There's still a couple more filler matches yet. I'll see if I can't find a place for her somewhere. Best catgirl ever.
Hrm. Best catgirl…
@Thousand:
Hey robby, was Pai from 3x3 eyes also up for consideration?
And what about Ranma? (female version)
I didn't think of Pai, but she would have been good… if obscure.
Ranma's gender bending makes it unfair, it would have been Akane instead probably. Given that this board is more familiar with Inu-Yasha, and pretty much hates it, I figured anything from Takehashi was really asking for trouble. Nausicaa is the oldest thing in this match, and she's a titular Miyazaki character.
And no love for Utena apparently. That's kind of surprising.
Picture time! Since I'm not campaigning for anyone character, just pics of a few that I like.
! Battle Angel
! Gunsmith Cats
!
! Revolutionary Girl Utena
!
! Slayers
!
I'm sure I'll dig out more from my collection! XD
@robbybedfart:

That's so sad, I love Utena! Its my favorite girly series ever! I still remember how I had watched the first four episodes of the series and then decided I should see the movie…. Bad idea. I had no clue wtf was going on! I understand it a bit more now that I've seen all but 10 episodes of the series. And reading the entire manga helped too.
Interesting poll, theres a ton of females in anime that are awesome, so I understand it was probably hard to get a set list of them. Im also suprised in the lack of shonen female characters, but most of them suck anyway.
Robby, of all the series represented in this match, which would you suggest I read/watch first?
Why wouldn't you vote for Lina?
man its hard to find pictures off caska with clothes on, she is always naked it seems…
Robby, of all the series represented in this match, which would you suggest I read/watch first?
if i can also suggest, i would surely sugest berserk
I'm glad to see Sailor Moon getting her butt kicked in the polls. Well, not butt kicked but at least she's not winning.
I don't like Sailor moon either. She has got the most broken powerup I've ever seen in a manga.
Vote for Ryoko!!
Robby, of all the series represented in this match, which would you suggest I read/watch first?
Slayers or Berserk.
Try the first 10 episodes of Slayers, it's a self contained arc, you'll know if you love it or hate by that point, and then can decide if you want to proceed through the four seasons and 6 movies. Stick with the anime for Slayers.
Berserk is also amazing as well, one of my all time favorites. Manga still isn't finished, but… it IS one of the best things being done, hiatuses be damned. The anime is also really solid and only 25 episodes, but most that read the manga first hates it.
Tenchi is good, but its had so many continuities and reboots its hard to reccomend any one particular part of it.
Slayers or Berserk would be my first choices.
Nausicaa (the manga version anyway) is also self contained and considered Miyazaki's master work, and is the shorthand answer to "what is the best manga?". But its not my personal favorite.
Avoid Sailor Moon, it HAD to be one of your starter anime 14 years ago and full of nostalgia value. There's no other way for it to be watchable.
The best Tenchi series to watch is ether Tenchi Muyo OVA or Tenchi Universe. Tenchi Universe is the easist since The Universe tv series, Tenchi Movies 1 and 3 all go together for one storyline connected into one universe.
What's wrong with Boa Hancock,I mean Sailor Moon. :ninja:
come on! don't compare boa with that whiny little princess … -___- sailor moon and vivi would love hanging out together ... shivers god that would be truely terrible
robby, you forgot Negima:(

Fair enough. If I were to watch Slayers, how was the dub? I prefer to watch anime dubbed (weird, I know), but the cast is made up of New York actors, and we all know the deal with New York actors…
since i know none of them, i closed my eyes and clicked away!
the laki ones:
Lina Inverse
Nausicaa
Usagi Tsukino
! Love Utena <3<3<3
! Ryoko
!
!
! More Rally Vincent
! Driving her Blue Shelby GT500 Mustang. I swear, this series has some of the greatest 2d animation for its time. This is not the best picture but yeah.
!
! Battle Angel
!
! And another not-naked picture of Caska. I need to finish this series, its so good!
I voted Sailor Moon
@Thousand:
robby, you forgot Negima:(
Negima has too many caveats and a really bad start and is a lolicon harem manga at its core. As good as it is, its not first on my recommendation list.
Compared to Naruto or Bleach or the hiatused HxH? Absolutely.
But not compared to Slayers or Berserk.
Fair enough. If I were to watch Slayers, how was the dub? I prefer to watch anime dubbed (weird, I know), but the cast is made up of New York actors, and we all know the deal with New York actors…
The dub is actually pretty decent initially, the voice they had for Lina was pretty good, as was the first Zelgadis voice. But then I saw it BEFORE pokemon started airing…. So now its a little funky and adds some bizarre hilarity when the pokemon voice actors provide voices. Gourry/Brock is particularly wierd.
I switched to the Japanese about halfway through season 1, because the later cast choices weren't so great. Amelia was really grating and second Zelgadis didn't work for me.
In season 2 dub Xellos is godawful worst voice ever, and ruins a main recurring character completely. (Same voice that did 4Kids Sanji... only TRYING to be annoying.) Worst cast voice EVER. if you get that far, I reaaaaally have to recommend switching at that point.
Oh. Also. Slayers is a comedy. Berserk is a dark bloody violent war story. Slightly different.
so only 2 pictures were caska wears clothes can be found huh? guess i will try to find one where she still wears clothes
and indeed you should finish berserk
edit: found one
!
Alrighty, fair enough. Yeah, Wikipedia listed David Moo as Xellos.
David lollipopbrooklyn Moo… :cwy:
Having only read Beelzebub out of those series, I voted for Aoi.

I've seen both the dub and the sub, I like them about the same really. Lisa Ortiz is famous for doing Lina's english voice (she also voiced Chopper for a while in the games I believe, and briefly in the anime) and you also have some Pokemon va's like the guy that voices Brock does Gourry the idiot swordsman.
But I think I do prefer the japanese because Megumi Hayashibara (who sings all the Slayers openings) does Lina's voice =3

Oh god, can't forget the infamous David Moo… UUGH. Yeah, I had to switch to the sub at that point.
Hakubi For Life.
Don't think I can ever get into Slayers. It's a bit too random and old school for my tastes, no offense. I don't really like pure random. I like random in bits tied together with a story narrative and I especially like when something random enhances the story but pure random? Eh, no thanks.
The opening to Gunsmith Cats is so snazzy, wouldn't you guys agree? I love that 70's feel that it has. I need to dig out my one DVD now, its buried in a box somewhere!

Ooh btw, it's kinda surprising the Dirty Pair isn't in this thing.

Uhm. Slayers totally has a narrative and ongoing plot. They have day to day adventures, sure, but there's absolutely a running storyline. You need to watch the series in order.
Its my all time favorite anime series. I watch it at least once a year, all 78 episodes. (Haven't rewatched season 4 yet) I also have most of the manga, all 8 novels tokyopop released, a fair number of artbooks, and 2 original cels.
@Thousand:
Ooh btw, it's kinda surprising the Dirty Pair isn't in this thing.
And which of the two girls would you have picked to leave out? And which decade would you have picked the design from?
Well, Nausicaa is Nausicaa.
Too bad, the poll is hold at Arlong Park, place of ignorance and delusion.
Voted Nausicaa, Rally, and Lina for good measure.
I recognize Ryoko, but didn't vote for her cause 2 of the three Tenchi series I saw weren't very flattering to her or any of the female characters on the show. She was kind of badass in universe.
can you not vote for her?
Usagi is the only heroine I know on there so…
Ryoko Lina Usagi And Aoi get my vote.
@Thousand:
Ooh btw, it's kinda surprising the Dirty Pair isn't in this thing.
I thought the same thing. I would've gone with Kei definitely. I love her fluffy 80's hair in the original!
I promise I won't go crazy. So Excited to see her in this match!

Vote Ryoko! Don't piss off the Space Pirate!
Nausicaa… is leading?
Wait, are we still at Arlong Park.
Well, Nausicaa is Nausicaa.
Too bad, the poll is hold at Arlong Park, place of ignorance and delusion.
You say even though she's currently in the lead.

Hmmm, I'm assuming it IS more than your run-of-the-mill fantasy anime, then. I think that's the one reason I never really watched it. However, it seems interesting, considering its trailers stand out to me on my One Piece DVDs.
I promise I won't go crazy. So Excited to see her in this match!

It does? I remember you saying how it goes from something super wacky to saving the world out of nowhere. Or am I mistaken?:wassat:

Ah yeah…
On another note, I kinda thing Caska is over-rated even though I voted for her. Her fighting and spunk was cool but nothing special for a female heroine. From what I can remember the core of her character pre-retard version was always moaning about Griffith and being raped. Not to say it undermined her scenes with Guts but meh. If anyone could remind me what was so ground-breaking with her?
Honestly, I don't know what Slayers is.
It’s a comedy… except when it’s serious. It’s epic adventure… except when it wanders off to enter a cross-dressing tennis tournament. Lina’s an egotistical, somewhat self-centered bandit killer who blows shit up whenever she’s angry and has earned the unflattering nickname ‘The enemy of all who live’… Except she’s also saved the entire world three or four times simply because it was the right thing to do.
Is she a heroine? An anti-heroine? Jack Bauer in a training bra? I don’t know. Slayers is a series where an episode can start with a knock-down drag-out argument over where to have lunch and end with the cast crossing swords and magic with a pair of demons across the rooftops of the same little village… And none of it feels odd or contrived.
Throw in characters that trade the usual fantasy adventure black and white morality for a riot of color and myriad shades of grey, and the best I can come up with is: Slayers is a slice of life series about a tremendously interesting life, and best of all, it’s always open-ended, so you know all the characters you love are still out there, having more kickass adventures after the final credits roll.
The emotions are genuine, from the comedy to the tears to the happy moments. The drama and escalating conflicts always feel dangerous, even on my 15th rewatch over a decade later.
I think I've watched the last two episodes of season 2 about fifty times, no exageration.
If season 4 or the movies had been better (not a fan of Naga) or it was still running, I'd put it ahead of One Piece. (Once I learn japanese I'm importing the novels tokyopop didn't translate) As is, its absolutely top tier as far as comedy action adventure goes.
@Thousand:
So anime>manga?
They both come from the novels originally. They tell most of the same stories, but overall the anime does it best of the three.

She managed to rise to a high rank in a man's world and showed independance and spirit and loyalty and conflicted emotions. She was a great complex character with human weaknesses.
Oh hells yeah Iceborg, hold up the Negima front!!!

Yeah, that's kinda what I meant about random.
The best thing is when they're laughing around with xellos one minute and then being on opposite sides and remembering that he's stronger then all of them combined.
Slayers is great.

That and Record of Lodoss Wars fall into the Dungeons and Dragons category. Each series has its token party member, its a group going on an adventure, there's dragons, etc. Lina would totally be classified as Chaotic neutral, because she's not entirely evil, but she is greedy and self-centered.
Speaking of which, ever thought about including Deedlit or Pirotess?
!
Vote for the girl with the big ass sword.
Guess it's worth a watch then.
I wonder if FUNi streams it… goes to check
Tenchi In Tokyo… probably the worst of the three series. Still love Ryoko though!
Same, Worse of the three. Universe is the best though:
FGqPbYjD14E
It had one of the best endings and also adds a hint of RyokoXTenchi.
