Its just his genes.
Ace and him were always equals in strength, and once again when they arm wrestled.
Ace doesn't have a rubber body to get stronger. So Luffy would be physically that strong without the gomu gomu fruit most likely. It's the D.

These are some theories about Luffy's ten years of training (not disregarding the stretching idea):
1) **Rock-throwing exercises-**The Gomu Gomu Fuusian technique requires timing and foresight. I think it would make sense for Luffy to have someone (who is obviously strong) to chuck boulders at him at high speed while he practiced fuusian. Cannonballs won't do very much if thrown slowly, so he probably asked Ace to throw them (the boulders/rocks).
2) **Chin-ups-**I was quite surprised when I saw Luffy use Gomu-Gomu Bell when fighting Kuro. This immediately sprung up questions in my head "can all of Luffy's body parts be used for fighting? Will he continue to make-up crazy techniques like this to defeat villains? How did he learn the techniques?!?". After a little thought, and after reading the "muscle-stretching" theory, I thought the best way for Luffy to master this technique was through chin-ups. In this way, even if they opponent caught him off guard and caused his neck to unwillingly become elongated, it wouldn't hurt. He may have used similar techniques to get other body-parts loose
**3) Tying himself up-**This is what I think Luffy did to develop Gear 2nd and possibly even 3rd. Lucci recently stated that Luffy pumps his blood all around his body for increased speed. I think that if Luffy were to tie himself up, than he would force his body to get used to moving to other parts quickly. An even more efficiant method would be to stretch himself out first, then coil up. It's a flawed theory, but always possible.
Yes, I agree. I really don't much like the idea of Dragon being D. Ragon.
However, I do believe that Luffy, Ace, and the rest of the D.'s are related. Saul even stated that ( although how did he know, I have no idea ). Luffy's just probably 1/4 giant or maybe even 1/8 or something like that. I would NOT enjoy it if he was a full giant, and just hasn't reached the size yet.
Also, Luffy still can't beat Aokiji, even with Gears. No matter how much he punched, it'll go threw. I think it'll be a little predictable if Oda gives Luffy some kind of salt attack, and that'll be that for Aokiji. I would like it more if Sanji or Usopp took him on.
count usopp out of that fight, usopp doesnt have the speed to dodge the ice attacks or whatever
although if you throw franky into that fight, that would make more sense and usopp would have a chance
I just think usopp still has a ways to go until he can fight such a big enemy, you know work his way up, and lose that cowardess
In order to beat Ao Kiji, Luffy will need something better than Gears…..but there is a limitation to rubber though.....rubber has a breaking point...... so, even if Luffy keeps on getting stronger and stronger, there will come a time where he can't go anymore........ because of the rubberness.....

Your not being very clear. Do you mean that rubber can eventually wear-out…? If so, your right. However, we have no idea wether Luffy can defeat Aokiji with the Gears. There's more to them than brute force you know. That's why he created them.
Gear 2 is fast + Luffy's strength, but that doesn't mean Aokiji isn't strong….....as he can turn into ice...no matter how fast you can hit, if you can't hit or hurt your opponent, then it's useless....
Gear 3....... we all know why it's not a fighting move.....more like a finishing move for Luffy....
I mean Rubber has a limit to how much is can get stronger....it would eventually lost some elasticity..... or like you said, it would wear-out......
Well, if Luffy were to master Gear 2nd, he MIGHT be able to punch so fast the cold of Aokiji wouldn't even affect him. Kind of like how Gomu Gomu Storm was so fast and intense, the Desert Spada was useless and crumbled.

I think the fact that Luffy still had blood flowing around his arms caused Crocodile's Sables to be broken. Speed has nothing to do with hitting a logia because they can be in elemental form before Luffy even hits them. Unless the sweat steaming off of Luffy's body can be considered hot enough to melt ice while he is in Gear 2 state (wouldn't have Lucci felt the heat during the attacks???), he will have to develop a new technique / Gear to defeat Ao Kiji.
i figure Luffy is gonna use salt in conjuciton with his Gears although I kinda hope I'm wrong because the Megaman-esque weakness thing kinda bothers me but not much, I sure I won't even care when they fight.
Luffy's strength comes from his willpower, creativity and strength of spirit, I think. But you have a good point. Stretching doesn't make you stronger, but resistance does. If he stretches his arm one way, and then pull back against that resistance, he would be building muscle. Neat idea.
but not enough against the likes of Aokiji…... I am sure Luffy will develop some other "gears" later so that he can get stronger......
Rubber does have a breaking point, but will Oda take that into consideration for the manga? Also, how does living rubber compare to inanimate rubber? Maybe Luffy will continue to get stronger w/o hitting a limit?
I know we're all sitting around wondering how Luffy will beat Ao Kiji. He'll probably think of something brilliant, I'm sure.
But I present for the defeating of ice powers certain gigantic flaming phoenixes of doom that have recently been seen used by a DIFFERENT straw hat….
Since he is a rubber man and since the start of the series been constantly stretching his body, wouldn't that not accumulate to massive amount of excersise only taken to the extreme, since stretching your muscles is bascially what most working out is.
Which could help to explain why hes so freakishly strong
That would probably also explain his use of gears.

well maybe i'm wrong, but doesn't gear 2 heat luffy's body up. Maybe the cold won't affect him in gear 2?
well, salt ions present in water make the melting point of water go to like -5degrees celcius. that's just 5 degrees celcius it lowers.
aokiji can freeze an entire patch of SEA for WEEKS. that's bringing it down to way below 0, for it to slowly gain heat until it finally reaches 0degrees and starts to melt. all he has to do is stay -5 degrees celcius instead of 0 in his ice state, and that is not a hard thing for him. salt wouldn't do anything to him.
and gaining strength doesn't mean stretching muscles.. wth.. it's contracting them, not stretching them.. it's the truth as much as zoro is cowardly.
when u use ur muscles, they contract. u dun train ur back muscles when u're benching. u train ur chest. the contracting muscle. all the fibres contract together and some of them get damaged in the process. the damaged fibres will recover and protein synthesis occurs simultaenously at this point. hypertrophy is achieved. if stretching made muscles strong athletes would be sitting and touching their toes all the time instead of doing resistance training(putting loads to make it harder for the muscle to CONTRACT against)
and a side note
if u keep staying with the same weights and reps, u will never improve.
increasing reps means higher endurance(encouraging slow twitch fibres to synthesize, but judging from ur story u're probably just increasing blood vessel growth and mitochondria count/growth. just endurance increase without mass/strength increase)
increasing weights and maintaining decent reps means higher strength(6-12. u gotta read up bodybuilding.)
it this why Luffy can eat so much?
