I mean I guess it's good that the paid online is cheaper than their competitors? Because it's definitely crappier.
But it's worse than this. Because we're getting literally nothing in terms of actual online infrastructure. They're just charging for it because they can; because it's normal enough that people assume it's just a price you pay. On PS3, online play was free, and worked better than Nintendo does now. Now they force you to get PS+, which is more expensive sure, but it's a real fully-fledged service with tons of perks including regular free games that aren't 30 years old.
I just think it's important to make that distinction because that subscription money is supposed to actually support physical infrastructure and servers, which don't exist with Nintendo. And it's absurd because of how few online Nintendo games even exist (at least ones requiring good connectivity). Their incredibly shitty, joke of a mobile app that any CS student could write as a semester project only even supports Splatoon right now. So… what the fuck, Nintendo?
-
Yeah let's be real here, if you're paying for something, you're paying for actual servers, and given that we're already on a rocky start with MK8D having P2P for online, it does not bode well for the future of online on nintendo.
-
again, Nintendo somehow presents this idea that it's the most family-friendly/fan-centered of the Big Three, and it really is the worst in that regard by a good margin
-
A hacked SNES classic is a better virtual console than Nintendo will ever have, so everyone should just do that. As far as Nintendo charging for shitty online goes… everything about the Switch has involved them cutting corners and raise prices in unacceptable ways. That said, N rarely listens to fans unless it affects their bottom line, so don't pay for online until it's fixed, don't buy a Switch until it gets a sturdier revision, and definitely don't buy those overpriced replacement docks.

Sure, Robo. Complain about the lack of VC and Nintendo selling low-quality hardware and tell people not to buy it, in the same breath that you suggest paying Nintendo/scalpers for low-quality hardware and then hacking it… instead of just using a regular emulator for free like everyone else has been doing since the 90s.
-
A new golden nes mini is coming to Japan only (most likely) Weekly shonen jump themed, it will have only licenses games from manga series, like the first crossover games, early dragon ball stuff and so forth.
I don't like this precedent, that the nes mini can't get new games, legally.
-

Literally just buy some sort of USB controller, and emulate SNES and NES games.
You can even improve their graphics using filters (smoothing out the edges on pixels and stuff).
Like I literally own a functioning SNES with all the great platformers and a few other things, but I still emulate because it's easier and sexier looking.Hacked SNES classic lol.

Anyone tech savvy enough to use an emulator is ALREADY doing that, and would have no reason to take my advice. My post was intended to help people who either can't use emulators or prefer to pay for official Nintendo hardware.
-
So a technologically incompetent person, who can't figure out how to download a program and use it to play games, is going to hack their firmware instead.

That would be simpler, yes. It only takes about five minutes, there are hundreds of guides on Youtube and no additional hardware is required.
-
Getting an emulator takes about 30 seconds, there have been guides everywhere since I remember having internet access, and will run on just about any device for free. You don't think things through at all, Robo.
-
"Man, if only there was some easy, super convenient way of playing games on a computer that I already own and don't need to get any more parts that would otherwise cost me $100.
Ah well, I guess I'll just follow these guides on how to hack the SNES classic."

I spent well over an hour a few months back helping a friend who's bad with computers set up a Sega Genesis emulator. It's not that simple for everyone, even with someone standing by to help.

You're right. And those people also aren't going to think, "hey, I bet this limited-release SNES Classic can be hacked, and that I can look it up and confidently permanently modify my hardware, void its warranty, and enjoy pirated games! That sounds easier and cheaper than emulators."
Also no offense but you guys were doing something wrong if the steps involved more than "download exe, run exe, open ROM file." Okay MAYBE 5 more minutes trying to configure the inputs.
-
-
To be honest, the good SNES emulator looks a lot more intimidating than any other good emulator that I have used.
-
The fact that this discussion happens in the first place speaks volumes to how fucking stupid it is that in the year 2018 it's this difficult to play older games. So I'm blaming Nintendo for this one.
-
Personal preference of mine, but I always try to get the game officially.
-
There is not enough "conservation culture" on Nintendo. It is way too oriented on the next big thing while leaving the past expensive (using the original hardware), retro-blocked (the nes mini being just hdmi enabled nes with a fixed selection of games is just stupid, if the thing had a market I'd have one, even having to swap consoles around and the mini controllers), inaccessible (except YARRRGG), or just irreplicable (anything depending on a server, or a hardware periferial that it's unavailable now).
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Again: Tie my history with my Nintendo ID, let me keep my games on that thing, let me log in to the nes mini and play my nes games, and in the switch all my games.
I'm not buying anything old until this is future proffed.
-

Add "download and install 7zip" and that was basically the process. It took me about ten minutes to walk someone similarly less tech-savvy through the process of modding an nes classic, since the program itself is much easier to work with (no mapping controls, worrying about save state keys or other misc settings) and the console comes with perfectly suitable controllers (a noob isn't likely to have a usb controller laying around or want to spend money on one for a sketchy-sounding free program that they may not be able to get working). Most people also have no idea that software modifications can void the waranty (it's not a hardware mod).Sorry for the unformatted mess of text, my phone does that.
-
For the record, I just clocked ten seconds for finding a working Sega Genesis emu for the Mac and downloading it, and about a minute to download a game, set it up and figure the controls. It took me longer to write this post about it than to do it.
-
Doesn't sound as bad as my first time with Nebula.
-
I'm playing SNES games on emulators for at least 18 years now but i'll be glad to spend some money so i can conveniently play them everywhere on my Switch. A lot of people would, actually.
I understand that Nintendo wants us to play new games and to not spent all our time with retro stuff … but screw that reason! Just give the people what they want and make us happy while you make money off of it!
It's really frustrating that the only thing we get after 1 1/2 years are some NES games. They are killing it with the hard- and software but they are absolutely terrible in providing stuff that should be common in 2018 (no messages between friends?? Voicechat via my phone??).
... Just had to let that out ... the Switch is my first Nintendo home console since the SNES and i love it. But there is just so much unused potential right now ... -
Personal preference of mine, but I always try to get the game officially.
Me, too. I just don't feel right playing emulators. I have never downloaded them. I just want my games legitimately. Sadly, companies make it harder by making each VC/classic title purchasable only on the present system, and then you have nonsense like Nintendo where they just flat out aren't going to do VC anymore on one of the most desirable consoles for VC ever.
Being someone who won't touch emulators, Nintendo just went and made the Wii U more relevant for classic games than the Switch.
-
.Most people also have no idea that software modifications can void the waranty (it's not a hardware mod).
Most people also don't know the relative difficulty of modding a console either.
Generally if you're smart enough to look for those sorts of guides, then you would also be able to install an emulator.
You're also neglecting that you, a person who is clearly more tech savvy than the person that you're helping, was important in walking them through the process.

This video is over two hours long.

Nintendo isn't turning evil.
You can't become evil if you already are.
-
"Hey Nintendo, we did pretty great with making Metroid a good FPS and the revival of the Donkey Kong Country series, what do you say you let us do our very own intellectual property this time?"
"Good idea, Retro Studios! We know that fans have been eager to see what you've been up to! But we've gotta postpone that, we want you to develop a Star Fox racing game no one's been asking for, even though we already have Mario Kart, could finally release a new F-Zero or revive the Diddy Kong Racing series. Nah, that'd be too simple, that's not us. We gotta be innovative!"

The rumoured Mario + Rabbids crossover we all hated at first turned out to be a rather decent strategy game with good design ideas and music from grant kirkhope.
With that in mind, I'll wait until I see game confirmations before I judge the concept. For all we know this could be Nintendo's Rocket League much in the same way Splatoon was their response to online shooters.
Or it could be a battle royale live service game set in space with…. oh noooo, fuck. That's actually a marketable idea that hasn't been done...
-
I swear, Nintendo's almost legendary refusal to be dragged into the 21st century is the price we have to pay for their first party games.
-
But wait…
Life likes to hit you hard sometimes?
-
And now we have this.
https://mynintendonews.com/2018/05/15/nintendo-has-applied-for-15-trademarks-including-f-zero-nintendogs-pikmin/That looks like a bunch of cameos/characters for Smash 5. We're definitely not getting a Wii Music sequel.

That's what I thought too.
There's also a rumor of a Star Fox Grand Prix or something? After Mario/Rabbids anything is possible but that just seems too…"huh?" for me. But hey, jut gotta wait until something is revealed.
-
Unfortunately it's a month before E3, so instead of all of us just waiting nicely for a month we just get rabid leaks and rumors left and right about what's going to be revealed.

that's how it is. The worst thing you can do it get attached to whatever rumor raises your eyebrows ;Y
-
The "leaks" and hysteria reached a point for me where, a couple of years ago, I just flat out stop visiting gaming news websites for the couple weeks leading up to E3. It's tiring and there's so much wrong and fabricated crap and rampant speculation that I practically go into radio silence. If some outlet managed to accurately leak something before the show, good for them.
-
The Pokemon leaks are especially bad. Every week there's a new one and people fall for them each time.

Heads up, N64 Mini incoming.
I apologize for all the monocles I just broke when You all gasped in surprise.
