Endless Eight was HELL! Glad that's over. I was joking with a friend after episode 3: "Maybe the Eight means there are gonna be eight episodes." I jynxed myself. >.<
This one, about the movie. Mikuru is annoying. Just stuttering and crying all the time. I can just hope she changes for the better…
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

She never does.
She's a moeblob.

She never does.
She's a moeblob.
Uh, yes she does… Adult Mikuru made that rather obvious.
-
what's a moeblob
-
omg all these crazy words. I can't keep up @_@
-
…So wait, the fact that they're making a movie hadn't been mentioned here yet?
...Ah well. They're making a movie out of The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya, the fourth light-novel. (Which, incidentally, was my favourite book in the series, so this should be awesome) While it's gonna take a long time before we get to see it, the ending-theme PV is out:

Wow, didn't know that. Thanks.
Any idea when this movie is coming out?
-

It's coming out in theatres in Japan in April. Who knows when us poor non-Japanese will get to see it, though. If I were to take a guess, I'd say somewhere around… September. Please excuse me while I go cry.

@Vegard:
(Which, incidentally, was my favourite book in the series, so this should be awesome)
No, it'll suck.
Just like "season 2".
Keep in mind the original talent behind the first Haruhi series has been dismissed from Kyoto Animation, so that's why instead of a proper second series to actually showcase the necessary and proper development of Yuki, they're jamming the entire Book IV plot into a 90 minute mindfudge.
It's going to be a clusterfudge and only the people who read (RIP) the novels will actually understand what's going on. I mean at the very least, you know BLR is going to be the first 15-20 minutes of the movie to establish how important it is, leaving an hour to tell an entire book.
Ridiculous.

…You haven't been paying much attention, have you? Because if you had, you'd know that rushed pacing is the last thing we're gonna have to worry about. The movie's running-time is…
2 hours 42 minutes 53 seconds
…making it longer than the entire Melancholy-arc in the first season, for an adaptation of a book that is actually considerably shorter than Melancholy. Oh, and it'll possibly be the longest anime-movie ever.
Also, while Endless Eight was indeed the worst thing ever, the rest of the second season was great. So I wouldn't worry about the writing either. -
@Vegard:
2 hours 42 minutes 53 seconds
…that's disgusting.
Disregard what I said about rushing, that might actually be too much.

Damn, I hate dealing with things you can't download illegally on the internet to watch straight away and then buy when it is licensed later so you don't feel too guilty about it. (Yeah…) This makes three movies now that I'll have to wait for...
Did I hear you right though?? An ANIME movie... MORE than two hours?! Really?! Leave it to Haruhi to demand such a thing... :ninja:

I have it in my calendar as February 6. Did it get pushed?

…Oh, right. I just seemed to remember it being announced for an April-release, but checking again, it seems you're right.

Holy shit, a movie is coming out? In 8 days?
Awesome.

Holy shit, a movie is coming out? In 8 days?
8 days ~ 2 years online.
Movies are bad news for anime pirates because usually we can't get anything until the DVDs come out. Unlike digital TV, theatre reels are harder to copy. Though, Haruhi is so popular it COULD happen, but as a point of reference it hadn't happened for Gurren-Lagann.
Consider Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood came out in 2008 and there still hasn't been a rip two years later.
-
8 days ~ 2 years online.
That's exaggerating. 6 months would be the longest.
OFF-TOPIC: Have you watched Gurren Lagann Movie 2 yet, Terek?
-
@bunshindattebayo:
That's exaggerating. 6 months would be the longest.
Actually, there are plenty of movies that have taken a lot longer than that, including the first One Piece-movie, (10 months) Gurren Lagann movie 2, (9 months) Evangelion 2.0, (Came out in June, and I still can't find any signs of a DVD-release) and probably a bunch of other examples I don't know about.
2 years is definitely pushing it, though. -
@bunshindattebayo:
OFF-TOPIC: Have you watched Gurren Lagann Movie 2 yet, Terek?
It was spoiled for me a long, long time ago, right when it came out, actually. I haven't felt the need to download it though I heard here that the subs came out, and there's a lot on my plate as-is I need to get through.
My queued shows are LOTGH and Planetes, and I sill have to finish Chaos;Head route B, which I've pushed back for over a year.
-
Sorry if I'm asking for things already posted in this thread, but as I just joined the thread a couple of days ago, I was curious if we have any trailers at all for the movie?
-
I don't think so. This wouldn't be a movie that Kyoto Animation would want to spoil through trailers, I think.
-
Just this one, I believe.
-

…Well, the movie is now out in Japan and I am cursing the fact that I don't live there. In the meantime, here are the comments of some random guy on AnimeSuki:
@Rowan:Ladies and gents, they did it. The entire novel in one sitting, with the same faithfulness as the series. (Actually, I half expect them to break it into twenty minutes chunks and feed that to us for a while, but whatever.) I won't bothe detailing the movie, since all that would be is a rehashing of the book. Some of the scenes do stand out particularly well, though. The first to spring to mind is right after Haruhi's disappearance and Kyon finds Mikuru. Her reaction to his inquiries about her mole are priceless. His final run in with ol' blue hair is likewise well done, but one the other end of the humor/serious scale. There are also some very nice visual elaborations on Kyon's monologue about why he pushed the button on Yuki's escape program.
The opening was the same as the first season, btw. Fun little bit of incidental animation going on, but nothing special in the music department. There's also a hard to get a bearing on stinger after some really bland end credits (black screen w/Haruhi's actress singing solo acapella on a really slow song. YMMV, but I would've expected more from THE MOVIE type of setup this was.)
Also, it seems like they were really obsessed with turning doorknobs. Highest calibur animation in the movie, no joke.
My final walkaway is positive. It's the season of Haruhi they should've made years ago. I know I'll watch it again once it's on DVD.
-
Should have been a TV series god dang it.
Fudge you Kyoto Animation!!!
Fudge you_!!_ T_T
-
Finished the first novel today. Amazing. I really want the second hardback now. Oh yeah, I came.
-
First novel is weaksauce LOL.
Wait until you get a face full of like Book IV.
And Book V, that was a good one too.
I don't think the ones with the [bleep bleep] were quite as good though. x_x
-
where do you find these books
-
where do you find these books
They used to be hosted on a website called BakaTsuki, but that website was threatened and had to remove them.
I don't know where books can be found now, but I'm sure you could find out where they're hosted on Google somewhere…I'll ask around.

I got the first hadback at Borders lol. Only 2 are out here in the states…legally:ninja:
-
Baka-Tsuki got hit with a cease and desist, so they've removed the novels. There should be a torrent floating around though.
But yeah, buying and supporting would be the better thing to do.
-
Is it better to buy the hardbacks though or should I stick with the single paperback ones?
-
There were no hardback releases in Japan, FTR. Haruhi print is the Japanese equivalent of an Animorphs book, designed to be printed on cheap paper. If you buy the hard back, it's no different from buying that uber-expensive limited edition DVD box just because the DVD box had nice pictures and was shiny.
But yeah, buying and supporting would be the better thing to do.
I disagree. Especially considering how badly Kadokawa treats Tanigawa and how badly Bandai USA and Yen Press treat his fans, you'd be beatified if you pirated this novel.
-
I take that back, I lied… I guess?
beatified
There's a word that elicits memories of my Christianity-oriented 4th grade curriculum.
-

Er, what?
Care to explain?
-
Er, what?

Kadokawa was delaying the release of Haruhi Book 10 because Tanigawa was in dispute with Kadokawa and Kyoto Animation over proceeds from the Haruhi anime, since he hardly got any money considering how massively successful Haruhi was.
The two year hiatus between the "promo anime", Book 4's movie and Book 10 are because of this.
It's not just the issue with Tanigawa though…the firing of the first anime's staff is also Kadokawa's fault, as was the Endless Eight troll.

Wow, did not know that, did we ever hear how everything got resolved?
-
@LUFFY#1:

No.
You never hear anything "officially announced" like this in Japan, it's usually telephoned around the people involved until someone leaks it to the internet. Such drama that makes for good yellow journalism is supposedly shameful across the pond.
However, we can presume it's been settled since the Haruhi anime ball is rolling again. Suffice to say it's likely someone budged. I personally feel it was Tanigawa, because in disputes like this it's usually the publisher who wins.
-
Got to get the 2nd hardback novel on Saturday, very nice read. It is embarassing getting it out while you are in a class room with Mikuru looking so damn hot on the cover.
-
…So it seems someone took a low quality cam-rip of the Disappearance-movie and subbed it.
Personally, I doubt I'll be watching it, as the fansubbers themselves admitted that the quality is awful, but in case there's anyone with less patience than me who simply have to see the movie as soon as possible, well… now you can. -
Can't be any worse than CrunchyRoll, right?
-
Can't be any worse than CrunchyRoll, right?
If I were to make a guess… Yes, it's probably way worse than CrunchyRoll.
…Oh, and I just discovered that I must be one of the most weak-willed people on Earth. I'm already having second thoughts about waiting for the DVD before watching it, despite saying that I'd wait just two posts ago. This is quite a dilemma… Getting to see it early but in crap quality, or waiting for the DVD having my first viewing be in non-horrible quality... What to do, what do do...?
-
Give into the Suggestion. Watch it in camripped, then watch it DVD and enjoy it twice as much.
Chances are, if the visuals are not that great in the camrip, you'll pay more attention to the story adaption. It's the reverse Avatar effect (where the A-effect was where people paid attention to the visuals and tuned out the story).
Unless the quality is absolutely unwatchable, like back-row blurred as heck movie theatre quality like the GL movies, I'll bite. HorribleRaw quality for this is what I'm expecting at best, and HR rips are actually decent.
-
…So ok, I ended up watching the camrip after all.
First things first, yes, the quality was atrocious. The fansubbers claimed they'd done a lot of work to touch up on it, but that only makes me wonder, just how unwatchable was the original rip? The sound-quality was pretty decent, though.
Despite the horrible quality, though, it was quite easy to tell that KyoAni really went all out with this movie. The animation was easily comparable to that of the first season, with downright amazing attention to details and near flawless art. As for the story, don't get me wrong, the important scenes were all handled perfectly, but really, was it really necessary to make the movie nearly three hours long? As a result, some of the scenes felt a bit dragged out, and the plot didn't move quite as fast as I'd hoped, but I still thought it was an excellent movie. My biggest complaint? There were three different versions of the ending-theme on the single, and the movie ended up using the a capella version, the only one that I didn't like. Dammit, the song was so much better with the instrumentals!
-
I just finished watching the cam-rip of "The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi" and wow, I can't believe I'm saying this.
THIS MOVIE MADE ME FORGIVE THE WHOLE FUCKING ENDLESS EIGHT FAGGOTRY!
Yes, it's that frickin' good all right. Probably the best anime movie I've ever seen so far. If any one of you here who have been a long time Haruhi fan got disappointed by Endless Eight, go watch this movie, it's so good that you won't even bother the fact that you're watching it cam-ripped. AND you will definitely forgive Endless Eight, or even forget that you have watched it, or even think that Endless Eight never existed. Hell, I was thinking to myself that it would be really OK if there will be no more Haruhi anime after this movie. It really feels like the closing curtain of the franchise even though it's really not.
@Vegard:
As for the story, don't get me wrong, the important scenes were all handled perfectly, but really, was it really necessary to make the movie nearly three hours long?
Dude, it's based on the 4th light novel and there were no significant changes in the movie that made it looks really different from the novel, of course it would be that long. Like you said, KyoAni really went all out for making this movie and they decided to not make any changes from the light novel to stay true to the source material. You have to give them credits for that. And besides, this movie is a novel adaptation, think of it like the Harry Potter movies, Lord of The Rings, or any other book/novel based movies that have a long duration because they're trying to stay true to the source material as possible.
-
@bunshindattebayo:
THIS MOVIE MADE ME FORGIVE THE WHOLE FUCKING ENDLESS EIGHT FAGGOTRY!
Yeah, no.
Think about what you just said there. It's like saying the creation of Israel is enough for people to forget about the Holocaust.
Obviously I'm making exaggerations here, but seriously while the movie was good, it isn't worth forgiving that little stint. Especially when you consider this could have been a series, and could have happened like two years ago when Haruhi was a lot more relevant.
-

Well, the movie made it into Top 10 Box Office in Japan. It's already an indication that people love that movie no matter how bad E8 was.
Btw, have you watched the movie yet, Terek? Like I said, it's that good that you won't bother with the cam-rip quality and will make you forget that E8 existed.
