Wow when i first saw the trailer i thought that i'll never try this game out. But my friend wanted to check this game out and i followed him and now, damn its very amazing.
Chrono Trigger DS
-
-
Beaten Lavos, did all side quests and i've beaten the omen.
All characters where lvl 50+ . My party was Magus, Chrono and Robo.
Got the first ending. -
Got this Christmas Eve. Been playing it so much lately. Right now I just beat that Hekdarn guy in the cave in the Fiend Part of the world. Right now I'm going to the Cavemen time or whatever. I hope I'm not speeding through this game too quick. It's just so god damn addictive >.<
-
Okay, beat it full clear and got the new video last night:
! That baby that Lucca finds at the end with Schala's pendant, that's Kidd, right?
-
I mine yesterday and this game is awesome. It's so much fun. I'm currently at:
! I'm right before the Tyranno Cave. I beat Magus but he was a bit tough. It took me awhile to figure out what to attack with and when.
-
@Fire Fist:
! That baby that Lucca finds at the end with Schala's pendant, that's Kidd, right?
Yup-o! It seems that every CT remake ties in a little bit more with Chrono Cross.
-
Haruka got it for me for Christmas. It's been a good 8 years since I played through the game from scratch.
It's just as good as it always was and huzzah for STILL finding new shit to do. What a remarkable piece of software. I doubt we'll ever see an accomplishment like this again.
-
Beat the game some days ago and was preparing to explore the new dungeons but while I didn't pay attention I managed to save my New Game+ on the original save file :( fail. Oh well time to try some new party combos when running through the game again >.<
-
Been playing this one on and off again since Christmas… it's just as good as it always was, yay.
Though I will be staying the fuck away from the Chrono Cross tie-in crap... just thinking about that game pisses me off to no end.
Since I played the original to death, I keep being surprised by the little things that were changed here and there from the original translation... I'm also surprised with how much of the game I've memorized. >_>;;
-
So:
! They give us a new ending with all that build-up, and even have Alf/Gil (Reincarnated Magus) in Radical Dreamers, but they completely cut Magus from Chrono Chross? That's crap… I mean, seriously, they could've made him as a secondary character, as long as they included him... who better to stop/save his sister than him?
… Anyone have a translated ROM of Radical Dreamers?
And I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and play Chrono Cross again.... sigh It's gonna be a long ride.
-
Just beat it. And when I say beat it, I mean I beat the hell out of it. I didn't demolish it, but I beat it pretty bad.
Minus the blasphemy that is the first of the new dungeons, and minus a total of 3 hours grinding at the start and again at the Dactyl Nest, the game took me approximately 24 hours. Coincidentally my ORIGINAL play through the game when I first got it on launch on SNES took me 24 hours. However, this time around I completed just about everything you can do in the game. I say just about everything because I doubt ANYONE will ever find everything to do in this game. Be it from reading every bit of dialogue from party members, finding every tab (capsule) or just finding strange shit (for example, I JUST found out about Ayla's 'weapons' and that each character can get their own Poyozo(sp) doll, I doubt it is possible to extract every detail of this insanely lovingly crafted masterpiece.
Those 24 hours were packed from start to finish with non-stop fun. Exploration, tears, memories, laughter and most importantly really creative shit. The first of the two dungeons is the PERFECT example of the game creator mind-set today:
longer = better
Bull-fucking-shit.
When I went down to get that fucker food only to find out he wanted a DIFFERENT kind of food, I was literally at my wits end.
That entire section is just a bunch of quests literally vomited into your lap with no reward whatsoever. I don't mean in terms of items (even though THEY mostly sucked too) but the design from scratch is just so lazy. One of my favorite locations of the original is the Denadoro (sp) Mountains because they're beautiful AND the design is brilliant. It's so natural it just FEELS right. Emerald mountain felt like it was constructed by some guy who never played CT and was given a bunch of sprites to dick around with.
And it wouldn't even have been THAT bad if not for the forced encounters. Notice how in the real game forced encounters play a role TO A POINT. After you reach a certain area in the story, monsters that were VERY difficult to avoid either vaish or change their 'on-rails' pattern so they can be avoided.
No such thing even by the end of the quest when you are at wits end running back and forth for goddamn fruit.
Not to mention the attack noises. Dinosaur screams are used for the Hercules Beetles. HUH!? Did someone even realize what that SFX was when they used it?
And did anyone else notice how freaking long some of the creatures take to 'reveal' themselves and initiate battle? Black Bats and the golden dinosaurs are particularly evil in this aspect as they practically wake up groggily from slumber and stretch their wings before battle or lumber across the screen at a snail's pace.
The entire section just feels completely 'off' and seems to represent the overall trend in game developing today, quantity over quality.
I know it's easy for me to come off seeming biased but as a gamer, this is still easily one of the two best games ever made.
It is the closest a game can come to being perfect.
-
I've been playing Chrono Trigger DS for about week now and I absolutely love it. Keep in mind I never played CT on the SNES (this was before I acquired a taste for RPGs), and I'm so glad that I've gotten a chance to experience one of the greatest RPGS - nay- one of the greatest games of all time!
-
I say just about everything because I doubt ANYONE will ever find everything to do in this game. WELL…I don't want to say you are wrong, but...
Capsules: There is an item list. There are a few people online going through every area in a newgame+ to collect every item
Text: Before this game came out, I knew people who had read the text dumps of the original and PS Ports to read "everything"
As for the dolls, this was first made in the PS port. It wasn't in the original.
For Ayla, you must not have grinded your characters to 99 before, then. You know about the final form of Spekkio, right? You need to be max your level to get it. If you have done that, Ayla will have had the bronze fist.
-
Oh it was totally tongue-in-cheek. I agree that in this age people will no doubt dissect it until it has no meaning.
That's cheating reading the text like that though >_<
And I didn't know that about the dolls. No wonder I never discovered it in the original ^O^ I thought I covered every inch of what you could do in that Lab to attempt to figure out a way to save Schala which would ironically go on to be… -_-

I played through so much I never had to grind they just kind of 'were' 99 one day ^o^; But the thing was I never realized it happened. Now that I think about it her critical WAS different than what I remembered it makes sense.
It was just one of the things that I never saw mentioned in any EGM2 or pulp strategy guide.

May I say that Greg often comes off as taking little shit like video games waaaaay too seriously? Maybe it's just how he words things…
Also, Greg, have you checked out the Dimensional Vortex? Because it's far better constructed than the Lost Sanctum, which is basically "extra bullshit to kill extra time." I wouldn't call it a "blasphemy," but it could've been better. The new areas in the Dimensional Vortexes are quite well done.
To FFA: Magus wasn't in Chrono Cross because they didn't feel they could properly represent him and his elaborate backstory while managing 40-some odd characters. He was GONNA be in Chrono Cross, but after awhile they said that he couldn't be properly represented amongst a cast that huge (and probably because all people would use would be Serge, Kid, and Magus, ignoring everyone else). Hence why they added the Magus element to the new final battle; to explain where the fuck he's been since CT.
Also, to this day, I simply cannot fathom the Chrono Cross hate. I just can't. It's one of those things that I not only disagree with, but am so unable to even understand the opposing point of view that it appears to border on craziness from where I'm standing. Hell, I love Cross. Love it so much I've gone back and replayed it. In fact, I've been replaying it recently (CTDS made me wanna play it again). Still, to this day, I simply cannot fathom the hate.
Well, I can see why, just not any sensible reasons to go with the "why"s I'm aware of.
-
May I say that Greg often comes off as taking little shit like video games waaaaay too seriously? Maybe it's just how he words things…
Nah, it's just the way he words things.
So, has anyone here tried out multiplayer yet? Do you get anything for winning a battle or does it just go on your monster's record?
-
May I say that Greg often comes off as taking little shit like video games waaaaay too seriously?
Video games are serious business. Don't FUCK with video games! We clear?!
-
I've gotta agree with Greg, the Lost Sanctuary was kind of annoying. I must climbed that damn mountain 20 times for those guys. It got to the point where I wanted to leave and not come back. I finished though. And I was annoyed that they left the damn statues in the damn tower up the damn mountain.
-
My first post was terrible by the way. I had a lot of ideas and not a lot of time to post and didn't organize my thoughts very well. But as a follow-up to Strongbad, it's hard to hate something you get that's extra. I mean, it is essentially a 'new' adventure featuring characters some of us have loved for over a decade. I don't hate 'it' so much as it represents the face many video games seem to have taken today which is, less quality and more crap being thrown at you, which is essentially all that is. It's the designers saying go here! Do that! Pick that up! Which is all any game REALLY is. It's us following directions based on a set of rules. But the genius is in the execution. Do you enjoy going from point A to point B? What makes it unique? Does it tell a story? I'm talking about a bigger picture than just the dungeon in the game. Very few games show the love with which they were developed which is why playing it even 13 years later, even accounting for more powerful programming, CT remains one of the deepest and most intricately crafted games I've ever seen.
I'm not talking about seeing sweat drop off your brawler's face in a fighter, or every piece of armor you equip looking different in an RPG, I mean that attention to small details about the game and about the world that make the game FUN. It's true CT lost much of the impact it had. Only doing two grinds for a total of 3 hours, it was exceedingly easy. Nowhere NEAR as hard it was the first time through for me. But that's because RPG's have changed and the way we/I play them have changed. In that aspect, one might argue that it has dulled.
But when I can look at a background on a game from 13 years ago and still be blown away with the attention to small details or laugh at how developers KNOWINGLY poked fun at their own inability to communicate subtle actions/emotions with the hardware at the time resulting in intentionally strange and awkward character animations, you just have to wonder why there aren't more games like this today.
I know I sound like an old fart but I think part of the problem is how 'easy' it is to convey something in a game these days. If you can imagine it, it's there, onscreen for you in a cutscene or realtime. In CT they relied on what they had and you filled in the blanks with your imagination. Same for the other titan FF6.
About 20 years ago people said the same thing about books. "Dang these kids with their games! Gotta see everything bleeping and in color to be entertained! Why can't you read a book! That'll make you use your imagination!"
I know it sounds exactly the same but I think our imaginations are being put on hold even more than before these days when games rival an overcome Hollywood efforts.
It's AWESOME that I can micromonitor every aspect of a grouchy old man on the battlefield in MGS4 and see the pores on his nose, but somehow…it was more fun when I was picturing those details in my head.
The MGS tank battle was....it WAS epic. And that's not an understatement for the time. I mean, I realistically took down a TANK via a videogame that looked very real. Now that scene is almost a chore because of what we've done in other games.
I'm not saying we need to change games. I LIKE that they do crazy shit. Just...it'd be nice if we got more lovingly created simple games too. With everyone trying so hard to impress us with the latest technology, I shudder to think what such minds could do if they took a step back and returned to a the world of sprites or hand-drawn animation.
-
^Old fart.
I actually thought about buying this after all. But, for some reason, I also thought for they would be selling this at a budget price. Hm.
-

Just out of curiosity Greg, what do you place as the other best game ever made? FF6?
-
For someone most likely will never get to play chrono cross ever could some one explain two things to me?
! 1 what is the deal with the baby?
! 2 after all they went through chrono and marle only get five years together and then they are dead?!? I assume this as no one could survive what happens in the secret ending am I right? -
You should try Chrono Cross if you have a PS1 or 2. The graphics still hold up pretty well today, too, which is one helluvan achievement… As for your questions...
! The baby is Kid, the female lead in Chrono Cross. Finding her basically inspired Lucca to start an orphanage, where Kid was raised, and major shit goes down.
! Chrono and Marle's fates are still unknown. Two OTHER characters from Trigger do die according to Cross, however. -
Holy Shit! Just finished the battle against Azala and the Black Tyranno! I freaked out when I first saw that huge T-Rex come out! Barely beat it though. Awesome game!
-
Also, to this day, I simply cannot fathom the Chrono Cross hate. I just can't. I really, really, really love you !
I am a big fan of the Chrono saga, but Chrono Cross is definitely my favourite. -
Just out of curiosity Greg, what do you place as the other best game ever made? FF6?
Indeed.
Re: Chrono Cross
Chrono Cross wastes time with a nonsensical bullshit web of lies and GOTCHA! moments through passing on false information to the gamer. It spends 7/8 of the length being transcendental and then suddenly in the end EVERYTHING is related. If they focused more on that aspect instead of bringing the same rotten disease from FF7's storyline that has become almost a cookie-cutter pattern today for RPG's it would have been supreme. The last 1/8 of the game was remarkable. Everything to that point except certain tunes were suicide inducing.
-
Gotta say, Greg, your complaints made no damn sense at all. Story was good, everything made sense, cast of characters was good, shit tied into Chrono Trigger in ways you didn't expect, and to top it all off, they didn't coddle to the need for blatant fanservice, instead telling a fresh, new story.
I was especially pleased that the game didn't need to use established characters as a crutch, and managed to have a good, original cast that rested on their own laurels. And hell, knowing more plot points from CTDS even added a little to the experience.
! Seeing Porre's huge military might, and knowing it's Dalton that's behind it all was pretty trippy…!

Oh okay, well if it didn't make any damn sense I guess I'll just keep my opinions to myself since my opinions evidently don't mean a damn to you. I'm sorry to have bothered you with my damn nonsensical opinions.
Wait no, that didn't come out right. What I meant to say was, I don't agree with you at all.
There we go.

Is FF6 that good of a game? I may get it if it's good. Also to be on topic, I've just got a few more things to do in this game and I'll be done. Then I can start playing the FF4 remake.

FF6 is amazing, regardless of the jealousy people have for the series and disregard good gameplay, and instead "bash" it.
FF6 had an ending that made me almost cry.
-
FF6 was good, but suffers from a similar problem FF7 had, where people that love it tend to love it too much, and do it a disservice by overrating it to everyone.
That aside, it was fantastic. Definately one worth playing.

Hmm, it is quite a paradox. I mean, how can you overrate the perfect game? Well, okay it's not perfect (that distinguishment belongs to OoT), but still I don't think you should let a few rabid fans spoil the fun. It really is an awesome game. Of course I can't talk too much, I haven't even finished the darn game
-

Thank you, and good night. ;)

Halo
Gears Of War
Dark Knight
Twlight…...

One PieceEveryone does it with everything.

True. That's why I'm always upfront about the fact that I practically run on hyperbole. ;)

yes. yes you should. and i totally understand that problem of people over-hyping something, but this game is truley awesome. I actually think i like it better than chrono trigger.
facepalms nobody man good god man!! go beat it. night now!! that's your homework for today. honestly! go! do it now!
-
Twilight isn't critically acclaimed tho. Stuff like FFVI, The Dark Knight or Gears of War are. But, yeah, I never really understood why people "let a few rabid fans spoil the fun". Who cares if something is being overhyped? It has no effect on quality of a product itself.
Still, I haven't beaten VI yet . One day I will. One day. Hopefully that one day will also be the day when VI is re-released in glorious 3D…

That being said, everyone should play FF5 ;)
-
Twilight isn't critically acclaimed tho.
Well critical acclaim particularly with movies isn't as important as fanboy acclaim.
-
Twilight doesn't get critical acclaim (for the book OR the movie) because it doesn't deserve it, really. It's just the newest goth-love thing the tweenagers have latched onto. But I digress.
I finally got Chrono Trigger DS for Christmas. Now let's see if this game lives up to the hype!
-
Fan_girl_ acclaim. Twilight doesn't have fan_boys_. And hell, even the lead actor in the movie hates the thing. That's how you know something sucks ass.
That being said, everyone should play FF5 ;)
God I hope they do a 3-D remake of that one on the DS, next. It's been too damn long since I've played it, and I really enjoyed it. Plus, y'know, Mah Boi's in it.
-

Haha, really? Maybe that explains why he looks so sour throughout the whole film. (Yeah, I saw Twilight if you ever get a chance pass on that)

Same here, and as long as Dissidia is printing Squeenix enough money, Theres still a fighting chance. (www.instantrimshot.com)
Ironically though, one of main developer's for Dissida has V as his favorite title, a possible explanation of why theres quite a hefty amount of attention around that game's universe.
And just to contribute to the actual topic at hand, I got Chrono Trigger as a Christmas present, which came with not only a poster but a CD (2 tracks) of orchestrated music from the game. I'll give it a rip if anyone's interested. ;)

Chrono Trigger is truly a great game, you won't be dissapointed.
Fan_girl_ acclaim. Twilight doesn't have fan_boys_. And hell, even the lead actor in the movie hates the thing. That's how you know something sucks ass.
Yeh, even the director of the first movie hated it, he even quit because of it.
And Unfortunatly, I know people that are boys that LIKE twilight, every time I ask them why they give the most idiotic responses ever, damn, anything can be popular these days eh?
-
Twiligh is basically like any other Harlequin-romance drivel that infects the shelves out there (I work in a bookstore, I know); the only difference is that it's apparently got some moderately well-balanced vampire lore in it and it's written with a modicum of good writing style.
The rest is pretty much cookie-cutter though. I MIGHT read it for the lulz, but I doubt it. I'd rather read the new Brian Jacques novel.

-
I got it, too. It's just two tracks; an orchestral version of the main theme, and a medly.
