How did you get into one piece?
-
I got into it through Shonen Jump.
Is shot in the heart by a crossbow
I regret that I had one life to waste in front of video games!
-
The Singaporean dub whom someone on IRC said was even better than 4Kids dub ^^
-
My story of how I got into ONE PIECE:
(a classical music plays)In Sept 1999 I saw an dub AD on Digimon, after frist two episode I became hooked on the series.
Before you can say "What ta Hell? What does this has to do with One Piece?" Well we all know Toei that animated One Piece, it also animated Digimon (same goes with Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball and Yugioh!) At that point I was so interested with Digimon storyline that I tried to track down the Toei site in hoping to find out more.
After visiting that site from time to time untie at Nov, 1999 guess what I found in the Toei site? (Drum beats) Ya get it, Behold! the picture of Luffy.
At that point I don't know the hell it was called, when they released clip of the Digimon movie, they include in the short movie clip of a ship, an laughing brown guy and Luffy saying something I don't get what he saying cuz I'm deaf and I don't read Japanese or do I understand Japanese.
I always saw Luffy in differant angles (Holding his hat, giving an suprised look or Luffy standing sidways smiling.) Luffy was the only guy I ever see in the Toei site, I never saw Zoro, Sanji, Nami and Ussop.
Pass 4 years from 1999-2004 I never research on that show nor did I ever showed interst in that show untie July, 2004 I got a english Dragon Ballz Manga did I find (Drum Beats) Luffy! in the end of the Manga pages.
Well looks like its out in America, Whooz! in Aug, 2004 4kids is releasing the dub of that show and the frist time I find it was called One Piece!
After wacthing the frist dub episode I've already experiance the dub flaws of Digimon so I'll reather see if they did it rigth so I chacked in One Piece TV Tome page and saw the picture of Luffy this time with Sanji, Nami, Zoro and Ussop with him.
(Later I checked in the Anime Network site and found an picture of Luffy, Nami, Zoro, Sanji, Ussop and this time there are two new characters that I later found out it was Chopper and Nico Robin).
On day in the Mall comic store I found the english One Piece Manga and for the frist time I saw the word "Eiichiro Oda" I briefly read the Manga and it was differant from the Anime(That is because Oda cant contorl the Animation) and I thougth Buggy was a grumpy ghost clown(Now I know he's not, why can't he shove the Bara Bara fruit up of his ass when Shanks spooked him? ).
Later in One Piece TV Tome site I found the site called Arlong Park and starting to browse around learning more of the series and catching up with the current Toei episode and the manga chapter. The frist chapter of One Piece I ever been in was 340.
Now here I am, Knew much about One Piece and been catch up with the current Toei episode and the current manga chapter. And now I'm an memeber of this forum, the 4kids dub is what got me intersted and I respect the orginal material form Oda and I'm disgusted at the dub.
THE END
-
A friend showed me some K-F episodes.
-
Through the American Shonen Jump. I hated it at first though, since the first few chapters I read of it were from the godawful Buggy arc. It wasn't until a friend convinced me to read ahead and I finished the Krieg arc though, that I became a OP fanatic.
-
Yes, I got into One Piece on the 4Kids dub.
I was watching Sonic X, I saw a commercial for a pirate cartoon, and, loving pirates as I do, I was interested.
Somehow I must have recognized the potential from the dub and went online for more info. I started reading manga scanlations and later started watching the KF subs.
I guess 4Kids is good for something. -
my friend told me all about it. He has so many DVDS that he bought on the internet on E-bay for 2 cents cuz no one bidded for them lol.
-
It was about a year and a half ago, I bought an anime magazine (the only one I have ever bought) because I wanted something new to watch. The issue had a feature called "Top 10 Animes You Will Never See" or something along those lines. One Piece ranked in as most likely with a 2 to 1 chance of being brought to America (Naruto was second with a 3 in 1 chance). I read the article that described One Piece. I was already chuckling when I spotted the Straw Hat's pirate flag, read about Luffy's ability, etc. This article made me hunt down subs on KaZaA of all things.. I watched HK subs up until episode 25 or so, and then I stopped because I just had no idea what the heck was supposed to be happenng anymore. A few weeks later, someone introduced me to KF and my lvoe for One Piece was instantly restored.
-
thx to Shonen Jump ;)
-
I actually first saw it a while ago, in 2000, I think. I was checking out import games and saw the first Grand Battle. I thought it looked kinda cool, but I never bothered to really learn about it. Then, when they released Shonen Jump, I saw it and a few other series I'd only heard a bit about. I thought Naruto and One Piece were alright, but they'd never place higher than Hajime no Ippo or Dragonball in my mind.
I didn't check it out again until I heard that it was the best selling manga in Japan, and saw omae's site. I then checked out K-F, and then found scans.
-
Initially a friend recommended it to me, I was on dial-up at the time & couldn't be bothered downloading 200mb episodes. So I read the manga for a little while & eventually caught onto the anime when I got broadband.
Been almost two years since I first discovered One Piece, I remember I first saw it in March or April, so yeh getting close.
-
well… when I accidentaly see the one piece anime shown by local television. I fell in love to this series after seeing 2 episodes and like it even more after Robin came :P
-
Two years ago I was searhing on a website about animes for a new show to watch. I came a cross One piece, downloaded the first episode and hated it. It felt really childish and I only saw the opening before I desided to do something else. Then one year ago, I gave the manga a try and to my suprise loved it.
Therefore I downloaded every KF fansub and the rest is a one piece love story.
-
Yea…..........Shonen Jump Issue 0.
I was at Big Apple Anime Fest when I got this. They had preview for some mangas. For One Piece, it was where Luffy did Gomu Gomu no Fuusen and bounced the bomb back at Buggy. I was like, "What the fuck?" After Issue 1 came out, the pirate slang annoyed me. Luckily someone showed me a fansub of ep 1, and I enjoyed it. Luffy is a fun character to watch. -
The Shonen Jump magazine, I started out only buying DBZ graphic novels but then I bought an issue of the magazine, I read One Piece and here I am.
-
I was reading a Shonen Jump volume, one fine Japanese summer afternoon a few years back, found One Piece, and been addicted ever since.
I can't vote on the polls for some reason, but who cares.
-
Heheh, The way I got into One Piece is (about September-ish) my friend went running down the school hall, shouting that sheâ€d found the greatest book ever, and shoved it (American, Viz) into my face. I began to like it, and I still love it, but my friend, who has a short attention span, has moved on to something else.
-
I found One Piece by reading a text about it at first. Later on I found a few pictures and thought it was interesting, so then I found the msn.group manga site, I began to read a few chapters and…. here you go.
question is how what did people expect of One Piece at first? What did you think of the characters?
-
american shonen jump when it first came out
-
Was in the comic store when I saw it on a shelf.
Thought it was interesting and the rest is history. -
Some1 on the huge LAN-party "The Gathering" got the first movie. At first, I dind't notice the quality of the series, but I got touched by Zoro's coolness. Mr. Bushido: u r The One (壱番 - ichiban) B)
-
Well… I used to be (And still am, deep down) a frighteningly huge fan of Dragon Ball. That's how I stumbled across Greg Werner's DBZ site, which I avidly visited for a long time. Then, I couldn't help but notice how the webmaster's attention started to shift over to this series called ''One Piece'', with him praising it about every other post or so.
A very long story made short, I couldn't understand why everyone was so crazy about One Piece and decided to check out some of the anime. I loved it! I watched every episode I could get my hands on, borrowed, bought, whatever. Well, that certainly was an awesome series.
Then, even later, I finally stumbled across the first volumes of the manga, in my local Japanese bookstore. I figured what the heck, bought them, read them... Became obsessed... Bought every single volume...
And by the end, I was brainwashed and was convinced One Piece was the single most brilliant series every to be conceived. And I still am.
It now holds a special little place in my heart. Swoons

The scanlated manga.
Needed something new to read after I had caught up with HxH and Naruto… And now I sometimes go weeks without reading those, but I always watch for and pounce right on a new OP raw/script/scanlation. ^_^ -
about a year ago, when i moved to this flat, i was watching the german channel rtl2, which we have in this house for some reason via satellite. it airs a lot of anime, and i somehow ended up watching them, though i don't understand the language.
and amongst all of them, one piece was the one to caught my attention. it seemed stupid at first, and i couldn't understand what an earth was going on, because i jumped on board in middle of the little garden arc.
still, i kept watching, on a daily basis, and it swirled me around it's little finger when time passed by without me really noticing. my addiction just kept growing, and eventually i just had to admit to myself that i was deeply hooked.i just realised today that around these times, it's mine and one piece's first anniversary.

About 3 or 4 years ago on Italia1.
-
I first noticed it in the american Shonen jump. Picked up a copy of One Piece: Tressure Battle and noticed how many colerful and interesting characters there were which led me to track down the HK DVDs on ebay and thats when I fell in love with it. Later I found arlongpark.com, that REALLY made a fan out of me and through them found out about the manga scans and began downloading. And recently broadband became availabe where I live so thanks to this cable modem I've been downloading the series.
-
US Shonen Jump. I didn't think much of it at first, but then again, it was at the Buggy Arc when I first saw it. Now I know very well that the first few arcs are nothing compared to later arcs. :P
-
First time reading it was in scanlation, but it discouraged me reading it since it was in English ^^; ocean is a bad English reader.
After that, I encountered Japanese raw at #raw-manga and started reading it, and got into it. Now I have all the Tanko :) -
Well… !
I first stumbled upon the site "Destination: PARADISE" one day, browsed through it, and it temporarily piqued my curiosity. Though, that faded eventually.
Then came omae's site, which was certainly very enlightening, though that too was pushed out of my head eventually.
I first read One Piece in Issue 0 of the American SJ. Back then, I recall, I wasn't much into anime... and had never read manga. At first I just shrugged off One Piece but, as time wore on, I continued to follow it in American SJ.
And then, somehow, someday, I got hooked. Badly.
I believe it was during the Kuro arc that I searched out information for One Piece. Eventually, I found Arlong Park, which is when I started to become hooked. Around the time that the Kuro arc was in full bloom, I believe, is the time that I began to read ahead. I basically skipped everything, after learning of a few basic facts of the series, and started to read the weekly scans.
Sometime after the Luffy-Usopp fight, I started to read ahead, and... here I am. I've read all the chapters so far, and I'm up to about episode 130 in the anime.

My family hosted Japanese exchange students for a few years. Our first border, Ayaka, brought a few Weekly Jump issues with her. My very first contact with One Piece was Chapter 214… all~ the way back in '01. I've been in love ever since. <3
-
Black border flashback….
I was (am) a fan of Dragon Ball and one day while searching I came across an interview with Oda and Toriyama. I found out that Oda was inspired by Dragon Ball so I decided to check it out.
On Google I found zipped scanslations of Vol1,2,3, read through them and enjoyed the story. In my search for more of the manga I found the msn site and started reading more. I accidently clicked on one of the chapters with Eneru in it. Instantly I became enthralled with Eneru's character design and vowed to keep reading up to that point.
I was a little further along when I came across a thread on a website entitled 'Luffy VS Usopp'. I made another vow to read to up that point...
Eventually I caught up to the raws and in doing so became completely hooked on One Piece.Flashback end.

I first stumbled upon the site "Destination: PARADISE" one day, browsed through it, and it temporarily piqued my curiosity. Though, that faded eventually.
I remember that site. I'd read the (little) info they had, and until I saw the third episode of the anime, I had taken Nami for Vivi and Sanji for Chopper. :P
-
JUst sorta happened through magazines, general anime websites, as such. No one thing. I had always know about it, but never really took the time to check it out and when i did, i was HOOKED. Of course you all know what im talking about though, dont you? ^_^
-
i whent to japan as an exchange student and we were sitting down after dinner and my japanese family turned on one piece now i can speek like 4 japanese words (none of them where in the episode) it was right after they had gotten into the sky and they got attaked well i saw luffys arm streatch and not being able to understand anything they where saying just asumed they where exagerating his punch. but everyone keept telling me what a great show it was so when i got back i started to download it i ended up with episodes 1 11 12 66 and one of the episodes durring the apis filler. me being very esily amused thought this looks interesting but left it at that. later i was at the book store and there was the first volume of the manga so i bought it and read it like 4 times along with translations with no pics up to some where around little garden while waiting for the next one. latter after getting my friend hooked (that was her very first anime and now she is also a crazed fan  ) she found a web site wih scanlations so i could see the pics too.
okay well i think i have rambled long enough ^_^ -
Well, this one first saw One Piece in Shonen Jump when it was brought to America. Though I didn't have much interest in it at the time but I did like it cuz I kept buying Shonen Jump just for OP. That was maybe a year ago.. or more.. I dunno. I really got into it when my friend bought be like the first 50 some episodes for my brithday last fall. I'm so broke. But, being the Toriyama fan that I am, this show really hit home and I love it!!! giggles
-
I'd heard about it here and there in Toyfare and video game magazines, but had never really seen much.
Then one day on Toriyama's World (probably while checking to see if they had ever released a new chapter of Yaiba or Zombie Powder, if that's what they were working on at that point, it might even have been Cashman or Doctor Slump, it's been a while), I see that Viz is going to be releasing a stateside version of Shonen Jump. So I order… let's see... I think it was in October, so about six months early and wait.
Finally I get the first issue, as I read through the first issue I see Dragon Ball Z and Sandland, both of which I knew very well, Yu-Gi-Oh (which was a real surprise to someone only familiar with the later show), Yu Yu Hakusho (which changed my mind about that particular show, though I still prefer the manga), and then something completely new.
I read through the introduction, got to the point where Roger smiled at death, and fell in love with the series right then and there. A sort while later, I found Stephen's site and read pretty much the whole series through Skypiea and have been following it ever since.
Last August or so, I started poking around on the internet for One Piece again and came across a site called EastBlue.net. After that, I started downloading the newer issues beginning sometime around chapter 330 while beginning to collect Volume 24. I mainly focused on getting the older issues first.
On another note, while looking at the color scan of that page that I saved off the web, I now notice that you can apparently see what looks like Roger's head soaring straight up off the execution stand in the background of the big crowd scene. That might be something on the building behind the stand, but the object really looks like it has a speed line connecting to where his body was, which would indicate that it came off of him.
At any rate, it looks like a pretty big spray of blood is coming out of him.
-
I use to surf One Piece website before Shonen Jump had came. So I loss interesting that when I brought the graphic novel and read it.
-
I admit I was one of those who got addicted through Shonen Jump (January Issue for 2003, which came out in December '02). I read it over, realized I adored Shanks and Luffy was just plain great. Continued to buy Shonen Jumps until I was well into the Buggy Arc – where I assimiliated several of my friends into adoring the series. We pooled our money together, and within a month, we'd owned episodes 1-109 in HK sub form. Over the coming months, I began to collect Japanese volumes of the manga; I couldn't get enough One Piece! Over 2 years and a hoarde of OP collectables later, I can openly say, I'm still hooked.
-
Oh, let me tell you, I had the weirdest way ever of discovering One Piece. A few years ago, my friend and I were in love with the e-mail guru guy on about.com, and I talked to him online a few times. One time, I was talking about how awesome pirates were, and he sent me a link to a One Piece manga site. I thought it looked pretty cool… and then... I forgot about it for a few years. X_x.;; Then I went to Japan last year and my host sister was all, "One Piece!! WATCH!!! <3" So.... I did and the rest is history, I guess. o_O.;; I also got to tour the Fuji TV station, which was cool. I think they had a big One Piece mural on the wall there... too bad we weren't allowed to take pictures.
-
Shonen Jump started it for me.
-
For me, I began to like One piece after playing "One Piece Grand Battle" then after the watching DVD set I was HOOKED BABY!!! ONE PIECE ROCKS ALL THE WAY!!
-
I used to be a Yugioh fan (not as much now). About 3 years ago, while surfing the web, I found out that YGO manga (oh geez, I didn't even know what manga was back then… I searched for YGO 'comics' xD) and found out that it ran in Japan's Shonen Jump. Of course SJ had not reached America yet, so I was like "....crap." One day I was having a conversation with a friend about comics and she told me that she had just bought a magazine called Shonen Jump. I was like "No way... In English?" Long story short, I borrowed it (issue #2 I believe) and read it. When I first read OP, it struck me as a very odd manga. It didn't even seem Japanese because of the style. When the Kuro arc started to get good (and YGO finished with Duelist Kingdom), my tastes changed. :P
-
Shonen Jump when it was cool, like the Morgan arc when Morgan call Luffy "The Bastard in the StrawHat." When Luffy cause a disturbance in the Marine base.
-
From what i read mine is a little different way of getting into One Piece
Little over 2 years ago i was downloading loads of AMV from kazaa and one of them was One Piece clips to AFI - Last Cares.
I thought it looked pretty interesting but with finishing up school pretty soon thus only having dialup at home i decided not to check it out having already enough fansubs was watching currently that i had my dialup connection downloading 24/7.
Last March when highspeed was finally available in my town (only 768/256 but worlds better than dialup) i decided to check it out and went to find k-f cause i had found out that they were doing it. Downloaded several eps and reallyu got into the series and have been hooked since.
-
I was on Pojo.com's old Digimon boards (before they were axed) a few years ago and saw Chopper on someone's sig. I remember looking at it and thinking, "A bear? With a pink top-hat? What a weird series." And that was that.
Fast forward to last summer. I was at a Borders in Indianapolis, and saw the first volume of OP released by Viz. I was bored, so I decided to check it out. I was hooked. And I now know the Chopper is not a bear; he's a tanuki. :D
-
Well, back in my Junior year of college (more than two years ago now) a bunch of friends and I lived on a floor of a building whose previous tenants were a bunch of frat brothers. I guess they had gotten subscriptions to several magazines for more than 1 year because we would always get a bunch of magazines in the mailbox for the frat, TEP (Playboy, SI, Maxim, etc..) Well I think it was around December of 2002 when, out of the blue, we recieved the very first issue of Shonen Jump, while I enjoyed all the manga which they had, I could tell that One Piece was something really special. I would read it every month before I moved out about 6 months later (I always read One Piece last just cause I knew it would leave me with the best taste in my mouth).
So after I stopped getting Shonen Jump, I found K-F and watched all that they had, then wanted more and downloaded all the manga and now I'm stuck waiting patiently for new issues and episodes.
-
Well, the first time I saw one piece is from my friend when he play his PS.I noticed that the character were hilarious especially Luffy… ... :D
-
first time i knew one piece is when i played one piece grand battle 1… i thought it was crappy at first
