Season 4 set the bar high, and 5 didn't live up to it.

Full trailer for season 6:

So what did everyone think of the season premiere?
For one, I was ecstatic just for the show to be back. It feels like a old friend has come home after a long trip away. Aside from that, I thought the episode did a great job having a little fun and did a decent job satisfying the audience with a few little moments. Dexter's 20 year class reunion was hilarious and so was Dexter in that way only he can be. Every time someone else stepped in front of him you could just feel him cringe. Also, I'm sure it's been stated somehow but I totally forgot how old Dexter was suppose to be.. I guess he's 38.
I'm really hoping that they don't go the predictable route with this new killer… also, I didn't think for a second that Commander Adama was anyone but a "dark passenger" or atleast what Dexter's dad is to him. Still pretty sure about that by the end of the episode.
I loved seeing Dexter have trouble getting the jock's blood at first, but then sleeper hold him unconcious. That's our Dexter! And I was cheering my ass off when Trisha brought him in that room for a little fun. He deserves that, and it was fun to see how it played out.
So all together.. a fun episode, not too heavy, and not really sure where this is going other than I'm a little concerned about this new character. We've had Dexter vs Rouge Serial Killer enough now. But I have faith.
Also, I didnt realize it but it's really nice having Rita and the kids out of the picture so Dexter can do what he wants.
-
The fun stuff was great, but the forcefully dumping religion into every scene started to get on my nerves really quickly. If this continues I might just drop out halfway through the seasons if it doesn't pick up an interesting plot (and judging from advance reviews it won't), since season 5 already lost a lot of my attention and now the series just feel like a cable procedural with only a fantastic lead to pull it out of mediocrity.
-
They do that with subject all the time. It's usually just episodic. Dexter's kid might be going to religious school and that issue bleeds over into life and eventually next kill. I doubt it'll continue in the way you're thinking so I wouldn't worry. It's probably over - with maybe some mention in the next episode to resolve the school issue.
-
The season premiere was really good, I cringed at snakes slithering out of the vendor's body. I think Dexter and Mos Def's character will both take out Commander Adama and his protege.

The new showrunner already said the entire season will deal with religion.
-
Ah, now that you say that, I can see it tying in big time with the
! snake's guy.
-
I find it funny that our religious killers this season are played by Tom Hanks' son and the guy who played Mr. Escalante from Stand and Deliver.
Escalante: Do you want me to kill him for you?
Colin Hanks: YES!
Escalante: YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO SAY 'NO'! -
I loved Joe. Joe was awesome. I'm gonna miss Joe:(

I'm not the biggest fan of religion at all, but I think this will be well written and interesting. But I'll agree, if its played as hard as it was this episode it could become a bigger turn off for me.
Also, Dexter might walk from the show.

This season is one of the worst things I've ever had the displeasure of watching on cable.
-
No.
I'm sorry. No.
Season 5 wasn't the best, so I won't fight over that discussion. Season 2 was meh for me, and Season 3 was terribad (save for the "THAT STAIN WOULD COME OUT!" line).
But after last night's episode, this season is fucking awesome.
I know we like to compare to Season 1 and Season 4 simply because they were amazing, but that's just a bore.
-
Half the episode focused on Travis (who seemed to not remember anything from Dexter's kidnapping???) and his BLATANT imaginary friend. Dexter letting Travis go in the previous episode was ridiculous too, because you'd think he learned his lesson during season 4, but alas. Then there was Quinn's awfulness, which nobody in the world cares about anymore and never did. Dexter solves a murder case in a matter of minutes after finding convenient evidence ALL OVER THE PLACE. A bullet in a wall??? Brother Sam's death was dumb as hell. Mos Def was the redeeming factor of the season and he dies a meaningless death. And LOL at the ending. As if we needed MORE fake people. This will obviously lead to Brian being the devil to Harry's angel, because gosh this season really didn't have enough hamfisted religious overtones yet.
There are too many holes and plot contrivances in the story. It's obvious the writers don't give a shit anymore.

[hide]@Travis: I don't think he's forgotten the kidnapping. If anything, I don't think he'd go to the police or anything for that, since he's a killer after all. Make yourself too public, and you're going to get caught. At the same time, I don't think Travis was scared by Dexter's encounter. If anything, he was hoping Dexter would kill him so he could stop. If Dexter's kidnapping did anything, it added to Travis's wishes to quit. And yes, the professor is obviously dead and imaginary, however, I don't think that's supposed to be this huge reveal or anything. And in terms of Dexter letting him go, consider the fact that Dexter doesn't think that Travis is the lead dog in these murders. The professor has only killed three people, so Dexter probably doesn't think that Travis has huge connection to these murders beyond setting things up (like the locust, the snakes, or the other artsy things). At least THAT makes sense, beyond….well.....letting a man who's killed dozens of men, women, and children live.
@Quinn. I've NEVER liked Quinn. EVER. I hate the fact that he dated and fucked Debra. If anything, they're trying to shut down Quinn and completely destroy him. All he is now is development to Debra's branch of the story, which to be honest, has been one of my favorite things of this entire season. I like Debra becoming lieutenant. I like Debra meeting with this psychiatrist. She's evolving as a character, and honestly, if Quinn drops dead, it would just make her character a lot better, simply because she's no longer attached to him. If Quinn's awfulness is anything, it had better be his grave. I'm already liking the new cop from Chicago and the new lab geek so far, and I'd be glad to drop Quinn's ass for the new characters.
@The Murder Case: Dexter has done that before, but to be fair, this case was retarded. I agree. The bullet in the wall came from the gunshot Nick fired as Mos Def back when Dexter was trying to kill Mos Def. I understood that, but IT'S BEEN A FEW WEEKS NOW! Did anyone think to remove the bullet? Did we just leave it out for decoration? And why would the guy use the same gun that he used before? Yes. That didn't make any sense and I completely give you that one. They should have just let Brother Sam TELL DEXTER who the killer was while he was on his death bed and ask Dexter to forgive him. Simple as that. Would have made a whole lot more sense.
@Brother Sam: Yeah, I was pretty bummed by that. I was hoping he'd live longer. I knew he was going to die, but he was a fun character.
@Brian: I have to disagree most of all here. If Brian and Harry are supposed to be devil and angel, then Harry is a terrible, TERRIBLE angel. I don't see Brian as a devil. After what happened with Brother Sam (where he was introduced to the concept of redemption of one's past sins and forgiveness) and then Nick's dick face ways, Dexter's most likely snapped. Redemption and forgiveness is now meaningless in his eyes, and he's going to kill without a second though. That's all Brian is, really. ....That and fan service. If anything, he's become Travis. Or if anything further, he's become what Travis once was. Travis killed, regardless of sins or sainthood, because 'God requests these deaths'. Now? He's forgiven his latest victim and let her go. Dexter and Travis have gone in opposite directions in their killing, showing the light and darkness in both religion and the lack-there-of. Obviously, Travis will return to his killing ways, of course.
I will completely admit that next episode will be complete fan service for fans of Season 1 and 4. Really, bringing back Trinity's son is just stupid and a ploy for fanservice. Brian.... I honestly find Brian to be an awesome and interesting character, so if anything, he'll be a fun ride for next episode.
I'm not saying Season 6 is the best season ever, but I really don't see how it's the jumbled piece of shit you make it out to be.[/hide]
-
I liked the Dexter part of this episode. I liked how empty and meaningless Brother Sam's death was. I liked how he didn't die while Dexter was with him but died off-screen while Dexter was in the waiting area. Gives the whole thing a tinge of grisly realism. And I liked how Dexter tried so hard to take heed of Brother Sam's last words only for him to uncontrollably snap in the end. I like this sudden crash back into the darkness brought on by the death of the man that brought Dexter light. And i guess I like the return of Dexter's brother, senseless as it may be, because given the preview, he looks like he's gonna be hilarious.
-
What an absolutely mind-blowing twist!
Also it is currently 1998 and common sense doesn't exist.
-
Yeah, I caught on in the season premiere. It was pretty obvious for me and a lot of people.
Still, let's hope this isn't the only surprise they have in store.
-
I honestly can't believe this show is getting another two seasons. It's so awful now. Over the past two seasons, they've run the thing into the ground and then some.
Showtime is the king of keeping shows on television past their point of being good.
-
I'm impressed that the last episode didn't;
! think we were dumb enough to think Dexter is dead, and went and ahead and showed us how he escaped.
-
Well, it's pretty obvious that
[hide]Dexter wouldn't die like that. He's the title character, and that'd be pretty anti climatic.
Also:
-Satan Dexter painting was stupid.
-Why is the psychiatrist a self-inserting Dexbra shipper? I knew Dexbra was going to be attempted eventually, but with a written in shipper posing as a psychiatrist?
-The entire bit with Wormwood and the MPD station was fucking awesome.
-Dexter, why the fuck couldn't you just go to the ER?[/hide] -
I like how they attempt this borderline incestual relationship the season after Hall and Carpenter divorced. As if this thing isn't already awkward enough.
-

YES! Exactly what my entire family pretty much said watching this.
I'd say that "Maybe they were planning it, but didn't plan on them getting married or divorced", but then why did we have Lumen? To be fair, I did like Lumen though.
-
It always amazes me in this show how much honesty would help things.
This season really has destroyed faith in this writing team. Looks like plans to wrap the show up are starting. So at least an end is in sight.
The Gellar thing could have been a great twist… if they didn't feel the need to try to put enough hints in every episode. It went from trying to be clever to beating people over the head with an obvious bat real quick.
-
! Holy shit, it finally happened. Debra at last discovers Dexter's secret. This should shake things up.
-

! I just wish they didn't make it obvious that it was going to happen. That seemed to be the issue with the writing this season. Twists were ruined by making them obvious. At least this should end the horrible Deb loves Dexter shit.

! Yeah, this whole incest storyline is like a bad fanfiction. It seems the writers were really reaching with this one.
-
What a turrible season.
I crave for the days where we had Astor and Codie storylines.
-
So Dexter is back. Does anyone know if they changed staff again? Hard to think that whoever worked on the previous two seasons is working on this. Great season opener. A lot happens and gets out in the open. It doesn't seem like they are wasting time. I just hope they don't screw it up, and I think it would be pretty hard for them to… but given the last two seasons....
-
Season 1: Awesome
Season 2: Okay
Season 3: Boring
Season 4: Awesome
Season 5: Okay
Season 6: Boring until the final second, which was awesome.Maybe this will keep to the trend. shrug
Either way…
[hide]Debra figuring everything out in ONE episode. Seriously thought they were going to spread out this discovery throughout the season, but holy shit, NOPE! She knows now.
I thought it was pretty shitty of them to kill off Mike, and having Dexter kill someone in an airport? AN AIRPORT? With a security everywhere and cameras? He murdered a man and walked out undetected?
Impossibru.
However, the season looks like fine otherwise.[/hide]

just had the pleasure of watching the premier episode of season 7 and i got to say that this season is looking to be above aregage and will have some great moments
! dexter vs ukranian mafia?
-
Just watched the new episode and i have to say, i was surprised that Debra figured everything out already, i thought that it would stretch throughout the entire season but now i guess she will help him more or less. Mike´s death did not really matter to me since his character did not really have an impact on Season 6.
Other than that i am looking forward to Hana aka Yvonne. -
! Well, it's good that Debra already knows. No more her nightmarish visions.
Dexter killing someone at airport part was absolutely completely impossible, but for me as a person who worked at airport it's looking downright ridiculous.
Kaja is not Ukranian name. And ukranian mafia will speak in some kind of bad russian with horrible accent it seems. Is it that hard to get russian-speaking actors these days?
Otherwise, great episode, very emotional and tense. Can't wait for next week -
While it's completely impossible for that to happen, Miami isn't exactly the best place in the world (I was born there). If any airport might have issues and not have the best quality in security, that's probably the one.
Regardless, it was fucking ridiculous.
And I liked Mike. 8(

! Yep he stole a wheelchair, drove that wheelchair with obviously unconscious man through public part of the airport, somehow got into inclosed area, broke into luggage room, prepared usual stuff, had time to for a soul talk with Victor, killed him, and wantzed out of airport with a body.
! I heard many things about Florida, and in my country not giving a single fuck, especially if you're security officer, is pretty common. But holes in security and apparently full abscence of it are quite different things.
! Also - losing blood sample was pretty stupid and careless. But why sample wasn't destroyed in the fire is more stupid -
With how incompetent the police force in this series are, I wouldn't be surprised if Airport security is equally shoddy.

I'd say that Debra has been doing some pretty kick ass police work so far, but… She didn't notice any of this for how many years?
-
In the books, Deborah relies on Dexter's "passenger" to ask what he feels about the case or other tips that might come in handy (and if the series followed the books more, she would have learned about the secret in book1 when Dex's broter tried to off her). Would be neat if it evolves like this in the series aswell.
-

This was really the first time she discovered his lying about his working hours? lol
But really I don't care. I'm very forgiving of this series for a lot of contrivances. Because at the end of the day, I don't watch the show for the strong writing. I watch it for the engaging characters, the cheesy gore that the serial killers do, Michael C. Hall and his fun psychobabble monologues, the hilarious dark comedy and the sometimes dramatic, sometimes comical tensions of being a serial killer. I watch it for those visceral pleasures. It's not even really a matter of so bad it's good. I think it's a good show that gives the audience what it wants. And when something stupid happens, it's usually so silly, it's fun to riff on it. You can chalk it up to guilty pleasures.
Take this episode, a lot of stupid. The whole Airport thing, how the blood sample survived the fire, the portable fingerprint computer things but there was also a lot of sweet drama and acting, Dexter was his awesome usual self and we're finally getting into a story-line that should have been done years ago with Debra finding out the truth. Really excited for next week.
I'm really happy that she figured it out so quick. Not only does it make the character look good and competent, it changes the whole outlook for the season. I was pretty bummed at the thought that the whole season was just going to be a predictable cliche of her painfully going through clues to find out the obvious truth that we've known all along. But hey, she got up to speed pretty quick to give a great cliffhanger for this episode.
What I'm really hoping that happens in this season that Debra gets used to what Dexter is doing. And after that, she begins to come over to his way of thinking. She begins to help him. An eye turned here, some evidence suppressed there. And then things snowball and she gets truly corrupted. She begins covering him, helping in investigations, partaking in the kills!
My real desire for this season finale (if not this season then the next and last) is with it to climax with LaGuerta, who discovered the truth, is captured and put on the table. And Debra sticks a knife into the bitch's heart. And then Dexter and Debra fuck like rabbits immediately after on the table.
Now at this point, you're probably thinking, dude what the fuck is your problem? That's horrible! I know, I know, hear me out.
1. LaGuerta is a conniving bitch that deserves no better and after all the shit she's put Debra through, I personally feel that sort of ending for her is just…perfect somehow.
2. I appreciate that the corruption angle is like putting a stake and hammering it in with a sledgehammer to Debra's character. Like character assassination of the highest caliber. But it would be interesting if it were done well and built up throughout the season. There's a lot of internal conflict as a police officer and some twisted jealously that her father picked Dexter for this over her and how she always wanted to partake in Dexter and her father's secret trips that are ripe for the picking. Even if it were done badly, just Debra becoming a serial killer and killing LaGuerta like that seems so cheesy bad, it's hilarious.
3. It's such a perfect homage (or ripoff, use whatever word you choose) to Hannibal that I can't see the writers resisting to do it. And also them fucking would actually give the whole incest subplot with Debra and her psychiatrist from last season a point.
Just picture it. Debra with LaGuerta's blood on her hands, Dexter's look of horror at what she's done, Debra in shock realizing what she has done (I'm picturing some exciting finale where Debra thinks she has no choice and Dexter is racing in his car to stop her before all this), her adrenalin rushing, knowing she can never go back to how she was, knowing she has truly fallen, she embraces the violence and the murder and the corruption and the blood and does so by surrendering to her darkest desires and partaking in yet another act of debauchery with Dexter.
I know. That sounds just awful. But it's also so cheesy bad, it's hilarious and so strangely fitting with the tone of this series that I really think it's the direction the series is going and am kind of eagerly looking forward to it even if it is with a guilty conscience.
-
While I do find that theory interesting, I actually like LaGuerta. I mean, I know she's a bitch, don't get me wrong. But I like her because she's a bitch. Woman fought and stabbed her way up the ladder, and while that's completely awful, I find that interesting in her character. Namely since the only human and compassionate thing about her now is Doakes. Yeah, she betrayed many to get her position, but she's been through plenty herself, as her closest and best friend turned out to be a serial killer. So I can understand her being cold.
Now, personal stakes are on the line for her, so I think she'll be a real interesting character in this season.
Again, she's a bitch. But I've only felt like she's been this way in recent seasons. Last season, yeah, she was awful, but you know what, so was Chief Matthews. So her stabbing Matthews in the back was a necessary evil if you ask me.
I'm not on board on killing anyone in the main cast right now, except for the game designer, but I'm fully prepared for anyone to die…
Except Harrison. And I really hope Angel's cousin stays safe.
-
I don't think Debra becoming a seriel killer would be a good direction to take for the next 2 seasons. Keep in mind guys that this isn't the last season, we have 2 seasons; both seasons will be focusing on Deb and Dexter's relationship.
I do think there would be a very neat plot with Debra protecting Dexter from LaGuerta; but I don't think it will be in on the table.
-
This was a GREAT episode, best one in years. It's clear there's new people behind the show now.
The only thing we need now is ZOMBIE DOAKES
SURPRISE MOTHAFUCKA

I totally agree, it is one thing to protect your brother who you even are in love with (did not like that twist) and another to actually start killing people. I think the 2 seasons will be about Deb and Dexter and how they´ll handle this situation.
-
Well, that was interesting.
! 1. Dexter's morality swings are back! He always finds a killer he can relate to, misunderstands him, then learns valuable life-changing lesson which works for episode or two, and then we're back to status quo.
! 2. Despite completely fucked up situation, Deb view on it and attitude are kinda heartwarming.
! 3. First Soroka, now Koshka Brotherhood. I am surprised Isaak doesn't wear ushanka and doesn't have a pet bear. This storyline will be ridiculous beyond words. -
This episode had the best line in the whole goddamn series.
! Debra: I'm the worst fucking detective ever.
! Me: Hahaha, no fucking shit! -
Great news. The final episode of the season will be called
[hide]SURPRISE, MOTHER****ER[/hide]
-
I'm amazed how far we are in 2 episodes. I feel like if this was last season, the evens so far would've been like 6 episodes or more. I really like this pace, and I think they're being pretty smart with it so far. But I'm just curious of what they're going to do with it for the remaining 20 episodes of this season and next.
-
If this season ends with LaGuerta's death, I'll put this season above season 4.
