The manga and anime are both adaptations of the original novels. The anime is far and away a superior adaptation compared to the manga, though while it's quite visually impressive, it lacks some of the charm (not to mention much of the narrative snark) of the novels.
The first novel (whose plot forms the basis for just under half of the first season) is available in English, with the second due in October of this year. The rest have been translated by fans, and are easily accessible if you know where to look. Try Google.

My gut impression from the new Haruhi is that it's by a new director, because a lot of Kyon's sarcasm and contempt from the first series seems lost in the newer episodes, which it shouldn't be lost until somewhere after Snow Mountain Syndrome. It's really bothering me…Kyon has too much, err, pepper in the new episodes. :/

No, this episode was basically filler. There is an important line in the Endless Eight story that was cut from this particular episode, and that (plus the ending) is what made it filler. Three episodes is too much, although this episode was a return to the original Haruhi style.
That's true. The bright side of all this is that although filler, this filler would make sense in the original storyline. The show isn't ruining the story with out of character filler.
Speaking of Endless Eight, the novels are still incomplete. When was the last news of the novel 10 status?

It's coming out "soon". No longer in limbo at least…I don't really think it was a Tanigawa versus Kadokawa situation though because the Shana novels are a bit late as well.

Speaking of the out-of-order gimmick, it would totally be appropriate for the second series, no? Rather than the three episodes of Endless Eight in a row, we'd have them all mixed up in between other episodes…would add to the effect I daresay.

It's pretty clear at this point this is another gimmick.
I'm pretty sure these episodes won't make it to DVD…instead we'll be getting the rest of Book IV in some form either aired on TV or as a straight-to-DVD OVA sale. Either way...don't lose heart, brave souls!
this loop is very haruhi-esque and i like it. too bad i watched ep 3, 4 and 5 in a row and slightly got irritated.

That said, no. I downloaded those episodes, but haven't watched them because they are so boring/repetitive with nothing new in each episode. If Kyon was slowly conquering the dimensional rewind, like the characters in Higurashi, it would be interesting to watch but as-is…no.

No, Endless Endless Eight is still going. There are some rumors that the next one will be the last, though.

haruhi is a good show i like it but i am not liking this endless eight arc that is going on.
its mostly the same crap i been seeing repeating and repeating the same thing, first kyon watches baseball, then haruhi calls, then kyon goes at the station and haruhi saying he is late like always, then haruhi saying they should go to a public pool.
i could go on about this but i am not liking this arc one bit its getting way too repeative and i mean the same events again and again, when the hell is it going to be solved, what is it that they keep on making the same events over and over again, one epsiode over the other.

Evangelion is hated now? I'm afraid I don't understand, if anything, the original ending to the anime (the "ran out of budget" ending) was the more postmodern, Endless Eight-type move, and that's practically irrelevant with End of Evangelion and Rebuild both retelling the events.

Eh, from what I can tell, Evangelion is the kind of anime that you either absolutely love, or utterly despise and consider the worst piece of crap to have ever been written.
…Though I suppose I shouldn't say that, seeing how I don't really belong to either groups. It's more like, going back and forth between "It was ok" and "It was horribly disappointing" depending on my mood, really. (Though the first Rebuild-movie was awesome, and I can hardly wait for the next one.)
…Well, enough talk of Evangelion in a Haruhi-thread. So, if the rumors are true, today's episode will be point where Endless Endless Eight actually ends. (Which I suppose would make it "Ending Eight" instead…)

Super Driver is the only anime OP that I've never skipped. Also the only one that I've downloaded onto my iPod and listened to outside of the show. I feel like I've crossed some line of fandom.
Evangelion is the type of anime where any stance you take on liking it forces you to consider fans too. Even if you like it, if you hate the fans, you end up hating the show overall. "It was a pretty good show, but the fans make it horrible". Not unlike the Gurren-Lagann fans right now in fact.
If you hate the show AND hate the fans, people will hate you right back for taking such an extremist position. "Evangelion was pretentious tripe, and the fans are overzealous sheep" would piss off anyone in the middle of the road and the fans who love the show.
The same applies for the reverse. If you absolutely love the show, you hate anyone who says anything bad about it.

Yeah, it already aired and I was just reading through Animesuki and blogs and such. I just recently started Haruhi (like 1-2 weeks ago) so this doesn't bother me that badly. I'd like to blame Kadokawa for this and not KyoAni lol but it's both of their faults right now.
