I think the bottom line on the whole fansub issue is this:
At the point we're at, nobody should be surprised (nor should we really get all up in arms) if and when any One Piece group gets the C&D.
No offense to K-F, Vegapunk, or anyone else.

RomanGod and Takinawa summed it up the best I think. Especially Roman God
Hell, at this point I'd love to see some non-illegal online distribution for "One Piece". We've already got Toonami Jetstream, but then there's iTunes, Direct2Drive, that VOD Toei Animation Inc. is looking into . . .
There's plenty of alternatives.
If Funimation really wants to be faithful to their fans, they should hire one of these groups and distribute the already fansubbed and future episodes online through iTunes, D2D, or by other means. This way we only have to wait days instead of months and years to get our episodes.
You mean it's illegal to pirate a show about pirates and thieves? :(
OH, THE IRONY!
with groups like Vegapunk, they could just release the txt files of the subtitles and have links to where to buy the Japanese DVDs I guess….
If the episodes are just gonna be on places like Jetstream where you can get them for free (not to mention cable TV), then how is BT distribution a problem?

You know, I may be thinking out of the box here, but could it possibly be that BT isn't supported by (wait for it…) ADVERTISING?
Yep, Jetstream has advertising, commercials, before each video. Other companies are making online streaming sites too. I believe The Anime Network (who is owned by Viz? ADV? I can't remember) just launched one too and instead of a commercial before each video they have them during it just like if it was on TV.
Advertising revenue pays for a lot. Companies won't put things out for free, everyone's trying to make money. If it's accessible online and is free to the end user, then somewhere along the line the company producing it is getting paid, unless it's illegal distribution, in which case the company does not get any money for producing it. Which is the reason why online digital fansubs are a huge problem. If the companies lose money, or barely break even, then what's to keep them releasing a product? If everyone keeps stealing from the companies, then there's eventually there's going to be no new products released.
That reminds me, late at night one night a few weeks ago youtube updated their player where it'd play an ad 10% into the video you were playing, and it was for all videos. So if a video was 5 seconds long you would have gotten a second of video, like a 50 second long ad, then the last 4 seconds of the video. I moaned…but luckily they killed it a few hours later.
Hopefully that never sees the light of day.

That is about as likely as FUNimation giving up the license to DB/Z/GT. Not to menton the fansub groups use terms not approved by TOEI and have a tendancy to not bother to translate lines.
Think 'bout Clyde and co. 'cause they'd just about be out of a job if the 'translations' the fan subbers make are used on official DVDs (which will never happen). I don't see FUNimation taking free, un-official, subs over the subs of a professional they've known for over half a decade.
Another thing that bothers me about fan subs are those pointless alternate fonts, but that's a topic for another thread.
As for availability, FUNimation and TOEI have many legal actions to take before putting a show on the net to be downloaded (and even then I could see them charging some money for the episodes).
Oh, and God forbid that fans wait for the episodes to be legally obtainable. If One Piece was worth it you'd think the fans could be patient. We waited how many years for the license to be obtained by a respectful company? I think we can wait two-three years for an episode to air. I'm sure the screen caps or episode reviews/summaries that fans in Japan are bound to post (ala the infamous Curtis Hoffman) will tide y'all over.
You know, I may be thinking out of the box here, but could it possibly be that BT isn't supported by (wait for it…) ADVERTISING?
Yeah but that money goes to the web site or channel that distributes it, the only thing that matters to Funimation is ratings, and DVD sales, but honestly the incentive to buy those goes down when there's a free version already going through multiple distributors.
In fact, the same actually holds true for the DVDs. Since they'll be available for rent at places like Blockbuster, where renting it only supports the store and not the company, why not just save myself the rental fee? Or what if I buy a used game from Gamestop? I had might as well just buy a bootleg. It's just a more socially accepted way of not supporting the company.

Because a rental store still needs to buy the discs from the distributor meaning FUNimation gets money for that. I cannot say for sure, but I would assume that they get a bit of money each time the disc is rented, too. If not, at least each time the disk is used it is one step closer to needing replacing.

I think you are misunderstanding me. What I'm saying is that Funimation can distribute the fansubs online for a profit($3 per episode?). Their uncut DVDs would contain their own professional higher quality subs.
I'm just proposing this idea so that the fans don't have to wait 3 years to view this week's episodes legally. It's a win-win situation if Funimation does something like this.
But the thing is, they will not.
@EvilGamerX:
Yes, a Dr. Slump short. Which I do want to see.
What WHAT WHAT?!
DO WANT!
Dr. Slump? Wasn't that the short that proceeded movie 8 in Japan? What about it?
I don't think we're gonna get the Dr. Slump short in theaters or DVD here, guys. As far as I know Dr. Slump isn't licensed, or is but the company isn't doing shit with it.
So don't hold your breath.
I already said that it won't be on the DVD.
I was at the NYAF and I was was at the premiere, front row, and it was Awesome. What I liked best was that they kept the original attack names(example: Robins VA says "seise Fluer" instead of six flower) and all the new VA's were great. Plus Storm Rocked out Loud(literally)!
I couln't stop smiling after leaving the panel room! I can't wait until this comes out in Febuary.
p.s.-My only problem was that Zoro says "three-Sword Style" instead of "Santoryu".
Oh yeah, did they translate Zoro's attacks to English or left them in Japanese (since some people are saying they should leave them in Japanese 'cause it's the same thing as leaving Robin's attacks the same)? I know he doesn't say much, But I do recall him using Lion's Song.
Actually he said Lion's strike!:getlost:
Oh… well. I'm sure that's gonna rile some people up...
You 'aint kiddin brother!
^Did Zoro say Santoryu, or Three Sword Style Technique?
p.s.-My only problem was that Zoro says "three-Sword Style" instead of "Santoryu".
Question…answered...?
Oh? You were in the front row as well?
Personally, I didn't mind Zoro's attacks being in English. They translated all the Japanese stuff. That way we can understand all of what the Japanese understand in the original version. Make sense?
Ohh, wupps =/
I still hate 3 sword style technique. It's double the syllables. Even 4Kids used Santoryu most of the time…
For those who saw the movie, did the dub speak lines quickly like I hear they did in the Japanese version?
p.s.-My only problem was that Zoro says "three-Sword Style" instead of "Santoryu".
I don't see how that should be a problem considering it's the same damn thing.
It's just that we all grew up hearing and loving Santoryu!
Besides it was really a minor problem to me.
I really don't care about Santoryu. Zoro's attacks were in Japanese, and many believed they should have stayed that cause Zoro is "Japanese-ey". First off, why is Zoro "Japanese-ey"? Because he uses katana's? Because he was trained at a dojo? Those are the only things "Japanese-ey" about him, that and his honor.
Other than that you got a pissy green haired stomach pouch wearing loaf who doesn't know his way around and enjoys his sleep and liquor. Zoro's attacks where in Japanese, just like Luffy's "Gomu Gomu no", etc… It makes 100% sense they got translated, it has nothing to do with his character.
You're free to disagree with me, but it still makes perfect sense.
It's just that we all grew up hearing and loving Santoryu!
No we didn't. I grew up hearing "Kamehame-HA!" and "Osu! Ora Goku!"
But seriously, it's really no different from Luffy saying "Gum Gum." It's the same thing, just in a different language.
Hey It's just my opinion(and I did say it was a minor problem)!
and I like Gum-Gum!
Zoro does Japanese Swordmanship. They don't translate their attack names and techniques into English!
Zolo is a disgrace!!
Damn Straight Dude!

Lobster, shut up.
No Japanese swordsman ever does nor has ever done what Zoro does.
Okay, seriously. We need to lock this fucking thread now.
Very well.
