Ok! Rather than digress in the one piece thread abou this i decided to bring it here. I noticed in many of the anime/manga that i read/watch, that Japanese isn't exactly the same in everything! I'm aspiring to learn japanese (I think i'm decent but not decent enough.) And i want to understand more about the dialects and oddities of this great language. So anything you know pour it on me! (Though i'd really appreciate more on kansai dialect Call it kansai for dummies if you want.) Thanks in advance!
Japanese dialects

Wow, just when you thought Japanese couldn't get any more complicated. :laugh: That was interesting, though. That brings me to the question - are different dialects used for different characters in One Piece? Do they use mostly standard Japanese?
-
There's a few different ones, yeah. Most of the crew uses just plain Japanese (though Zoro's is the most rough of them all), and I can put money that I'm absolutely positive kansai-ben has been used more than once, but I can't remember for the life of me who it would be. ocean could probably tell you…
-
I have worse memory than you, Carly. I only remember Sauro speaks in my dialect xD;
-
Actually i already read that article XD i was hoping to find out more than that from native japanese speakers, but i guess i should have made it obvious that i already went to wikipedia. (I go to it for EVERYTHING! Thumbs up) Ocean? Whats your dialect? I missed the discussion on that…and what makes it different from normal japanese?
-
ocean, you have failed me ! ;_;
If you're looking for more than wikipedia though, I really can't help you since I'm not a native Japanese speaker… if you want to know kyoukasho-ben though, I'm all for that. :laugh:

My dialect is Nagoya-ben: http://mediazone.tcp-net.ad.jp/MISO/EBITENW/NB/
It's just different language usage, I think. When it becomes extreme, foreginer will have hard time understanding it (ie my mom). shrugs

Kyoukasho-ben?! (Takes out notepad.) Lay it on me! Anything is good! Lol i've been trying to learn about all the dialects i can ^^

Hahaha. I'm studying here in Kyoto and we've already had two Kansai-ben workshops. But even in Kansai-ben there's differences between the cities. Osaka-ben is pretty different from Kyoto-ben (which is what my host family speaks)
I am really greatful for those workshops though. I've started reading Hajime no Ippo and the character Sendo has a THICK Osaka-ben. Without those workshops I'd never be able to figure out what he's saying.
You speak Nagoya-ben, Ocean? Heh heh, cool. :laugh:

I think you missed the joke.
Stares intently I see. -_-;;; i guess i should be less gung ho about this, anyway anyone who can help me out please do so Via PM or this thread in the fourm! I really would like to learn more about the different dialects in japan. And is Osaka ben really that hard to understand? O_o i mean i can pick it out in japanese speech, (After watching a lot of Detective Conan.) but i usually can understand most of it….
-
As said, Sendo's accent is pretty damn thick. And while I can more or less read it now fine without those workshops I'd be up the creek most of the time.
-
I got the impression from watching Azumanga Daioh that people in Tokyo think people from Osaka sound odd.
-
I've got a friend in Osaka… she says that sometimes she'll get a funny look once or twice but it's not totally offbeat to hear (Tokyo area and Osaka are huge business centers, people are sort of used to it). If she were from Naha then she definitely would get a 'WTF' look, I think...
-
Everytime I hear/read Nagoya-ben with all the "myaa" "nyaa" it reminds me of Cartman.
"Nononono! Me h'myah [hand at eye level], you guys myah! [hand at chest level] — maybe a little mo down, down in hyah. [hand at foot level. Then he straightens up] SCREW YOU GUYS, I'M GOING HOME."

cracking up Stephen, that is great.
I will never be able to watch/read/look at a Nagoya-ite the same way again.
