@Demon:
I just checked it out, they appear to be completely ignoring the speech quirk, and I'm very VERY glad for it.
They could have chosen an ass-backwards way to do it like the Scanlators, and it would have looked just as dumb.
Just because a certain speech quirk isn't honored isn't a bad thing, there are TONS of other speech quirks that even the scanlators and fansubbers ignored and/or missed entirely.
Example: Bon-chan's Stereotypical effeminate gay quirk (Notice how he ends most of his sentences with "yo")
Example 2: Usopp's speech style shifts completely when he becomes Sogeking. Usually he uses "Ore" for "I/we". When he becomes Sogeking, he starts using "Boku". Also, his speech takes on a more respectful dialect, IE he begins calling everyone "Kun".
You didn't see them randomly start giving Usopp a snooty accent or anything did you?
@Charagon:
Usopp/Sogeking is a completely different scenario. That's not even close to a valid comparison. You wouldn't give anybody doing 'polite' speak an accent. At most you would simply avoid using contractions.
"I'm gonna take down all of 'em. Don't try to stop me."
"I am going to take them all down. Do not try to stop me."
In Rin's defense here, her examples are the exact same thing.
What we are dealing with here is different examples of how Japanese speaking characters change their personal pronouns for "I" and "you", among other definitive and unique ways individual characters end their sentences, something that would also be very difficult to reflect in English. After all, we have very little alternatives for "I" and "you", so it's hard to reflect it at all.
Certainly, the example you provided is a way to write equivalent English for a character that speaks using more polite terms and would work for Sogeking, but the matter of honorifics like "kun" are also quite hard to find a replacement for.
In short, FUNi made the right call and left it out, at the risk of looking stupid. Since Ivan only uses changes to personal pronouns and doesn't have a full-blown accent, it's the best way to handle this.
I do wonder how the dub will handle this though.
