while still being rated as a children's movie.
That shouldn't be hard considering how many villains have met a bloody end.

Are the thorns actually shoved INTO his eyes, or can he stumble upon them?
Hopefully Disney will have the balls to do it, rather than the witch going "POOF YOU CANT SEE". If they do it like that, I will have officially lost all faith in the new generation of animators.
Are the thorns actually shoved INTO his eyes, or can he stumble upon them?
There are two versions in the fairy tale, apparently.
1. The witch tells him that Rapunzel died/deserted him/whatever, and in despair he throws himself out the window of the tower and falls into the thorns, losing his eyes.
2. The witch pushes him out of the window, and he falls into the thorn bushes and loses his eyes.
Either way, it involves falling into thorns from a great height, meaning the thorns stab him with a pretty great force. There's no "stumbling" into them.

AH! I see.
That could work. I definitely see #2 happening, if it happens.
Forgive my ignorance, but has a witch been confirmed to be in this movie?
I'm pretty sure a witch, or at the least a female villain, has been confirmed. I also see number 2, number 1 could be seen as an act of suicide.
Here's another promo, this one actually showing the villainess, Mother Gothel:

Thank you, Robo.
And . . . . yes, it would be seen as an act of suicide. Because it was. The prince just failed and lost his eyes instead.

A villainess at least. The supplementary merchandising is already showcasing some of that stuff.
She has curly hair.
Another Tangled promo vid, this one showcasing the horse, Maximus:

I gotta admit, this made me chuckle pretty hard. Looks like we're going with the "silent animal sidekick" thing, and it's all the better for it. The expressions alone make it hilarious.
Looks like they're continuing the great tradition of Disney horses. The last one I can remember is the black horse in Mulan (who had some great moments himself). And no, I do NOT count Home on the Range!!
Hercules right before Mulan also had Pegasus. Not quite a horse, but close enough. There really haven't been any since then, but then, there haven't been all that many movies.
I still say the Rapunzel horse is the one from Road to El Dorado.
Who can fetch keys instead of prybars.

I still pretend that Home on the Range never happened. That movie was God awful, and I actually like Roseanne Barr.
Disney movies has always had some pretty good 'silent animal sidekicks'. Maximus (I swear, I think of Max, Goofy's son when I say his name though) seems like a welcome addition. Kind of reminds me of Samson from Sleeping Beauty, only far more wacky.

Hell, Flynn still reminds me of Tulio.
And this time, instead of a sexy hespanic girl, Tulio's getting an innocent, nieve young girl with freakishly long hair.
Honestly, I think I prefer my animal sidekicks to not talk, because with all the stupidity the 'smart', communicative humans get themselves into, to have the 'dumb' animal just give them looks that so clearly say "…what the HELL are you doing?" is wonderful.
And yes, Maximus and Flynn definitely have the Road to El Dorado feel to their personality/style (don't see it in Rapunzel yet, though).
Not that being compared to The Road To El Dorado is a bad thing, because I really, really love that movie.
Whether an animal should talk or not really depends on the movie for me. In some cases it really works (Cinderella, Little Mermaid) in others it works better if they don't (Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin).
I think it's often a case of whether or not the hero/heroine has someone to talk to. In cases like Cinderella and Little Mermaid, for the majority of the movie they have nobody to confide in, or to scheme with. Hence the talking animals. But in cases like Sleeping Beauty or Aladdin, they have other sidekicks/mentors to talk to (the Three Fairies, Genie). And sometimes it's just a matter of if it's logical for them to talk or not (Mushu is a spirit guardian in Mulan, for example, or in Tarzan where, duh, he can talk to apes so of course they talk back).
In Tangled's case, Rapunzel and Flynn are going to be each other's foil, so no need for talking animals.

Wait, so what's your stance on Iago?
Comedic sidekicks and flunkies need to blend with the style of the movie. I felt that worked well in The Little Mermaid, Hercules, and Aladdin, where almost everyone had an air of silliness that helped escort the tone away from somber.
But it didn't work with more serious films like Pocahontas and Hunchback, yet somehow Lion King, Mulan and Tarzan struck a fitting blend of the two stylistic approaches.
Who was the sidekick in Sleeping Beauty?
Who was the sidekick in Sleeping Beauty?
Well, there were those three fairies, but if you ask me, I think they were the main characters.
Also, there was Aurora's animal friends, as well as Prince Phillip's horse.
Wait, so what's your stance on Iago?
Well in Iago's defense, he is a parrot, and parrots do have the ability to talk. Even if they aren't believed to have a rational speaking mindset.
Although I've seen some in real life which can communicate excellent to get what they want (and will ninja you if they don't get it)
But it didn't work with more serious films like Pocahontas and Hunchback, yet somehow Lion King, Mulan and Tarzan struck a fitting blend of the two stylistic approaches.
I think it works better in Lion King, Mulan and Tarzan because it dedicates scenes to being funny. When something serious is happening, the sidekick(s) is(are) A. Not there or B. Shutting up and letting the serious stuff happen. On the other hand we have Hunchback. It just tosses the Gargoyles into serious scenes, interrupting the flow and expecting people to laugh. I don't think the tone of the film decides whether or not it can work.
Wait, so what's your stance on Iago?
Well, I was thinking of the hero, and Aladdin has the Genie to talk to, and Abu doesn't talk. I forgot about Iago.
But when you think about it, Jafar doesn't have any other henchmen, so Iago talks so he can act as a foil for Jafar's scheming.
Congratulations Satsuki, you've gotten me to smile a smile of "I never thought if something like that before".
In this case, it's the idea of the Genie being a side-kick, and one more important than the main character.
Okay, people, we finally, FINALLY got a promo of the villainess, Mother Gothel. Enjoy:

I think we got another great Disney villain. It really is the trademark of a Disney movie, isn't it? If the villain isn't great, the movie suffers.
And here's a funny Q&A with the directors about Flynn:
ZmBPVIYaE7Q
we do have a tangled thread Satsuki!!!!!!!!!! Sheesh!!!!
lol
i think i'm going to wait till the film comes out before viewing any more behind the scenes
Both threads work!
I have to say, I'm not as hyped for this as I was Princess and the Frog (which I still freaking adore). But, I definately want to see it in theaters. I will fight friends and family to the death to be able to see it.
I missed out on Scott Pilgrim, I'm not going to make that mistake again.
Unlike SP, I have plenty of people who want to see this movie.
Oh, I'd be double-hyped for this if it were traditional cel animation, but I'm liking what I'm seeing, so far. I like how their CGI isn't photo-real, like so many CGI movies succumb to.
It was announced (i think) that the next 2d movie after Winnie the Pooh is gonna be something about mort from a Disney diskworld thing?
mort? Diskworld? What?
Oh wow, I never heard about that.
I'd love to see a disney animated discworld film!
Discworld is basically an uber popular comedy/fantasy series by Terry Pratchett. Mort is the fourth book in the series(fairly good, although personally not one of my favourites). Although they're all set in the same world, different books focus on different groups of people, and this is the first book focusing on the characters who appear in it, so there's no prior knowledge required.
Ohhhh, that Discworld!
I'm surprised Disney would want to animate that. But hey, wherever you can find source material, I guess.
Shut up!!! DISC WORLD!!! OMG!!! Though I'm fairly torn about it. Half the awesomeness of the series is the fun writing style and it would be extremely difficult to be able to capture the same sense of creativity and imagination (though it helps that it's not live action). Still though an animated Vetinari? BEST DISNEY VILLAIN EVER GUARANTEED.
Vetinari isn't a villain.
I'm still kind of sad about the Snow Queen, but I'm really excited about 2d films that aren't princess related. I hate to say it, but I really feel like the whole Disney Princess thing is probably over
Seems that way, given the loss of the Snow Queen and the way Rapunzel Tangeled is being marketed.
It's a shame, I was looking forward to the Snow Queen.

Over at Progress City, they've got a really big rumor…
We all know that after "Winnie the Pooh" next year, there is a hole in the schedule and then there is a mystery as to what will come out in 2013/2014. The site is reporting a rumor that Ron Clements and John Musker's next film will be an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's book "Mort." Blue Sky reported that the next hand drawn film from the Mouse would again be by the duo back earlier this year. At the time we knew it was a fantasy. I was told, but didn't reveal that it was based on a book by a famous fantasy author that was published in the 80's. This book fits the period when the book came out and the type of author that would provide this source material.
But is it true?
Yes, kinda. I will say that the film does take place in the Discworld series which is where the Mort book (fourth in the line of books, btw) takes place, but remember that this is an adaptation that won't necessarily be literal (no film adaptation really is). I got confirmation from the Bothans of this. The hero of the book shows that this is an entirely different kind of story than Walt Disney Animation Studio has told before, but it does have a princess in it. Remember that this is early in the process and things can change. It's at least three years before it will come out and the animation process is a long, bumpy and slow road. This project as well as "Reboot Ralph" and another to be announced "untitled project" give you a sense as to how the course will change in the Mouse's animation direction after that one year break. Interesting, no?
So now you know what the next hand drawn is, but you still don't know how different it really is...
Quite a few Discworld books it could be then(and with those hints, mort could be one of them).
Vetinari isn't a villain.
He's villanous enough. At the very least he himself considers himself a Tyrant.

Well, being from the '80s and having a Princess cuts it down to Mort and Pyramids. Mort is the obvious choice (though I'm willing to wager that they'll merge Princess Keli and Ysabell), but Pyramids would be more interesting.
I'd love it if they did Going Postal, totally one of my favs (Making Money is pretty good too though Postal had the better ending).
I'm still kind of sad about the Snow Queen, but I'm really excited about 2d films that aren't princess related. I hate to say it, but I really feel like the whole Disney Princess thing is probably over
And yet every time the studio needs a boost, they do a princess fairy tale . . . . . (Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Princess and the Frog).
I'm fine with non-princess films coming out. I just hope they don't abandon heroines and fairy tales entirely.
Which is one reason I'm so steamed about Snow Queen being shelved. Perfect opportunity for a heroine who WASN'T a princess.
Mort would be one of the best books for them to adapt, it's got an easily understandable plot, a love story and a climactic battle.
@Thousand:
He's villanous enough. At the very least he himself considers himself a Tyrant.
Everything he does is for the good of the city, if anything he's an antihero.
Everything he does is for the good of the city, if anything he's an antihero.
I know that. My point is he has some very fun "villainous" characteristics like killing people without batting an eyelid. That's what I mean by close enough. Though deep down he cares about the city, the way he acts at times is a bit dubious. Which is one of the reasons why he's so awesome. He's so good and evil at the same time. And it'd be absolutely delicious to see that animated.
But he wouldn't be a "disney villain" is what we're saying.
Disney could also go with "guards guards", although that would be a completely different princess then normal disney films.
But he wouldn't be a "disney villain" is what we're saying.
Ah yeah, well no he wouldn't be anywhere close to that.

Wasn't that the first book where Vetinari's position was threatened? Fun.

That only worked once with the Little Mermaid, and one hit doesn't really mean a trend considering PatF wasn't a huge success.
Even in the Disney Renaissance, Disney heroines were slowly evolving out of the princess mold. Belle (and Tiana for that matter) wasn't royalty at all until she married her less than perfect prince (see PatF as well). Then with Mulan, Meg, and then Lilo and Nani, disney heroines have become more and more hands on and the princess idea has become more and more archaic. You know an idea is getting old when disney itself starts parodying it (Enchanted… which was, funny enough, about a princess giving UP royalty for realism). Face it, there's only so much you can do when you're chained to a castle.
I know there's a lot of independent girls out there who never really clicked with the princess thing, and though I do love the princess films, there's just more to women than a sense of self importance.
Indeed, which again, was one reason I was so sad that Snow Queen got shelved. Wasted opportunity.
Oh well, boys need their Disney Heroes too. Now where's a damn adaptation of Momotaro? That's a folktale that's just screaming for a Disney movie. (young hero goes off on adventure with animal sidekicks)
Out of all the Discworld novels they're thinking of adapting Mort? Don't get me wrong, I love it to death (skull joke), but you'd think something like Wyrd Sisters, Guards Guards or Sourcery would be more suited for disney fare than a novel about the Grim Reaper.
Honestly, I'd rather not see any of Pratchetts work Disneyfied, apart from the Tiffany Aching series which is already aimed at younger viewers. The plots, themes and characters of the main series is fantasy for adults, not kids.
Disney did make the hunchback of notre dame.
This isn't exactly great strides from that.
