A sequel wouldn't be the greatest idea seeing as how the author has obviously been completely fed up with his manga for the past few months and just wanted it to end… Sure seeing the new teams play would be great but the games would suck even more than Christmas Bowl and the world cup combined, most likely.

That ending was pretty awful. The only thing I liked was the original three all going their separate ways.
Eyeshield really deserves a sequel, it's the best sports manga out there and it's one of the few mangas with real heart behind the characters.
-
That didnt feel like an ending at all, more like the set up for part 2.
And whats up with that bullshit reason for Kurita not sticking with Hiruma.
Ah well but atleast all the important characters got a bit of exposition.
-

I see it more as a forced ending by the editors because of the lower rankings, even though Inagaki stated in his site that he wanted to continue the series for 2 more years (though that may be kinda vague since it wasn't forshadowed compard to the Christmas Bowl…maybe an attempt of Jump to keep a sports series on but failed)
-
the last 50 - 100 chapters was like watching someone with AIDS deteriorate and finally die
-
I enjoyed the ending. Since Teikoku (though rereading that match has made me appreciate it a bit more) the story lost a lot of it's heart, but I felt pieces of it here. My problem isn't with the ending, but with when they ended. They ended right after the Youth Cup, so the focus was on Team Japan and not the Devil Bats.
The only thing I'm "pissed" about is no closure for Komusbui and Taki. I assume both went to Enma since Komusubi is just Kurita Jr., and because Taki is retarded, but I'm perturbed there wasn't at least a panel depicting them. Especially Komusubi! I mean he was there since the Sphinx match! I was severely irritated that Komusubi got no closure, but I am "treated" to seeing where Yamato and Taka went. I gather they're good players, but the story was for 90% of the story, about the Deimon Devil Bats. I mean yeah, it sucks we didn't see where Marco went, or what happened to Kakei, but the crime is not showing me where two characters I whole heartedly got behind went.
Aside from that, this ending satisfied me. I like that the Ha-Has split up. Angry that Juumonji continues to be put on the back burner, but I was glad that they acknowledged he's intelligent. And I love that Toguno and Kakori (the other brother. I don't think I got the name right) stayed together and got… really freaking buff. At least Toguno did. Took me three times to recognize him.
The strange part is that the story didn't end so much as set itself up. It's an ending to be sure, but it featured a lot of build up what with Musashi's team playing the champion from the college leagues and showcasing that Sena's former opponents are now mixed around. There's a lot of potential for this story to continue, but as it is I don't want it to. Maybe in a few years they can pick the story up, but right now I just want to sit back, read the old matches, and enjoy that there was some closure.
I am stiff miffed about Komusbui and Taki, but I'll live. Maybe in the volume we'll find out about them. A nice way to end the series in my mind.
-
Knowing taki he probary tried going pro or semipro or got held back a couple of years.
At least komusbui made it on the cover.
My biggest gripe is making sena captain over juumonji, but hey at least he made it to the better college.
My biggest question: Does yuki and takami's medical school have a team?
But all in all I enjoyed ES21 from start to finish.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if Takami and Yukimitsu are retired for football but sort of move into sports medicine. Somehow though I just like the idea that Takami is one of the only Ojou characters who went somewhere other than Ojou U.
Taki was on the cover of the final chapter too…personally knowing his stupidity, I think he probably would fit at Enma, but knowing him he's trying again to join the NFL on his own (like when we met him). I'd say the same with Ootawara but he probably got snuck into Ojou U like he got into Ojou High. Though Komusubi being missing...yeah, sort of made no sense. (hopefully all the missing characters get a "where are they now" in the final volume)
-
the last 50 - 100 chapters was like watching someone with AIDS deteriorate and finally die
50 chapters back yeah maybe, 100 chapters back it was pure gold. Knights vs Bats and Dinos vs Bats were two of the greatest games in the series.
@Capt:
My biggest gripe is making sena captain over juumonji, but hey at least he made it to the better college.
He's their star player and the one they turn to when everythings falling apart. There really is no better man for the job.
-
Being the star player doesn't necessarily mean they are automatic captains. Shin was the star player of Oujo, but Takami was captain. Kid, Riku, and Tetsuma were the stars of the Gunmans, but the captain was actually that Buffalo guy.
Sena may have substituted for the quarterback/captain in a pinch (Dinos game), but in the long haul I think Juumonji had a lot more credentials. For one, he's extremely observant. Not that Sena isn't, but Juumonji always seems to notice things before everyone else (such as Sena's identity). His intellect is a no-brainer (after the 2nd years leave he's the smartest one left), and also his years of leading his little gang have given him a lot more experience in the "control tower" as they call it. And lastly, he's pretty cool under fire, which is pretty important for a captain. How many times did we ever see Hiruma lose his cool in a pinch? Sena got better as the series went, but he always reacted like a spaz first.
And that went longer than I expected, but yes, I think Juumonji deserved the spot more.
-
Not that Juumonjo doesnt have many worthy qualities, But like weve seen in the Dino's game Sena is the one everyone rallies under when the going gets tough, when everything looks hopeless and its sink or swim everybody looks to Sena to make the call. That more than anything makes him lead candidate for team leader.
Id give Juumonji dominion over the line at most :p
-
I give you that on the field, but what about off it?
The team lost their three big brains, someone has to take care of recruiting, setting up practices, preparing for matches, research, keeping people in line, etc. Juumonji is much better suited for that.
-
Hiruma wasn't exactly their star player, and he was an insane captain
-
In what aspect wasnt he a star player, he was the best quarterback in the series.

Isnt that mostly the responsibility of the manager or something the entire team should be in on like recruiting.
Dunno why, just never really saw Juumonji as any kind of leader.
-
The last chapter made me cry, damn. Goodbye Eyeshield 21!!!, Im sure this manga series is one of the top 10 sport mangas of all time.
The only thing that annoys me is that the hah-hah brothers, taki, komusbi and their coach were not shown in the chapter except on the cover.
-
yea, the ending blew. im sorry even though im a fan. If your gonna end it, do it right. Jumonji where are you!!! Did you prove your dad wrong?!?!?!?!?! Curses
-
Here's Juumonji
http://www.onemanga.com/Eyeshield_21/333/12/
And here are the other two who's names escape me.
http://www.onemanga.com/Eyeshield_21/333/13/
As for proving his father wrong, i think that was acheived when he came and watched them play in the Christmas bowl.
-
In what aspect wasnt he a star player, he was the best quarterback in the series.
It's more or less assumed that Kid is the best Quarterback in the series when it comes to the actual position. He's faster, just as accurate, has better physical skills, and is faster mentally. Hiruma never truly defeated Kid, and Hiruma even admitted Kid was better during Agon's car jacking. That's why Kid got the starting job as Team Japan's QB. Hiruma was very good, but Kid was better.
However Sena was marketed at Deimon's ace from the beginning, even if it was a lie. The title of Captain doesn't automatically go to the best player, that's what the title of Ace is for. The title of Captain is to show leadership. Hiruma was the undeniable leader. He commanded his team completely, and in the one instance where he couldn't (after being crushed by Gaou), the team first turned to Musashi, again because of his leadership abilities. That's the idea that the person they turned to is the one who could alleviate everyone's problems. This makes a case for Juumonji being the next captain because Mushashi himself has commented that he and Juumonji are very similar. The point is that Juumonji makes a fine case for Captain because in the situation where things get tense, he stays calm.
Of course Sena was eventually the one to replace Hiruma, and because we're never introduce to another Quarterback, the assumed idea is that either Sena took the position of Quarterback, or someone else did. So the only real choices were Juumonji and Sena, and while Juumonji has all of the qualities, people were much more likely to flock under Sena for the moment. This is an odd topic though because had Juumonji gotten more screen time during the last two arcs, he likely would have been Captain because he would have been shown to be essential.
So in the end, Sena was made Captain. Kinda bittersweet, but I'm not shocked. The story quickly stopped trying to relate to Juumonji, Komusubi, and our other treasured Devil Bats by story end. Again, my problem is that the story ended after the World Cup and not after Teikoku, so putting that much focus on Juumonji might have seemed strange, though that's really breaking the barrier between analyizing the story and the person writing the story. In my opinion Juumonji would have made the better Captain, but Sena is well… Sena. Everyone counted on him for success anyway, so there you go.
But why are we arguing about this? Shouldn't more of us be pissed that we never got to see Hiruma's dad!?!?!?!
-

As a straight forward just throw the ball no frills QB probably, but no one who hasnt got Kids reflexes can outwit Hiruma. That and how Hiruma actualy uses his entire team.
And as for physical skills apart from his throwing speed Hiruma is much faster and stronger than him at everything, not that it matters but just wanted to point it out
The point is that Juumonji makes a fine case for Captain because in the situation where things get tense, he stays calm.
Being calm isnt of much use when you cant rally your players and get them pumped again. Not saying that he isnt smart or that he isnt calm under pressure, but has he ever displayed any leadership? And on the other hand people have been leaning on his strenght the entire series and Sena's scared out of his mind rambelings get people more pumped and pushes them more to the limits than anyone else excluding Hiruma has.
Heck have we ever seen Juumonji get pumped up and pulled his bros up from their slump without Sena paving the way for it.
But why are we arguing about this? Shouldn't more of us be pissed that we never got to see Hiruma's dad!?!?!?!
Cause arguing pointless stuff is about as much fun as you can have on the net.
-

I wasn't sure, but I double checked. Kid was physically better. Shin himself states how Hiruma has always been average. That's why he didn't think he could pass an NFL try out.

True, but Sena also usually relied on a creative Hiruma plan. Sena rarely just rallied everyone to his cause. Not saying he never did, and I'll admit, he did it frequently towards the end, but the point I want to make is that while people turned to Sena, they turned to him for his skill, not his leadership abilities. They placed his trust in him though. I'm not arguing that Sena doesn't deserve the title Captain, I'm just saying I was disappointed Juumonji didn't get it because for all the crap Sena gets, it would have been nice to see one small honor go to someone else.

When Kurita wanted to challenge Gaou full force Juumonji instantly said that he would play Center in his place. Considering the pressure that depends on that position, I'd say that was rather impressive.

Yes. http://www.onemanga.com/Eyeshield_21/137/15/ There might be more instances, but I currently don't have the time to check. However suffice it to say, once a Ha-Ha is in trouble, Juumonji will pull them out of it.
-

While granted that they are average he still has better stats. Kids benchpress is 70, Hiruma's is 75. Hiruma runs at 5.1, Kid at 5.6. The only thing Kid has above him is his super human reflexes. Which he made fine use of in that play.
As long as its stay in the pocket and throw Kid is untouchable, But Hiruma can do so much more than that on an equaly high level. Thats why i consider him the very best.

Fair enough.

Still think that is more in the area of being a good pal than any sort of leadership. But hey there's got to be plenty of times ive forgotten since this many people considered him a shoe-in for the team captain title.

And i suppose that when the Sphinx line trashed them in that diner counts as well.
-
did the last page really say "touth down" at the bottom?
oh man, even after 7 years, they still get the spelling of touch down wrong. xD
-
Has to be set up for Eyeshield Shippuden or something, He's basically hit the reset button (at least to an extent) it's a new competition, with new teams, and if japanese colledges are anything like english unis then we'll be seeing some new older players who can hopefully be a team's ace. He can't stop it now we've hardly met Hiruma's father and their have been definite hints at a back story there that hasn't been touched yet. Plus the kongo brothers going head to head is something we need to see. I only hope Jump has the sense to see this.
-
I just finished reading it. The ending sucked. I love how they went into overtime even though it wasn't permitted but then a two year jump without finishing the game? Fucking dumb. If they're is going to be a Eyeshield 21 - Part 2 than I'm all for it, but at the same time how many different ways can they write the matches? I don't think they could continue it but what a crappy way to just not resolve or follow up on so many characters.
On a side note, Kurita fell off the face of the planet during most of the last game which was kind of weird also since he was such a pillar of the series all the way through. What was that all about?
-

It wasn't just Kurita: aside from certain characters crucial for the game against the Americans (Sena, Monta, Hiruma, Gaoh, Agon and in some ways Rui and Takami), many of the character failed in the development department from the rushing of this arc.
-
I'll forgive all so long as we're given eyeshield shippuden
-
any news on a new eyeshield?
-
It's over dawg, just let it go.
-
anyone want to resuscitate this thread and chat about a good manga series? if not, we can just let it die again, i don't mind.
-
I'm probably the only one on the forum who found the ending quite inspiring actually
-
Loved that start of it. Classic theme of the over-overachieving lovable misfits.
The way they came from back from huge losing positions every single time wore a bit thin near the end, but it was still okay.
Once they won the championship it should of ended IMO. I did'nt think that international team story added much to the series at all =/
Overall an enjoyable series though. The captain was hilarious XD. I do wish the story expanded a bit more of the backgrounds and such of the team-members. It seemed to hint at more but never got around to it. Pity. -
I. Love. This. Manga. Great characters and plot, excellent illustrations but most of all it had that indefinable "it" factor.
Oh, and
.If this topic is going to be revived though, I rather not argue about the end of Eyeshield 21 again. I enjoyed it, and I think other people would too if they would just realize that the last arc wasn't meant to top the Christmas Bowl, it was just a sending off party for the series' characters.
How about I ask which games people liked the most? The last game between the Devil Bats and the White Knights will always be my favorite. It's just so beautifully set up with each character being steeped in backstory. And the beginning with the rain? And this page? Awesome.
-
I really, really, loved this series. I loved every single game, except the last couple in the redundant international chapionship thing.
I don't think the series should continue, because all the characters are kinda played out, and also the artist is doing another series right now, in Jump SQ.
-
Can't belive i got my hopes up, i honestly thought this bump was to announce that they were gonna animate the rest of the series and not skimp on the budget. Y'know do it hellsing ultimate style. But alas it wasnt meant to be.
-
My favorite has to be Deimon vs. Shinryuuji. Never have i been so suspensed in a match, and had to patiently wait for a new chapter every week.
! Not only was it the first match to have Deimon catch up from 0-32 to 36-35 during the second half, but all the more notable players from Deimon had their own highlight in it, especially Yukimitsu.
The only thing that made me go "meh" was that Naga only succeded in doing a field goal during the last half. I know that they underestimated Deimon but after seeing them succeed in catching up to them they could've been more cautious…..though i remember when they did it resulted in fumble and Jumonji getting a TD. The Alexanders were like a rehash of this match but they succeeded in making more points. While I would be glad to see a sequel I fear it wouldn't be the same, even though Sena's team seems like the underdog compared to the others. (I had this same feeling if Slam Dunk had a sequel, not all would be able to play again)
-
I think the Shinryuuji match is definitely the high point of the series. Yukimitsu enters the field, Jumonji makes a touchdown, Agon in general, "devils don't pray to god!", kurita smashing the shinryuuji line, sena beating agon, so many highlights.
-
And don't forgot Doburoku's hilarious wager!
-
I'm only up to volume 20. some day i will have more money to buy more.

Oh? What's the occassion? Do I need to switch back to my Hiruma avatars?
Nah I was just re-reading some parts for hilarity and awesome arts.
Although I am looking for a good image of cartoon-Hiruma with his hilarious grin. Basically the face he's making on the top panel here except without his helmut on:

So you bumped a 3 year old thread…okay. I didn't expect there to be any more eyeshield news but...okay.

Murata's gotten pretty popular around here lately with One Punchman and all so maybe some who never got a chance will check this manga out. It's about American Football but you don't need to be at all interested in the sport to like it. It's got hilarious characters, a fun plot and awesome art:

i miss this manga when it was good
when it was good, it was FANTASTIC

Yeah. It's actually a bit fun to look at Murata's earlier stuff. Hiruma looks very different. But I always wondered if that was done on purpose by Shonen authors in series where the characters are aging or becoming stronger. Most of the notable titles I read the characters start off with very rounded features and then become more angular towards then end.
-
every time I see this thread, I have to reiterate how much I love this series. This, OP, and FMA are the only series I'm seriously trying to collect all the volumes of right now. I place it right up there.
and as fun as OPM is, thinking about eyeshield again really makes me yearn for Murata to illustrate a more… serious story. Something I can really grit my teeth over, relate to the characters as they struggle, and revel in the eventual triumphs.

Man, I forgot how good some of the art in this series was.
Probably the King of Series That Didn't End When It Should.
-
I think I've posted this before but I'm OK with how the series ended. The Christmas Bowl was the culmination of all their hopes and dreams and served as the climax of the series. The arc afterward was like a victory parade to show off some of the best players one last time. In fact that's basically what the NFL's All Star Game is: a bunch of good players playing an exhibition after the season is over and the Big Game is already won. Of course a lot of people hate the All Star Game too so I can see why people would be unsatisfied with the end.
For me though it just worked. Also it had some badass moments:
