I had to jump in on this thread since I'm like a hardcore fan. I'm enjoying DB Kai but I haven't got very far. I'm looking forward to seeing Goku vs Vegeta again.

Yay, I'm actually happy about this. This is FUNi's chance to get the dub right and hopefully use correct names and attacks.

wow fillerless Dragonball dub? love all the attention it's gotten after so many years, if this gets on tv I might just turn on my tv.
Don't forget, let's hope they also recast some parts!

Yeah, let's hope. But in the meantime, I have to say, and I do realize how nitpicky this is, but…
Dragonball Z Kai? What the hell, FUNi?
As I've said, it's to kill possible confusion from people who are unaware that this isn't a new series and that it's just Dragon Ball Z refreshed.
Hoping for Vic Mignogna as Goku and Chuck Huber as Freeza.
It will never happen, but oh well.
Aaaaaaaand, boom. This is why I don't buy DBZ releases anymore. I knew they'd release Kai eventually, furthermore we're now probably going to get Blu-ray too with this. They just started re-releasing the series AGAIN in the form of Dragonboxes. Wonder if they'll finish it.
I'm willing to buy the DB kai release, as long as they give me more than 15 eps per set
I dare say DBZ has seen more different releases over any other media in history.
Star Wars probably had more.
DBK will be the fifth release in America and second release in Japan.

If that's true, it'll explain the quick release… and what was mentioned before about that one dude said about FUNi licensing it, having already started the dub on Water Seven, and two other things... :ninja:
Also, I'm glad the cast is staying mostly intact. I'm one of the few that likes the dub voices.
Wait, cast intact? So, Freeza's staying an old lady?
Fail
Are sdproject's torrents back online yet? Everytime I click their torrents, I get a message stating the file does not exist/is removed.
@The:

No, if you read the post, the guy says that he spoke to a few VAs, and the ones he spoke to are all returning and they got the impression that the cast was going to be the same, but he got no specific answers.
@The Fanboy Review:
Having talked to a few people, it appears the cast will remain the same as the Funimation Dragon Ball Z dub, but with greater care being given to the script. I say appears because I’ve only talked to a few people, they are indeed playing the same roles they played before, and they were under the impression it was going to be the same cast, this may not apply for every character.
Seriously, they don't need to recast MUCH, just Freeza and at least a few of Sabat's roles so he's not playing 20 people anymore.
Damien Clarke left, so they have to recast Cell anyway, and I was sure there was one or two other roles that needed a recasting due to VA unavailability. If you're gonna throw in a voice or two that people won't recognize, you might as well go the full hog and fix the few that REALLY need a replacement. It's being advertised in Japan as a Directors cut, do the same here and do it justice this time.

I have the nagging feeling FUNi's going to fuck this up big time. It's just their thing when it comes to Dragon Ball (aside from DRAGON BOXES).
Reworking the script is gonna mean jack shit when they still have awful VAs like Shit Schemmel, throw their dub terminology around and keep scenes that are popular with the cool kids crowd (over 9000, hope of the universe, Vegeta's death).
I'd LOVE to be wrong and watch a new awesome dub come May (sadly the DVD, since Blu-Ray is region locked), but I just know they're going to cater to the fandumb.
No, if you read the post, [….] and do it justice this time.
Yeah, that's what I get for mostly skimming it (the penguin guy's comment at the bottom didn't help, either).

I dunno. it's their 83rd time going at this, especially if you count the games. I think they surely must have this down to a science by now, and you;d think they'd assume the only people buying it this time are hard core fans only that want an accurate translation. The dragonboxes already defaulted to the japanese track, so…
Maybe.
It has to be pretty much rescripted and redubbed from scratch thanks to the new timing anyway, so maybe they can avoid the pitfalls once and for all
And honestly, I'd rather they keep the guys that have had 10 years to get comfortable with the roles rather than unleash a season 3 new-group again. (Not that any of the cast has really gown as actors over the years, but they're at least comfortable doing the role)
All that said... who the hfil BUYING the dvds is actually going to watch the dub? If it was airing on tv its one thing, but...

Same here. Yes, I liked them a lot. Dub Vegeta, Dub Piccolo, Dub Cell, Dub Freeza, and espically Dub Trunks.
However, one voice I always hated was Recoome's. >_<
I liked Sean Schemmel as Goku (arms self) but I'll admit he was vastly inferior to Masako Nozawa.

Me. I've watched the series all the way through in Japanese once, repeated a few episodes here and there, but I'm done with it. Watched it throughout my whole childhood in Spanish a ton of times. But now, I pretty much only care about English for any anime. I can't stand to read during the show and my Spanish skills are good enough to know what's up, but takes me a few seconds to catch up, so just having the ease of mind of English is a very nice bonus to me.
i thought once vegeta was way less powerful then goku they should have brought piccolo up to his power somehow and had a vegeta piccolo rivalry kinda like a zoro sanji rivalry… i thought it would be cool anyways

that's… kind of what happened. Piccollo caught up and passed Vegeta on Namek, and while they both had ocassional moments of "strongest in the series", they both fell into the niche of arogant second bananas to goku who go off and train a lot.
Piccollo got completely chumped during the Buu saga however.

Kinda, but Vegeta was too busy being Goku's rival to fight with Piccolo. =P
But in general, I wish Piccolo and the human Z-Fighters got stronger too, because in the end there became a huge power difference between them and the Saiyans. Super Saiyan 1, 2, and 3 all increased the power gap unfortunately. =/
At the end of the series I just wanted Tienshinhan to bust out "Kaio-KenX100!" and surprise everyone. (Sure x4 nearly killed Goku initially, but he was doing x20 against Frieza with no apparent adverse side effects…) It would have been payoff to his time on Kai's planet which... resulted in nothing.
It was always Yamcha's role to get his ass kicked however.
This can be attributed to Toriyama just sort of forgetting his characters as he... often did.
@robbybedfart:

Evidenced by Launch.
He also didn't remember who Tao Pai Pai was during an interview with Oda, and was confused about having to remember "such a minor character." To which Oda responded "He was a major villain!"
But then, its pretty common for fans to know series inside and out more than the creators sometimes.

Yeah. I mean, Dragon Ball is still popular among the fans, and Toriyama is more since done with the franchise. (Well, maybe not completely), but he's certainty _not i_nterested in continuing the series or something to that effect.
[/went off topic slightly]

I meant during the buu saga, i thought something like piccolo wanted to get stronger so he traveled to hell to finally fully complete himself since he was only the child of demon king piccolo he goes to absorb demon king piccolo to get another huge boost in power but it turns out that he's about as his son some epic non-saiyan fighting occurs piccolo absorbs him and gets to about the same level as ssj2 vegeta….. very cliche but it would have been fine
question too, why did they never wish for son goku to unlock all his potential power? would have been a way bigger help in fights... of course it would ruin the series.... and i guess it's a mangakas job not to ruin the series.... and since he controls the series he obviously wouldn't do that.... hell i just answered my own question

oda sounded like a crazy fan that interview
question too, why did they never wish for son goku to unlock all his potential power?
Goku had no hidden potential. All of his power was right there on the table that simply just grew and grew. When it came to Goku's Super Saiyan state, he was originally only capable of achieving it through intense emotional rage. After his trip at the Yadratians' planet, he was able to become a Super Saiyan at will whenever he wanted.
Gohan, on the other hand, had a dormant power that he was only able to access through his emotions. When the Grand Elder on Namek unleashed Gohan's potential, it made it easier for Gohan to tap into what he had been unable to access without getting really pissed off. Gohan, while as a Super Saiyan, still had a hidden reserve of power that Goku noticed that Gohan had yet to unlock and it was due to him holding back, not enjoying the thrill of fighting as his father did.

Well, GT ended with Piccollo in hell, so that may well have happened.

Dragon can only do things within its creator's, IE Kami or Dende's, power, and Goku was clearly stronger than him by the Z portion. (Same reason the dragon couldn't just shoo the Saiyins away.) Even at the end of Buu saga it made the note that it could restore Goku's energy to normal levels easily enough, but increasing his strength was beyond the dragon.
Plus, Goku was pretty much always at his max potential, its just through sheer tenacity and training that his limits kept expanding. Gohan had all the locked potential because he wasn't fight happy, and that got drawn out and expanded nearly every arc.
Slightly akward that recreating a planet and restoring all life on it is within the dragon's power, but, I guess life giving (including immortality) is the big thing its got going for it.
Hrm. If anyone had ever actually succeed in the "immortality" wish (aside from Garlic Jr.) would it have stopped working once Kami or Eldest Namek died and the balls turned to stone, leaving the wisher plain mortal again? Considering all the afterlife fighting that went on, it didn't seem to be a solution anyone gave a shot at. Immortal Goku woulda been REALLY useful against Buu…
No. Otherwise everyone wished back to life with the Dragon Balls would have died once the balls turned to stone. :P
No. Otherwise everyone wished back to life with the Dragon Balls would have died once the balls turned to stone. :P
Well no, the balls restore life, they do a one time heal on damage and put the spirits back in place, but they don't maintain it, people age normal, and can still die after that.
But immortality? KEEPING a person eternally young, able to survive any and all damage? That's got to be a different class of constant magic activity, like the dragon perpetually being prepared to bring the wisher back to life or something.
Garlic Junior is the only time we ever saw it done, and that was filler, but he seemed to be basically, damage proof. (Of course, most of the villains were except for the last hit…) Would it have been possible to sever his head, and then the head and torso keep on going seperatley? Or would it have just been... impossible to decapitate? Or would he be able to reatach his own head and have it instantly heal back into place?
In any of those cases, that seems like a condition that would have to be within the dragon's power to prevent or maintain.
I was referring to your question about what would happen if someone had gained immortality and then the one who made the Dragon Balls had died. :p
I was referring to your question about what would happen if someone had gained immortality and then the one who made the Dragon Balls had died. :p
…and so was I. It doesn't matter if the dragonball maker dies after a one time event wish has been granted, like "create panties" or "bring this person back to life" or "find this one thing." Its ALREADY DONE, there's nothing to maintain, nothing to keep going.
But immortality? That would have to be ongoing magic, unless it did some kind of cellular restructure thing (which probably would have crimped the Saiyins style.) . How would that have actually worked out? Especially considering the planet busting levels of power later? at what level of abuse does the immortality stop working? If its beyond the dragon's power to destroy a couple saiyins because they're stronger than Kami, then surely it should also be unable to say... survive an attack from Frieza.
Wishes are within the dragon's power, and immortality is within the dragon's power... when Kami was the strongest thing on Earth. But after that level was long since breeched? When Goku and company started being far beyond the power of the Supreme Kai, god of the gods?

Fix'd, Lots and lots of Fix'd
And I'd assume the wish would stick. It'd be a one time surge of magic to make the Saiyan in question immortal an then would never be needed again. I don't see God or Dende Dying changing that. But we don't know really, Toriyama never really explored that. Though, Garlic Jr. succeded in becoming immortal, but that was a movie/filler. And God disposed of him by getting that mystic Water and throwing him into the Dead Zone.
Also for example, Demon King Piccolo was turned young by the DBs, and then proceeded to kill the Dragon. He was strong enough to kill the Dragon, and had his youth restored. As soon as that happened, he didn't pop back to normal or anything.
I don't think the heroes being stronger than the Kaio or the Kaioshin has anything to do with their capacity to become immortal.
That's pretty much another reason why I felt the wish for immortality would have stuck. Never does a wish stop working once the maker of the Dragon Balls or Shenlong are gone. Otherwise everyone wished back would have died, Demon King Piccolo would have gone back to his elderly state and Oolong's greatest panties in the world would have vanished. :p
On another note: Kai is confirmed for roughly 100 episodes (99 to be precise). So it's goin' beyond the Freeza saga. Considering the shortening of the Freeza fights with Goku, the removal of Garlic Jr., and removal of Artificial Human/Cell fillers, I'd say we might be able to make it to Majin Boo.
And I'd assume the wish would stick. It'd be a one time surge of magic to make the Saiyajin in question immortal an then would never be needed again.
If you're gonna be a stickler about it.
Saiyan is technically just as correct. :p
Saiyan is right.
Saiyajin is weeaboo
Saiyan is right.
Saiyajin is weeaboo
Saiyajin is being a fail weeaboo because anyone who actually knows Japanese would know that "-jin" just means something similar to "people of" (not exactly). So Saiyans works fine.

Exactly.
Just like those weeaboos who call Future Trunks "Mirai no Torankusu" (IE, they actually spell out his Katakana name in Romanji instead of making it Trunks)
