Hey y'all! I'm thinking that around December I'm going to start watching a bunch of TV shows, and Doctor Who is one of the shows I'd be eager to watch. There's just one problem. It's been around for thirty years so it's difficult to know where to start. So I'd like to know that if you're like me and you've never watched Doctor Who before and you know barely anything about it beyond just the basics, how do you get into it? What episode. What season. It'd be much appreciated!

Well, I personally think it would be a good idea to start with the revived series (that's everything from the 9th Doctor onwards). It should be pretty easy to catch since BBC airs daily reruns (or, if you feel so inclined, you could fork over the money for the DVDs, since the re-airings tend to cut out some minor bits). So yeah, you could start with "Rose" or if you don't want to wait till syndication gets around to the 9th Doctor you could just watch whatever episode is on that day and keep watching (I watched the 11th Doctor before anything else).
As for Classic Who, well, you could also do what I did and just start with Unearthly Child and work your way up chronoligically, but I have a feeling I'm doing it the stupid way. You may want to take advice from some other guys here.
At any rate, whatever you decide, just keep in mind that Doctor Who is a relatively approachable series and there's not a whole lot of history you really need to know. Yes, the Doctor's been through a lot, but most of it doesn't really come into play and the series are pretty independent of each other.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also, in regard to Classic Who, you could join the Watcher's group we're planning on doing in which we pick one Classic Who episode to watch once per week.

Decent episode. It was going to be hard pressed to match last week's… and it didn't. But it wasn't bad. Nice twist near the end. The ending I'm not entirely sold on, because we know there's more to it yet.
I did rather like the slow, sadder versions of some of the musical cues though.
Good episode.
! Given the past series and especially last week, it was a logical ending that I rather expected, but how does he ever justify another companion?
! Well, Amy and Rory are confirmed to come back, so that farewell wasn't written like a permanent farewell for that reason.
! As for future companions? Stop picking up random girls out of London that basically had happy normal lives before he stepped in, and stick with grabbing companions that were going to die/have really shitty lives… or those that rush on and stow away intentionally like with Leela or Zoe... or those that just accidentally get caught up with him and can't return home for some reason or another, like Ian or Barbara.
! At the very least, stop grabbing people that are in the midst of happy relationships by promising them candy, as he's done with pretty much all of them since the relaunch. And instead seek out people that want to right wrongs and are willing to go on dangerous adventures. Or he might get stuck in one place for a long while again and have no real choice but to fraternize.
! It being the companion's choice, rather than his invitation, might make the difference.
! Or maybe he'll actually die in two episodes and some really crazy shit is going to go down. Maybe he's going to spend the next 200 years being lonely and sad before going off to see Amy and Rory again before they knew any of this and he dies. Maybe he'll just meet up with River a lot for a while. Maybe his next regeneration (may that be a long time away) won't feel the same way. Maybe he'll have a lot of one off adventures for a while with no consistent companion.
! He doesn't really show any such concerns about Sarah Jane or Joe Grant or Ace... just the most recent ones. (Which makes sense, they're still the same age and appearance as when the left the show, easier to cameo wihtout having to explain)
! Amy he's especially regretting because he screwed her up from childhood all the way into marriage, lost her child, and he's seen Rory die like 10 times... and he met her riiight after regenerating, so its built entirely into this incarnation and personality. -

Apart from being awesomely eighties, it reminded me how great ace was as a companion. Chesterton levels of getting stuck in.
-
I thought it was a very enjoyable episode. Karen Gillan said she'd be back for Series 7 - so i'll be lookin forward to her & Rory returning.
Overall, I have to say its been a very solid season. Great episodes. I really thought that asian woman looked like potential companion material

It was really, really obvious she was going to
! die, though. The doctor liked her way too much, and was teasing way too many times that "yes, you are way more interesting and a better companion than Amy, and you are absolutely getting out of this and then I think I might just take you along on some adventures!" ESPECIALLY after all the angsting he'd been doing about screwing up Amy's life the last few episodes.
! Had it been the first or second episode of the season, or a Moffat written episode, (IE-showrunner written) she might have had a chance. -

Agreed, but you might want to remember that Sarah Jane won't be cameo-ing anymore since her actress passed on…
-
Yes, but he's made a couple guest appearances with her in the last few years, and never once showed regret at having had her along, was excited to see her, and even invited her to come with again.
Its the more recent companions, that he sort of tempts into going with him, where he REALLY messes up their lives, that he regrets and feels bad about.

Yeah I agree with that. My point was more that he won't get another chance to see her or really regret what happened to her (though she did have a pretty good life for what it was in the end). And because she was happy & content with her life, the Doctor had no reason to regret it, right? But yes with the other, newer companions there is very much that feel. I actually wonder what the series could be like with a non-human companion. Pity it won't happen….

Dan Hall confirms more animation after Reign of Terror. I'm guessing Tenth Planet and Ice Warriors are a lock for that treatment, hopefully it'll extend past that.

Some Spoilers for the Final Episode of the season "The Wedding of River Song"
! The city of London, 22 April 2011 – soaring buildings, glittering and mighty under a perfect blue sky, and life tumbling onto pavements below. And horse-drawn Roman chariots driving through the streets. And a Victorian steam train on a monorail… hang on, like in a sci-fi city, but with Romans and steam trains? And hot air balloons? And pterodactyls? And Charles Dickens appearing on BBC One’s Breakfast! Something isn’t quite right…
! In Buckingham Senate, at 5.02pm, Holy Roman Emperor Winston Churchill calls for his Soothsayer to be fetched from the Tower. Greying, unkempt, older, tireder, but unmistakably – it’s the Doctor. “Tick tock goes the clock,” Winston tells him, “but they don’t, do they? The clocks never tick.” It’s always 5.02pm these days. All of history is happening at once. “What happened to time?” asks Winston. The answer, it seems, is a woman…
! Quote:
! DORIUM: “On the fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the Eleventh, when no living creature may speak falsely or fail to give answer, a question will be asked. A question that must never, ever be answered.”
THE DOCTOR: ‘”Silence will fall when the question is asked…’”
DORIUM: ‘”Silence must fall’ would be a better translation. The Silence are determined that the question must never be answered. The Doctor must never reach Trenzalore.”
THE DOCTOR: “I don’t understand? What’s it got to do with me?”
DORIUM: “The first question. The oldest question in the universe, hidden in plain sight. Would you like to know what it is?”
THE DOCTOR: “Yes!”
DORIUM: “…Are you sure?”Source = http://doctorwhotv.co.uk/the-wedding-of-river-song-new-info-26369.htm
I just can't wait for the finale. I must be the only person that is dying to know the secret of 'The Silence'. Its been driving me crazy ever since the big bang episode.
Also, the Doctor Who Christmas special will be set in WW2 & appears to be a based off the Chronicles of Narnia - Lion, the witch and the wardrobe. That should be good fun.
-
Got around to seeing The God Complex. Not bad, just about average I'd say. Funny, though, because just a little bit before I started watching it, I saw The Curse of Fenric, which also has a pretty heavy theme of faith in it as well.

I read upon those spoilers today on another site. Needless to say, it made my day! The plot just sounds so crazy! I hope Moffat has pulled it off quite nicely.
Also, if you look back on the trailer for series 6 part 2, there's a scene with a viking with an eye patch in front of a chess board… maybe that's Fenric??And there's been quite a few eye patches going around...

Saw The God Complex myself a while back and read a few reviews to see if I missed anything, well, there's one thing I've noticed.
[hide]
A lot of people really seem to put a lot of stress on the Doctor's speech to Amy about why trusting him is such a terrible idea and the effect it had on her faith in him. Most people seem to miss that seconds later he notes that it disrupted the feeding just long enough to kill the Minotaur; he didn't permanently destroy her faith in him and nothing implies that he did. If anything, the fact that said tactic saved her and the following events ought to have reinforced it considerably.

First Reign of Terror preview was shown at ausdalek, looking pretty good considering their limited budget:
-
Oscar The Grouch is a Timelord
His trashcan is bigger on the inside:
From Wiki -
In Oscar's trash can
While appearing to be the size of a normal trash can, Oscar's residence is actually larger inside than the exterior would suggest. Oscar has noted through the years that it boasts such amenities as a farm, swimming pool, ice, rink, bowling alley, and a piano. Other items include Slimey, Oscar's pet worm; Fluffy, Oscar's pet elephant; Oscar's shoes; and a dimension gate to Grouchland, Oscar's hometown.
-
That explains a lot. Anywho. Today's episode.
! Rather enjoyed it. Pretty hilarious all of the way through. I enjoyed the Cybermen too. Although I think their defeat was beyond terrible. It was built up then the baby cried, Craig resists which randomly makes them all go insane and the ship blows up. Yeah. Didn't buy into that at all. Just felt like they built it all up then needed to lop off five minutes to make room for hype of the next episode. Personally I wish they dropped Night Terrors, re-wrote the script to not include Amy and Rory and stuck that after this episode because that dragged on forever. But yeah. Aside from those it was a really enjoyable episode. Even if the laughs were coming from Matt
-
Very enjoyable episode. Cybermen need more love.
The ending was awesome.
The finale is only 45 minutes - which is disapointing, so theyt better fucking answer everything over the past 2 seasns like why the Silence exploded the TARDIS & destroyed the Universe, and what the scary truth about the Silence really is.
Btw - the Prequel for the finale is out:

They'll probably deal with the Silents the race… but not the Silence the religious order.
You've gotten used to them wrapping up everything in a neat little bow at season's end, but under Mofatt Who is playing a full blown mult-year arc this time around, like Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galactica. We're going to be getting little pieces and answers to some questions along the way, but we're not going to get everything in one go. I mean, we've seeing the start of a NEVERENDING TIME WAR. That the Doctor is only just recently becoming aware of.
If they were trying to answer all the questions, then the last 4 episodes would have all been arc episodes, not just the final one.
We're not going to get an nice easy 45 minute villain monologue reading off a checklist that explains everything. Not this year. We'll get closure on how and why the doctor dies, (and how he gets out of it probably) but the other stuff will probably remain in the open.
Probably won't even be wrapped up next season. 50th anniversary in 2013 would be a much better bet.
River Song alone is already an enigma that started three seasons ago who has a long, long history with the doctor we've barely even scratched yet.
-
first I thought omega
now they're teasing fenricMoffat
You're messing with my head
-
Totally the celestial toymaker.
-
We all know it's secretly the Zarbi. They're itching to come back. But yeah. This ep totally made me think of Attack of the Cybermen slightly. Cheesy and almost also included a Fat Cyber-Controller!

Moffat said the stuff with the Silence/cracks in time would be answered this season. I'm just hoping the stuff with the Silence isn't a big let down - after all that hype surrounding how 'scary' they are and stuff…
-
As Local knows, I absolutely loved that episode.
First time in weeks I've felt pulled in and captivated by the story. So much genius comedy and comedy lines. And I loved how you thought Sophie wasn't gonna be in it cus they couldn't get the actress back - and then her voice appeared and then she appeared. I love little things like that. They impress me. And things like the meta 'companion' reference, or the indirect K9 reference, or when the shoplady called Craig his 'companion' the Doctor was gone, mirroring how he usually 'abandons companions.'
Best, behind The Doctor's Wife - for me this season.
-
I enjoyed the episode.
It was nice seeing the Cybermen again.
Heh, Val at the mall though, every time she talked, that damn song from the Gunfighters rang in my head.
! River as the astronaut isn't all that surprising. It wasn't ever really a mystery because in the first episode of the series when she shot at the astronaut and misses, she makes a statement knowing that of course she would miss.
-
I was right about the Silence and Kovarian working together, cool.
-
Great episode. Definitely better than The Lodger from last season. Loved finally seeing the Cybermats in the revived series, the return of The Doctor speaking baby, Craig giving the Stetson to the Doctor, and, well, some honest-to-God Cybermen.
! The ending was pretty cool. The thing is, though, that I thought kid River rather than adult River would be in the astronaut suit.
-
Craig for new companion. It would be so awesome.
-
So so episode. Not nearly as disappointing as last weeks.
Cybermen looked great but did bugger all. Cybermats were great. Next weeks looks great.
-
I liked this episode, although I really wished the Cybermen did a lot more. They just don't seem to be done justice =( I should really get to watching Tomb of the Cybermen, I've heard a lot of great things about that.
Super excited for the next episode. The setting sounds wicked and I'm anxious to see how Moffat's going to wrap up most of it. I have a feeling he won't wrap up all of it though…
I'm currently in the middle of watching Genesis of the Daleks. It's pretty good so far!
-
I just got up to Tomb of the Cybermen, finished it actually. Was kinda nice to watch so close to the latest episode. Especially since it also had the Cybermats. Also nice to finally get to a story for the Second Doctor that is complete without any need for recreated episodes. Unfortunately the next story now is mostly recreations.
-
Maybe this'll be adressed in the finale next week, but I've been thinking on Saturday's episode. There's some wibbly wobbly time stuff going on.
! The scene where the Docotr sees Amy and Roroy, now successful and with a perfume line, was a fairly touchign one. Its been years since he dropped them off, and they're doing fine without him. Buuut… then you consider the date of the thing. Are there 2 versions of Amy and Rory running around - the one picked up during The Impossible Astronaut were at Lake Silencio. (Let's call this set the Leadworth Ponds) After that they were with the Doctor until at least A Good Man Goes to War, dropped off and picked up again during Let's Kill Hitler and dropped off at the end of The God Complex at their new house. (Let's call this set the Petrichor Ponds.)
! Some time had to have passed after The God Complex for them in order for Amy to be doing the Petrichor perfume line. So, there must be some overlap in time between the Leadworth Ponds and the Petrichor Ponds. (This also means that the house at the end of The God Complex isn't the same as the house at the beginning of The Impossible Astronaut. The Ponds in the 2nd half of the season are post-Melody birth. Amy was linked to the ganger on the Tardis in the 1st half of the season. So, if it were the same house, you'd have both sets of Ponds crashing in the place at the same time.) With the overlap in time, it makes sense that the place the Doctor gave them wouldn't be in Leadworth. Keep them away from Leadworth and you avoid some of the paradoxes. I wonder, though, if the Petrichor Ponds go to Leadworth and wave at their younger selves from a distance (it would have been amusing to see them in a distance at the edge of the cornfield in Let's Kill Hitler, they way they were waving to themselves in the Silurian story last season).
! It also makes me wonder if the younger Amy has seen the Petrichor ads with her on them. I don't know if it's exclusive to that store (or store chain) or if it's supposed to be a big thing across the country (and maybe the world) - again, something that should take some time to set up. Maybe inside the house the Doctor left them controlling options in a perfume company.
! Still, if the Petrichor Ponds are pre-Silencio from a calender standpoint, there has to be a reason they're not showing up at Lake Silencio. I mean, wouldn't she and Rory be attempting to move heaven and earth, paradoxes be damned, in an effort to save the Doctor's life?
! What else is going on there that we're missing? -
Some fan compiled all the "Tick Tock" lyrics (including from the teaser trailer for the last episode) and compiled them to a whole mess of River clips. It's… quite the tease and quite creepy.
!Geez. Even knowing the finale this season isn't going to answer everything, and will instead ask a lot MORE questions… I can't wait.
-
I dunno if this is a bit of a stretch but on the Doctor who prequel video on youtube someone came up with this:
River was brought the astronaut suit, like a wedding dress.
The Silents standing behind her in suits, like ushers.
At lake Silencio, the visor raises like a veil.
The Doctor and River standing together.
The Wedding of River SongI don't accept that…but it does seem like a good explanation....
-
Just watched the classic ep The Curse of Peladon. I rather enjoyed it, nice bit of twisting and turning with Aggedor and the ice warriors, and some actual acting and role for Jo for once. And the Doctor's interactions with Jo were more sincere that usual as well. (though I know she'll be leaving and replaced with Sarah Jane soon enough.)
It was really strange because, its the first episode of Doctor Who I remember clearly from my childhood. NOT the first episode I ever saw, I know I saw a ton before that (apparently starting with doctor 7, since I vaguely remember Ace) and the very very first memory I have of Who is a visual of Earth being blown up (no telling from what episode that was) but… the ambassador from Alpha Centari with it's large eyeball and unique voice... I very very clearly remember that. It was an episode PBS was actually playing during the day (for some reason) and I had to watch it on a small black and white tv set (for some reason.) It sticks out very clearly in my mind as a result.
And apparently there's a follow up right before the end of Pertwee's run. Neat.
Oh, and the season finale for series 7 is coming soon. Can't wait!
-
Pretty happy with my purchase today.
The Eleventh Doctor meeting the Ice Warriors. oh man this'll be good.
-
The Eleventh Doctor meeting the Ice Warriors. oh man this'll be good.
That's a hell of a coincidence considering the ep I just watched.
Neat.
-
Okish episode. For some reason I was expecting way too much.
! Nice job on the Tesla thingy guys being the way the Doctor gets out of it. Everyone was expecting it to be Flesh Doctor or something. Aside from that it was kinda eh. Wrapping up stuff, not enough focus on the monsters. (seriously. The Silence kinda just disappeared about 15 mins before the end and no more mention of them.) Nice nods to past episodes and the Brig of course.
-
Sooo…Just finished the Finale. It was pretty good - but i'm disapointed at a few things
! We still know nothing about the Silence. Why the hell did they blow up the TARDIS last year?
That pisses me off so much. I was dying to know why - but we'll have to wait.
! I suppose this means we've not seen the last of the Silence then - which is good i guess. They're still out there….. -
I liked that last episode. It was good
! and i did like the return of churchill and the blue guy. Also the question was pretty lol although i figured that's what it would be half-way through
-
Fantastic episode. Couldn't be more pleased. Really didn't expect them to be able to fit in that much to a single episode finale but man, they did it.
! I teared up bad when the Doctor got the call about the Brig ;_;
! ….and I really don't do that.
! But yes. All came together nicely and I'm really REALLY glad that this story arc isn't even nearly over yet. The question even alludes to something more like the Cartmel Masterplan and even though everyone saw it coming it's still a great question.
! Doctor Who?
! I thought this after The Doctor's Wife but I'm calling it now. Everything that the Doctor and Idris mention in TDW will probably be shown. I can definitely see a flashback with a third actor playing a younger First DoctorI still can't decide what did this kind of story better though The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon/The Wedding of River Song OR A Death in the Family
-
Loved the episode.
! Since I thought it was going to be impossible to solve the whole "not a clone, really dead and burned to ashes in front of everyone" thing and let the Doctor come out alive without it being a cop-out or anyone noticing he's not actually dead.
Considering the circumstances, I think they pulled it off well enough and I liked it a lot.
I saw the question coming from a mile away, though. -
I found it generally disappointing.
Haven't been looking at spoilers or theories at all, but this was all…pretty signposted.
-
! I wanted to see more of mark gatiss viking character he was awesome in his short time on screen also happy dorium lives even if just as a head
-
Fun episode. I liked it generally, (I loved stuff like getting Simon Callow back as Dickens - little continuity things like that impress me) but there were a lot of disappointing things. Ending was unique I guess. I just hope River Song stays clear from now on.
Also the Fields of Trenzylon seems to be the place where The 11th Doctor will die and regenerate. Like how Byzantium was mentioned in Silence in the Library.
-
I really enjoyed the finale. It kept me entertained and made the entire season worth it.
! R.I.P. Brigadier. In heaven, the chaps with the wings require five rounds rapid.
! I do like how the Doctor handled everything, and the way he averted death was actually referenced earlier in the season. Instead of other seasons where… never mind. It will be interesting to see how "being dead to the universe" will work. I imagine we'll see The Silence again. -
Pretty good episode.
! It was interesting seeing what would happen if you tried to change a fixed point in time, with everything happening at once. I'm curious as to how the tesselcta Doctor was able to copy regeneration energy, and the force that took control of the TARDIS in season five still hasn't been resovled yet. Overall I enjoyed this episode and the entire season and can't wait to see the silence again.
-
Enjoyed the episode.
! I really liked how everything came together. The question being "Doctor Who?" was great. Hidden in plain sight indeed.
It was easy to see how the Doctor would escape death. Now we know where the TARDIS was for the Doctor we saw "die".
! I also liked what Confidential did with River's story. I will miss Confidential a lot.
I agree with Moffat though, River's timeline really isn't complicated at all. -
I rather enjoyed the episode, it was pretty much exactly what I was expecting and wanting. Full of lots of little ideas and interesting little tidbits for later.
! Doctor Kovarian isn't the big main boss. Not terribly surprised there.
! Rory being the man who dies and dies is important and adressed… but still not answered.
! And the nod to the Brigadier was pretty touching. Had some real genuine impact that a basically offhand mention shouldn't have had... but it did, given the actor actually died. I liked that it was that moment that got the Doctor to decide it was time.As for the question….
! Yes, it IS a tad obvious, but given that the halfway ep of S6 was all about how The Doctor's name had been bastardsized between healer and warrior. Of COURSE his name is the question - it's not remotely lame, and it's helping pay off EVERYTHING since he committed mass genocide.
! This is boiling down to The Doctor choosing between being a warrior, or a healer.
@Darkstorm:I found it generally disappointing.
Haven't been looking at spoilers or theories at all, but this was all…pretty signposted.
Well, there's playing fair with the audience, and there's doing twists for the sake of doing twists. Sometimes, a resolution being signposted in advance with all the clues and pieces on the table before you get there means… the writer is doing everything right.
It was easy to see how the Doctor would ********
This season alone provided about 30 ways along the way, with a new solution in pretty much every episode. And the show is named after him. It was never really about the how, it was always the why.
And now, the "what's next"?

Just watched the finale.
! Loved it. Loved it. LOVED IT.
! Wasn't sure how huge an impact this would have since it's the first non-two-parter finale of New Who we've had, but Moffat proves he's a master of his craft by making a great finale with only a single episode.
! Loved the cold opening, return of the Silence, Amy owning Madam Kovarian, and the wedding between River and The Doctor. Also, Rory being acknowledged as being the one who dies again and again. It's awesome how they turned a humorous coincidence into an actual thing.
! As for The Doctor's dead body actually being the robot….....hmm, well that's quite a technicality, but I'll buy it. One thing that kinda bothers me though, why couldn't he just tell River the plan in the first place? I mean, I know he was trying to make everyone think he was dead, but you'd think he could trust at least her to keep a secret (but then she did go blabbing it to Amy and Rory, so.....) Anywho...
! Theories of mine that didn't come true.
-The Master being the....well, master of the Silence (not that this has been disproven, but this hasn't been shown to be the case......yet).
-River's entire life, past, present and future, would be altered and thus her story would end (long story, but yeah, I think even I'm glad this didn't happen).
-This would actually be a two-part episode, and we'd have to wait till season 7 to see the 2nd half.
! Well, guess we'll just wait for the Christmas episode now. -
Something I did notice about the episode which I was expecting to come into play.
The running theme of Mirrors in the episodes this year.
But I guess not.
