doesn't influence me at all…
May i ask you how you felt when they were introduced? And why does your view change? Might be interesting…

Well…...it's kinda hard to say since the first time I saw Mr. 2 was in the 4Kids dub (this was before I started watching the original Japanese). That time I just thought "Hey, look! A guy who's a ballerina! That's kinda weird O_O".
Then a little after I started watching the series subbed (which was about two months before the first FUNi dubbed episode aired), my friend told me that Bon Clay was an Okama, and to be honest it suprised me cause that was the first time I heard that. After that, the thought of Bon Clay kinda creeped me out.
But after between Luffy and Bon Clay's reunion and Bon Clay yelling out to Luffy for support during his painful treatment, he really touched my heart and I kinda grew a little admiration towards him .
But back to Okama's in general, Inazuma's was mysterious but not exactly weird or creepy (prolly because he seems to be the normal-est, to me at least). Iva-san's first appearence kinda weirded me out like I said Bon Clay's did, but with each new chapter I started to think these Okama's were pretty sweet.
I mean come on, Inazuma and Iva-san's (mostly Inazuma's) character design, abilitys and personality are both just awsome
and the rest of them are so energetic and inspirational, I just love it ^^
hmm okama means homosexual aka G@Ys in japanese?
hmm okama means homosexual aka G@Ys in japanese?
transsexual, not homosexual.
=crossdressers
He was cool (to me) since alabasta when he decided to fool hina to help the SHs escaping :)
hmm okama means homosexual aka G@Ys in japanese?
Well you're kinda right.
The term itself doesn't EAXACTLY mean "homosexual", it just means "gay" in general
Okama is also the term for "transvestite"
But I think the Okamas in the One Piece world kinda lean towards more to the "transvestite" meaning of the term, cause I don't think they're exactly gay.
Cause when Mr. 2/Bon Clay was first introduced, he did kinda hit on Vivi
@Mugiwara Kaizoku
Although most One Piece Okamas ARE crossdressers, I don't think that's one of the meanings of the word

i hope you speak japanese with that kind of claim, would be new to me if it was that way, but i don't speak japanese, so…
He'd make a cool friend (Bon Clay). But other than that.. I despise such freaks.

Hmmm, well, I thought I got the translation off a note from Episode 103 (subbed by K-F of course)
I just watched the video again (Spider's Cafe Meeting), and the note said, "Okama - Male Transvestite"
Well…...I guess the term does just mean "homosexuality", cause it didn't say it meant "gay" :wassat:
Unrelated note: That rhymed XD

I could understand any other Okamas (Iva-san definatley included), but would that mean you don't like Inazuma? I mean, she's/he's not that much a freak, unless you factor in her/his DF power

but you know that transsexual and homosexual are two different things, right? one is a lifestyle and the other one is a sexual orientation.
and when you say 'gay' do you mean 'joyful' or 'colourful', or do you mean homosexual?
a bit confusing to read your posts.

Well, I don't find them disgusting, but just the idea of it makes me feel uncomfortable.
Can I troll this thread without being accused of flamming (LOL!) homosexuals?
If not then I will say that Okama's arent that bad, I even put on my sisters pants once…as a joke.

No, you're both wrong. Dumb kids.
A transsexual is someone who wants to undertake the physical appearance of the opposite sex and act as they do in a sexual way. More often than not they are also homosexual, but it's not a rule.
A homosexual is just someone who is sexual with people of the same sex.
They practically make them a species in One Piece
anyway i ain't gay but i now respect the okama way
it rhymed laughs like little school girl
gains composure again but all in all Mr. 2 is the man can't get over this vid so touching and cool
xd5xPYcdTHY
It basically is homossexual and that's it. People can be picky, go technical and try to find other meanings, but anyone can see that Oda wants them simply to be gay and that's all. It's Oda, he is a simple man.
About those guys, I find it pretty cool what Oda is doing. Normally you will see people despise gay characters, but Oda makes them so fucking awesome it is hard to even care about it… as it should be! Basically he makes us like them for the characters they are, not for their sexual orientation even though it is written over their faces (kinda what the woman from HP did with Dumbledore. Kinda "Hah! You loved the old guy for years, now shove it: he is gay! So, will you starting hating him now or will keep liking him for the character he became?").
Someone will appear and say "Mr.2 said he would fuck Vivi (or it was Nami?) in her face, he is not gay". Yeah, you never see gay people looking at hot girls and saying "sister, I would SO bang you! Watch out!"... (...) ...
Impossible to respect those perverted things.
How anybody could think a fat guy dressing up as a woman is awesome escapes me.

Because dismissing meaningless, subjective morals such as how people should dress is indeed awesome. One piece is a pirate centered manga so of course there will be themes of freedom and crushing overbearing ideals. Harden your heart or you won't enjoy this series as much as you could be.
I'm gay. :ninja:
16 characters of closetness.

This.
Nobody cares.
How to ruin other people's sarcasm with two words. :ermm:
Back on topic, one aspect I enjoy in One Piece are the character's uniqueness in every personal trait. How there are no flat charecters, every single one of them has a personality of their own.
I was disgusted at the first appearence of Bon Clay
and now i'm even more disgusted
this is my true opinion, and u can't sue me for it

No, and you couldn't sue me for calling you a whole lot of things, but I'm going to have the respect not to say so on an internet forum.
I vehemently support gays, bisexuals, and transsexuals in real life. I go to protests and such and vote accordingly. I could choose to be offended by some of the stereotypes presented in One Piece, but that's rather stupid, especially because overall, okamas are portrayed positively. Irregardless, I enjoy the hell out of it, so it doesn't matter. Oda doesn't go into any fleshy details, so there's no reason to be disgusted; these are just entertaining, eccentric characters that make One Piece so unique and interesting.
I really like how the okamas are some of the happiest and most badass characters around; if it makes people more comfortable with themselves or people around them, I'm pleased, and if it makes people stop being so thickheaded about something completely natural I'm pleased, and if Oda just writes more entertaining manga I'm the most pleased of all.
Is okama transvestite or transexual?
You can be pretty into being a transvestite and be 100% straight.
Although I don't have a problem with any sexual subculture, I'm curious about the literal meaning of the word since it seems fuzzy.
You can see it, in a different way:
they maybe wear clothes of a women because they like women very much, like someone how dress like a superhero on carnival or other festivities
How anybody could think a fat guy dressing up as a woman is awesome escapes me.
That's funny
You said he was alright last you time you talked to me
Plus dude, he's not fat

Pardon me, sir, but you are weird.

I was calling Ivankov fat.
Last time we talked, I was talking about Mr. 2.
I was disgusted at the first appearence of Bon Clay

So you like in the United States huh?
When Mr. 2 showed up I think I was slightly offended or something because he seemed like such a ridiculous sterotype. Mostly because I have lots of friends who are LGBT and, you know, you think of them as just your friends and not as okama or whatever. Whatever goes on in their romantic/private life or whatever gets them off is their own business. What do I care? They don't care about my hetero life why should I give them beef about theirs?
But then Mr. 2 turned out so awesome and Iva and his buddies are just so amazingly super and now I sort of love that Oda made them so obvious because I love the message of how it doesn't matter how you dress/act because what's important is that you're comfortable with yourself and lsdkfjd. <3
Pardon me, sir, but you are weird.
So, what's your point. I'm saying youre making a uneccessary case against Ivankov. People shouldn't like him because he dresses effeminetly? So what? The pope does it too and people still worship him.
No, you're both wrong. Dumb kids.

A homosexual is just someone who is sexual with people of the same sex.
wow, you just blew my mind by saying nothing relevant at all and also stating false statements which don't include gene defects, hormones and the loss of free will…
such a smart geezer you are!
Nothing wrong with either transsexuals or homosexuals, each to his own.
But that doesn't mean i want to look at fat hairy men in ballerina costumes on 19 pages, i'd rather play the "cho aniki" videogames instead (wait, no, i wouldn't).
So i'd say oda did it well and gave his characters more purpose and depth than just being hairy men in females clothes, because that would have been annoying (and tbh i feared that when ivankov was first introduced).
Yeah, cross-desser are not necessarily gay.
I believe the word can mean both, though. I remember in Kuroshitsuji they call a guy in there Okama even though he always dressed as a man (but he is gay).
In Saint Seiya - The Lost Canvas, there is a guy who dresses as a nun and they call him an Okama as well… so here the word is being used to refer to cross-dresser (unless the people are simply calling him gay, I don't know).
When it comes to Oda, I am sure he uses the Okama term as gay and not cross-dresser. I mean, for years the only Okama in OP was Mr.2 and, well, as weird as his clothes can be and even with all that makeup, he never dressed as a woman.
And even though in the Newkamas and in Kamabakka a lot of them dress like woman, Inazuma doesn't (actually, he dress quite normally for a OP character. Doflamingo looks like a flamming faggot compared to him. Even Spandam does.). What pretty much makes 66% of the revelant Okama (100% being Bon, Ina and Iva) not be cross-dressers.

This is why girls should keep their mouths shut. Nothing useful ever comes out anyway.

If this wasn't Jane Doe we were talking about I'd call you a sexist
In other news..Oda inspired other mangaka to use okama.
!

!
To lazy to find anymore, but these are the real failures!
^Sai isn't nearly cool enough to follow the Okama way. He's just a fag
Isn't Sasuke the Okama, and Sai is just gay?
Serious note: Nightmare from Fairy Tail.
No, Sasuke is just fail.
I never had a grudge on homosexuals or transgenders. However, when ODA first introduce Bon Clay… I was like WTF! Ballerina with tons of make up and with freaky scary hairy legs and a swan as a uniform O_O And me being french didn't help at all....
I am glad Oda showed that Bon Clay was a pretty cool guy after all.
You all know that Ivan is based on Tim Curry's character in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, right? Maybe you guys are too young? Go to the local theater that plays it and take part in the audience participation. That is definitely a right of passage.
Whoa… thanks for the trivia ^^ gonna add him to the celebrity cosplayers
