In the middle of the Arlong fight.
I can kind of see where Luffy was going with the "Get Arlong's Teeth" idea, but it was still stupid. XD
In the middle of the Arlong fight.
I can kind of see where Luffy was going with the "Get Arlong's Teeth" idea, but it was still stupid. XD
i´ve already read recently a lot of volumes before the 4 weeks thing. right now im reading volume 49
…. trying to catch up is SOOO not working out. good thing i love OP so much. -_-
btw, re-reading and seeing Sanji's face when he realizes Luffy has the ability to stretch = priceless. now of course, he's use to it.
I keep waiting for Luffy to pull out that set of Arlong's teeth again as a souvenir that he kept.
I expect it less as time goes on, but the idea still amuses me.
Finished Little Garden and Drum recently. Been keeping notes as I go along with the chapters and organized them. Going to try and just read the entire Alabasta story in one sitting eventually. Unfortunately, that means compiling a bunch of little details which piled up into this huge post that I organized during commercials while watching tv.
Side stories/SBS
! I forgot how much the side story expanded Coby and Helmeppo's story once Garp took them under wing. They seemed to just have been training the entire time. It was a nice touch to switch from the near half moon to full moon, especially since that fits with the current storyline's time.
! Also didn't realize that Vivi was part of those animal/cover pages even during their adventures. I thought that Vivi wasn't part of that until awhile AFTER she stayed in Alabasta.
! Jango's coverstory had an astronaut in one of those pages. I remember spectulation on that being a Celestrial Dragon but he seems to have the full suit on. I wonder if that was just for fashion, a big clue, or whether Oda just wanted to draw one for fun.
! SBS answer something caught my eye. Oda was explaining the sailing ceremony for a new ship. Here's the quote directly from Arlong Park
! To celebrate, the would break a bottle of liquor on the bow of the ship, and if the bottle didn't break, that ship was cursed with bad luck, so the person who breaks in has to be really sure they can do it.
! This was followed by Kaya trying to break the bottle on Merry and it didn't. Nice SBS foreshadowing right there. I hope the Thousand Sunny had a better Sailing ceremony.
Little Garden
! It's interesting that Dorry and Brogy both shared a wanted poster.
! I take back what I said about Mr. 5. His use of his powers did have some more creativity than I think Mr. 3 gives him credit for. A bomb breath and being able to swallow gunpowder? That's decent for creativity. Still could be more creative, and Miss Valentine is tied with Bellamy for least creative non-Zoan user.
! I'm still waiting for Zoro's flaming swords to come back into the story, even if it's just another one time thing like Luffy's "candle" attacks. He seemed to like his swords on fire.
! Jumped on the Luffy's "instinct" is Observation haki bandwagon. There's another scene in Skypiea that also makes me think so. Also wondering why Oda chose Instinct as the volume title and if it's important but I don't think that volume titles have significant meanings in them.
! Carue is beastly to have the power to turn a teenage girl into a little kid.:ninja:
! Elbaf arc will be pretty sweet. There's one thing I want to see: a giant with DF powers. Giants by themselves are already really powerful, but a giant with super powers would just be insane.
! Also interested in the "god" of Elbaf and if that will become important in the future, though in my mind Elbaf's "god" is more along the lines of ancient Shandora than of present day Skypiea's god in that it's part of it's ancient history.
Drum
! Each spoiler tag has three lines in it. Turned into a huge block of text without spoiler tags.
! Wapol
! The diverse range that Wapol is portrayed is insane. I mean first, he was fodder for Luffy to take out. Then he comes back and becomes "threatening", KILLING the guards of Drum and "killing" Dalton. Then that brutal Lapan attack. Then that FLASHBACK, and then back to a comic relief villain.
! Maybe it's just the comparison of Wapol to ordinary citizens and to the Strawhats. Wapol and his followers are pretty threatening, but Luffy knocked Wapol out easily. It's nice to have that comparison from the two perspectives.
! Plus, Wapol's "ultimate form" was shown in the flashback, which seems to have taken down Dalton easily. I doubt it would've made much of a difference in Luffy's fight, but it would've been cool to see that form in present day.
Flashback
! I really like where the flashback was placed. We've seen Luffy attack this guy before, but this punch really felt satisfying after realizing what a douche Wapol really is.
! The scene when Hiluluk tried to scare Chopper away and the montage before it reminded me of how Ace/Sabo/Luffy flashback was handled with it's suddenness.
! Plus, I didn't realize Dalton was actually considered "dead" for at least in between volume 16 and volume 17 and that he was killed "before" the Drum flashback occurred. Another classic example of Wapol's "redeeming villany" in the eyes of the readers. That was done really well.
Hiluluk
! Hiluluk's intro. I completely forgot that he was first introduced burning a house down and stealing 50000 berries. Then he was shown "knocking out" a woman and then "harming" her husband with that medicine, all in front of their kid. That kid must've been dramatized.
! I can't believe how likable Hiluluk becomes after that introduction. A very good example of a not black/white character. Plus, it's nice to remember his obsession with bombs.
! I wonder if we'll ever find out what that "distant kingdom to the west" was. I can't tell if that means West of the Grand Line "Which could really be any direction really at this point, even a place in the new World", West Blue or where ever.
Chopper
! I forgot how round he used to be. His "happy" dance that first time definitely didn't make me want to squeeze Chopper for being so cute. The flashback still made me feel for him, hard. Then the second "happy" dance didn't seem as odd to me.
! Really sweet moment when Kureha called both Hiluluk and Chopper klutzy and then Chopper runs into a tree. A moment that stood out for me.
! Two year timeskip, I want Chopper's antlers to grow. Those adult antlers were huge compared to Chopper, though I don't know if Chopper really will "man" up in those two years.
! Then there was that fight with Chessmarimo. That was awesome. He really seemed capable as a fighter here, but then I got to thinking about how easily Wapol was beaten down earlier and that made me wonder how "strong" Chessmarimo was compared to the Strawhats at the time. Regardless, that was an EXCELLENT fight to showcase Chopper's abilities.
Miscellaneous
! Kureha only threw knives in the manga. Honestly, I was slightly disappointed. The pictures of her "labs" along with that picture of the castle were really cool though. So many skulls in that lab it's ridiculous.
! Blackbeard's silouette is also pretty revealing. Only Blackbeard and Van Augur looked the same. Maybe Jesus, but the other two not so much.
! Isshi 20 are crazy. They revived the announced to be dead Dalton and surgically reattached Wapol's head. That's insane medical work right there.
Crew number# mystery
! I wondered why Chopper never got that # member chapter. After really thinking about it, I think I finally figured it out. Each time a # member shows up, the crewmate willingly either asks or says that they want to be part of the crew, and Luffy accepts.
! * Zoro:he accepted being part of Luffy's crew after the "deal"
! Chopper actually rejected the offer initally, but then Luffy said shut up and let's go, then Chopper just agreed. Zoro even pointed out that it wasn't really an invitation.
! So I'm assuming for him to get that # page, he will need to ask to be part of Luffy's crew or declare himself a member of the Strawhats to Luffy in some unforeseen scenario. I wonder how Oda plans for Chopper to be "reinvited" to the crew.
Updated list of Usopp's lies
! Usopp's tall tales
! * giant goldfish
! The bolded ones have been shown to be true. Did some research with the help of Stephen's translations and the one piece wiki.
! * Giant goldfish and island made of poop was confrimed at the end of Little Garden.
! Then again, huge birds of prey have appeared (giant bird that caught Luffy in the beginning of Buggy arc) and will appear again throughout the story (Giant South Birds, Chuchuun)but none of them really fit "condor". Plus, Viz has it translated as Vulture which could be Miss Friday maybe?
Islands where Usopp's Can't-go-on-island-itis hits so far
! * Whiskey Peak
!
After Robby pointed out that the Captain Usopp lie which I forgot to put down and was technically trueAfter remembering that Usopp has given himself a lot of nicknames in the series, I am also hoping to compile a list of Usopp's "titles" and Usopp's "deceitful fighting strategies" as well, but I want to put a chapter listing of all the pages where Usopp claims to have 8000+ followers and calls himself Captain Usopp as well which I'll do maybe, eventually.Usopp's growth. Promised myself I'd evaluate it during this reread.
! After Loguetown, Usopp seemed to carry this "can fight" attitude. Now, I think it was just hubris brought on by his recent win, but he attacked Moji no problem and distracted Ritchie. Elbaf also seemed to point him out in the right direction, having been inspired to become a Proud Warrior like the giants. Then he went into battle.
! Usopp was afraid, but still had Luffy's back when he got into trouble. It's just a shame that Miss Valentine and Mr. 5 were too much for Usopp.
! After thinking about that comment by Cyber-Robin(I've been keeping up with everyone's comments on this thread), Usopp beating Mr. 5 would've been a nice confidence boost for Usopp and believable. He was no match for Zoro and Luffy, but maybe Usopp could've struggled and beaten him as well. That's more wishful thinking than Oda's vision, so I really have no say in the matter.
! This was a total confidence shock for Usopp. Gunpowder attacks didn't work. His lead star attack missed. He was "exploded" and "pressed" multiple times. Then, he was saved by Nami, Vivi, and Zoro. His fight with Chuu was so much easier in comparison. It really seemed to be a "wake up call" about his skills as a fighter.
! Sadly, the battle seemed to have made him take a step backwards on becoming a proud warrior instead. When the Strawhats started to fight Wapol's goons. I wished Usopp at least attempted to fight instead of hiding while Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji handle it. Granted, his only panel in that scene was him dodging bullets, the others didn't need Usopp's help, and he could've shot some goons off panel.
! STILL, I wish there could've been that one panel of Usopp attacking a goon instead of watching Luffy fight. He fought against the Kuro fodder before. It wouldn't be unbelievable for Usopp to knock out one goon.
Stuff for today. Today we see Cybermen, James Bond Villains, Heal Slimes and The Pandorica

That was just used as an example dude. No foreshadowing whatsoever, was just a throwaway joke.
Oh, dude. I was already doing this before I saw this thread. xD
i will have to quit , school is making it impossible :(
I did the same as a few people here, I just re read up to TB, and then read The War Arc and post. Currently on volume 47
chuckles I can't believe Yosaku said Arlong was as strong as Jinbei in Chapter 69. what a joke after reading all of the things the SH pirates went through.
@metteminne:
i will have to quit , school is making it impossible :(
OK you can quit school, is taking you nowhere either
OK you can quit school, is taking you nowhere either
yeah , i just go int the politics , there they dont need brains:ninja:
but i did read until longuetown and i actually expected more fighting styles from arlong, and indeed the statement where they say that he is almost as strong as jimbei is funny
That was just used as an example dude. No foreshadowing whatsoever, was just a throwaway joke.
Merry had tons of bad luck on its journey. Even if it was just a joke demonstration, it still seems to show that Merry is gonna be going through some troubles on its journey, which it did.
Just finished vol. 6 and darn it if I'm not done before Ch. 598 hits the web. If that happens, then I won't read it until I reach it fair and square. >:)
….yeah, right.
I have to add that Zoro vs. Mihawk must be the best part of all of East Blue. It manages to be emotional and epic at the same time in a way that the rest of the series won't have before the Grand Line.
Also, I like how the first timeskip almost occured in Baratie. :D
Read up to Robin joining so far. So much fun.

Sorry, got caught up talking about OP with some people on Skype yesterday and forgot to read the chapters. But I got caught up, so here is yesterday's
! Unluck’s Amazing 4-Week Long Reread of the Amazing Manga Series One Piece and Her Comments on Her Experience Doing So
Day 7: September 2: Alabasta part 1 – 154 to 174
! * Ace! I like Ace. I know some people don’t, but I like him. Especially after the Luffy flashback.
! and today's.
! >! Day 8: September 3: Alabasta part 2 – 175 to 196
! * Luffy looks good in that Native American outfit on the cover page. The tiger does not.
Pacing up! The whole Krieg saga really got to me and now I realize what people mean by Arlong Park as modern One Piece's start shot. I've read three volumes today already and I guess I'm gonna have to slow down a little or I'll have nothing left to read when I get to Ch. 597. I'm hoping to read vol. 59-60 the day before One Piece resumes, so I won't have to wait.
I think Sanji's flashback is my all-time favorite for One Piece. Ironically, it's the only one where no named character dies. Zeff is a great character, and I think it'd be cool to see him in future flashbacks along with other historical pirates.
Gin… Will he return, or will he not? Same for Johnny and Josack. Will they be Grand Line strong after the time skip? It'd be rather cool for them to become some sort of rival bounty hunters, but I don't think that'll happen. They're on too good terms with Luffy and the gang.
It'd be hilarious if a fishman shows up that looks just like Luffy's drawing. :D
Was Rååmu (Arlong's cow, I don't know it's japanese name) from the Grand Line or the Calm Belt? It's size seems rather blend in comparision with the other Calm Belters we see in vol. 12, so I think it would've just been bait around there.
Hachi!! To think that guy would play such a major role later on.
Has the strenght of Fishmen paled in the Grand Line. Arlong nor Kuroobi were even phased by bullets back in Arlong Park, but Hachi was shot just like that in Sabaody? Fodderisation, special bullets or simply Hachi wasn't as tough as them?
Anyway, I'm gonna keep my own schedule from here on. Chapter 598 arrives on September 29th, and that's 25 days from now. Once I finish vol. 10, I'll be 50 volumes behind. So 2 volumes a day from here on out seems like a decent pace. :)
- It'd be hilarious if a fishman shows up that looks just like Luffy's drawing. :D
Oh my god. This would be both hilarious and awesome if it happened lol.
I'm rewatching the anime at the moment with the Funimation dvds (since I own Episodes 1 - 169). But when I get episode 169 (Chapter 256 in the manga, also the beginning of Volume 28), I'm going to jump to manga of that chapter to my full run of Part 1 of One Piece.
Current in my run of the series, I'm middle of the Louge Town Arc on Chapters 99/100 (episodes 52 and 53 in the anime)

Bad luck??! They had no one qualified to look after the ship properly! Wasn't bad luck, for the most part it was mistreatment. Even Luffy says that to Merry's Klabautermann
Oh Usopp Spell…I hope after Usopp's "power up" after 2 years of training with Herakles, he'll have more creative attacks and inventions that aren't just regulated to using Kabuto.
Bad luck??! They had no one qualified to look after the ship properly! Wasn't bad luck, for the most part it was mistreatment. Even Luffy says that to Merry's Klabautermann
It could be said that it was bad luck for the Going Merry to be given to the Strawhats in the first place, or bad luck that the crew didn't have somebody to fix the Merry properly. That crew definitely did help with the mistreatment though, so I'll give you that.
But I'd definitely call the octopus balloon deflating too early bad luck, especially since that fall is what caused the kneel to break.

I would also say Wapol eating some of it as bad luck.
waitaminute
I can't do this. I promised to not read/watch Alabasta for five years.
I'm sticking to that.
How the hell does Alabasta get the fruits that are the countries protector animals? Do they grow the devil fruit trees or specifically search the world for those fruits?
I know! This has always driven me crazy! I thought maybe a tree grows where
the fruit user dies… hmmm
Hello again ^^ I've just finished chapter 197 and now hope I'll be able to keep to the system more! I'd really like to have read everything up to thriller bark by next weekend XD is that too ambitiuos?!
I'm really enjoying reading the notes you guys have (especially Unlucks') and I wish you luck on you rereads :)

Good point. Now that I think about it, it could be that octopuses are "softer" than sharks and stingrays, making the bullets more effective in Hachi.
Ended up getting really behind schedule… still have to go through Drum and Alabasta to catch up. Let's see how things work out.
Today's reading covered Jaya and early Skypiea. Finished on 240

! * My brother had one of the bubble-eyed goldfish. It was pretty awesome.
ARGH. I TOTALLY FORGOT FOXY WAS IN THE MANGA TOO >____<#
For some reason, my brain registered him under anime only filler. Maybe cause he was even more annoying there. Well, at least he goes away and never shows up again in the manga. Almost at Water 7.

Probably cus there was an extra DBF filler arc?
I really hope we get some fun arcs again soon. The past couple of arcs have been pretty angry on the whole and we could do with a nice short comedy arc.
Reading ahead a bit (some of tomorrow's quota) before going out for the rest of this three-day weekend. Such a useless devil fruit for Pierre, but so hilarious!
At first, I dashed ahead and read over 100 chapters in two days, mainly because I know the early acrs up to Drum pretty much backwards already. I lost track how often I reread those.
Then, after Little Garden, I got lazy, so now I'm actually behind the schedule lol
I knew I wouldn't be able to follow it, I'm no good with schedules when it comes to things like reading.
But damn it, I'm not gonna fall behind any more than this. I've just read Alabasta in one sitting, I'll read Jaya too and then call it a day (it's 2:30 am here anyway)
Haha, why do I always do this when I gotta work the next day? It's really strange, I never do such things when I actually have the time to do it.
Reading Alabasta from the beginning to the end non-stop was pretty nice.
I haven't reread Skypiea that often yet, there are actually some things I barely remember, so I'm totally looking forward to that (that's the main reason why I rushed through Alabasta today).
Sanji Bottom left hand panel kills me cause of his present situation haha
http://read.mangashare.com/One-Piece/chapter-157/page007.html
lol - I am not participating in this 4-week reread because I had already started my own reread (I was on the 14 volume when this began I believe) it turns out however that I am right on pace with where I should be as of sep 5th (I just started vol 25). Maybe I will join in for these last few weeks. (the problem is that I am also reading Berserk, Black Cat and Vagabond – so I probably won't be able to.)
gotta say, Jaya has one of my all time favorite scenes….. "you asked if I could throw a punch?"
by far Luffy's most bad ass moment
Sanji Bottom left hand panel kills me cause of his present situation haha

Hah, I definitely noticed that. I consider it proof that Oda has been planning Kamabakka for a long time.

i just finished me reread
Finished up Alabasta yesterday. I'm just gonna jot down what I remember was interesting. I didn't take notes. Just enjoyed the read.
Really random thoughts about Alabasta.
! Ace did have a cool entrance, but I still don't think he deserved all of his popularity.
! There were way too many flashbacks. I'm not talking about the flashback involving Vivi or Pell either. I mean flashbacks about earlier scenes in the story, and even Alabasta arc itself. Sure, 90% of them seemed to enhance the story but I think I didn't need to be reminded about Toto for the third time. This could be an exaggeration but I do remember a lot of flashbacks from the current storyline.
! That war was brutal. Sure, the extra scenes drawing nameless characters drop dead do waste panel space but it really showed the brutality of this war.
! It didn't click until this reread that Mr. 4 used Lasso to attack the Super Duck Billed Squad when everyone first ran past Baroque works. I was just thinking too that I didn't remember if lasso was ever used in just gun mode.
! I love the fight scenes. I really think the fights here are the best.
! Something I wondered though was about Zoro. He was talking about his duel with Mihawk right before he cut Mr. 1 right? he was feeling life-or-death I just don't remember him thinking he learned about the breath at that time.
! I realized that Mr. 2 did not say he was a cook. If he did, then it wasn't when he first met Sanji. I forgot why I thought that. Believe it was somebody on the forums.
! Speaking of the forum, I felt annoyed when Vivi tripped and scraped her knee. I also thought of the Vivi hate when I got to the "stop the fighting" scene. She wasn't bad. I also liked her farewell speech a lot more this time around for some reason. Always liked the X scene but that farewell speech beforehand never hit home as close as it did this time.
Cliffnotes on Usopp's lies
! He tells Chopper his Sea King in the Calm Belt story
convinces Chopper that he is the one responsible for making crabs walk sideways
andmentions a lobster. I was thinking speedy shrimp but I'm not sure about translation on this one.
! told Miss Merry Christmas
he defeated all the Baroque Agents,
can carry 5 tons,
and is the Lord of Destruction.
! Oh, he also has I-cant-take-another-step-or-i'll-die disease.sidestory
! Didn't realize Hina wasn't named in her side story. Can't wait for fisherman dude in Hachi's sidestory to become super important. ;p
! I stopped at the end of volume 23 but Hachi is still pretty selfish in this coverstory so far when it revolves around that Octofishwoman.
! Noticed the mermaid calendar. Nice.
! Jango and Fullbody make a great duo. Their reappearance in Alabasta was golden. Every scene.Too much haki in brains
! I'm not trying to point out scenes where haki was used in Alabasta. I'm giving 2 anecdotes about how I tried too hard to connect haki with the past story.
! I mentioned how I thought Drake's eye in the recent appearance in the story was a sign of haki since Mihawk had the same eyes.
Somebody pointed out how there were scenes in Alabasta that had these eyes. I agreed I was looking too much into it.
Then i reread the scene with Luffy facing the cat again where Luffy has those circular eyes. The cat didn't seem scared until after Luffy had that panel so for awhile I thought it WAS proof of haki.
Then Robin had those eyes when facing Tashigi and her guards in Alabasta so I realized I need to stop seeing haki everywhere.
! Which reminded me that I started looking too much into the SBS question about Miss Goldenweek and her explanation on hypnosis.
It uses suggestion, and "color" in this case…the quotes for color made me think about the Colors of haki and that it could be a double meaning. I know that it's not. Color in the SBS just means different color. But I did try to connect the two. That's really bad.
I'm really loving reading through Skypiea. Probably because I have never read this before. Sadly, this is the part of OP where I just watched a few of the episodes and skipped around. I'm glad to be much more thorough this time around.

I really hope we get some fun arcs again soon. The past couple of arcs have been pretty angry on the whole and we could do with a nice short comedy arc.
I find Thriller Bark to be like 80% comedy. The Flying Fish arc was 99% comedy. But yes, from Shabaody till now, it's been pretty dead serious, mostly the Straw Hat separation and the War.
(But I find Impel Down to be quite comedic, if you ask me. At least, untill Luffy's almost-death.)
Yeah I think ID is pretty comedy too. Well. The ID cast (Sadi, Hannybal, Magellen, even Saldeath and Domino were pretty funny.) were. I didn't find the others to be very funny.
done with alabasta, onto jaya and skypiea mmmmmmmmmmmm
