RE: 1/5 "Is Escape Possible?!? Eneru's IQ Test is Set in Motion!" Dub Discussion
Yup. Contrary to popular misconception, he actually IS a good voice actor. :D
Chris Sabat always starts off poor when he first starts voicing a character, but goes beyond everyone else once 10 or 15 episodes air.
This was the same when he was voicing Vegeta, and that's why they had him redub the Frieza Saga.

Would you be interested in Zorro: La Espada y La Rosa?
The only reason I thought of this is because we all know that Zoro from One Piece is heavily based on Zorro.
I'm not promising anything, but I was wondering if this community would be interested on a fan-sub of this telenovela.
I am able to do the translation, but I lack experience in scripting, timing, and have a lack of quality raws(crappy wmv format). If I am able to get a higher quality raw, I may attempt to sub the first episode.
As for my translation skills… Assuming that my English is 100%, my Spanish should be at about ~75% since I was raised in the U.S. (I took Spanish classes in college to learn much of the grammar, but I speak fluently at home)
With that said, I believe that subbing 10 or so episodes should bring my level up to 90% or more.
edit: Here is a Wikipedia article for those who want an idea of what it's about

RE: 12/22 "The Forbidden Sacred Ground! The Island Where He Lives…." Dub Discussion
@Vegard:
The only complaint I have about the episode is that they changed the "They're…. propably perverts."-line. I mean, you can't even call someone a pervert on a children's show? Then why the heck did they do it in Ice Age 2? (Yes, I have to refer to an american-made children's movie to prove my point.) I already knew that the god-references would be gone, and I was glad to hear that they didn't say "En-Ay-roo" like 4Kids did. I sure hope FUNi gives a release-date for the first DVD soon. (And please FUNi, call it volume 12 and not volume 1!)
To add salt on the wound, Naruto calls Jiraiya "Pervy" (I'm sure he has said pervert in complete too) in the dub on CN with no problem.

RE: 12/22 "The Forbidden Sacred Ground! The Island Where He Lives…." Dub Discussion
Will all previous episodes be re-dubbed before they go out on DVD? I mean they all finally got into their voices and performing exponentially better (Especially Zoro, he was way too deep before).
edit: thanks Chibi, I was kind of annoyed that I missed today's episode. I try to contribute my 1 rating every chance I get.

RE: 12/22 "The Forbidden Sacred Ground! The Island Where He Lives…." Dub Discussion
I only ever called him Eneru cause everyone else seemed to do that… along with the scans and fansites calling him that. Wasn't till K-F called him Enel that I started calling him that.
Either way doesn't matter though.
I don't care if people called him Eneru before the episode, but what's annoying is when people gloat about it. It gives me the impression that they are lying(kind of like Ussop does).
-
RE: 12/22 "The Forbidden Sacred Ground! The Island Where He Lives…." Dub Discussion
eh? Who's bragging about that? I haven't seen anything of the sort in this thread.
Huh, I've been pronouncing Eneru correctly. Ibedarn.
Here's the 1st bragger.
-
RE: 12/22 "The Forbidden Sacred Ground! The Island Where He Lives…." Dub Discussion
People need to stop bragging about being able to get Eneru's name right before the show aired. These people bragging are imitating Ussop more than anything.
I watched it first by K-F as Enel and have been calling him by Enel up to this point. Now that I got the official romanization, I'll use what is official.

RE: Why do you think funi One Piece shows 1 Episode on Toonami?
@Lobster:
The only good Naruto filler (during the 1-2 year filler season), is when Sasuke, Kabuto, and Lord Orochimaru go out to the grocery store to get some snacks.
Bonding time FTW!!~ :O
What episode # is that? (I stopped watching Naruto shortly after the fillers started)

RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
@Gerchak:
I like Option 1 because from everything I've heard on the word kaigun, it makes sense. I say to hell with the confusion factor. Oda knowingly writes "Marine" on the sails, hats, the back of shirts, etc. His concept of Marines and the Navy falls back on the way the Navy and the Marines used to interact, but more importantly THIS IS JUST HOW HE SEES IT.
In other words,
Oda's concept of Navy/Marines != the United States Navy & Marines
It's also wierd for me because the translation of Navy is Marina in Spanish which means that what is written on the uniform doesn't contradict what is being said.
-
RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
Funimation has three options:
1. Call them Navy and do not edit anything that says MARINE
2. Call them Navy and edit anything that says MARINE because of the confusion
3. Call them Marines and not edit anythingOption 1 is the the most faithful translation to the original, but it will confuse English speakers since Navy != Marines. I imagine that the language barrier prevents other languages from being confused by the contradiction that is on the uniform.
Option 2 is very accurate and will remove the confusion, but the edits will enrage a lot of fansub fans.
Option 3 is an inaccurate translation, but will satisfy the fansub crowd.
I like option 2 the most because what is being said is more relevant to the story and removes the contradiction on the uniform. With that said, I don't care which options they decide on since I won't be the one that will be confused.

I was starting to wonder if A1ucard was expecting some sort of document signed in Oda's blood that the english cast was choosen by him.
Any source where an official is stating that Oda approved it is fine. What is not fine is a fan stating it on a forum or Youtube video.
-
RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
… It's... it's Mike McFarland... One of the main people involved with the FUNimation dub.
I checked it out, yeah it's Oda approved.
-
RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
Look in the old FUNi threads and you'll find it eventually.
eventually
eventually Actually there's a youtube video floating around that has FUNi saying the cast is Oda approved, if that's good enough.If you write an English paper for college, are youtube videos and forums good enough? I'll take the youtube link only if it's from a Funimation official and not some fan stating it.

We're forgetting that Oda also requested that Luffy be played by a girl. We're ALSO forgetting Oda approved of the voice cast and if it's good for Oda, it's good for me ^_^
Where is your source? Any links?

RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
I think Luffy's voice fits perfectly, which is the most important thing. He doesn't sound 17, no, but neither does his Japanese voice.
Luffy is not suppose to sound like a child under 12 either, so it's wrong anyways.
-
RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
I will still stand by that Sean Schemmel did a great job doing Goku's English voice. I don't see how he did a bad job at all.
Colleen's Luffy has the acting down, but she still sounds too young compared to her Japanese counterpart.
Compare Coby and Luffy in Japanese as a reference, or even the current fillers with Jiro. You can absoultely tell that Luffy sounds much older than those two even if Luffy sounds younger than he should at 17.
I asked my 10 year old brother how old he thinks Luffy is, and he clearly said Luffy sounds like he's 10. I'm sure that I could have gotten 14 or 15 with the Japanese voice.
Let me see if I can give you an example over what I mean.
Compare Luffy from Mexico from Luffy from Spain
vs
6:20 for the same sceneYes, both are wrong when comparing it to the Japanese voice, but I rather Luffy sound too old rather than too young.
-
RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
FAIL!
Goku has always given off that "child trapped in an adult's body" persona because of how he grew up. Because of growing up mostly in the wilderness and outside of civilization, Goku has more of a habit of acting the way he did as a kid.
Whereas FUNi's Goku is just a plain idiot for an adult.
Also, just because a guy is of a certain age doesn't mean he HAS to have an older sounding or manly voice. I'm friggen 22 and I still sorta sound like my voice hasn't cracked. :|
Luffy's voice is fine. Colleen's Luffy has the same kind of tone as Mayumi Tanaka's.
So you would have preferred that Goku would have sounded like Luffy or Naruto in the English dub? It's a matter of opinion then. Admiting that you sound like a 12 year old is pretty bold.
-
RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
Are we watching the same anime? Luffy sounds pretty young to me in the Japanese version.
Young and little kid are two different things. Compare Coby's and Luffy's Japanese voice as a reference. If that doesn't work, compare Luffy and Jiro in the current fillers.

RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
I second the comment about Luffy's VA. It seems to go in and out. I love most of the SH's VA's especially Zoro and Sanji's. Choppers grates my ears but I guess how can it be improved? Usopp's is ok but not sure. What I find humorous is that all the non strawhats are perfect. All the villians and other voices I find perfect. Yet Luffy, Choppers, and Usopps voices just make me cringe. I love what Funi is doing with the dub it rocks so much compared to 4kids but I just can't get into some of it.
My problem with the SH crew is really Luffy.
Why did they have to make him sound like a 12 year old when he's 17? I understand that Luffy is played by a famale voice actor in Japan, but she at least doesn't make him sound like a child.
Funimation should have went the DBZ route and given Luffy a male voice just like they did for Goku. I don't think I would have liked DBZ if Goku sounded like he was 12.
As for the others.
Zoro: He was way too deep and unnatural in the begining, but he has soften his voice to an acceptible level as of this episode.
Sanji: He wasn't Suave enough, but he has corrected it since the begining.
Ussop: He slipped into the Krillin voice in the begining, but it's fine now.
Robin: I have no problem with her voice.
Chopper: He sounds just like he's suppose to.

RE: 12/15 "Skypiea! The Clouds of Angel Beach" Dub Discussion
What I don't get is how come I've never heard of anyone complain about bad Japanese voice acting? Is it that the language barrier makes it difficult for us to distingish what is good and bad acting, OR is it that the Japanese have a much higher standard when it comes to voice acting?

RE: Movie 8 script released
Distributing stuff on the internet, subbed or not, liscenced or not, is all still illegal.
It's just if it isn't liscensed, you're much less likely to have anyone pursue you over it.
But it's still breaking the law.
That said, I come for fansubs fully aware of the fact that I'm breaking the law.
Some one that makes sense.

RE: Movie 8 script released
@EvilGamerX:
I never said I never did anything wrong smeg for brains. I was just saying that if they get a C&D, it was asked for. Do I really need to dumb things down that much?
Whether VP fansubs Movie 8 or not, they will most likely get the C&D letter anyways.
-
RE: Movie 8 script released
OK, so people here are complaining about pirating a show about pirates?
Besides, fan-subbing One Piece became illegal the day that 4kids got the license to begin with. The difference is that 4kids never proceeded. Whether Funimation will go after the fan subs is yet has yet to be known, but it's likely that they will, so it's a good time to backup all the quality subs.
I understand that the VP members are located outside of the U.S., so VP may not be shut down even with a C&D letter. Therefore, it is possible that Funimation will go after the leeches downloading the torrents located in the U.S. instead.
EGX: You really need to lay off of the moral crap. If you've been downloading One Piece since 4kids owned the license, you've already broken the law, so don't bother trying to tell others not to do the same just because you "think" you have some moral grounds to be holier than thou. You're already guilty legally.
-
RE: One Piece at NYAnimeFest
@Yuugi's:
That is about as likely as FUNimation giving up the license to DB/Z/GT. Not to menton the fansub groups use terms not approved by TOEI and have a tendancy to not bother to translate lines.
Think 'bout Clyde and co. 'cause they'd just about be out of a job if the 'translations' the fan subbers make are used on official DVDs (which will never happen). I don't see FUNimation taking free, un-official, subs over the subs of a professional they've known for over half a decade.
Another thing that bothers me about fan subs are those pointless alternate fonts, but that's a topic for another thread.
As for availability, FUNimation and TOEI have many legal actions to take before putting a show on the net to be downloaded (and even then I could see them charging some money for the episodes).
Oh, and God forbid that fans wait for the episodes to be legally obtainable. If One Piece was worth it you'd think the fans could be patient. We waited how many years for the license to be obtained by a respectful company? I think we can wait two-three years for an episode to air. I'm sure the screen caps or episode reviews/summaries that fans in Japan are bound to post (ala the infamous Curtis Hoffman) will tide y'all over.
I think you are misunderstanding me. What I'm saying is that Funimation can distribute the fansubs online for a profit($3 per episode?). Their uncut DVDs would contain their own professional higher quality subs.
I'm just proposing this idea so that the fans don't have to wait 3 years to view this week's episodes legally. It's a win-win situation if Funimation does something like this.

RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
I suppose because it's so well established over there. As far as I'm aware and after being in Japan, almost everyone knows at least a little English.
Here, it's hardly whole countries which know Japanese or even have any interest in it. Why force words from a language upon people when they have no real need to use them? I agree that it's good for us to learn about other countries and cultures and to even use foreign words but I'm sure if you researched most of those words we use, there's a historical reason for us adopting them as a part of our own (no doubt I'll be proven wrong here, but it just seems like common sense) or there's a reason at least. There's a difference between learning a language and expecting it to becoming an add-on to another.My reasoning is that Anime is a Japanese product; therefore, Japanese terms and culture would naturally carry over. That would be a logical reasoning.
I guess I'm done with this dead horse. I'll leave the rest to the KF and VP to do the arguing since they are the ones that want to keep nakama in their subs.
Note: I'll post the Sonic X clip when I find it if anyone is interested.
Edit 2: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v1349509FdSFcsEF?searchId=6816612366302156860&rank=0
13:40 -14:10 is the most apparent part, but you'll find more throughout the episode.
-
RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
As for the cultural argument, I completely agree with it… in other situations. I don't think it really applies to One Piece or anime.
I still don't understand why not. English terms are used in One Piece and Anime all the time. I still don't understand what makes them so special that it's acceptable for them and not for us.
I saw Sonic X in Japanese with English subs, and I thought it was pretty ridiculas how much English was used in a scene when he was saying goodbye to the main human protagonist.
-
RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
I'd say discussing this further would be about as frivolous as requesting Dora the Explorer to be fully translated into English.
But the horse is still whole. I must beat it just a few more times before I'm satisfied.
-
RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
@Ao:
Japan is not America. That's why. Japan is a culture that constantly exports language carry overs from other cultures, especially english. Most Japanese people have atleast a very basic understanding of english and can recognize the alphabet. Hell, they air american music videos on mtv in Japan! When's the last time you saw a Japanese music video air IN FULL JAPANESE on american mtv?
It's a completely different culture where they don't mind the confusion created by foreign words being thrown into dialogue or for an aesthetic feel. In america, the same isn't true. The average america has no desire to be exposed to or learn foreign languages. "Put it all in english so I can understand it!" Is just fine with them. That we're getting anything left in a language besides english is great!
You just gave a good reason why the French and Spanish attacks from Robin and Sanji should be translated to English instead of keeping them untranslated. Why did Funimation leave those words untranslated in the last episode if Americans are so ethnocentric?
I'm pretty sure Ojos Fluer could have been translated into Eye Creep.
-
RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
@Mog:
A1ucard: What I mean by ''sensible'' is an argument that actually gives a solid reason for leaving this particular word untranslated instead of stating that doing so may not be bad thing because culture imports stuff all the time.
Which is still a ridiculous allegory, if you ask me.
It's not ridiculous in my opinion, but if you must have another reason, I would say that the fact that the word doesn't have a literal translation and have to be substituted depending on the context is a good reason.
Looks like I have a tough crowd tonight.
edit: damn, sorry for the double post.
-
RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
@Ao:
You're not understanding my point. Calling a food "little donkey" in english would be confusing. Using a foreign term like "nakama' would be equally confusing. Burrito should be untranslated BECAUSE it helps avoid confusion. Nakama SHOULD be translated for the same reason. Not to mention a term like "allies" or "fellows" is a perfectly valid translation of the word, it just doesn't sound coversational.
To tell you the truth, what I'm not understanding is why do you think Americans are going to be confused over Japanese terms being used in Anime when the Japanese have no problems using any American terms.
I definately never get confused when an English word is used in Spanish and Vise-versa.
-
RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
@Ao:
Ally works as well as comrade. Not to mention it's one of those words that works better in english if you change it depending on the sentence dude. Unlike Burrito, Nakama has a valid and sensible sounding english counterpart! It has tons of them!
Actually, Burrito litterally means Little Donkey. Nakama doesn't have a litteral translation and depending on the context, a different word is used. BTW "Valid and sensible sounding" is very subjective.
-
RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
@Mog:
A1ucard, change that to ''very popular in Japan'' and your entire argument falls apart.
But that's basically how it is. One Piece is not creating any major cultural impact anywhere, at least not to any degree it matters.
And let's face it, we're just a bunch of nerds on the internet who like comics. This has nothing to do with ''culture''. It just seems to me like you're using that kind of fancy argumentation because you can't actually think of any sensible reason to leave the word untranslated.
Just because it's only popular in Japan (atm) doesn't mean that One Piece won't effect other Animes that is popular outside of Japan. This is why my argument doesn't fall short
In my opinion, Japanese Anime, Manga, and Video Games are the mediums used for Japanese culture to be shared internationally. It only makes sense that their words will creep into our vocabulary just like ours have already creeped into theirs.
If you think that this argument is not sensible, there is nothing more to argue. Perhaps this argument makes more sense to someone that is bilingual than a person that speaks only one language(not saying this is the case with you).
In the end, the One Piece fansub community have already made up their mind and the word nakama and some other Japanese terms are being left untranslated. Whether this will carry one to other fansubs has yet to be seen.
-
RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
@Mog:
''Nakama'' is really used only by a specific type of fan, without any clearly discernible reason.
Also, it's a very popular children's comic from Japan.
Why are you comparing it to cultural engravings and burritos.
Does it matter if it's from a children's comic from Japan? You're watching this children comic, and I doubt that you are a child. Literature and Art is one of the many methods of how cultural engravings begin. Manga and Anime is a Japanese art form that is being exported globally. Even if the show is intended for children, it's positive for children to learn other cultures and languages.
Globalization can occur for many reasons, and it doesn't always have to make sense. (For example, I see Spanish speakers say Parquiar (pronounced parkiar which means to park) when estacionar is the real word to use.
Point being is that since we are watching a Japanese product, it doesn't hurt that some of their culture gets engraved into ours especially since I hear a good amount of English spoken by the Japanese voice actors (which means our culture is being engraved into theirs). Therefore, it would be logical for fansubs and profession companies to give us a little bit of Japanese as well.
Specifically, One Piece fansubbers believe that nakama is one of those words that can't truly be translated; thus they are enculterating this word to English speakers by leaving the word untranslated.
It's true that other Anime fansubs translates the word to family, friends, comrade, etc depending on the circumstances, but perhaps One Piece will be the pioneer and other Anime fansubs will eventually keep it as nakama as well.
-
Any DVD players that can play X264?
I don't know which section this should go under, but I would like to know if there are any good DVD players that can play the high quality mp4 files that the fansubbers are distributing.
My DVD player that is DivX compliant works flawlessly with every XviD file that I've tried. I know that I can simply re-encode the files to XviD, but if I can get a player that plays mp4, I think that would be preferable.

RE: Untitled
What happened? In the old days, Zoro was the man.
It's easy to like Sanji, especially right now. Zoro never says much, and has been a bum this whole arc. Hell, he doesn't even train anymore. But I'll stick by him, since I'm sure he's going to do something really awesome soon.
The only reason I can think of is that Zoro doesn't show much intrest in women other than Tashigi. Where as Sanji is horney for pretty much anything with boobs.
Alternatively, Zoro is the only Straw Hat besides Luffy that doesn't have a real profession other than just being a really good fighter. I believe Oda could fix this by having Zoro more informed about people and information as an experienced Bounty Hunter.
-
RE: Nakama >>>>>>> "comrade"
I don't really see a problem because this could just be part of globalization.
I'm Latino, and I often mix up English and Spanish words all the time(Spanglish?). There are also a lot of Spanish words in English that are kept untranslated and vise-versa. For example, Burrito literally means "Little Donkey" in English, but the word kept untranslated as Burrito. Logically, Anyone that is upset at the word nakama, should start calling burritos "little donkeys" if they want to remain consistent.
Moreover, I see a lot of English words used in the Japanese raws in almost any Anime to date. Why is it OK for the Japanese to have American culture engraved into them and not have a little bit of theirs engraved into ours?
-
RE: One Piece at NYAnimeFest
If Funimation really wants to be faithful to their fans, they should hire one of these groups and distribute the already fansubbed and future episodes online through iTunes, D2D, or by other means. This way we only have to wait days instead of months and years to get our episodes.
You mean it's illegal to pirate a show about pirates and thieves? :(
OH, THE IRONY!
