The fan art in american jump sucks. Most of the time its poorly drawn or copied directly from the manga. Theres are occasionally some good original fan art though.
-
Just got volumes 5 & 6 today.
They were good except for calling Kuro's "Killer Illusion" the "Out-of-the-bag". I guess it was because of the cat puns. Well at least it wasn't painful to hear it like 4Kids did with the "Cat-out-of-the-bag-attack" with naselly Kuro.
There's one line I find weird in Volume 5 on page 38 Kuro says "and what did my hard work win me? The entire Navy on my heels. Hunted by Marines and Spies and Bounty Hunters…"
Why are they switching back and forth. Why don't they just call them Marines since the insignia is all over the place.
-
Now I know why they are called both the Navy and the Marines.
Because they are Marines that fight on water thus being Naval Marines.I got an explanation from a friend who knows a lot about that stuff.
-
Just one more thing Viz has done to One Piece, I don't if anyone has mentioned this: In Shonen Jump, there's like a little coloum each month that show what is happening in the One Piece anime…but they spoil what will happen next in the manga. Last month, Luffy defeated Don Krieg, but in their anime section, it talked about Arlong and Nami's connection to him...with out a spoiler alert! If I just started reading in only Shonen Jump, I wouldn't be happy to have the story resolved in some little coloum before the manga...
-
o.O
I'm surprised they'd be comfortable with the anime lapping the manga (in the States at least). I smell a hard sell: "New in Shonen Jump– chapters you already saw animated and badly dubbed!" Wow. The money's burning a hole in my pocket!
I just learned what I've seen (the end of Baratie and the whole of Arlong) comprises volumes 8 through 10, so I can't even get the English volumes to compare. (curses, but finds it comes out dubbed into "Rats!" :D) I guess I could start from the beginning. Who has these cheap (and doesn't rip off on postage)
:stabs people before they can say "scanlations" -- 5Mb a chapter, 90 chapters behind even the dub, and 56k modems don't mix.

That was what made me go to tankos.**
It does annoy me that Viz are so bloody slow with OP. In ten years time I hope to be married with a family and a good job. As much as I love OP now, I'm not sure if I want to be still reading it and still waiting to see how it ends ten years from now.

Speaking of, when is that slow-to-be-released next volume coming out? I just heard "July". What exact day?
Also, anyone know how the manga sales in the US are? At least it appears that the Barnes and Noble near my house always sells out of their One Piece volumes. -
Here's a fun puzzler: why is Volume 2 of the american manga seemingly so much harder to find than Volume 1?
I tried both Amazon and Barnes-and-Noble online assuming they'd both have a fairly cavernous selection. The latter said "no new copies, go to a secondhand dealer we associate with", and the former said "takes 2-3 weeks to deliver" while the 1st volume ships in 24 hours. They also reccomended secondhand dealers.
I guess I'll have to break down and contact a more manga-centric dealer. I don't want to have to split the order and find Volume 2 in my box ahead of Volume 1.

Haha!
Sweden, the country beside my country…
Got One Piece Manga up to 30 or something! o.O -

I see 20 Inu-Yashas for release.
And I do beleive they come out at roughly the same speed as OP.
My sister buys them, ya can't fool me. -

I'm really not intrested in japanese fan art, I can read u.s. shonen jump for kiddie fan art. oh and there's that one usopp fan art which is incredible racist towards native americans, usopp in N. INCREDIBLY racist?
Your kidding me right?Incredibly racist is a Jim Crow play with black face.
I would label that under mildly offensive. And as to the fanart gallery. You really don't know what your missing. Don't knock what you havn't tried.

I think it's very much a matter of context. Yes, the native american (or black-face, or middle-eastern, or….) stereotype is a stereotype. However, when used appropriately, it can still make for decent art. Also, if this is fanart from Japan, it may be that they simply don't get the same picture of the Native American that you see in America. Ignorance can be excused; I doubt most American OP fans could accurately render the dress and habits of a 16th century Japanese man either.

**well first the usopp gallery pirates starts in volume 7 in the US edition.
i've "read" most of the one piece graphic novels in japanese, and i really don't care about the fanart. SBS and the actual one piece story seem more important.
I wouldn't put it on par with a black face but usopp doing that stereotypical cry is just as bad as the stereotype middle eastern cry of ayayayayayaee! or that tomahawk thing that, those baseball fans do.
Yes, Vol.7 had a page of boring fanart from some 12 year olds who can only do pin-ups._

Weuw, is Viz really THAT slow? With everything or is it just with One Piece? Man, even TokyoPop isn't as bad. I've been following Fruits Basket and it shows up every one and a half month or something, and now it's just 7 volumes behind from Japan. In my country comics are released a volume each month. Makes you wonder what goes on in the offices for Viz to be so damn s-s-s-l-l-o-o-o-o-w-w.. hmm??

Does Viz ever answer their e-mails. I e-mailed them 5 days ago about changing some things in One Piece and they haven't responded back yet.

Only the Shonen Jump series that are published in the SJ magazine (i.e. One Piece, Naruto, Shaman King and any other I can't think of). They're published around three times a year. The other SJ manga (NSS about the Advanced range) are published every two months with the exception of Yu-Gi-Oh and Kenshin which are published monthly (I don't know about any other monthly series). The problem is because they don't want the graphic novels over taking SJ and they only publish two chaps a month (SK gets three). In my opinion if they upped it to four chaps a month for all series published in Shonen Hump (least for a while anyway), they could increase the number of graphic novels published a year to four, maybe five.

Here's things I would change about the Viz manga then reprint the books
Change Zolo back to Zoro.
Change Navy to Marines (even though during the Kuro flashback they kept calling them Marines)
Change Django to Jango.
Keep in Japanese references with little footnotes explaining what each means (Whenever Sanji says "Nami-san" and the like).
Post what you will change.

**Okay, let repherse that.
1. Call him Zoro, don't worry about the 'L'
2. So what if Jango is called Django, they both sound the same
3. Navy and Marines are almost the same.
4. They do that sometimes

joekido you don't have to be a jerk on what I want to have done to the manga. It's like the fact that I want to rescanlate the early chapters. You want it to happen but there's no possible way.
I can dream can't I?
-
Why would Sanji calling Nami "Nami-san" make any sense whatsoever?
Problem 1: Its a translation. Why would they leave bits and pieces of japanese?
Problem 2: Sanji is if anything a French/Swedish person, him using "san" ONLY makes sense when its in japanese. If anything he should call her Mademoiselle.
-
1. That's not just a bit or piece. You can't really understand where Sanji is coming from sometimes if the honorifics aren't there. Though I do understand you there, so…
2. Since it's an English translation, they'd be best off with "Miss." The French thing would only really fit if Oda said he was French or something.
-
1. Well I don't mean cut it. Just translate San.
2. Yhea I know, …

I've got a question myself.
Now I've been wanting to start reading the scanlations for a while but I'm not sure where to start since I've already read through the first 7 volumes of Viz's version. So where should I begin? The beginning of volume 8? Or should I start from chapter 1?
-
8. Viz didn't really miss anything, so you'd be fine there. Though, the scans before volume 18 or so sucked ass. XD

Ah ok. So I can start at volume 8 with no problems?
Oh yeah was the Ussop's Pirate Gallery cut out of volume 7? I don't see it in there.
Heh well yeah I know the early scans suck ass. I mean I tried going from chapter 1 with the scans and I just stopped around chapter 5 because I really felt Viz's translations were better at the moment. But at that point I had already gotten the first three volumes and read through them anyways which is why I had that opinion.
-
The Usopp's pirate gallery was cut out of Vol.5,6, and 7.
They added their own little page…..but anyone who has seen the stuff that gets in the tankos will know theres no comparison.

Yhea, read my post again.

yeah it's just one page full of american reader's fanart.

Do you think that Viz One Piece should be monthly. At the rate they are going, they'll reach Water 7 after I die. I mean, aren't DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Ruroni Kenshin released monthly, why not One Piece, since there are 38 volumes out in Japan and SJ is only on Arlong with the GN's at Don Krieg.
I think monthly would be a great idea along with changing all the names back to normal.
-
I think eventually they'll need a new way to sell these long-running series.
I'm balking at the thought of spending about $60 to acquire the eight volumes back I am already. In a hypothetical world where all 38 were available, that would mean like $300 to get current. It also probably means a LOT of space to give up.
I'd love to buy a scanned manga on CD. Environmentally friendly, potentially cheaper, and plenty of room to do things like "buy volume 20 and for $10 extra, we'll give you the series up to 20"
-
Ah, but having a hard-copy enables easier browsing through the pages. After buying volumes 9, 12-27 of the Indonesian version, I noticed a whole lotta things that I missed. As a OP fan, I consider this to be priceless XD In Indonesia, each volume is worth around US $1. Still kinda expensive, though. Used to be a lot cheaper.
-
Scans over Tankos?
Dude your playing yourself.
-
I e-mailed Viz again since it's been days since I e-mailed them last and they haven't responded. So I e-mailed them again a couple days ago and they still haven't responded.
They probaely don't give a shit of what the fans think.
They shouldn't be like 4Kids and not listen to the fans and repeat mistakes.
-
I don't even want to think of how many emails they must receive in a day.
-
Does anyone know what Viz HQ's address is? I want to send a letter to them saying I want a few changes to One Piece. I'm close to actully shelling out the money to buy the raws and use Stephen's scripts. Where can you buy the raws anyway?
-
I believe I found the address on the official Viz website.
VIZ, LLC
P.O. BOX 77010
San Francisco, CA 94107Is this right?

Two for $20.

Who agrees with me that Viz doesn't seem to be trying as hard to translate One Piece as they are the other mangas.
I bought Yu Yu Hakusho volume 1 and it was a pretty good translation.
But with One Piece, the translation sucks. Where's the profanity?

You DO know that profanity isn't everything, right?
Other than the "Zolo" deal, debateable to some, Viz really is doing a great job on Arlong, I think.
-
Well I haven't reached Arlong since I buy by Volume and not Monthly SJ.
I'm sorry but it doesn't feel right without the profanity. Especally the fact whenever I read Usopp, I think of Dubsopp. I find the latter very depressing.
-
You don't need cussing to make the story good. Viz is now getting better and better, I like it how they handle Arlong and they kept him the same way Oda puts him to be.
-
Does profanity even map appropriately from language to language? Profanity has an "intensity" factor you don't usually see with regular speech, aside from its meaning. Think of all the different terms for mating, and how some are far more profane than others.
If you need to match not only meaning but intensity, it's really impractical to try and get it.
