Just got back from seeing it. I gotta say it was pretty damn good. The basic story itself isn't exactly original (yeah, there's no way it should win best original screenplay) but I believe it was beautifully executed.
! So yeah, typical peaceful race vs. oppressive race with the man-on-the-inside story, and definitely more than a few similarities between it and Dances With Wolves and Pocahontas (hell, there's even a Coco'um character). But possible plagiarism aside, I think it was a beautifully told story with some great characters and great visuals.
! Though I was kind of indifferent about him at first, I really did come to like Jake Sully and even sympathized with his character. Neytiri was a great character too. She provided as an excellent gateway into the world of the Na'vi and I liked the relationship between her and Jake. The rest of the characters were good as well. We had a great villain and a good supporting cast, though some of them may not have been entirely necessary.
! I must say that the world that James Cameron created was magnificent. Spectacular landscape and animal designs and awesome CGI to back it up. Though some of it was a bit hard to swallow for me, in particular that whole hair-bonding thing (jeez, some species have all the luck).
! As for the story, yeah, it was preachy as hell, but they were preaching to the right choir (as far as I'm concerned). They didn't exactly have a very optimistic view of humanity, which bothered me a little, but there was also that bit of a ray of light, so I guess it doesn't bother me too much. And as I said before, cliched, but beautifully executed.
! I'm also glad the movie had a more-or-less happy ending. With a movie like this there's plenty of potential for tragedy, but everything that happened seemed about right to me. As I said before in the FFXIII thread, I'm really getting sick of all that depressing shit.
! I also had the (mis)fortune of seeing this movie in 3D. Now, having never seen an entire movie in 3D (not to my recollection) I must say that, despite it being pretty neat at the start, it really didn't seem necessary and it left me with a bit of headache about 2/3 of the way through the movie. Also, I already wear glasses so, you know, that makes things difficult.
@Kairouseki:
I was sort of thrown off guard by it, I mean basically
! plugging themselves in to the planet to communicate with it..
Dunno about genitals but, yeah, it was like a hairy mix between a nervous system (or spine) and an USB .
! While the planet itself was a big brain. But I would hasitate to call it a genius idea because I'm sure someone, somewhere has already written a story with a similar consept. :sideways:
Cameron said the story is basicly a coctail of his favourite sc-fi novels. Not the actual quote but something along like that. Wouldn't be surprising if he has read Call Me Joe at some point during his life. While this Poul Anderson isn't up there with Heinlein, Asimov or Clarke he isn't either exactly a secret author nobody hasn't heard of.
Well, as far as I know, those "extensions" are how they mate, according to the missing "sex scene"…but I'm not sure if that's just the "spiritual" mating aspect or they actually pass genetic material that way as well. I mean, they are still covering their groin area for some reason, lol.
The battle was also awesome.
Well I doubt anyone wants to hear what I have to say but I wrote a review of this film with two words to define it:
! It Stunk.

I guess I'm not going to see this after-all.
We called up the local IMAX at around 4:00 PM for tickets tomorrow, with showings at 8:00 PM and 2:00 PM. About 50 seats total. We spent about fifteen minutes deliberating and when we called back, all the tickets were sold.
I mean fudge that, some people are just sick.
I agree that movie definitely made me sick.

Watched the movie yesterday and i've to say expect the visual experience this film was boring.
Is there anybody in this thread, who made or who has the intention to make a list of all the plagiarisms in this film.
If so here are my thoughts
! * i thought the mechas were a tinier version of the matrix ones
And btw this film was so damn predictable:
! * The first time the skeleton of this big bird was shown, i knew it that Mr. Jake Si(u)lly would ride this thing.
It was posted earlier of where the Avatars were from, the short story "Call Me Joe".
There goes the Golden Globes. Next Oscars.
Now the film has made $1.6 billion worldwide and its only a matter of time before it crushes Titanic's old record.

I can't believe Harry can imitate American accents so well. My attempt at Briton sounds so fake.
lol'd to death, thanks for that!

Also the game One Must Fall 2097.

Whoa whoa, wait a minute. Harry isn't American?!
No, he's British.
No, he's British.
Wow, I would never have guessed.
Anyway, kudos to Avatar for winning big at the Gloden Globes

Wait, what?
Where were these sympathetic/likeable characters?
Where was ANY chemistry?
Every single character in this movie would be hard for me to describe as two-dimensional, because without exception, they didn't even have that much personality.
Wow every week it seems another group of people come out and show books which Avatar ripped off. This time from a series of Russian books by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky called "the world of Noon" these books are not unknown and were very popular in Russia. The similarities include the planet(both are named Pandora and are both described as tropical) as well as the huminoid aliens the Na'vi or in the russian books the Nave.

Hey That One Guy Was A Soldier???
Totally Ripped Off Gijoe!!!!!!!!!
It was posted that Avatar ripped of Call me Joe, after researching this a little bit i found another wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_%28Poul_Anderson%29
Poul Anderson wrote other books with some funny names:
Tales of the Flying Mountains (1970)
The Avatar (1978)I really hope that the comment i read somewhere that Cameron said that the story is original isn't true, or is it?
Avatar owned in teh Golden Globes.
Avatar came out in the cinema, so it ripped off every movie ever.
OMG, a sci-fi movie uses ideas from decades of sci-fi novels! Oh noes!
I may not have enjoyed the film as much as I hoped I would, but at least I was FREE TO SEE IT REGARDLESS O_o

You say this almost as if it were a good thing.

AVATAR CLAIMS ITS FIRST VICTIM! bares teeth

True Lies wouldn't have taken 11 days.
Wow. If Avatar kill someone, could it also make someone narcoleptic? It sure did a number on me.

I'm not saying it's a good thing, I'm just saying it's really not that surprising.
Hmm, but that's some story though. I've never heard of a movie killing anyone (except for The Ring)
I'm not saying it's a good thing, I'm just saying it's really not that surprising.
Yes, I was just busting you. I'm sorry how that came through on the internet.

I havent. Dont feel like paying 10 dollars to watch Dances with Wolves in 3D.
i haven't either
nothing will replace Davy Jones in the motion capture place in my heart, and certainly not a bunch of creepy blue cat people. Furries are so JR HIGH
plus i dont want to die!!!!
I love the avatar movie. It is awesome.
I havent. Dont feel like paying 10 dollars to watch Dances with Wolves in 3D.
But do you feel like paying 5 dollars for Dances with Wolves in 2-D on DVD? That is the real question.
Also, I don't remember DWW having mecha fighting dragons on an air fortress. I might have blanked out on that sequence.
^That sequence is in DwW's DVD extras.
It's one of those secret dvd features. You have to click on the wolf with the buckshot in its head.
there. its done. leave it be now.
it's so beautiful i want to die
yeah, but the cgi is really blatant. his skintone doesn't match the lighting of the rest of the scene at all.
yeah, but the modeling on that indian woman is top notch!!!!!
