I recall something like that from when he was talking with Ryūken and Ryūken was surprised that Isshin got his Shinigami powers back. So that could mean that a. They sealed his powers and then he was kicked out of SS for some reason or b. He quit being a Shinigami to stay with Ichigo's mom and got stripped off his powers. Hmmm… Any other ideas? I'll go search for the page with Isshin's and Ryūken's conversation to make sure about that.

My guess is that Isshin was the Kenpachi 110 years ago (The Kenpachi before the guy Zaraki killed). Shinji makes a comment about him being a lazy bastard and he's the only captain that doesn't show up for Urahara's induction.
That's my guess, anyway.

What would make more sense to me would be him going to earth to do some work, maybe like Rukia did in the beginning of the series(you know when was cool to watch bleach) and there he met somehow Urahara and also the love of his life, he decides to stay on earth, Urahara does something to hide Isshin's power, and 20 years later when they need his help, Bam, he gets his powers back.

What if Isshin is from squad zero? All members of that squad are captain-level. Isshin might have been removed from squad zero for some reason. And this gave way for Hikifune, the female captain, to get promoted to squad zero 110 years ago.
Edit: I just realized it's unclear when did Isshin come to the real world? If it's not 110 years ago, then my whole point is invalid. Don't know if it's ever stated in the manga when did he come to the real world. Also, Ishida's father seems to have seen Isshin as a shinigami before, so it may not really be as far as 110 years ago.

well i knew ichigo would end up fighting aizen and to be honest this means he'll be the only one to fight him because he's the only one strong enough which is good so is not so bad…. anyways i'm pissed kenpachi's the only one fighting i was looking forward to a team battle to bring yammy down (although kenpachi is my favorite character it just would have been cool to see an oz like team battle, except it wouldn't be as good)

Most of the other Captains in FKT (except the ones that had been around 100 years) were clueless about the Vaizard, though. Komamura and Toshiro didn't have a clue who they were. Ichigo was recruited by them, so he doesn't count. Unless Isshin was specifically assigned to seek them out, I doubt he'd just stumble upon info about them unless he knew who they were 100 years ago.

Shinji didn't recognize Isshin's spiritual pressure when the latter showed to fight Grand Fisher so him being the previous "Kenpachi" is doubtful.
I'm leaning towards the Squad 0 thing personally. I mean maybe Isshin was one of the original Gotei 13 captains who was promoted long before the Turn Back the Pendulum flashback? If that is the case, the only active captains now who would know of him would be Yamamoto, Unohana, Kyoraku and Ukitake.

Rukia probably would have recognized him if he'd been one of the Thirteen Captains seeing as how twenty years isn't that long ago in the Soul Society and a Captain taking off to parts unknown that recently would still be fairly big news. Isshin being in the Zero Division is a lot more likely seeing as how he doesn't seem a good fit for the Kido Corps or the Stealth Corps. Of course, there's always a chance that he might have been like Ikkaku and was a pretty strong fighter content to stay in the Third Seat or lower because he wasn't interested in being a Captain or Lieutenant.

But IT being placed in the left shoulder suggests that he is not a captain and IT being similar to what a captain wear may suggest that he is at par with the captains. Makes sense that he might actually be a royal guard after all. Royal guards are just ordinary members of squad zero. They can't be technically called as captains.

You act like this is the only way for Isshin to find out about them. As Gabbe said, Isshin could just aswell have learned about it from Urahara which is pretty likely considering that they seem to trust each other.

The thing you need to be aware of is that this is Bleach after all. A manga where the plot exactly follows the meaning of the title. So of course in such a story a future suprise factor such as the official spelling of Harribel's name would be considered a major spoiler.

This just won the thread. And the best ending I can see for this series is Ichigo vs Kubo's plotkai+haxxeye. At least have Kubo admit that he's been trolling his fans since SS ended. I can see the last chapters… Aizen gets to the king's place, Kubo is the king, Kubo kills Aizen as if he's fodder, for no real reason Kubo attacks Ichigo, Ichigo goes Super Vizard 3, Kubo responds w/ plotkai, Ichigo pulls Super Vizard 4 out of his ass w/o even showing us how Super Vizard 3 was better than Ichigonator, Kubo reveals his haxxeye, Kishi enters and wins the battle by sueing Kubo for copyright infringement except Ichigo stabs him a second later... I'd almost enjoy this just for being so bad... And for seeing two of Jump's worst mangaka get owned
