Oda's worst subject is math. Math is logic, so if you suck at math, you suck at logic. (Joking)
Oda has made mistakes in calculating from the beginning, shown since Higuma knocked down the bar's door in Luffy's hometown but having it magically fixed to Oda's disproportionation of women's measurements, to character heights, such as Luffy and Brooke. He also messed up on details such as Luffy's scar, and Zoro's bandana since the beginning. These little details are mistakes that could be avoided with a clear calculating mind that's strong in math. However, Oda's genius is not that but the big-picture kind of visionary that allows him to make stories epic and exciting.

Actually, and unfortunately for some, like you, my rants and "analysis" are a form of stress relief for me. It may seem like my ideas are coming from no where. I apologize for that since I have ADD.
Anyway, Oda has said he sucks at math in an SBS entry, when asked what his worst subject at math. He said, without doubt, math.
Math requires precise calculation with least error possible, and that, I'm afraid, is not the forte of most artists.
It's the difference of people who pay attention to little things, who end up being in science-intensive fields of work, and big picture people who create fantastic works of creativity.
With memories serve Oda does put himself down(SBS)…of course it for fun. And certain think he not gonna be too detailed, e.g.
Question: How come when Buggy split himself up there no blood.
Question: CP9 uses Zoan power yet clothes don't ripMeh cant find where it is...but thing like this is not necessary.
Most likely the zoan question can be answered by the fact that all of them save for kaku and Calipha had their Devil Fruits for a while and would have had the Govt' engineer some stretchy suits. Kaku probably borrowed one of Lucci's spare suits.

[hide]Actually, Oda said in a SBS that it would be too scary if he showed Buggy gushing blood everywhere.
D: Doesn't Buggy bleed when he splits his body up? O: C-come on… don't be difficult. He would be too scary if he started gushing blood everywhere.

Is this the Blackbeard thread?
I fixed it
Damn, I should just kill myself for that.
Ryuksgelus: you're over-thinking it. Unfortunately, Oda sucks at being calculating, and really just tries to go with the flow. Likely, if Blackbeard touch Luffy, Luffy will just retract back to his normal body. This is just because, otherwise, it'll be a pain for Oda to work with details such as tearing muscle tissue.
Guess Gear 2nd, its side-effect, and Chopper coming up with a strategy snap Oz's spine were not examples of Oda thinking things through.
Its not like torn muscle tissue is that complicated a subject it needs to be worked out. It just looks that way on paper. If Oda goes the non-retracting route Luffy will have a useless flimsy arm.

…yes. He's not thinking things through. Just like when he came up with Brooke's story way back. Just like when Ace gave Luffy a biblicard way back. Just like every cover story and its connection to the main plot.
He's totally thinking it through. I give up. It's hopeless. When I get reborn, I want to be a weed. A very annoying weed that just keeps popping back.
However, about that detail where Luffy gets grabbed by Teach, I think the parts that were not stretched would just not be able to stretch, and the parts that were stretched would be forced back to normal. That makes it so Luffy won't be missing limbs when he's Pirate King.
Or Luffy's initial ass whooping by BB turns into a huge endeavor for Chopper.

No That's not how I meant it.
I just didn't think that continuity or art mistakes has anything to do his ability to plan out his series. (mistakes such as Ace's beads dissappearing and reappearing randomly, which hip zoro carries his swords on etc)
And as mentioned he has had plans for Brook since Labbon and klaubatermann since skypiea etc.
I apologize if you feel insulted. that was not my intention.

No offense taken.
Anyway, I have made a generalization without a good reason. People who see things broadly can see details as well. They just have to take a minute to look carefully. Oda would do well to have his work inspected 100 times before it is published, but Jump manga doesn't have that kind of patience.
Anyway, since Blackbeard controls the force of gravity, one of the four fundemental forces, I wonder if there's a DF that controls electromagnetism, and one that controls material composition (control of both weak force and strong force). A super-trinity.

but luffy's shirt grows and shrinks with gear 3rd but I'm pretty sure the Govt' didn't give him that shirt
oh yeah and I have a question does anyone think Luffy will get a new power up related to spirit that would help him against BB
oh yeah igetownd I looked back at the size ups with luffy and brook and you were right
yea cause this manga needs to be completely relevant. Where is the blood gushing, the muscles tearing. The fact that building get cut behind a person and the person is just cut a little.
Seriously anyone arguing about this shit is seriously the retarded one. This is a cartoon with cartoon heroes. it is not real and won't have many applications of real. Physics, anatomy, ect. There are serious mangas out there that have this kind of detail and usage to correct shit. But shonens dont'.
The door Luffy smashed in Gate 3 was like 10 inches thick. =/
I hope Blackbeard will become the Vegeta of One Piece. While strong an eternal loser. He already got his pity win vs Ace from Oda just like Vegeta got his the first time he fought Goku. Now it's time for him to become everyone's bitch for the rest of the series
^He's building him up way too much for that. I say By the end of the series the Strawhats will kick Kurohige in an epic fight for One Piece.
Luffy vs Blackbeard (The D's Face Off!)
Usopp vs Van Auger (Sniper Battle! "Is this The End…?")
Zoro vs Jesus Burgess (Battle of Strength!)
Sanji vs Lafitte (Clash of Similar Body Types!)
Chopper vs Doc Q (Poison Battle!)

Looks good, except I always pictured Brook fighting Laffitte and Zoro fighting Burgess. Although Oda's probably going to make the final clash some gigantic brawl with old characters like Buggy, Coby and Helmeppo etc.
Crap! I forgot about Brooke!!
Brooke vs Laffite (Who is 'The Lord of the Dance'?)
Brooke and Lafitte may be related or even know each other (depending on how old Lafitte is). They're both from West Blue, both use canes (Lafitte's could be a Shikomizue too), and both seem tall, lanky, and stealthy. I wouldn't doubt they're related.
They probably come from the same kingdom. Watch, in the upcoming war we'll see Lafitte whipping out Requiem Banderole.
i think more likely they wouldn't go only against blackbeard ….it would be like mugiwara against blackbeard and a lot of marines...remember he's a shichi...
luffy against blackbeard
Usopp vs Van Auger
Zoro vs Jesus Burgess
Brooke vs Lafitte
Chopper vs Doc Q
and then it would be like Sanji, robin, franky, and nami against some super enemy....i'm thinking a fishman who can use rokushiki AND has a paramecia...lol
You're all figured out who is gonna fight who in the end huh? 500 chapters form now?Isn't that a bit predictable? That's why i don't want BB to become the final baddie it's too fucking predictable. And Oda is never predictable so im hoping for a twist. And IMV BB is a pussy , he hid in Whitebeard's shadow for decades, under his protection, licking his boots and praying , praying , praying he might get lucky someday .I wonder where he'll be now without the DF STILL on WB's ship , eating pie and bitch about it Or maybe he would finally manage to find his puny little balls and pursue his dreams?
@Mondo:
And Oda is never predictable
It would suck if things never turned out like expected.
I never said this was the final battle. I just said it would happen down the line. Maybe the Arc before the last.
luffy against blackbeard
Usopp vs Van Auger
Franky vs Jesus Burgess
Brooke vs Lafitte
Chopper vs Doc Q
By the time both crews go against each other Zoro should be ready for Mihawk or at least close. I'd see Sanji taking on someone important too or just doing something off camera as usual.
Plus this way its all the weaker male SH vs. BBs crew.
I just realized. How is Usopp vs. Van Auger going to even work…?
Van Auger fires bullets... which could take down Usopp in one hit... unless Usopp gets a gun, and even if he does, isn't this just going to be like a OHKO match...? Like who can draw their gun the quickest and fire?
It'll be like a sniper battle with The End in MGS3. They'll be in a city or forest of some kind and they will have to find each other to shoot them and also dodge each others attacks. First one hit dies. Usopp will be at a disadvantage a first because Auger can see much further but then Usopp will find out that Auger makes one fatal error in his sniping that he will exploit to his advantage.
(of course that is ALL speculation.)

lol i think more likely they'll be in like some kind of obstacle course…kind of like wat Zkaiser said....Van Auger can see much farther and shoot more lethally but he only has bullets....while Usopp has all his tricks and so on....i have a image of usopp using an impact dial or something...
I actually think it would be sort of cool if in the end Usopp somehow got Yasopp's gun. That would be pretty cool.
Don't know if this was already discussed, but if you look at Shanks, he had that scar since the beginning of One Piece, before Ace started looking for him, before BB obtain that Devil Fruit, so this all hints to that Blackbeard was strong as hell wayyyyyyyy before present time now, because Shanks had that scar when he 1st meet Luffy, so what I getting at, is that Blackbeard must be as strong as the Youkno (forgot how to spell it)!
I agree. Shanks had his scar from Blackbeard even since Luffy's flashback. Now he's basically unstoppable, with both the strongest magic power and the strongest physical strength.
^^Yeah, agree, so Blackbeard really is no joke at all, I think he's only using this Shichibukai thing just to do dirty work under the WG noses, to get closer to One Piece!
Well the question we really ask ourselves here is, how strong was shanks back then when he lost his arm…? In comparison to now and was he a Yonkou?
Well, he had to be pretty damn strong, because when the Sea King ripped his arm off, either Shanks used Arua, and the Sea King fled, or the Sea King notice who he was and fled, either way, that shows that he was really strong then!
Thats true moreover we know he did spar with Mihawk when he had both arms still was he a Yonkou and how how strong in comparison with now.
But yeah he was strong that much is known…
Blue

Yes sirzzzzz
But either way, I can't wait to see BB go all the way out with his power, bet what he used against Ace was nothing!
I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the mysterious axe guy who appeared early in the Shabondy arc could be a new member of Blackbeard's, kinda like how Lafitte went ahead to speak for Blackbeard at the world leaders meeting, and this guy could just be doing whatever.
@Preston:
I don't know if this has been mentioned,…
No, it hasn't and with good reason, I believe.
Darkaos You know Kizaru was at the marine HQ with Sengoku right? The big axe guy is most likely NOT Kizaru.
Well the question we really ask ourselves here is, how strong was shanks back then when he lost his arm…? In comparison to now and was he a Yonkou?
The easiest assumption is that Shanks was already a yonkou or very close. WB states how surprised everyone was to hear that Shanks had lost one of his arms. This means when Shanks was in Luffy's village, he had already made a name for himself. A name strong enough to be acknowledged by WB himself.

I'm not sure that's true. Given that he was i the village for a year without being hunted down by a shichibuiki or a marine. I believe he made him name after losing his arm. Though he was a fond memory of WB even before then.

What about Mihawk? We know that he was of very high standing, and likely the best swordsman then as well. Yet Mihawk refused to duel with Shanks after he lost his arm ~~ so this also adds to the proof that he must have already been of somewhat high standing. Right?

Mihawk and Shanks are friends. It'd be like Zoro asking Sanji for a duel. Thought the fact his sword can stand up to Mihawks only goes to underline why he's a Yonkou.

If Mihawk and Shanks were friends like Sanji and Zoro, then why would Whitebeard speak of their legendary duels. This doesn't make sense. Zoro and Sanji do duel, and Oda likes to show them of equal competence. However, they're on the same crew and will never have a serious fight.
Shanks and Mihawk were regarded as rivals, and probably eventually gained great respect for each other. Probably to the point that they are now "friends", but these are very different circumstances.
But, back to the point. Here's where you need to interpolate. If Shanks made a name for himself after returning with the missing arm, then the missing arm is not a big deal. There's no reason for Whitebeard (the strongest man in the world) to talk about the surprise of hearing that someone of Shanks' caliber has lost an arm while away in East Blue (the weakest sea). However, Whitebeard makes this a point, because it's so surprising. And it's not only WB, it seems like there were plenty of people that were surprised at the loss.
I just thought of a second point. Rockstar, obviously a competant Rookie, bounty of 94M. WB didn't even want to talk to this guy, and he thought he was popular enough to be recognized by WB's crew. Yet, no one knew who he was. it's only logical to assume that Shanks is already famous while he's in East Blue.
Sorry for the massive off-topic.
I think the problem is, is that the Mugiwara have no real rivals out there yet, however once you look at what this arc has set up, they will have rivals with equal goals in the new world. The Zoro/Sanji comparison was a poor one but it was the closest we've got. Once we get into the new world, should the Mugiwara end up going against one of the Supernova's a couple times for whatever reason but still get along, then there we'd have a better comparison.
In regards to Shanks' missing arm. It's like if we suddenly heard Sanji lost a leg for whatever reason. We all know of his calibre, we know he was destined to be at the pirates summit so him losing a leg now, would still be a subject for discussion ten years down the line.
I think using your Rockstar comparison, we can see the sheer difference. WB and Roger were at the top of the pirate world and i can only assume that the crews were smaller back then (i.e. not 1600), the fact that WB and Roger constantly clashed meant that everyone would know everyone reasonably well. strengths, weaknesses and names.
it's only logical to assume that Shanks is already famous while he's in East Blue.
Ofcourse Whitebeard knew him. He got to know him while battleing GDR.
Hell Whitebeard even remembers Buggy… and Buggy is (was) a nobody compared to the grand line pirates whne we saw him back in east blue.
We don't really know why he was surprised about Shanks losing the arm. It could be because he never expected someone of such strenght losing it in that weak sea OR it could be that he is surprised Shanks continues to be a pirate even with only one arm. Zeff pretty much gave up pirating when he lost his leg right? (or did he give it up for another reason? I can't remember..)
