Love this series, manga and anime. Anyone else out there?
Hajime no Ippo

LOVE IT! great series, I have the manga series up to Vol. 40…. haven't started reading it though, but I will. I like Ippo's fights, you get glued in real fast, and you can't stop watching!
so T.As verdict.... Awesome!
-
I really love it. My only qualm is that everything that happens is really interesting while it happens, but not really very memorable to me. I never remember anything that happens in the fights after I'm done reading them, and half the characters who return after several books leave me thinking "Wait….who was he again?".
Still, it makes for a good read.
-
I'm a big fan as well, of both the anime and manga. Probably my favourite sports series along with Ashita no Joe and Slam Dunk. Turned me into a genuine boxing fan! Like Captain Panda brought up, most the opponents or minor characters aren't that memorable besides perhaps 3 or so, and only because they are recurring. But the main characters are all very good, and it's a pretty emotional series whether it's being hilarious or incredibly sad at points.
Probably the longest series I've ever read too… up to 70 volumes.
-
Takamura is my favorite manga character ever.
It's one of my five favorite series (there isn't really order). I've read volumes 1 - 51, though I've missed 38 - 40. What turned Geromichi into an old man?
The only thing I don't like much are Ippo's fights. He'll totally get his ass kicked, and then turn it around with 2 or 3 punches every fight.
-
SnooypCool used to have this project, and I wanted to get around to reading it sometime, but I think they stopped (at least the site is gone).
-
I could find a link to the first 41 volumes, if you'd like. But I dunno if there's still a torrent for the rest of the translated manga.
-
Nah, maybe later, I'm too busy with a bunch of other stuff to bother right now.
-
snoopycool is still doing it, their website has just been down for a while.
-
I like Hajime no Ippo also. I've seen all of the anime, but only read parts of the manga. I have about 40 actual volumes that I bought (Japanese only though). I eventually plan on downloading the translated versions (if there were text translations somewhere it would be better, since I already own quite a bit of the series, and I wouldn't want to wait so long to download ones I already bought).
My favorites are Mashiba, Vorg, and Kimura by the way.

**Agreed. Takamura Mamoru rocks. He's an undeniable force of nature. He's hilarious. I remember the bathroom brawl he had with my favorite character in HnI, Sendo Takeshi.
True, that about Ippo's fights. But I feel that given the predictability aspect of a series like this one - I mean, it is called Hajime no Ippo - he still manages to pull it all off without his viewers/readers going, "yeah, yeah, whatever…" The challenges are well written, and so are the characters, so you kinda can't help but cheer for Ippo. That said, my heart still belongs to Osaka. Go, Sendo Takeshi!
-
Speaking of Ippo's fights and Sendo, I used to love him before he first fought Ippo. The bell rung, and Sendo kept swinging. Of course, he was unconscious, but I was like "stop fighting, asshole!" I haven't really liked him since.
-
I started reading it. Don't know why I stopped.
EDIT: I think it's that the art didn't really appeal to me.
-
Hmmm i didnt see this topic
yes, i love hajime no ippo and since there arnet many places to discuss it on the internet, i suggest going to my forum (look at my sig), there it has everything about ippo
there should be a torrent up for volume 72 there within a few days or so i hope
anyways, hni is my favorite series and op is my 2nd
takamura is my favorite character hands down, he is just so damn funny (perfect example would be having the whole country of japan cheering for him during his fight with hawk and then after winning everyone starts throwing trash at him cuz of his comments, only takamura could turn 50,000 thousand fans of his into enemies in an instant)
now i feel its my duty to respond to certain topics here
anyways

You must have a really short attention span then

mine too
and geromichi looks like that because he lost so much weight and shaved his hair/eyebrows (he was a welter weight when he was fat and then turned into a featherweight to fight ippo, welter is like 147 pounds and feather is like 125)
and the reason he can turn fights around that fast is cuz he super strong punches, his fights would be totally boring if he had miyatas speed with his power cuz then he could end the fight in the first 10 seconds ala tyson :P

thats 100% correct ;)
except sawamura is 100X cooler than sendo :P

well they had to give him SOME character man, lol you will like sawamura more than sendo though once you see him fight ippo ;)
sawamura would ko sendo within 1 round
-
Sawamura is that much better than Sendo? Whoa. Going by Ippo's fights, they all seem even. Can't wait for vol. 52!

**i have yet to confirm that for myself. quite a few of my friends say similar things about sawamura. though you know, from what i've seen i'll have to say they did seem pretty even so far. but again, i don't think i've read enough to agree or disagree. i really need to catch up on reading the manga.
however, regardless of the turn out, i still love Sendo. i think my fangirlism has forever impressed upon me, a bias. ah well, i remain a fan of Naniwa no Rocky.
-
sawamura has sendos power+miyatas countering abilites+a jab that comes out like hayamis shotgun called the "bullet jabs"
he also is mentally crazy and unstable plus he cheats during his matches, he has 2 losses both coming by dq, the one they showed showed his opponent accidentally elbowing sawamura and then sawamura countered him and then while he was falling down to the canvas sawamura grabbed him to stop him from falling and then elbowed him in the face
they also show him fighting shimabakuro (the super buff super short guy ippo fought) and he easily dominated him like he was nothing, also before the fight mashiba and sawamura run into eachother and sawamura slaps kumi for touching his motorcycle and then mashiba gets pissed at trys to flicker jab sawamura and sawamura dodges them like they were nothing (they didnt fight cuz ippo interjected and stopped it)
also during his fight with ippo he cheats numerous times, like tripping ippo while he is going for the dempsey roll and then punching him while he is on the ground
due to his fighting style he would calmly dominate sendo with counters and then do something to piss him off and make sendo rush in with big swings and then he would get countered and knocked out, sendo is easy to piss off so he would easily fall prey to sawamuras mind games
ippo BARELY beats sawamura, i personally think its the best fight in the series (even better than date vs martinez and hawk vs takamura), everything from the buildup to the actual fight is really good
also like i said, volume 72 is out now and should have a torrent within a few days, and thats gonna have sawamura vs mashiba wich is gonna be an awesome fight, if you look at it logically there is no way mashiba can beat him but i think somehow mashiba will win…..
besides both sawamura and mashiba are crazy as hell so thats just a great matchup from that....
i cant wait for 72! B)

lol the only thing even about sawamura and sendo is power, everthing else goes to sawamura…
hey since you are a sendo fangirl you should goto my forum, there is a mashiba fangirl there so you two can do hot fangirl stuff together.....or something :P
:D

**wha?! a MASHIBA fangirl? now i've seen everything.
wow…it IS a big world…
MUST DO MORE MANGA READING!
he cheats, he cheats! wow. a guy really willing to do anything...nah, i am uncomfortable with the word "cheating". let's just say his methodology is a little less than clean cut. but i guess that's just a matter of semantics. whatever he does, he does it to win. so, kudos to him. sawamura...
ah, i was knocked out the first time i ever heard Sendo Takeshi talking about Rocky Marciano, who is also my personal favorite Heavyweight Champion. I just loved it. And his fights with Ippo will always be burned into my memory. I was on the edge of my seat, even if I knew that Ippo would eventually win - hey, they didn't call it Hajime no Ippo for nothing, right? The title itself is the biggest spoiler of all. We know who the author is building up. But the character design is superb, and I just thought that out of all the characters I did encounter in the manga and the anime, Sendo was just the one that stood out for me the most.
will check out the forum, for sure. and we'll see what we can do about the erm, "hot fangirl stuff"... :P

Hi guys, anyone knows where to get volume 71 of this awesome manga? I'm having a lot of trouble finding it.

I have a love/hate relationship with Baki, but even in "Love Mode," I still prefer Ippo by far.
-
They do bare a resemblance I suppose, but Ippo is by far better. Hajime no Ippo isn't something I think is the best of its genre (being sports), but one of the best of any genre.
Answering the question above, my favourite characters are either Takamura… or Miyata. Reading their major fights from the manga are just too great. I like just about every character though, except those bastards Sawamura and Bryan Hawk
-
HnI beats Grappler Baki by a world. Even if you weren't a boxing fan you'd have to consider HnI one of the best manga/anime ever made, if you ask me.
Ah, Hawk I could let by. I'm SO glad Takamura pulled through. But I guess we all knew he would. He just…rocks...
But Sawamura? Oh man. Now that I've caught up on my manga, I gotta say he is a bastard. And not the good, funny kind.
Oh, and if I were to answer the question again, all you'd have is a hyperventillating Sendo fan girl on your hands...
-
I loved Hawk. Don't hurt me.

I agree. I liked boxing when I first got into it, but I really hated sports manga. Ippo changed that, Baki would never have been able to.

I loved Hawk. Don't hurt me.He does have one good point, his ENGRISH was fucking hilarious. "FUHAHAHA LET'S SHAKE HAND WITH ME!" … too bad SnoopyCool fixed it in their scanlations.
I liked boxing a little before Ippo, but after Ippo I loved and understood it a lot more. I never knew how hard it was to be a boxer, most definitely the toughest sport to be involved with :(
-
I still don't have the second PS2 game (since I'd have to import it), but I have the first one that came out in the U.S. (Victorious Boxers) and the GBA import (by Treasure).
I've always liked boxing games like Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out (although I haven't played many "realistic" boxing games).
The Ippo games are really fun also…my best character in the PS2 one is Saeki (cause he moves so fast...I can even take down Takamura easily with him, but I still haven't beaten the bear lol). In the GBA game, I like Vorg and Mashiba the best. Oh and Kimura is cool in the PS2 version (the movie/ova with the fight between Kimura and Mashiba is my all time favorite of the anime).
-
could someone tell me at which chapter does the anime end please?
and what exactly are the OVAs? are they from the manga?
i'd be happy if somebody could help :)

**well, the anime ends at volume 30 and the ova's are fights that happen afterwards in the manga with the kimura vs. mashiba fight occuring shortly afterwards eventhough the ova was released after the sanada vs. ippo ova.
edit: the chapter is round 268 -

somehow i find that hard to believe :P
The only person I can beat healthy Takamura with is Takamura. With Saeki, I just throw crazy hooks until I get a TKO, which is pretty good, but nothing compared to what I can do with Kamogawa.
I beat healthy takamura with the following
Ippo
Kamogawa
Sawamurawith ippo i did constant body shots and dempsey roll's
kamogawa it was all body shots with the occasional tekken thrown in
and with sawamura it was all about the bullet jabsthere is a guy on the vb1 forum at gamefaqs who could beat takamura with KOBASHI! and he didnt use any cheap tactics like i did to beat him, he actually outboxed him and won….. that is incredibly hard cuz kobashi is as weak as saeki but he doesnt have the speed
and yeah, kamogawa is super overpowered in vb1.....
lol, i remember i was fighting kamogawa vs saeki (i was kamogawa), so the first round starts and saeki starts running around all fast n shit, so i trapped him in the corner and hit him with 3 body blows and on the 3rd one he leaned to the side and i followed it up with a tekken, only the tekken didnt hit his stomach it hit right in the face (saeki's hair fell down and he was ko'd, i got a cool ko animation too cuz he slide under the ropes and half of his body was hanging out of the ring..)
that was my fastest ko in vb1(25 seconds), a brutal knockout too
you should get all stars though buc, its a million times better than vb1, and its alot better in gameplay than vb2 also...
Yeah, I can't KO anybody with Saeki either. I only get TKO and decision wins and stuff. I don't think I've ever KO'd anyone with him…not even the weaker guys. But I just don't let anyone touch me (since he dodges, sways, and moves so fast) when I use him. I like using Mashiba, since he's my favorite character in the series, but I'm not too good with him.
I got like 2 ko's with saeki when playing as him, they both were knockouts in the 10th round though and they both were uppercuts, but yeah he was weak as hell but oh so fast in vb1
and i love using mashiba in vb2/allstars, in vb1 he just sucks horribly cuz the targeting system is off (in vb2/allstars thats fixed so his flicker jabs are sooooooo fun to use)
-
Wait, so All Stars is actually better than VB2?
-
much better
the individual character ai from vb1 returned (in vb2 the characters didnt fight like they were supposed to, an example would be mashiba hardly used the flicker jabs whereas in all stars he uses it constantly), so all the characters fight like they are supposed to (it really feels like you are fighting the actual character)
and the gameplay has been tweaked too, the specials are more effective too (in vb2 it took like 20 jolt's from miyata to knock down the opponent and in all stars alls it takes is one clean one)
in all stars its not how many punches you can land, its how many effective punches you can land
ive had so many matches that go to 10 rounds where im totally dominating and then the computer turns the match around and wins with like 15 seconds to go, its really good
and in all stars you can adjust the stats before a match too, to make it as easy or as hard as you want
before a match you can adjust
power
speed
life
difficulty (easy, medium, hard)its alot better than vb2, you should only get vb2 if you want a career mode reallly….
-
Sounds awesome. A problem I had with VB1 was that the matches were 6 rounds at the very most, unless I got rid of the three knockdown rule.
-

Hm? How so? (And if someone beat Takamura with Kobashi, what's hard to believe about me winning against him by TKO and by decision with Saeki?)
Saeki's punches don't seem to do anything to the bear…. And if Takamura hits Saeki once, he's okay...but if the bear hits Saeki once, he's down.
So what's some tips to beat the bear with Saeki? Maybe I'm just not hitting the bear correctly with him.
-
I dunno, it seems like that same strategy (uppercut to the head) works against the bear for everybody. Though, I don't think I've actually fought the bear with Saeki before.

I didn't know that. I guess I'll try that next time.
The only guys I've fought the bear with are Takamura and Saeki…and I can only win with Takamura so far.
But then again, I couldn't beat that afro guy (Kimura fights him) until after like a lot of tries. I didn't know what the problem was...I was breezing through the game (after getting used to it) but when I got to him, I was stuck for like a day. And it made me so mad, because all the FAQs on gamefaqs were like "he's so easy" and stuff.
I can beat the afro guy all the time now though...so I don't know why I had such a problem with him at first.
