even that old grandma marine can fight, I doubt Sengoku can't lift a finger…... Whitebeard did say he and Garp are the few old time marines during Roger's time.....that says something about Sengoku.........
Can Fleet-Admiral Sengoku fight?

Nice point referring to the old woman, lol.
-
A water logia.. so when he turns into his logia form, it cancels his DF powers.. yeah.
Or maybe he's a fish zoan.
-
Sengoku has the power to hear the voice of all things, now that Gold Roger died the fruit was restored to the world, Sengoku ate it. The person, or should I say animal, that gives out the orders on how to run the world is the goat, and seagull.
Plain and Simple.
-
Maybe because he fought against Roger so many times, and clearly any man who can fight on that level has to be an absolute monster. I hold fast to a view that i have held a long time that Garp was an Admiral at some stage. Plus there has to be a reason behind just why he is called "The hero of the Marines". He's a marine Legend.
Also, Sengoku has the water logia imo. It makes sense, him being the head of the marines and all. That is all good day. :ninja:
While it's turn Garp did great things, it's still very possible that the admirals are stronger then him. It feels like it works within the story for a wild card like Garp to have one or more characters that can defeat him soundly. Plus, the admirals are logias while Garp is a super strong human, so they have that advantage over him. Maybe Sengoku too.
And for certain people, yes of course Garp is strong. But I think it makes more sense for these people to be stronger then him. The sad fact is the nature of his encounters with Gold Roger, while surely epic, are up to speculation right now.

As far as we know. He could be an alien.
He could also have a DF.
-
I do not believe this is the logic, what it is, is that the elder generation is weakened by age while the new generation is getting stronger. I'm not saying there are people who are so amazingly strong but that isnt the theme of shonen.
-

Maybe. But as far as we know he's a super strong human with no more ability to hit a logia then any other man. Plus, I'd think that idea would be supported by the fact that he's a vice admiral, even if he did great things and is a great marine, it's the admirals that are the marine's superpower.
Do I really have to argue that the Admirals are stronger then Garp? That seems strange to me. No, I don't believe that they are cooler or better characters then Garp, but in terms of relative strength it just makes sense.
Also, why is "he might have a DF" relevant? Unless it's a very specific DF it still wouldn't matter against a logia.
-

I agree that the new generation coming to power is a popular theme in shounen, but I wouldn't use that to support old people being weak..
Jiraya
Yama-Jii
WhitebeardEtc..
-
Still think Garp got demoted due the adopting ace affaire. The relationship Roger and Garp had was of mutual respect due the many battles, Garp wasn't as strong as roger, but he came very close.
I think that from the guys that currently are fighting in the war, the 3 strongest are Whitebeard, Sengoku and Garp
-
@Mister:

Agreed. Sengoku was an admiral before so I see no reason why he wouldn't be really strong. For some reason I can't imagine Garp being stronger than sengoku though.
-
I guess I can post my theory here too.
-
Lol sengoku is smarter than whitebeard and has lots of information obviously he does not want a hit list on his head so he said white beard has the power to destroy the earth to get everyone to kill him faster but therearee secretly to people with ther power one being sengoku and the other being whitebeard and they call him buddha because he never fights because his power is so destructive and only to be used as a last resort.
-

wow, that'd actually be pretty broken. Sengoku having the pirate king's DF.
I still willing bet he fights all hand to hand and is diesel under all his marine attire.. and has that master haki stuff..
-
Ya know, for a guy that should be able to fight he sure has stood around and done nothing for awhile. I have to wonder if that has something to do with Sengoku's power and this plan in the latest manga chapter.
-

So has whitebeard and many of the other powerful people in the war because there are so many people in this war Oda can'y fit them all in so he just leaves them out.
Think about lots of mangas and movies or tv shows the strongest always wait until the enemies are beaten or weakend by the weaker men.
-
So has Garp. We haven't seen Garp fight either. Can he fight? Throwing cannon balls means you're strong now? Getting slashed by an axe while sleeping means you're strong?

The problem with this statement is that we actually saw a glimpse of what Whitebeard can do. Sengoku? Nothing.
-
This is one piece. Of course he can fight. When has there been a villain, with the exception of Spandam, who couldn't? Okay, Bellamy was a joke, but still. He thought he was a fighter.
I find it hard to believe that the big bad of the Marines is just a strategist. Actually, wasn't his strategy on how to kill Ace (which was their real goal, right? eliminate the pirate king's decedents?) so far has consisted of broadcasting his execution, waiting for weeks, then getting all set up for everything except submarines, and then putting his plan B into action, which is… more waiting? Which WB has apparently seen through, too.
Seriously, for a "master strategist" he isn't doing too well IMO.

If throwing cannon balls repeatedly so hard that they break the sound barrier doesn't mean Garp is strong, I'm not sure what you think qualifies as strong.

What sound barrier was broken when he threw the cannon balls?
I must've missed that were they all mach 3 or did some reach mach 4 and 5?
-
Maybe he can pull a Rogue and absorb other peeps' powers, and hasn't done it yet because it would only weaken his army as long as they still stand.
Would be pretty cool to see him fight a normal Luffy as rubber Sengoku though. Though, Luffy would have some trouble beating that without a weapon.
Until he develops HEAT VISION! -

The cannon balls were thrown faster than a cannon could fire them. Assuming cannonballs in One Piece can move at the speed of artillery fire, then cannons can fire cannonballs at about 3600 mph (5760 km/h), according to this reference. Sound travels at around 770 mph (1230 km/h) at sea level. We don't really know how well-developed the cannons in One Piece are, so this is just a guess.
Scratch that, we don't know the speed of sound in One Piece, or the density of metals, or the coefficient of air resistance, thus we don't know anything. But the picture of Garp throwing cannonballs seemed to place atmospheric distortions where the cannonballs leave Garps hands.

LOL you should chime in on the physics discussion in the chapter thread.

Well Whitebeard did say he needed Buggy and his minions if they want to "win" this war.
-

He said it would be a bother if he had to deal with both the marines and the ID prisoners. That's something completely different.
-
Now that it is moving to its final phases, are we even going to see him fight?
-
I think Sengoku ate the "White Tiger Zoan".
Because in the japanese mythology tigers and dragons are rivals/arch enemys.A White Tiger with a long beard and a Uniform would be cool, I think Sengoku can also use haki and is currently the second strongest fighter at the war (the only one at WB-Level).
Otherwise Time would be a cool and haxed ability, but I think time control would be a bit toooo powerful.
-
I think its the telepathy-telekinesis fruit, it helps him to communicate with everyone and I also speculate that he is a rokushiki master.
-
Theres no proof he can he doesn't look it and hes a strategist so that more than tells us why he is fleet admiral. If he could fight we would have seen him do something already.
-
Generals never fight. He is old, performed the hard yards at some stage to reach such a rank (It isn't the World Government, its the Marines) and to retain such a post without being pushed out would require a very high level of strength. You can see that there is ambition in the Marines, more recently from Smoker to the suggestion that Akainu has gained rank with such a powerful fruit (when he is so committed to Marine ideology) means there is some form of ambition to lead the Marines.
He has to be powerful if called upon, other than that, his main role isn't to fight, only when they're on their last legs. Whitebeard has responded to provocation and a direct-attack, otherwise he has had Marco etc. clean up for him, nothing as of yet has been aimed solely for Sengoku.
-

So based on that logic, Garp can't fight? Sounds weak to me.
P.S. When was the last time you read a shounen manga doing a journey of the west reference, and the guy signified as Goku couldn't do shit?
As Katt Williiams would say, not never.
-
Sengoku can fight. If he couldn't, it wouldn't be as climatic when Usopp defeats him. Or maybe Sogeking, Oda will decide.
-
Sengoku was an Admiral.
/thread.
-
-
of course he is powerful!!!!!!

-
pwngoat. how could you guys have forgotten.
and He's got the brain brain fruit. ;D

Sengoku is probably a haki beast.
Pwngoat on the other hand does very likely have DF powers. Why else would he keep it around all the time ?
-

It's PwnGoat that keeps Sengoku around, because PwnGoat is too awesome to do the talking, and Sengoku has an ability to read peoples minds.
-
Sengoku knows every martial art known to man, including all the fishman styles.
-
Yeah, he can. but i think in his hat and the goat as arms. could be the greatest shooter in the world with the goatgun and the flying gull hat. and the only thing that i have security is how the goat can kill all his enemys.
-
I think Pwngoat is immortal. Think about it: Goats usually live 10-15 years and Pwngoat is seen in the Ohara flashback and in the present, both times in perfect health and practically timeless.
Probably Sengoku can't fight but he has an ability to control animals and uses Pwngoat as his champion. Pwngoat is also in the execution platform… Guys, Oda is giving us enough hints now.

Aww, c'mon. Pwngoat's first appearance was enough.
