely arch. As shounen villians go, they are definitely unique, and the way the crew has to go about dealing with them is usually very interesting and creative.
*how good is the music in this show?
The orchestrated pieces are very essential to me to the experience, but there are times where the show kind of delves into synth based situation comedy pieces that are kind of a detractor for me. It reminds me of every slice of life anime I've ever seen, and while not totally inappropriate for the scenes they are in, compared to the movie-like score of the more dramatic moments, it feels kind of beneath the show.
*what do you consider the best episode of One Piece and why?
For me, it would have to be a tie between the episode of the Arlong Park arc where Luffy talks with Nami as she breaks down about the Fishman scourge, begging him for help. The sense of family as the Straw Hats man up to go throw down in defense of one of their own was a powerful emotional moment, and the exact scene where I knew I was hooked.
The other one it was tied for was the scene in the Alabasta arc when Luffy finished his fight with Crocodile, accompanied by Dvorak's Symphony No 9: From the New World, IV Movement. The montage that ensued was both emotionally vindicating and moving in an artistic way, cutting to the chaos of the war outside, the exhausted crew trying to stop the fighting, and Luffy expending his energy to resolve the threat, all to the tune of the beautiful triumphant piece of Eastern European symphony. I still love that scene to death, and lament the lack of that piece of music being used in Movie 8.
*Is this show better than Berserk and Cowboy Bebop?
Comparing them is a fool's errand. Cowboy Bebop is probably my favorite television show (animated or live-action), and it would be incredibly hard to beat it. Berserk is a wonderful manga with a really flawed and abrupt anime adaption (which should hopefully be rectified with the new anime project). I would compare One Piece more with the Harry Potter series, in terms of telling a more long-term story for a younger audience, that grows and becomes a bit more dark/complex as it grows along with the viewer/reader. Granted, I think it does a much better job of sculpting a world and cast of characters than HP, but I think the analogy is still pretty fitting.
ok thanks. I never saw the Harry Potter films though lol.
are they good too?
I just don't want to get this entire show and then be dissappointed in it. I already ordered four voyage's….
I like more anime that deals with the characters. I like drama. I don't like light stuff. I like dark and brooding stuff like Berserk, Monster, and Cowboy bebop.
I checked amazon.com but all they say is 2011. I wanna know the month and day too.
Then you're in for a rude awakening, because while this show has dark moments/themes and serious storylines, it constantly tempers it with humor and a general zany sensibility. It is very upfront with the general tempo of the storytelling within the first batch of episodes, so I'm not sure how it will go over with you.
Like others have said, go watch the first handful of episodes and see if the characters/tone jive with you. If not, I would try to cancel that order immediately, as it would be a colossal waste.
@Lil:

Since you never heard of searching more than 1 site.
1/26/11
Right Stuf usually ships earlier. Check them before you ask us, if they don't have the date for a voyage, we probably won't know either. And be sure to use the funi-sub section also. We have it for a reason.
