Yeah, well, I consider rude to fall into ignorance.

Yeah, well, I consider rude to fall into ignorance.
Ignorance is ignorance. Racism is racism, Buuhan.
Prejudice might be a better word for her actions
Yeah, well, I consider rude to fall into ignorance.
Making a joke about americans isn't racism you dunce.
Lol
This is a joke right? There’s no way they ever read Dragonball? Canada:
This is Dragonball? What a farce.
U.K.:
This annoying movie will destroy Dragonball’s legend!
U.S.:
I watched Dragonball since I was little…the ‘Dragonball’ part in the title is an utter lie.
Belgium:
Learn some shame Hollywood!
France:
Are they gonna sell it at Comiket 75?
Holland:
Is this like the Star Wars version of Dragonball?
Japanese fans’ comments followed suit in decrying the farcical movie:
It looks like a B-Grade Kung Fu movie…
Don’t they feel embarrassed for making this?
I think (movie adaptations) of Japanese anime should be left to Japan.
Bulma looks like Rambo fighting with those guns.
How did the French guy know about Comiket?
Hollywood sure is shameless. Just so that it’ll sell better, they destroy the original story. Why didn’t they just start from the very beginning with a different property?

Heh…even globally this movie is being bashed.......
@Yusuke:
Your so funny :/
Are you Kuwabara?
No, I mean that he's scary and nuts. Fucking brilliant writer, but also not a guy that I'd ever want to run into in a dark alley.
What're you talking about, how could you be afraid of a guy like this-
I personally wouldn't mind meeting him in person for a pint or a drink.
He made them, but he doesn't own the rights to them. As such, he has no veto rights to any movie adaptations.
I worried if that were the case :/
He's against the principle of movie adaptations, so there's about zero chance of him ever helping out in any way, shape or form.
I see, that totally sucks as his input could've made the movies better. …I think.
So moneyhats are not something that he gives a damn about.
Well that clears that up.
Maybe he dislikes adaptations so much because he feels that he and only he is capable of giving people a good and enjoyable story in book form and feels that's the only way that people should familiarize themselves with his works.
kinda sounds a bit egotistical
Doubt that is the case, maybe it has to do with how some adaptions drop/omit some important stuff or stray away from the original work's main concept. I mean hell the moment I saw what they removed from the 3rd Harry Potter movie, I refused to watch the later ones on account that they will remove some other stuff that I either liked or were character-related.
But put in a more simpler response it might be because of the changes.
Pretty much, I think the way it works is that an author could spend a long time creating his work, and then when adaption time comes, some other person (script writer/director?) may take less time to make an abridged version of the author's work or may even change it completely or such.
Movie audiences are made up of a different demographic than comic book readers, so naturally the movie must cater to the audience in mind. Even if you feel the changes were unnecessary, ask yourself if you're seeing things from a casual movie viewer or a casual comic book reader POV. Even the casual comic book reader wouldn't be able to appreciate something, say, extremely influential for a certain franchise, like say Moore's The Killing Joke, it might be the same situation with V: only someone who's really into comics could see the original for what it is.
Not necessarily, in V for Vendetta's case, they could've actually followed the main concept of the book (facisim vs. anarchy), I can personally see the book translated into movie form following that concept.
LXG on the other hand after reading the book, I find it quite difficult to actually adapt it.
I'll wait and see Watchmen for my judgment on that.
However, if an adaption comes out to be quite different than the original version, you're pretty much giving the incorrect idea about the original version.
Speaking of which, the 300 movie version although good, had scenes with Leonaids' wife which were never in the book, guess they just didn't want to make the movie feel like a sausage-fest. …but even that addition seemed good and didn't heavily affect the main plot. Instead it gave a somewhat good insight to how Spartans' society were back then.
It's the same case with Dahl and Travers. Tolkien also reputedly didn't want to see movie or video games of his work, but he was far less hostile than the former two.
Umm…Tolkien actually was open for adaptions of his work, but was critical on how it would be adapted…then again I got this from Wikipedia.
Get ready to lol-

He looks so incredibly goofy, it's actually painful to look at.
Especially that last cover… XD
And once again I find myself wondering what rodent crawled up on Chatwin's head and died.
This Moore guy interests me.
What movies has he written?
This Moore guy interests me.
What movies has he written?
He mostly writes for literature and comic book, some of his popular or well known works include-
Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Watchmen, Superman: For the man who has everything, The last Superman story/stories, Batman: The Killing Joke, Skizz
There are others that I might not have mentioned but those are some books to consider reading.
Back to DB; who here is watching it for the asian chicks?
I like Mai, but so far Chi Chi's acting looks sorry as hell. But she is good Eye candy.
Speaking of which, anyone finds it ridiculously hilarious that when ChiChi asks Mai "WHO ARE YOU?!", we immediately get a fight scene?
Chatwin seems to have some muscles going on in the last picture. Wonder if it's photoshopped or if he had to work his ass off for this film.
So I just heard about the Avatar live action movie. If they can make Avatar live action exactly like the series, why not Dragon Ball?
That kind of ticks me off. Dragon Ball definitely has a large fan base then Avatar, and Avatar didn't need to turn into an elementary school kid who shoots air balls at people. It's just straight up Avatar in live action.
Too bad I have no idea who is playing Aang, sounds like it was some random kid at a calling call. But why couldn't they do that with Kid Goku. So dumb.
I haven't been keeping up to date, but what makes you think the avatar LAM is keeping everything exactly? Last I checked hardly any info about it was known. But regardless how it sounds, Avatar is a lot more "practical" than Dragonball.
I know the director is M. Night.
That man takes risks, therefore the Avatar movie will rock balls.
But…the Avatar cast is all white.
This is the best post I've ever seen on Imdb.
For those non-Asians that don't get it, I'll explain the base reasons Asians are upset about White actors being cast.
But first, an obligatory disclaimer:
1. This is a discussion on race, so someone's gonna get upset. There's just no way we're all walking away from this happy. Deal with it.
2. I admit rightout that I'll be using generalizations and exagerations.
3. I might use labels: Asian, White, Black, Inuit, Hispanic, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah. And they might not be the most politically correct. If you will actually be harmed by this, don't read.
4. I'm not saying this is completely how I feel. But someone probably does. Like I said, exageration of my "outrage." I don't go around whining about the "gaijin devils" in real life. Really, I have friends of different races.Ok? So, here's my rant:
We're not just complaining that "Hollywood doesn't think we're good-looking and popular enough to lead a movie." Nor the classic, "We're stuck playing stereotypical background roles again." There's more to it than an uproar that an Asian actor/actress is not getting better work. But that's still an issue.
Take the series "Kung Fu" for example. It is said that Bruce Lee created the concept for the series, intending to be the lead. It would've been his leap into American stardom after years of playing the subservient Kung Fu sidekick/henchman. Instead, the network gave the role to David Carradine, with Bruce getting no credit.
I have nothing personal against David Carradine. I think he's a good actor, and he's had good relations with the Asian-American community. But I did find it puzzling that he was chosen to play Kwai Chang Caine in "Kung Fu" after learning that he isn't really Asian. That's right, not even part Asian. The closest thing in his blood is Native American. Added to this controversy is the fact that he didn't even start serious martial arts training until after being cast. A mixed-Caucasian novice martial artist to play a Shaolin Monk? Granted, I've never seen an episode of the original series, just the continuation. It was before my time, so maybe it's not my place to complain. But in the 70's, lot's of Asian people did.
Now, history is repeating itself with possibly three Caucasian rookie "fighters" to play martial heroes in an Asian-based world. Someone else already mentioned how much extra training and use of stunt doubles would be necessary for their roles. And there's still the possible insulting use of "Yellowface."
But perhaps what's more offensive but less obvious is how these movies portray the cultural mixings of Asians and non-Asians. It comes down to letting us be good, strong representations ourselves and our culture. The Avatar world is clearly based on Asian culture. But now its going to be occupied, led, and saved by white people. If you don't get what's so wrong about that, I'll break it down for you right here.
A lot of Hollywood Martial Arts movie that had Asian themes but non-Asian heroes, typically followed a pattern that somehow reveres Asian culture, but demeans Asians themselves. You know the one about the white/black/latino guy who wants to learn martial arts even though most Asians are against it, but he does learn, and defeats all the bad guys? Yeah, that's the one. See, you think that the message is -
"Let's all share our ways with each other, and everyone can live better in harmony."
And maybe that was the intended message. I don't fault anyone for trying to say that. But what some of us are seeing is -
"Let us in, little people, and we'll make life better for you."
Basically, the White Man's Burden.I have no animosity towards non-Asians learning Eastern Martial Arts in real life. A lot of my white friends are people I met in Wushu class. It's just the idea of "the White Man can become more Asian than Asian" and that we need them to master our ways for us that has us upset.
See, with Aang now being played by a Caucasian, we're subjected to the usual "white guy saves the day" plot:
The strongest Asian fighter(s) go bad. - The Fire Nation starts the war to conquer all nations. The good Asians are not enough to defeat the bad ones. - The Air Nomads are wiped out, and the Water Tribes and Earth Kingdom are struggling to defend themselves.
An outsider (usually white) comes and is met with distrust, and rejection. - In Aang's absence, the world has changed so that it's practically foreign. Sokka was suspiscious of Aang.
Those that rejected the Westerner soon need his help and must swallow their pride and usually become a sidekick. - Sokka and Katara can't defend their own village, need Aang's help, and join him on his quest.
When the foreigner is accepted, he begins to learn Asian martial arts and culture very proficiently. - Aang masters three elements within one year.
The good Asians are established as the ones who help the "white guy," while the bad Asians are marked by cruelty, arrogance, intolerance, archaic tradidtions and warped senses of honor. - Fire Nation believe themselves superior, conquer and exploit without a second thought, "needlessly" duel to the death in Agni Kai, and are trained to be so since childhood. Zuko is evil until he joins Aang.
Finaly, the foreigner is able to defeat the bad guys and save the day, proving to be stronger as a fighter and in morals. - Aang saves the world and shows mercy to the Fire Lord.
Think about it. Even though they try to honor Asian cultures, at the same time the Asians themselves are portrayed weak people. They cannont deal with their own corruptions or protect their own homes. Their only hope is help from a Westerner. This subtley condescending view has persisted through various movies - "The Last Samurai," "Enter the Ninja," "American Shaolin," "Showdown in Little Tokyo," and even the recent "Forbidden Kingdom."Probably most of you think I'm just blowing hot air. And I have no illusion that I'm changing anything with this rant. I just felt the need to express and explain the disappointment that I and others feel towards the (intentional or not) racial disrespect that this movie may make.
Feel free to respond. Agree, disagree, or accuse me of being a whiny, Asian troll. "You're right! Why didn't I see it before?"
"Oh, it's not so bad. Just enjoy the movie!"
"You're wrong! Suck it up, ya baby!"
Let it come.
What gets me about that is that there isn't a single white person in the original series. :/
^lol, I felt the same about "the last samurai" and I'm not even asian.
He's also forgetting "the last dragon" where everything is reversed. :ninja:
I know the director is M. Night.
That man takes risks, therefore the Avatar movie will rock balls.
Like a kick to the nuts?
Why were you banned anyways?
Also, don't forget, Goku wasn't Asian. XD
Bravo, bravo. A fine rant it is.
Also, Buuhan1 - that's a technicality. Goku's an alien, so he could look like anything - frankly, he has just as much chance of looking Japanese as he does having tentacles, three fingers on each hand an an oversized skull.
Toriyama designed him as a human originally, then ret-con'd that into him being an alien. But regardless of the origin, he's meant to be Japanese in every way except what makes him special.
In most anime/manga, aliens living among normal Japanese don't seem to upset them in the slightest. Japan is a culture that is very concerned with "segregating" people and so would be very adept at recognizing "people who aren't Japanese". That would be a good argument for saying the aliens look pretty darn Japanese, wouldn't it?
Again, DB is a totally alien subject to me but I still thought it took place in an alternative universe anyway. Where there are no Japanese or other nationalities of real world.
Bravo, bravo. A fine rant it is.

I'm gonna have to agree, not that I really have any problem with a white Gokuh except that it's a helluva lot easier to find an Asian that looks more like him and already knows some martial arts. Nit picky as this is going to sound, Toriyama actually draws in a way that distinguishes whatever "races" exist in the Dragonworld. You can usually tell whether the characters drawn are meant to be westerners, Africans, Asians etc… And Gokuh definitely falls under the Asian category. But yeah, I think it's still reasonable for any director to make the decision otherwise, I'd just be concerned that Gokuh still look like a bumpkin. Judging from his overall look in the movie, that image isn't really being portrayed.
Guys seriously, I can understand about the racial bitching, but seriously, How many young asian actors are there in Hollywood that are capable of carrying a movie like this?
Not many, in fact, none. You guys can argue about having minor actors, or finding people who can be right for the part. That's the thing, people in Hollywood don't go out and search for a lead actor. You need to be in the movie scene and have some-what-decent-name. I prefer having Chatwin, over La Beouf.
Guys seriously, I can understand about the racial bitching, but seriously, How many young asian actors are there in Hollywood that are capable of carrying a movie like this?
There's probably a fuckton, but we'll never know will we?
Toriyama designed him as a human originally, then ret-con'd that into him being an alien.
That wasn't a retcon since Goku's true origin was never established in the first part of DragonBall, all we knew about Goku was that he was adopted by Gohan and raised in seclusion for part of his young life.
Guys seriously, I can understand about the racial bitching, but seriously, How many young asian actors are there in Hollywood that are capable of carrying a movie like this?
Not many, in fact, none.
How many Justin Chatwins are there in Hollywood that are capable of carrying a movie like this?
Not many, in fact, none.
Yeah, this is Chatwin's first big film.
On the subject of the Avatar movie: I see the point, but I don't it's valid unless everybody in the movie is Asian except for Aang. Which would be immensely stupid, since he's just an Air Nomad. I'd say either make them all Asian, or make them all white. But don't mix the races, that would look silly. The same thing goes for Dragon Ball. The Dragon World was modeled off of ancient China, Toriyama himself said so. However, I've never imagined Goku as looking Oriental, probably because I'm not. But the same concept applies. Either have everybody be Asian, or nobody, because otherwise it looks like you're doing half of a job. I don't think that there's a NEED for Goku to be Asian, or a NEED for him to be white. Just a need for consistency.
@Yuugi's:
Yeah, this is Chatwin's first big film.
He actually had the lead role in "The Invisible".
But that's the thing. Chatwin's been in movies. That's the thing in Hollywood, you slowly work your way up in the industry. Chatwin goes 'crazy' with Cruise in World of the Worlds and then he flys into the DB movie.
How many uprising asian actors are there? None. Unless you count the guy who plays Hiro on Heroes. If we got Masi Oka to play Goku, this movie would be even a bigger joke.
You guys are bitching about how Chatwin isn't good enough because he's not asian? Well, who is? I'd like names and not retarded posts like "Everyone else, durrrr."
Some will probably say Park should play Goku instead of Yamcha.
No, Park should be Vegeta.
@Strings: Show me the post where anyone said Chatwin isn't good because he's not Asian.
This annoying movie will destroy Dragonball’s legend!
I think the later half of Z+DBGT already did that.
And if this thread is any indication, despite all the fan-bitching most of you complaining will still be curious enough to go see it opening weekend.
Which is sad.

And yet a majority of the cast doesn't in DB look the slightest bit asian which is a common trend among Japanese Anime & Manga.
For those non-Asians that don't get it, I'll explain the base reasons Asians are upset about White actors being cast.
Yeah, except I know plenty of whites who're pissed about that. It's not just asians saying it isn't fair because it's their own kind, it's people fed up with the Hollywood's blatantly racist bullshit. I mean, half of the cast has tan skin for chrissake. Even if they're trying to claim they're ethnicity is ambigious, it's clear that these characters are NOT caucasian.
I'd say either make them all Asian, or make them all white.
I disagree, I mean Sokka+Katara, and ang, and Tof all seem like completely different asian ethnicities. I always though Aang was meant to be CHinese because I thing that name is more commonly chinese while Katara and Sokka's race and tribe seemed inspired by Alaskans.
And yet a majority of the cast doesn't in DB look the slightest bit asian which is a common trend among Japanese Anime & Manga.
You know non-asians with thick, spikey hair like that. Anime/manga characters don't look like 100% humans but the majority DO look like stylized asians. Despite how LARGE the eyes are, they still maintain the folds and shapes common with asian eyes, the height, hair texture, skin tones, button nose, facial structures, etc.
@GvR: They reason they don't look asian to you is probably because you're not asian yourself. Asian people don't draw themselves with "distinct asian features" because to them they aren't distinct. Just because Chi Chi and Goku don't sport the famously perpetuated slanted eyes, hight challenge and yellow fever, it doesn't mean that they weren't meant to be asian. Not every Japanese, Chinese or Koream character has to fit the stereotypes that western media has forcefed to their audience in order to be asian.

^case in point, Americans are so against anime characters having blue hair and big eyes, yet when a fucking human is BLUE or purple, or has a football shaped head it's perfectly normal. :/
That always baffled me. Before you guys say anything, I LOVE DOUG AND HEY ARNOLD.
^10, 000 points of thank you.
PPl get on my nerves when they look @ anime and shout "THEY DONT LOOK ASIAN ENUFF!"
I'm always like "Since when are cartoons PHOTOREALISTIC??"
You really just want them to match the preset asian stereotypes you have in your head.

I didn't base that opinion on the fact that some of the characters don't fit any of the ugly stereotypes for being Asian and didn't say that they weren't meant to be. It's just that like I said none of them outside of a few come off as asian to me*, so with that in mind some shouldn't have an axe to grind with someone like Chatwin for kind of being the old man out.
The comment on Doug and Arnold. GENIUS! I never even noticed that, and your point is 100% true.
About Chatwin's career:
Chatwin has had two big movies:
SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE
! War of the Worlds - Annoying, bitchy teenager who hates his father for no apparent reason. Has no concept of logic, and nearly gets himself killed over something he thought was cool. Unfortunately, he lives at the end of the movie, despite majority of the human race being slaughtered.
! Invisible - "WAAH! My mommy makes a lot of money, but doesn't like the future I want to live. So I have dreams of killing myself and constantly push people over the edge to see how they react because I have a fucking death wish." Pushes a girl too far, she nearly kills him. He becomes a 'semi-ghost'. Sees that she has a life that is 1000000000 times WORSE than his. He finds that she can hear him, despite the fact that no one else can hear or see him. He gets her to save him. She dies in the process. Rich boy gets to live with the knowledge that others have harder lives than him. Movie really pissed me off. The girl was freaking cute. And this lesson (life is hard, but others might have it harder…don't bitch) shouldn't be taught through this movie, it should be taught through beatings! Okay, not really...but this movie made me hate the actor.
He was in War Of The Worlds?
I got to check that again.
