Chapter 371 "Admirable Captain T-bone" Discussion

**You know, for T-Bone's brief time and the nature of the showdown, I can't help but think that T-Bone was brought in for more as symbolism or something, because he was definitely a very powerful individual. Maybe it's supposed to say that the love for your Comrades is stronger than any Justice? Maybe I'm reading into too far, but I dunno.I like trying to sound smart.
**I had that idea too, but then I realized it was Zoro… he seems like the guy least likely for Oda to demonstrate this through. Kind of reminds me of Hiei's fight against whatever that ice Saint Beast was named, if anybody remembers that. It was a villain created and hyped up quite a bit sheerly to show what Hiei can do when somebody pisses him off (I'm pretty sure he was pissed off because the guy lacked camaraderie), so this might be similar.
I definitely think he'll have to come back, though... he was an extremely nice guy, Oda can't leave him floating around in Aqua Laguna after being sliced up by Zoro. It might be in a cover story, though.
-
The ice dragon was Seiryuu, iirc.
Well, the thing is we already know what Zoro can do. And in the previous scene he CUT A TRAIN IN HALF.
-
Well, the title says it all really, the 'admirable' Cap'n T-bone. I think he was a symbol of real justice, in the midst of gross injustice, if you know what I mean. I think when you see such a negative side of one thing for so long, i.e the Marines, Govt, ect you tend to think of them in only one light, well at least in this arc.
But, I think T-Bone's role is to remind the reader that isn't all so black & white (forgive the pun). I think with T squaring off against the train and Zoro's admiration for him, despite being defeated, is very telling of what Oda probably had in mind when he introduced him.
-
Guys, I just cannot express, regardless of the fact that it's like 4 months away and that means back to my last semester of college, how much I am looking forward to Volume 39. It is going to be one of the greatest volumes in the series.
And for the record
ZORO IS THE SHIT AND ALL WHO STAND BEFORE HIM SHALL SUFFER
-
BSotW: Zoro. Cutting a train in half.
I'll say that again. ZORO CUTTING A TRAIN IN HALF. omfgomfomgomfg.
I was kind of surprised at how quick T-Bone went down myself, but that's been debated to no ends already in the thread so I won't leave my thoughts on it. I'm more hyped about all the little easter eggs all over the place - Mr. 3, Lulu's cowlick, Kiwi going nuts over Zoro (that slayed me, oh ho ho). It's the little things that make me love a chapter - well, the big things too (CUTTING A TRAIN IN HALF) but yeah.
ocean - haha, when I saw Rashoumon I didn't think of the Kyoto gate. I thought of that Kurosawa movie instead ! (Toshiro Mifune was such a great actor) I don't remember exactly, but doesn't the term (because of the movie) carry a certain connotation ?
looks it up Apparently  "a situation wherein the truth of an event becomes difficult to verify due to the conflicting nature of different witnesses". Maybe it's like… a move that no one can tell what happens because so many people are seeing it ?
-
edited the script a little. added in zanbei and changed the translation for the zoro's last line… i tried to make it stronger, but... doesn't translate very strongly...

i think it has more to do with justice and who's right. t-bone and the marines are fighting for what they think is justice and the straw hats are doing what they think is right. your own opinions affect how you see a event.

I think it's Zanbai, not Zanbei. I remember it because I talked about it with Konis back then… I shall double check +_+
Yup, c352, Zanbai.
-
Ocean's right. It's Zambai
-
oops, i was going off my memory… which apperently isn't very good. i think i'm getting old. i'll change it. thanks for letting me know. also, which square sister is talking? and what's the cat's name?
ooshi78
-
The rab…er cat is Gonbe.
-
Gonbee. Gombee. Whatever. I don't really keep track of SS.
Don't worry, I had hard time remembering Chimney's name earlier when I was translating, too. Then I realized translating after proofreading something else all night long isn't efficient…
/me goes back to proofing.
/me dies. -
Yay, early chappie! Thanks for the translation, ooshi. This chapter was…pretty much what I was expecting to see happen. Seems Zoro doesn't even have to exert himself to kick ass anymore. XD I was disappointed that T-Bone went down so fast, but I have a feeling he isn't done for yet. Looks like the two storylines between the two groups will merge within a few more chapters.
-
hmm… i get the feeling that a lot of you think that just because zoro won with one move, that it was a easy victory... let me stress that t-bone is of the highest caliber. i don't think zoro's shown this much respect for another swordsman other than mihawk.
ooshi78
-
To add ooshi, I think Zoro showed great deal of his respect towards T-Bone in this chapter. He couldn't, though, do anything else but defeating him by his own sword; otherwise, T-Bone will be killed by Rocket Man and that is not good way to die (or at least injurred) as a swordman.
Plus, he does fear T-Bone in p11… doesn't he?
ps. I want to translate T-Bone's dialog somewhat Shakespear-ish. That's the impression I got from him.
-
Thanks to Alex for the scan; and to ooshi, ocean, and Stephen for the translations.
Hmm. Zoro was almost frighteningly badass in this chapter. I mean, splitting a **TRAIN in two? That's just insane. Always nice to see another 'drawing technique.' And, that other technique – Gyuuki Yuuzume -- was also pretty dang nifty, even if I couldn't quite tell what he was doing.
I'd really like to see more of T-Bone, and his fighting style. Or, even just a side-story would be nice. He's really quite neat... and he reminds me of Hannya from Ruroken in his face, which is always a plus. I also like that sword of his; cool all-around.
... I'll shut up now. =/**

**Ahh, that could be true. I wasn't really shooting at how it applied to the current situation so much as how it could be applied to ANY situation though (like if he used the same move in a different situation would it still be called Rashoumon if there was another large group who's seeing his attack from different angles ?) >.>;
I mean, yeah, it works for your example too, but I'm trying to be all-inclusive  (and now I'm kind of scared people will think I snitched my thoughts from Stephen 'cause of his translator's note ! aack ~ I just saw his translation @_@)
ocean - did you mean on p18 ? ^^;
-
No, I did mean p11, last cell.
-
Looking at Stephen's translation (WOW! FAST!), it looks like the marines and CP dudes in that car went to go save him, so I think he'll be alright. :)
And as for Zoro vs. T-Bone… I didn't realize it, T-Bone really IS one of the two swordsmen he's fought against that he respected. That just goes to show how great his (T-Bone's) character must be.
-
Re: Rashou-mon, I think myself as an average Japanese, and thought of Rashou-mon in Stephen's second example, not the movie.
However, in Japanese, "Rashomon" also represents the decay and corruption of culture, because the gate fell into disrepair and became a place for thieves, corpses and unwanted
babies. At least everyone learn this in Jr. High, but I don't think every kids (or whoever the reader is) watch or even heard of movie Rashou-mon unless they're hard core fans. I don't know, I might be wrong.

Ahh, I read you wrong before, my mistake. I was thinking fear as in 'respect' not fear as in 'uh-oh' From that I'd agree that he does hold him in pretty high standards.
Though dwelling on what Zoro used and what he said about respecting him… I really have to wonder now if T-Bone WON'T show up again sooner than we think. I think I might be second-guessing myself but for all of his buildup and what Zoro's been saying I don't think he was intentionally such a pushover. Now that I look at it it seems like Zoro just kind of pulled a one-shot to knock him out of the way, not truly defeating him... >>;
I dunno. Head is spinning today
-
Once again, Zoro proves he disserves the title of my favorite character. He's so cool!!!! To all those people who said Sanji was more badass than Zoro, read this chapter. And that new cow demon moves is amazing. So much cooler than his cannon moves.
although it sucks that T-bone is gone now. He was the my favorite marine this arc. So much cooler than that mutant, Wanze.

The one next to Chopper when Lulu's cowlick got him was Mos. The one that went over to Zoro was Kiwi. Zoro pulls the wemings!

**_I agree. It may have been a one hitter, but it looked like a tough one. I'm still a bit suprised this guy ranked lower than Wanze, especially since he's known to cut ships. Like steaks, even.
-
I saw no Vivi and Pell in the cover page but it's nice to see Jango, Hina and Fullbody again
There is nothing special about Chopper"s eye in page 5
This is a good chaper but I see something wierd, T-Bone is standing in the tracks, how come he did not get run over?
-
we'll see them again. they have to get back to w7 somehow.

Actually, Mos was the one near Zoro. Mah b.

Because Zoro slashed him before Rocket Man passed where T-Bone was standing.
You know in page 6 last cell, there is one guy thrown out from the train when Luffy jumped in there. Is that T-Bone? So he was thrown away, somewhat hold onto the track, but Kaiou-rui came to attack him, so he killed them. And he waited for Rocket Man to approach so (he thought) he could slash them, too.
-
It looked like a couple of regular people.
I figured T-Bone started chasing the BT as soon as it got detached.
-
Pretty good chapter, I must say. Liked when Zoro cut the train in two ^-^
-
Question, which sister is which?
Is Kiwi the one with pants or without?
-
T-Bone went down WAY too easily, dammit. He was my favorite of the train enemy designs by far.

**Kiwi- Without Pants.
Mozu-With Pants. -
wow, cool ….
zoro is great ...
in this 371 front page,
there is mr 3 pict hanged by mis. hina
whats going on with mr 3?
-
He's still on the run, and apparently right under their noses (look closely in the background)
-
yes, i see him, behind the man in swimming pool.
-
Bah I hope T-Bone comes back, seems like he is one of the awesome "non-corrupt" marines. I believe he will come up again (possibly later in this arc). (hopefully he won't dissappear like Jerry)
-
I really wonder how T-Bone would react if he knew what the Government was REALLY planning to do with the prisoners on that train.

**i agree… t-bone was running way before the rocket man got to the two cars.

-
I agree. T Bone is a sure candidate for cover story arc.
-
Because I feel like it:
MY FAVORITES OF THE NEW TRAIN CHARACTERS
- Nero (he's alright, but looks too girly… and seems like another "OMG COOL" character)
- T-Bone (a really cool character, if there were more characters he would be ranked higher overall. This chapter might move him up a rank)
- Wanze (I just love him.)
- JERRY! (That loveable guy.)
The top three, I feel, should be in a new mini story.... TEAM UP!
Edit: NOW that I think about it... Jerry should still be on the wrecked cars with the other schmucks. SO A TEAMUP IS INEVITABLE! LUCKY!
-
Jerry was cut by Zoro´s attack XD
I don´t think Nero will stand up much longer, and the same for Wanze… -
Anybody still going with the argument that Sanji has had more badass moments than Zoro?
Add me to the chorus of voices that was slightly disappointed by how easily T-Bone was defeated. I don't think we've seen the last of him though, as he seems prime mini-arc material.
Plus I get the feeling that he'll show up at Aeneas Lobby, probably just in time for Spandam to stupidly reveal his plot in front of somebody who actually gives a rat's ass about justice.
On another T-Bone related note, is it just me or is anybody else reminded of Tashigi by the way he talks? Wonder if he's her dad…
-
Thanks for the chapter and translation everybody!!!
I can see you've all been busy discussing so I doubt I'm adding anyhting new, but damn, Oda is just on a roll with these chapters lately. So much good stuff packed into such a short space, it's really something else. First off, cover story was great, and Jango wearing the pool float while blowing a whistle was too damn funny.
Luffy getting on the car and calling for Sanji with the little whisper of Usopp was kind of cute. It's nice to see how the last few chapters we've seen Luffy, he really has shown he is regretting what happened between them.
Zoro cut the train in half. Those poor government agents had no idea what was coming. At least they all seemed to be standing away from the middle.
T-Bone is really a great character. You have to love how Oda makes these powerful, yet admirable bad guys. And he is clearly powerful, as quick as the fight went, I think Zoro had to put quite a bit of strength into it. He seemed a little winded afterwards. Now the long wait begins anew…
-

Haha. Well, she definately would take after her mother in the looks dept.
BTW, sorry if I gave the impression that I thought Zoro had it easy, I know T-Bone is a worthy oponent. I was being facetious about Zoro not having to exert himself. All this ship-splitting reminds me of Mihawk. I see he's shrinking the gap between their skill level.

I had the same thought as well after seeing that.

The way I see it, he isn´t necessarily lower ranked than Wanze. It´s just that T-Bone is a captain of the Marine while Wanze is a member of CP7. So if I don´t misunderstand anything the ranking among between those two can´t be compared in a way to say who´s got the higher rank.
Besides Wanze was probably just in a "higher" car because the kitchen was in there. Would make sense IMO.@Jun 16 2005, 04:03 AM
T-Bone went down WAY too easily, dammit. He was my favorite of the train enemy designs by far.
__Well there´s still the chance for him to come back. This whole situation reminds me of the Drum arc. When the Strawhats met Wapol for the first time he was defeated easily, he was even sent to the sea though he can´t swim and yet he still managed to return and become the main villain of the Drum arc.
I´m sure T-Bone will get back. Oda put to much effort into building that character up just for getting rid of him that way. We will see him again. Though he still won´t be a challenge for Zoro, but back then Wapol was never a real challenge for Luffy either and he was the main villain._
-
I'm thinking T-Bone will return too…if you think, even if Zoro cut the train, all of them are still alive and are managing to save T-Bone... i think they will be able in some way to go to eneas lobby... or they will meet him again while they will come back to W7...^_^
-
WOW  i was supprised with the manga this week,
it's come out pretty quick  but i this it's good so i don't have to wait for another day then
Thanks for alexander and battle franky( ur link work for me )
WOW sure zolo become alot stronger now, he can even beat captain T-bone easily and cut the train into half without any problem.
love this chapter very much , for people who scan it i really thank you
