It's a remark that Usopp can bring comic stuff and a few laughs even when the situation is a tense one

It's his fault but not by incompetence or idiocy (Luffy or Chopper would probably do the same thing) he is just being a kid that he is

I've thought about it, and Aldrich and Terek do make some very good points. As much as I like Usopp, I'll admit that he's pretty much regulated to the role of a secondary character in this arc. Aldrich also called him a journeyman, which is right on the dot. He's been a jack of all trades, which is cool, but it would be good for him to assert his role as a master sniper. Early on in the Water 7 arc, I remember Usopp telling Chopper that he's a sniper. It's a matter of Usopp asserting himself and being confident, not becoming a stoic macho man. He is useful and definitely has a place in the Straw Hats. It's also time for him to cool it on the comic relief! He shouldn't stop being wacky and nerdy, by no means!
I will say this: he did choose to follow the rest of the Straw Hats into Enies Lobby. I find this very encouraging, as he could have easily ran off after Oimo and Kashii were knocked out. He told himself to be a man and help his friends. I'm glad Oda decided to keep him around. Even if he hasn't done any major or groundbreaking yet, he has stood by his friends. It's good for Usopp to endure even more bullshit while he is in Enies Lobby, as this will encourage him to grow.

I made a small story to somewhat illustrate the point:

Usopp: "Hey guys, guess what?"
Sanji: "What's up, Usopp?"
Usopp: "I… I followed your advice and I made this crayon picture of you guys fighting! And I threw a rock at the Enies Lobby building!"
Sanji: "GOOD BOY! See, I told you that you could do little things that amuse us!"
Sanji pats Usopp on the head.
Usopp: "I'm a big help, huh?"
Zoro: "Fuck, just die already!"

I don't think Usopp has really been THAT useless, of course. I'm just saying that he still hasn't done anything that will give him a decent resolution. It's great that he sniped Spandam and those Marines, that's a good start! That's something for him to be proud of, but it doesn't quite count as a big turning point. It's too bad that he didn't fight any of the strong CP9 characters, but he there's still more to come. There's still the Buster Call, but I guess I'm holding my breath on that! IMO, it would be equally awesome if he destroyed the Gate of Justice. Sure it's not a threat, but it is serves a major function for the Navy and World Government. Otherwise, even if his acts are symbolic then he should at least do one big symbolic act that has deep, long-term, disasterous effects! Destroying the Gate of Justice would be even more defiant that burning the World Government Flag! And considering how big the Gate of Justice is, that would be quite a feat for a guy like Usopp! At least in my opinion. :D
Usopp did point out that Kabuto has some more tricks. I've been sceptical of Kabuto, but I'm hoping that Oda and Usopp prove me wrong! Oda as always will surprise us. Hell, I'm still amazed that Kokoro is a mermaid!
Sorry for rambling guys, I just wanted to share some thoughts and ideas! I'll admit that this response of mine alone has burnt me out on these Usopp topics. I'm really eager for this Saga in general and this Arc in particular to wrap up. Robin is free, the World Government humiliated, and the Straw Hats can move on albeit with serious future ramifications and consequences.

Usopp reminds me of Kururin. Back when DBZ and DB was first up and running, Kururin was on an equal level with Goku. Both were kids and later adults fighting difficult crap. After the fights picked up a notch (around the Freezer saga), Kururin had already met his limits and could not contribute anything more to the group. Kururin getting thrashed by Android 18 and 19 reminded me of how Usopp is at current time. Granted, Usopp has a new toy, but it's really just for show. Kabuto is nice and great for long-range operations, but Sanji, Luffy, Zoro and Franky are waaaay more powerful than Usopp and will continue to grow in power.

I don't think Usopp will leave the strawhats, though. You always need a sniper/inventor. It's just that, like Kururin, Usopp can't contribute anything when he's fighting superhuman opponents like CP9, other than encouragement. Usopp stood up to the Mr. 4 pair because they insulted Luffy, he stood up to Spandam and CP9 because they insulted Robin and Franky, and he stood up to Kuro because Kuro insulted his father. He even stood up to Chuu because Chuu was insulting him personally. And so on and so forth.

Usopp may be a coward, but he does come through when he's needed. It's just, like Kururin, he can't improve his strength to a new level, like Luffy, Sanji, Zoro, Chopper, and Franky can.

I agree. In fact I said this in my very first post in this thread. Usopp is just as much of a power-house as Zoro, Sanji or Luffy. Just not up close.

I've been watching Eyeshield 21 lately. Sena is a coward and a weakling. He is always running from things. Hiruma noticed a special talent in Sena that even Sena didn't know he had, at first. Sena can run really fast. It's his special talent. Sena still isn't very strong, but he is playing football.

In the series, it shows the value of ALL the members of the team. The better the players become, the better the whole team does. If it were just Sena running out there, without a good quarter back, or catcher, Sena isn't going to do very well. Even if he runs fast.

Also, if Sena doesn't pull through, and does his part, then it doesn't matter if they have an awsome defense. They still need Sena, and his ability to run. (even the Huh Brothers, who were thought to have sucked, have really contributed to the team)

In episode 24, Hiruma points out that Sena gets this fear of the big stong players on the field. This fear is actually a motivator for him to Run faster. (do better) so he can overcome his foes.

Sena just reminds me a lot of Usopp, now that I've been watching. Sena is a big hero. He's weak, and a coward, but he's part of the team, and he does his part to help out. He never gives up and is there for his team mates.

As much as I fear getting caught in any type of argument over Usopp I feel like throwing my two cents in.

I don't really think the majority of Usopp's reason for quitting was that he had lost confidence in himself. If he had some sort of problem with that why would he do such a silly thing like fight Luffy? If he had no confidence he would've known he couldn't've won. I don't think any of this is arc is about getting his confidence back.

The real reason is his lack of respect in his Captain. Usopp just doesn't give Luffy's judgement credit the way the others do. When it came down to Luffy to choice to change ship Usopp didn't trust him enough to make the right choice. So he left, seeing Luffy as just some guy and not his captain. Usopp should've known that Luffy held Merry just as close as (if not higher) he did himself. He just thought Luffy made some off the cuff decision.

The only reason I think he even came back as Sogeking was because Franky told him what exactly was wrong with the ship, and now Usopp feels embarrassed to be around the rest of the crew (and I can see why after making such a fit.) and hides behind his mask.

Either during the end-arc or early next arc something will have to happen to make Usopp see Luffy as his Captain, and that's what is going to make him re-join.

As much as I hate these debates between crewmembers strenght, I can't let this one pass. After 400 chapters Usopp painfully achieves what Sanji and Zoro were doing back in volume 11 and all of sudden he's as strong as them? Sorry but this is pure nonsense.

As is the concept a gunner/marksman should stand 2 miles away from his opponents to pose any kind of serious threat. If he was anything but a joke character he should be able to at least do some damage at mid distance. Which isn't the case.

Isn't the case yet, anyway. And I just had an interesting thought. Some speculation now:

1: The SH's are trying to escape, but the marine ships are stopping them.
2: Usopp tells them to go ahead, and unleashes a bunch of nasty attacks from Kabuto on the buster call ships, destroying many of them.
3: The SH's get away, but as Usopp stayed behind he is eventually overwhelmed by Buster call and captured. The marines take him to impel down.
4: The SH's make it back to Water 7, where they unanimously agree to go after Usopp. Iceburg gives them a new ship, Franky comes along because he feels he ows Usopp a debt as well.

Well? Whaddya think? I think it would tie in to how Oda just shipped half of BW to Impel Down, too….

Anyway, there's a point to go here for style. Let's face it, if Usopp had, say, a good hundred feet distance from Luffy in that fight, it probably would have ended differently. It almost DID end differrently as it is; that was definitely a skin-of-the-teeth victory for our favorite rubber captain. Usopp doesn't have the physical power, but he does have the combat techniques to make up for it.

I still hold the only reason he lost to jyabura was that he wasn't paying enough attention.

Like if Luffy couldn't cover "a good hundred feet" distance fast enough to come close enough for his stretching attacks to connect. Also you're making it sounds like each shots from Usopp would connect, but how many did actually land on Luffy during their first fight?

Usopp's true power isn't in his physical strength, it's the fact that he takes just as much, if not more, punishment then the likes of Sanji and Zoro, yet he gets up to keep on fighting. If that isn't powerful enough to intimidate an enemy, I don't know what is. Let's recall the Mr 4 - Ms MerryChristmas fight. He took the bat to the head, and when he was still going, he scared them.

You're making up abilities he simply doesn't possess. He doesn't have the ability to shoot a bullet into someone's heart, he's not a real sniper, he uses a slingshot and little explosive pachinko balls that don't hold enough power to keep a pathetic human mop like Spandam down, even after he took two of them.

The fight against Luffy is completely irrelevent as it took place before each crew members had an upgrade, each crewmember Usopp excepted.

Finally saying Usopp is as strong as Sanji is implying he has equal offensive, destructive power. It isn't the case, in the actual story that is, maybe it is in your fanfictions but it's not the point.

He wasn't trying to KO Spandam, so it's a moot point. Plus, don't forget that Spandam took a "strong right" to the face and was still standing. One of Usopp's exploding stars is close in power to…let's say one of Sanji's nameless kicks.

As for Usopps strong attacks, what firebird star isn't strong? I mean, you're on fire. That hurts. And what if he has a bigger fire attack, I'm knid of expecting a "chou" (that means super right?) firebird star, using jet/flame dials for more power.

Now, what I meant eariler was, Usopp would be as strong as Zoro/Sanji from a distance is because most people, the marines in this case, would be helpless to fight Usopp from that distance--that is the distance he shot to save Robin. With Usopps accuracy, he'd be unstoppable because he's basically shooting fish in a barrel. Yet, when they all get close, Usopp like any sniper is dead.

Also, Alrich, as for Usopp being a real sniper, well, he'll never be a real sniper because he'll never use bullets. On the other hand, getting shot in the face with a tiny bomb should kill, maim, or cause some serious injury anyway. Like those guys Usopp shot in the mouth should have serious vocal chord damage. Actually, getting shot in the face with those bombs could cause serious eye injuries too, yet those guys are probably fine. It's just the nature of One Piece.

From what I gather, Usopp only needs bullets and blow heads up to be a sniper, I mean, that's all he's missing. But I can't see that happening in this manga. Usopp just has the accurancy right now.

As for Usopp missing ,well, I don't think snipers typically shoot fast moving targets so they? They wait for an opportunity and shoot someone in the neck. Come it think of it, shooting fast moving targets will probably be Usopp's "cutting through steel."

Did you forget tha Usopp himself has gotten an upgrade? And the fight against Luffy is in no way irrelivent. He did very well with a pathetic exuse for a weapon, a childs toy. By no means would Usopp have had won if he had Kabuto or was at a farther distance, but he definatley would have had put up a better fight.

Come to think of it, after the Luffy vs. Usopp battle, how can you say his slingshot pathetic? It can:

-Set you on fire
-Shoot an explosive in your face
-Shroud the field in smoke
-Shoot the cactus star, which explodes into hundreds of needles, at you
-Shoot an explosive star in your mouth
-Shoot a field of shurikens at you
-Shoot a giant torrent of fire that looks like a bird at you
-Shoot tabasco sauce in your mouth (sucks)
-Shoot pepper at you (I forget, did this happen?)

-Shoot an explosive in your face
-Shroud the field in smoke
-Shoot the cactus star, which explodes into hundreds of needles, at you
-Shoot an explosive star in your mouth
-Shoot a field of shurikens at you
-Shoot a giant torrent of fire that looks like a bird at you
-Shoot tabasco sauce in your mouth (sucks)
-Shoot pepper at you (I forget, did this happen?)

Usopp's slingshot wasn't a very good weapon. The ammo was very good, the slingshot itself was a childs toy
