DBZ sucked, it was just a bunch of cliche fighting and poweruping and fighting some more despite what Schmekie tries to claim. The quest for Dragonballs in that stage was just a paper thin excuse for more fighting. And they weren't good fights either. Just a bunch of random kicking and punching.
What is the Greatest Manga of all time? (not a popularity contest)

a plague to all those that didn't vote one piece and especially those that voted death note of all things

Care to counter my argument? I remember seeing Vegeta fighting Android 18 recently on TV. I'm sorry, what fight? Because it looked like a bunch of random punching and kicking to me with Vegeta losing for some reason.

Ah finally, we find the perpetrator behind the swine flu virus
Its hard to decide which Manga is best as many have epic moments. I think after the most recent chapters I would have to say OP wins hands down, but Its closely followed by a few others. Hell, even beelzebub looks like its working its way up the list for me, but mainly because its nice to see some fresh material that ain't too predictable. coughnarutocough
-
One Piece for me.
It has great characters, it is original and just gives a great feeling reading it.
Monster and Berserk are great too. -
It seems like many of the people here saying they didn't like DBZ are using the anime as reference. Now I havn't read the DBZ part of the Dragon Ball manga but from what I've heard it is faster paced and better than the anime.
-
The anime made whole episodes out of like three panels.
-
just 1 vote for Monster?
is it because most of the people here never read it or every1 wanted to vote OP before they vote for monster
-
I say dragon ball will always be my all time favorite but naruto is my favorite for now.
-
Monster was really good but I still think One Piece and a few others are better than it.
-
^^ you are right, but seeing others which are only average with more votes
just scares me of the taste here -
The only one I don't think deserves to be in the poll is Death Note. All the others I think are good or I've heard are really good (like Slam Dunk). Death Note should be in "Other". Don't get me wrong, I somewhat like Death Note but it's nowhere near the best manga ever.
Edit: I'm not sure about FMA either.
-

Considering how shallow Toriyama made the manga that's not a bad thing unless you like things lacking depth.
@Thousand:
Care to counter my argument?
Don't what that'll do since we all know it won't change you're opinion of it.
-
What's shallow about the manga?
-
i have the same opinion as you:happy:..
i rly like HxH but it`s also not even near to be "best manga" but okay taste is tasteā¦was just curious
-

Why are you talking about an anime in a manga thread?
-

What the hell are you going on about?
-
He just like's to refute other people's opinions.
-
I didn't even state an opinion and he started spouting some random shit.
-
@Kairouseki:
What's shallow about the manga?
The parts in the manga where Toriyama looks like he's rushing through stuff to get to the next scene, arc, etc
@Kairouseki:
He just like's to refute other people's opinions.
There was nothing to refute.
-
So five minutes taking up ten episodes is your idea of "giving depth to shallow material"?
-
Wasn't talking about Namek.
-
YOU're not talking about Namek.
Nice response edit by the way. -
Actually in the Buu saga it took about 5 episodes to turn to SS3. You're argument is invalid.
-
So five minutes taking up ten episodes is your idea of "giving depth to shallow material"?
No but Toei for example showing us what Goku was actually doing after Roshi told him to go train for the 22nd Budokai is. Something that Toriyama could've done but didn't.
-
Out of that list I'd put them in this order:
1. One Piece
2. Fullmetal Alchemist
3. Monster
4. Death Note
5. Dragon BallDragon Ball Z was great back in the day, but now that I've seen/read other anime/manga and can step back and judge it properly. It really wasn't all of that great after the Freiza saga.
I have not read much of the DBZ manga, though. I'm assuming that aside from the horrible pacing in the anime there isn't too much of a difference between them? If everybody still goes Super Saiyan than it's still really flawed in my eyes.
-
^ The only thing different between the manga and anime is that the manga is faster paced and a little more violent. And also, I heard that Toryama originally intended the manga to end after the Frieza saga but he was goaded into continuing. It was probably because Shueisha wanted to keep making money off it.

Speaking of Dragonball, OM has been uploading higher quality chapters weekly. Does that mean there's no other re-scans? I remember on another site, most of the early chapters were in reversed lower-quality format.

Do they have already the whole series already? I'd like to re-read itā¦ sold my volumes...
OnTopic, Id say One Piece. Even if its unfinsihed what we have seen is imo better than the rest I've read (Bleach, Death-Note, Naruto, Hellsing, Dragonball and Shinigami to Chocolate Parfait[yeah, I rly read that scum :D])
-
People should read iron wok jan.
It's better then quite a lot of the series bandied around here.
-

Only up to 44. That's why I was asking if there were others with the quality like that.
-

What must it be like to be you?

A cliche energy attack showoff with the two attacks pushing each other for cheap suspense until the good guy's attack is invariably stronger because of his friends/dreams/will-power etc. All it had was a slight twist with Vegeta throwing off cell for a bit. BORING. That whole Cell fight was dragged out unneccessarily anyway with Gohan pulling power out of his ass from out of nowhere.
-
Much of Dragonball, during the "Z" era, was just as story-driven as the old days, just with a way bigger emphasis on fighting. The struggle for the Namekian Dragonballs, the hunt for Cell, etc. all had nothing to do with power levels (which were strictly a plot point in the Freeza saga that were proven to be unreliable, anyway. It went toward the whole premise of "the evil villains are trying to cement the heroes in a 'place,' while their spirit and force of will defies their grey numbers and caste system.") or powering up. DBZ had those things, but they were far from an emphasis.
DBZ sucked, it was just a bunch of cliche fighting and poweruping and fighting some more despite what Schmekie tries to claim. The quest for Dragonballs in that stage was just a paper thin excuse for more fighting. And they weren't good fights either. Just a bunch of random kicking and punching.
youtube video showing "the evil villains are trying to cement the heroes in a 'place,' while their spirit and force of will defies their grey numbers and caste system."

I like how Luffy Batter has totally forgotten his original argument and actually makes Shmeckie's point for him.

My original argument is DBZ is chock full with fights that constitute random punching and kicking, energy blasts and out of nowhere power ups. No matter how much Schmekie tries to make it sound impressive and look pretty by using fancy words, it doesn't change anything. Also knock of this Luffy Batter stuff. I barely know him save from what I've read.

Well the greatest manga of all time really needs the person to read every manga out there and to make sure they are completely finished to judge it. Another factor will be different genres; maybe split into genres since theres so many categories and etc.
I don't know about the greatest manga of all time, but I read and enjoy One Piece every week and always like discussing it with friends, so I voted One Piece just for those simple reasons. I also do enjoy Hunter X Hunter and FMA.
Onto DBZ, hell did I enjoy DBZ when it was on TV. I remember it was the shit and EVERYONE would talk about it. Everyone would go on the net and search and pretend they know everything about, and boasting they seen that ep and etc. Dragonball/Z definitely worth a mention as it inspired many mangaka's, it set up the golden age of shounen. -
Dragon Ball started A LOT of things. Well if you want to get technical, lots of Tezuka's work started things but DB/DBZ REALLY started trends that would lead us to shonen manga as we know it today.
I
I don't think I've yet to really read the great manga of all time yet, but I seriously think if there is one, OP is a good contender. It may not be the most popular series but it's a real gem, you're not going to find something this epic very often. The story, the twists, the insanity XD, it's got a bit of everything in there. However I think Oda's drawn-out story telling is a huge flaw keeping it from great greatness but, if he had just got to the point this series could have been over and done a long time ago, and how much fun would that be? =PStill not knowing what to vote on the poll though, must think about it.
DBZ WAS the shit years back. I definately agree it was a revolutionary series but I'm not sure about calling it the greatest. What eventually turned me off of the series, besides CN replaying the tournament saga for like 5 FREAKIN YEARS, it also was severely drawn out with it's 5+ episode battles sometimes and parts of the story that took episodes to tell that just weren't interesting to me (I actually enjoyed watching Dragon Ball a bit more wtf). But everything else about it was pretty good.

I liked Dragon Ball Z as a kid where all I wanted was mindless action. These days? I want a little story in the shows I watch.
-
So you perfectly remember Phenomonyl who didn't post that often anymore, but you have obscure memories of the frequent train wreck poster that you were?

I knew you had a habit of forgetting what you said but this is ridiculous.

I think the problem with Dragonball is that most people watched it when they were younger and thought about it much less critically, meaning people now either love it for the nostalgia or hate it because they only remember the powering up and repeated frame fighting (y'know, the only stuff you would have cared about as a kid).
To judge it properly, you should read the manga and you should read it now, with your current mindset. I think people might be pleasantly surprised. I personally find in terms of characters, story, and art, it still blows the majority of shonen manga out of the water. In fact, if we didn't take it for granted so much now and if it had been introduced in the present manga scene, it would still be seriously hot shit.
I also think people give the second half (Z, I guess) of the series too much crap too. There were whole volumes of it where no fighting or powering up was going on at all, just plot and character interactions, and up until the Cell arc the fight choreography was very good (the repetitive punches and kicks come from the anime needing to stretch out a few panels into a few minutesā¦) What the Buu arc didn't have in choreography though, it made up for in humor and its imaginative villain. Sure, pre Z era Dragonball was probably better, but it didn't get crappy by any means.
You should probably take what I say with a mountain of salt because I am a huge longtime fan.

Seriously, I have been saying that exact same shit to stuck-up anime fans for friggin' years! Oh my god, it's so nice to hear someone else say it for a change!

I would have hoped it was a common sentiment round here.

Good show.

I still say this is a tough sell one reason being is that if your someone who follows [bad] word of mouth about something are you really going to pick up something like Inuyasha and/or stick with it to the end?
