Fantastic Mr. Fox looks so scary.
Anyways. Does anyone know when this is being released in the UK? Going from Bolt's release in the US and UK I'm guessing Feb or March time?

It comes out here on the 5th of February.
And Fantastic Mr Fox was awesome.
So you did end up getting to work on it?
no
Usually, claymation doesn't (I enjoyed Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline)
FMF is puppets, not so much clay

if you havent seen it then go see it or i hate you
There's one thing that I want to know before I watch this movie: Is the villain of this movie really that fuckin' good? I've heard a lot people saying that he's one of the best villains Disney ever created, If not the best.
So, is he really that good?

He's underdeveloped, but very frikken suave. He is one of the best villains so far. Oh and you can't help but love the bloody shadow he has.
Now, I'm not saying that all of these are classic films (though Fantastic Mr. Fox certainly is and, for me, is probably the best animated film released this year), but the following animated films were released in 2009:
Coraline
Monsters vs. Aliens
Up
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
9
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Astro Boy
A Christmas Carol
Planet 51
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Princess and the FrogI feel like I'm forgetting something even now, but I can't think as to what it was.
PONYO!!!
Hmm, beyond that I think we got everything. Hmm, actually I'm kind of mad at myself because I've only seen 5 of those 12 movies. XD
@iSheep:
So, is he really that good?
He's voiced by Keith David.

Half the reason I'm going to watch this is Dr Facilier.
Saw the movie today. LOVED IT!
Yes, Dr. Facilier is awesome.
There hasn't been a magic based villian this bad ass since Maleficiant.
I'm sorry, but Jafar is weak sauce compared to Facilier and Maleficiant. Wishing to become a genie? Is he really that freaking stupid? At least the other two were defeated because someone unexpected got in their way.
Awww, what the hell? It only made 12 million it's 2nd weekend? Damn Avatar.
Get more people to see this, guys! This film can't afford to fizzle out!!
im seeing it soon, it looks pretty rad.
My mother didn't get to see it, so I'm most likely going with her so I can see it again. :3
Also, my sister bought the CD today so she could have it FOR HERSELF as a Christmas stocking stuffer. Yeah, my sister is crazy but awesome. The entire day, the two of us had the hardest time resisting the temptation to open the CD and blast "Almost There" throughout the house.
We've been singing that song all day. For me, it's been that song, "Dig a Little Deeper" and "Friends on the Other Side".
Going to see it on Christmas Eve, but I heard that
! Ray dies
Is that true?

You sure you wanna know? If so…

! Yeah, he does.
Goddamnit.

I don't think it's just Avatar; the first weekend, it only made $24 million; a 50% drop isn't that unusual in the film industry. It seems to be doing fairly well for itself at the weekday box office though and the per screen average is pretty good. So there's going to be plenty of repeat business and it should stay in theaters for a pretty good while yet.
Worst case scenario, the film will break even, which is not that hard to do at this point as it's already made about almost half of its production costs without even opening overseas yet. Figure in DVD sales and it'll make money.
I blame all the commercials adverising the firefly's butt instead of Keith David.
I finally saw the Movie today and it was awesome it has great 2D animation
Dr.Facilier is the Greatest Disney Villain Ever :D
! Too bad Ray died but it did help make Dr.Facilier awesome by killing off a character
My songs are Dr.Facilier's song and the end credits song by Ne-Yo
My favorite parts are Naveen being crush by a Book twice XD,Louise's Flashback XD,and Everything with Dr.Facilier :D
Went today to see it for the second time and holy shit guys, I just realized something
! What Ray was talking to wasn't stars
! >!
! They're fireflies. Fireflies that, uh… got stuck up on that big bluish- black thing.

It hasn't opened overseas yet? Ah.
Yeah, I guess I'm worrying too much. But it would be nice if it got an extra oomph to convince the higher-ups that 2D is where it's at.
@"LC" Lapen: I just love it when people find inter-Disney movie connections. Great find!
I've seen this movie three times now! (once on the opening date in Hollywood, second time at a Cast Member only screening and a third time with my younger brother/wife). Each time it just gets better and each time I catch myself humming the songs for hours! It's very impressive that Disney can produce such quality material after so many years. I had little nitpicks here and there but all-in-all, it is now nestled safely atop my favorite Disney animated features of all time.
What's even better is my wife has never been a Disney fan. She typically finds the 2D movies to be annoying and isn't fond of the songs. She saw Princess and The Frog; fell in love with it immediately! I was so happy that she adored the movie so much. Even she considered it Disney's most triumphant piece in history.
It hasn't opened overseas yet? Ah.
Not yet; I'm not sure when it opens either, but hitting nearly fifty million dollars stateside is a good sign for it. Its production budget was apparently only 105 million while I'm guessing that the advertising budget wasn't all that big either.
Yeah, I guess I'm worrying too much. But it would be nice if it got an extra oomph to convince the higher-ups that 2D is where it's at.
I'm not sure that anything short of The Lion King level revenue would accomplish that at this point seeing as how consistently turning a profit on its films wasn't enough to save the Orlando studio. Of course, that ignores the fact that that particular film came after one of Disney's best stretches ever while this film is the first 2D Disney release in five years and the first fairy tale in about a decade and a half.
True, true.
I wonder how the Tiana merchandise is doing . . . . .
From Wikipedia (not the best source, but hey):
The Princess and the Frog will be supported by a wide array of merchandise leading up to and following the film's release. Although Disney's main marketing push was not set to begin until November 2009, positive word-of-mouth promotion created demand for merchandise well in advance of the film. Princess Tiana costumes were selling out prior to Halloween 2009, and a gift set of Tiana-themed hair care products from Carol's Daughter sold out in seven hours on the company's website. Other planned merchandise includes a cookbook for children and even a wedding gown. Princess Tiana was also featured a few months before the release in the Disney On Ice: Celebrations show.
True, true.
I wonder how the Tiana merchandise is doing . . . . .
My wife works on Main Street at Disneyland, Anaheim. Her and I went to go buy some Tiana merchandise after the Cast Member screening of the movie. It was later at night so we got to see what their stock was at the end of the day; almost empty. Everything was selling out really fast in the park and even at "World of Disney" on Downtown Disney. People are eating the merchandise up :)
Not yet; I'm not sure when it opens either, but hitting nearly fifty million dollars stateside is a good sign for it. Its production budget was apparently only 105 million while I'm guessing that the advertising budget wasn't all that big either.
105M means Disney used slave labour. I can't imagine any hand-animated animated movie costing that little in this day and age, when CGI movies routinely exceed that and they're so ubiquitous and easy to obtain CGI for movies.
For example Ataque de Panico involved 1996 CGI and cost only around $300 USD to make.
i'm not much of an expert in this, but i know they did the animation by hand then transfered it to computers for coloring, and from there on it's pretty straight forewards
CGI always has to adapt and develop in order to accomodate the story, and then there's a whole tech crew that deals with debugging and making sure the machines work the way they're supposed to. though hand drawn animation is easier, CGI is tons more complicated.
I'M SORRY TO SAY THIS EVERYONE BUT THAT MOVIE WAS GOD-TIER
! It was so good, it's ridiculous. I was bugging out in the theatre during Louis' dance number, and the other songs were good too (I think the worst was probably the old woman's, which is a compliment because her song was good too).
! I don't think this movie is a "reboot" of the Disney animation industry, I feel it's a culmination of everything they've learned thus far - both the good (of the 1990's), and the bad (of the early 2000's).
! This film beats out most of the 1990's films for me, nostalgia considered in the weighing. It was original, it was zany (Hercules zany, with a dash of The Emperor's New Groove for good measure) and most of all DEVELOPED.
! For one I felt Navin falling for Tiana was VERY WELL DONE and totally logical, fitting with the theme of food. "A way to a man's heart is his stomach"? Sure enough after feeding Navin he started looking at her other qualities and realizing how useless he was, which was really awesome (I cheered).
! Tiana falling for Navin was perhaps less believable, especially since there was never a real challenge to the "working hard' ethos of hers. Sure, we saw why Navin's party life was bad, but why Tiana's was bad was never weighed strongly against.
! On Facilier. I thought he was a great villain and was legitimately menacing, I mean his powers and "friends" were indeed intimating, and I like how he gave off a charismatic, cool confident attitude at first but we got to see the behind the scenes knuts and bolts of his stage act in his dialogue with Lawrence.
! I also admired the "on-screen death" but the last minute goodbye to the firefly, it was much more gruesome to hear his squish then see his last moments.
! Facilier getting taken away by his friends was a good end, but I don't like how he was defeated. It seemed silly that for a guy of his power, everything was invested in that amulet alone. The voodoo lady, for example, gave off an aura of power and recognized Facilier, which gave a sense of a respect of equals or rivals.
! But that Facilier's entire power crux was based on that trinket, seemed like an Achilles Heel - it was an unglorified way for a very stylish, sinister villain to be undone. The Achilles Heel thing works when the villain opens him/herself up to the vulnerability with some sort of self flaw (like arrogance) - how Ursula grew huge sized so Erik could drive a ship in her, or Maleficent turning into a dragon so she could do battle directly.
! For Facilier it just seemed like bad luck. I know there has to be some weakness for seemingly powerless heroes/heroines to defeat an all-powerful villain, but it still felt sort of cheap he get axed like that.
! To compare, I felt Jafar's defeat was probably the perfect way for a Disney villain to go. He and Aladdin's final battle take the cake as one of the most satisfying confrontations, and I know it's a lot expecting that from this movie, but I felt Facilier was a good enough villain (the best since Hades) to earn a proud battle like that.
! My rating? Full and a half marks. Really, a fudging awesome piece of work, this.
saw it again
DR FACILIER HUFF HUFF
HIS FACIAL ANIMATION SO EXPRESSIVE HUFF HUFF
HIS HAND ANIMATION IS SO COOL HUFF HUFF
ARE YA….. REAAAAAAAAADY HUFFFF HUFFFF HUFFFF
also, i think i spotted an easter egg
the politician 'big daddy' was talking to when he was in the toga looked suspiciously like the lawyer in the incredibles
and wasn't the lawyer originally based off of someone in the first place?
and wasn't the lawyer originally based off of someone in the first place?
What with the name (Rick Dicker) and the face, it's almost certainly Richard Milhous Nixon. I thought the character actually was Nixon the first time I saw him.

About Facilier.
! His power wasn't FOCUSED on that crux.
! The issue was that if he lost that crux, he would lose the trust of the 'friends on the other side' and thus they would kill him. They gave him that crux as a way to say, "Here is our end of the deal, now feed us some souls".
! I think all his other magical objects came from them too, but they came from successful deals.
! He made a deal that he failed to succeed the moment Tiana broke the amulet. So once he failed, the othersiders decided to just devour his soul since he fucked up. He promised a dozen souls with the amulet.
! Truth: Facilier would have succeeded had Lawrance not let Naveen out.
Dear American Parents,
There is a good chance during the recent past that you might have complained about the current status of today's youth. This is, of course, your fault. No doubt you protest such a charge, but there is ample proof. This can be seen by the box office returns for the past week that show that the dreadfully awful Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel has already made as much money as The Princess and the Frog. There can be no other explanation than that you paid for your children to see this film and, as such, the continued deterioration of our popular culture can be laid firmly at your feet. To add further insult, a successful sequel damns us to yet another one that will probably also outperform another marvelous film at the box office.
In conclusion, I hate you all. I except, of course, any parents who spared their children this monstrosity, but I fear those are in the minority. Again, hate.
Sincerely,
Michael Stakely
ARGH, STILL HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MOVIE.
Three-day weekend coming up, no parties or dinners or relatives to visit. I AM THERE, MUST SEE THE PRETTY.
…How did I know that stupid "Squeakquel" would make huge money? facepalm
Its a long held belief of mine that how good the PREVIOUS movie in a franchise is dictates a large chunk how well the next one does, regardless of the quality of said outing. (See Pirates 2, Spiderman 3, Shrek 3. None of them as good as the movie that came before them, but after the previous had stewed around on DVD for a while and built it up, it got more people to go. And Dark Knight wouldn't have done as well if Batman Begins hadn't been so solid. Etc.)
Its been a while since Disney released a good 2-D Film. There was Lilo and Stitch in 2002… but counterbalancing that in the last decade have been Fantasia 2000, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Home on the Range, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimeron (Not a Disney, but it was 2-D), not great company. There just hasn't been a good 2-D track record in some time.
Also... I still blame the terrible commercials. 3 fart jokes in 30 seconds and a redneck firefly do not a good advertisment make.
I've noticed that now, in week 3, they've started doing a COMPLETLY DIFFERENT commercial that shows off the magic and the villain and the disney dresses and the action and the feeling of Disney classic, and this NEW commercial is making me interested in going, but... its the approach they should have had all along.
This can be seen by the box office returns for the past week that show that the dreadfully awful Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel has already made as much money as The Princess and the Frog.
Maybe it's true what the Disney folk are saying, "kids only want to see 3D animated films these days".
When Chicken Little came out I was hoping it would tank, but apparently that was not meant to be.
Wait a minute, are you saying you still haven't seen Princess and the Frog robby? …Well, I know you're busy, what with working in the comic book industry and all, but do yourself a favor and make time to see it. It may not blow you away, but it will be an interesting watch at least.
As for Alvin and the Chipmunks already making as much money as Princess and the Frog. Yeah, that's pretty sad considering it came in third at the box office (Princess and the Frog isn't even in the top 5 this week).
Wait a minute, are you saying you still haven't seen Princess and the Frog robby?
Yup. Haven't seen Avatar or Sherlock Holmes either. I've almost gone the last two weekends, but ticket prices are too high and I went way over my monthly budget with X-mas stuff and I haven't been able to coordinate with friends. Hopefully if schedules work out I'll be able to see it this weekend.
Plus, I hardly ever go to the movies anyway. I just have a hard time shilling out 10$ for a one time experiance (not counting potentially getting a hugely overpriced drink) when I can wait a few months and get the dvd for 7$. The big screen experiance with the crying babies, talking children, cold rooms, lines, string of commercials, and rude people usually ain't worth it to me without some friends along to make it more fun before and after.

My parents + family friend were basically the only people in the theatre, don't underestimate the crowds of a movie that's been out for a few weeks.
Also, if $10 is a lot, you should pirate more video games or find more free online entertainment to free up those funds.
$7 for a DVD is something that comes after nearly a year of being out, not a few months. DVDs sell for half price at certain stores in their initial weeks, then lose 30% of that value after a few months. To go to less than half means you have to wait a long, long time.
Also…I find movies are a better experience than DVDs, because I usually only watch a DVD once, and prefer the atmosphere of a theatre to the "discomfort" of my own home.
Sadly, I think advertising is what is winning out for Alvin and the Chipmunks. I haven't been able to escape constant commercials and previews and posters everywhere for it, yet I have yet to see a single one for Princess other than on the internet.

All the more reason to not rush out and see something the first week.

When I can OWN something for less than the price of seeing it once, AND share it with my friends, (or family) its a big difference. If I drag even 1 friend to the theatre, thats 20$. And if I drag 3 friends to the theatre, (my usual posse) that's 40$ being spent at the movie (not all by me granted) plus concessions which can be another 10-20$, depending on if anyone gets popcorn or if everyone gets drinks or whatnot.
I get the dvd, not only can I watch it in the comfort of my own home as many times as I want, (and ususally get a commentary track and bonus footage) I can share it with those same friends for free. 40-50$ is a lot more than 7$.

DVDs come out like, 4 months after a theatre run nowadays, and hit blockbuster. And after a month or so there, they hit the discount table where its "3 for 20", or sometimes even "5 for 20" if you wait long enough. On average, about 6 months after a theatre release I can get a movie for 7 bucks. I just got Star Trek and Ice Age 3 the other day, and they were both summer movies. I also picked up Bolt, which is older, but I didn't enjoy it any more or less for not seeing it sooner.
I've learned patience at my old age of 27, I don't need to see things as soon as they come out anymore, and I just don't get much out of the theatre experiance, particularly when I have a large screen and surround sound at home anyway. (Not to mention if I want to to get a drink at the theatre. They charge like 5 bucks!)
Sadly, I think advertising is what is winning out for Alvin and the Chipmunks. I haven't been able to escape constant commercials and previews and posters everywhere for it, yet I have yet to see a single one for Princess other than on the internet.
Near as I can tell, their commercials mostly aired just… on the Disney channel. And as I keep noting, the commercials P&tF DID have... were really bad and offputting. (Fart joke, fart joke, redneck joke, fart joke). If it weren't for all the positive response its recieving in here, I'd assume it was another travesty like Home on the Range, based on the commercials.
The chipmunks commericals are also horrendous, but thats hitting the same audience as the first movie anyway, and they AREN'T as hideous as the ones for the first movie.

You're not spending all of that $40-50, it's spread out among your friends, but you're gaining the benefit of having all your friends there. Seems like a fair trade to me.
I get a lot more from the theatre experience, even when I'm by myself alone in the threatre ( ;_; ) than I do from a DVD. Bonus footage ceased to be a novelty not long after DVDs came out, it's rare to see something on them that you wouldn't find on a Finding Nemo DVD.
I also rarely re-watch DVDs, because I have so much anime, manga, computer games and forums at my fingertips. It's usually more fun to get out of my house and walk to the big screen than to walk to the living room and pop open the DVD player.
@robbybedfart:
I also picked up Bolt, which is older, but I didn't enjoy it any more or less for not seeing it sooner.
Gonna insult Bolt fans right here and now by saying it's not exactly a must-see movie, but that's beside the point. :o

That reminds me, I saw G-Force in Raley's when I was getting my schnapps, I wonder what Ubiq will say when that movie's "squeak-quel" outstrips The Snow Witch's box office gross in a few years time. :V
Wow, your group must eat a lot.
At the theatre one drink costs 5 bucks, one hot dog cost 4, and a thing of popcorn costs 7 or so. If anybody gets anything at all, even just drinks, it hits a high price pretty damn quick. Theatres charge crazy ammounts for the food.
You're not spending all of that $40-50, it's spread out among your friends, but you're gaining the benefit of having all your friends there. Seems like a fair trade to me.
The point is, a lot of money is being spent all around on the experiance. You shouldn't need to spend money to hang out with friends, nor should you need a theatre experiance as an excuse to get together.
Bonus footage ceased to be a novelty not long after DVDs came out, it's rare to see something on them that you wouldn't find on a Finding Nemo DVD.
I… don't quite understand your point. Its rare to find bonus features on a dvd that you don't already find on a dvd?
Near where I live, there's the equivalent of a 99c store movie theater where even the snacks cost as much as the tickets. The only drawback is that it shows three month old movies not the latest stuff but I don't mind, I can see movies that would have been too much trouble to see in normal theaters. Also, I can see the really good movies of a few months ago again in theaters. Right now they're showing up and I gotta see it again X3

Amen to that. That Chipmunks movie shouldn't have made a dime.
