Hmmm . . . . interesting.
Although that's one weird looking dragon.
That title is really misleading. Mike and Bryan are the creators of avatar and the ones generally credited with the whole shebang.
That said, Mike and Bryan weren't really super responsible for Avatar's best qualities… the writing staff and producers were. (The drop off in writing quality on Korra showed that loss... and how solid Voltron has been with the same studio but not them is also telling.)
He's credited with some pretty good Avatar episodes, but only a handful of really forgettable Futurama episodes... hard to tell.

I saw a snippet earlier and thought it was a Phoenix.
Not gonna lie. I laughed at 0:45.
Aw man, it's the computer-style "hand-drawn" animation. Not my favorite.
It looks beautiful otherwise.
Yeah, not a fan of the hand drawn CG when any show does it. The tech just isn't quite there to make it look right, but I understand its a major cost and time saving measure.
Still, looks promising.
I'm not the greatest fan of the animation, but it does look like something I'd get used to or even appreciate after a while.
Digging the premise, I'm all in for some fantasy adventure~
Well, I suppose if we are to ever get to good looking hand drawn CG cartoons, we'll need to swallow some weird ones. And if we are talking about Avatar creators without every possible kind of ridiculous restraints being thrown at them at the eleventh minute, we can expect a very good show regardless of how it looks.
And anyways, at least it doesn't look as bad as Berserk… although I have to admit after Land of the Lustrous I was hoping we had already got to the point we could expect those types of cartoon to look good (real good) already:
!
Well if someone was going to master it it would be the Japanese first.
Although Disney I know is trying to make their CGI look like "painting".
Finished Book 1: Moon. (Yeah, they are doing that.)
My thoughts.
! The world and story are fine.
! Half-Prince is okay.
! Moon Elf Assassin is great.
! Little Brother Prince Animal Whisperer is shit.
! Sister Witch is great.
! Knight Brother is fine the way he is.
! Hawkmoth Jaffar is pretty good.
! But Best Character award hands down goes to Auntie Mute Knight.
All in all…It's fine.
Watched the first couple episodes. It's okay so far, if a bit generic. I get turned off immediately by there being "dark magic" within the first 30 seconds of the show which is just so cliche. Like you already have a system in place for 6 different elements, and you have to go with "dark" for the badguy set?
Weird getting used to Sokka's VA not being Sokka, though he's doing a different performance so it's not too jarring.
Not a big fan of the CG 2D animation. Be it on this, Ronja, Berserk, or RWBY, the tech just isn't quite there yet. It's obviously faster and cheaper than traditional animation but it just always looks so janky. Like it's missing too many inbetween frames and lacking a human hand guiding the details.
It looks better in some shots than others, so I assume some trick of motion or the animation just putting in a couple extra frames of work makes the difference, but some shots that should be simple closeups just look weird and stuttered.
And got through the first season. Not bad. Best character is definitely the aunt. It's Netflix so I assume they greenlit two seasons at once, so maybe we'll see the next batch of eps in a few months.
! don't think I've ever seen a straight up deaf character in animation before. Not counting like, flying carpet in Aladdin or animal characters, but an actual person doing constant sign language complete with interpreter next to them. Neat.
! Also, if fulminos is the key word for lightning, then Draconic spell language is just Latin, I think.
Ok… hmm... what's the thing with the framerate?
I actually had to stop the first episode after 10 minutes because of how much this was bothering me and google to see if that was a common problem or something with my internet/hardware (I am a technology illiterate). It is like half the frames from the animation are missing, there is no way my brain can gestalt whatever is left to fill in the gaps. Even something simple like a baker talking with a child was unbearable, it was like mini time-slips where happening every 0,1 sec.
I didn't disliked the content - it was generic, sure, but interesting enough - however I can't say I enjoyed it because the conscious effort to keep forcing myself to watch the whole episode despite the animation completely ruined the experience. I can't see myself watching the rest of the season due to this technical aspect, which is really a shame. It baffles me to think this was a conscious choice.
They apparently intentionally took out frames in order to make it look more organic than what the computer was naturally providing. Which… was a mistake.
There's less of that later on though, the animation either gets better or you get used to it. I stopped being jarred by it after a few episodes.
I have no idea what episode I'm on. But I'm loving it so far.
Ezran is adorable. I like the Aunt a lot. I like Viren's children. I like the humor.
! The elves remind me of a mix between WoW Nightelves and the elves in Dragon Age.
! Hiccup 2.0 wasn't too bad. Normally his character type I don't care about. But I do like that he is a nubblet mage.
! Rayla is not too bad. I like that she's not fully serious.
! I was also surprised to see a full deaf character. I liked that even though I can't understand her they didn't subtitle her and you only knew what she said if her 2nd translated. She kinda reminded me of Cassandra in Dragon Age.
! As I mentioned before I like Viren's kids. And I feel like one or both of them will turn heel. Probably the son first.
I can't stand cgi cartoons that try to look 2D normally. But the story has me interested enough to keep watching.
Oh I apparently finished the 1st season.

So far RWBY is the only one that I like and even that doesn't feel like it's trying to be 2D, just something different.

I know someone here works on RWBY. But I just can't watch it. I really don't like the way it looks or moves.

I haven't watched since S3 or RWBY, but I remember there was a lot of over-gesticulating and other odd movements.
I watched maybe the first few RWBY episodes and, aside from the weird animation, I just found it be horribly dull and tediously-paced (yes, I've heard it gets better).
Finished Season 1.
I got used to the animation as episodes went on.
! I'm going to call it that the King's soul is in a coin along with the Elf assassins. Virens kids are both idiots lol and because of that it's hard to tell if they are on their dads side fully or if they are acting on misguided beliefs.
Yeah, I decided to trust on everyone saying the frame rate thing got better as the series goes and forced myself to keep going. It was still a problem to me for 2 or 3 more episodes but then it got much better.
Sadly, managing to get over the frame rate issue made me focus on the series itself and… well... I disliked it. Strongly.
! The writing is terribly messy and contrived, the characters are inconsistent, the humor is dumb and annoyingly used (at some point I felt like the characters had the need to be funny in every single line). By the 7th episode I caught myself forcing to watch it again, and this time it had nothing to do with the animation. Also, I feel like the main characters have almost no perceivable personality traits to set them apart from each other, they are all basically just "ironic good kids"… except Callum takes it one notch too high and crosses the line between entertaining and annoying by the second episode - and just keeps going.
! When I finally finished the season the only thing I could feel was that I am 20 years too old to enjoy this and I think that's the problem really. The character behavior really screams pre-teen and I think that's the whole point, this show is not meant for me but for someone who could be my child.
Good things:
! I'm going to call it that the King's soul is in a coin along with the Elf assassins.
! C'mon, clearly his soul was exchanged with the bird's.

Somehow I didn't actually think about that
Oooo. I'd like that. I hadn't considered that either.

taboo will be so sad.

It does. Season 3 is the top so far. I advise you to try more of it.
New episodes are coming February 15.
Not sure why they played so coy with will there/won't there be a season 2… they obviously had at least this much on order when the show premiered, and its Neflix so it was kind of safe to assume there would be more than 9 episodes.
Season 2 was an improvement on the first in terms of story and character… and they stopped doing whatever they were doing with the animation that made it so jerky. So, improvements all around!
(Seriously, who thought removing frames would make it look better? Its CG, its not going to look hand drawn no matter what.)
As always, it is way more interesting when the story stops focusing Callum and co. to either Viren and Snow White's Mirror or Soren and Claudia.
And the sole two scenarios involving best aunt.
The show splitting its attention four ways is getting in the way a little. Because its Netflix they can design a story to go over three or four episodes and be okay-ish… but it means they're not even trying to make tight contained 22 minute segments. Like that flashback was stretched over two episodes even though in full it was maybe 14 minutes long.
As a result, even after 9 episodes, it feels like very little happened. Like if they'd focused that same ammount of material could have been told in 4 or 5 episodes. Room to breathe is good, but... if you're going to take advantage of Netflix streaming the episodes, really take advantage and be okay with just not showing one group or the other for an episode at a time, then give them a real focus when you get back, instead of just having them in 2 minute bits that don't even fit together thematically.
Last Airbender managed to split the narrative between Aang and Zuko, but that was only two arcs to follow... and generally Zuko's bit would be much smaller, and the two storylines would have something in common to bind them together. That's not exactly happening here... they're trying to Game of Thrones it... but that doesn't work in 20 minute episodes.
I was pretty happy with season. And again wanting more immediately lol.
9 episodes are not enough unless they're going with a pretty aggressive release schedule like Voltron had.

Well, the first two seasons were five months apart, so… yeah, they're probably going for roughly that pace. And remember, some of the Voltron seasons were only five or six episodes.
At a guess, since they're doing the season "book" titles just like Avatar, they're probably shooting for six seasons, one for each element. And if they're all 9 episodes, that'd put them at 54 episodes. That's enough for syndication, but not quite the old school 65 episodes of syndication, or Voltron's 78.
Season 3 ya'll. I just binged it. I loved it. I hear it's in danger of not getting a 4th season. But I really enjoyed it. So many excellent character and creature designs.
Random.thoughts:
! Throwing in a Wonderwall reference was fantastic.
! Soren was still of of my favorite characters. I loved the Sunfire elves. Viren sittingthrough that creepy eye ritual made me so uncomfortable every time I looked at him. It was the most unsettling thing to me. More than the Sunfire elf queen getting disintegrated.
! The true big bad is still yet to be dealt with. I'm all for a true Aavaros show down. He was so fun just floating around.
The action scenes were so much better too.
. I hear it's in danger of not getting a 4th season. But I really enjoyed it.
Bruh. That would be a letdown considering the unresolved plot points.
! And bummer about the fox-like mount being bitten by that soul-eating cobra, am I right?

Yeah true. But there's not a ton left but at least enough was resolved I wouldn't be mad forever like the Thundercats remake lol.
! Yeah that sucked. Poor thing. Also man soul sucking snakes…That's dark.
! Basically the only stuff left is Viren, Avaaros and Claudia.

Oh shit. I completely forgot about that lol.
Haha. Murder bracelet. That video was almost completely funny but why was Erzan so dumb? Lol.
