F-Zero 99 is a blast. I was initially disappointed in getting a battle royale based on the SNES game after 20 years of waiting for a GX sequel, but they really captured everything I like about F-Zero in this game and they even added a new spin on it.
This is the most fun I've had with a videogame since like Smash Ultimate or Metroid Dread, I just can't stop playing -
Fucking harder than original FZero
-
I am VERY bad at F-Zero 99 but boy is it fun.

Well, I'm essentially done with my playthrough of the Super Mario RPG Remake now that I've beaten the main game and post-game bosses and gotten nearly all of the unique items and equipment. May go back and try to get the gold medals on some of the mini-games and try to do the 100 jump challenge (which I was never able to do in the original) if I have time.
As expected, it is a more than worthy remake of the original with a lot of great QOL improvements and a rockin' new soundtrack. But, of course, it still doesn't surpass the original for me, which will always hold a special place in my heart from childhood and beyond. Plus, I feel like the original has more character to it, warts and all.
I don't know how newcomers, on the whole, will react to this came. I've already heard from one person who never played the original that they really couldn't bring themselves to enjoy the combat. And...yeah, I can definitely see that. Super Mario RPG did set the stage for the timed attack combat, but Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi really did go a long way towards refining it.
On the subject, the exclamation point indicator for the remake is one of the things I'm definitely of two minds about. On the one hand, it is nice to finally get clarification on the timing of some attack and block timings (and I have no qualms about the "can't block" indicator), whereas in the original you pretty much had to figure it out for yourself. But on the other hand, and this could just be because I'm a veteran player, but I found that the exclamation point marker tended to throw off my timing sometimes. Thankfully it goes away after a while, but still.
And of course the perfect timing bonus throws a wrench into things to. It's a nice idea, and it is satisfying when you do pull it off, but oftentimes the perfect timing window eluded me to a frustrating degree. Which, eh, I don't know, maybe that's the point to motivate you to get better.
Also, and this isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, but I felt like the remake was shorter than the original. Could just be me getting older, but I think the shortening of the battle animations really played a role here too. Some of the animations in the original were really drawn out, so I guess little time savings like that really add up.
Other thoughts:
-
Thank you GOD for fixing the Yoshi mini-game! Now I can actually beat it!
-
They also fixed the missable hidden chest in Mushroom Kingdom castle! Yay! (of course I still caught it the first time around to be safe).
-
It was fun finding all the name and dialogue changes and what they kept the same. Croaka Cola is so ingenious I'm surprised they didn't think of it the first time around. Speardovich is the worst offender though (seriously, you couldn't have at least called him Spiridovich for something?)
-
The partial 16-bit credits were a nice homage, but the cynic in me thinks the designers just didn't want to bother reanimating that whole sequence.
So yeah, great time overall, and I hope others are enjoying it as well. Next up, since Nintendo of America has proven reluctant to bring the old Fire Emblem games stateside, I'm going to dive in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. Regardless of the actual quality of the game, I still want to play it as a diehard FE fan.

@Nobodyman im just here to say that its my first time playing the Mario RPG and my god does it bring so much more character to the Super Mario world. The only rpg I really played and completed was Superstars saga and I loved it and always thought people viewed the Mario brothers the same way I did with Superstars Saga.
I mean they do but not really. The cast is more one-note than anything for everyone else that has only played the platformers. But man, I can really see how Mario RPG is the heart for everything that happened after. I love it and just wish I have the time to play more (I'm also playing wonder).
It's a good year for Mario.

I kinda agree with all of this; it's been a while since I played the original so I can't even say if the timing window is the same - some moments the ! helps but in others (like Mallow's rain so far) I fuck up the timing every single time and it confounds me.
If you get good enough at the window you'll get meter build up so it does encourage you to get good, but I dunno, I feel like if I get used to all the ! and go back to play the original on a whim, I'd mess up every block.

I've only played it through once (can't get the emulator to work now) but I do recommend every FE fan play through, at least once.

Just about done with chapter 3 and phew this is a beast of a game. Not sure how well I'd get by without guides and save states.

game lets you save every turn for a reason haha, chapters can take upwards to an hour.
highly recommend you keep rotating saves in case it's a sticky situation!

No worries there. Got multiple save states going.
Right now my biggest worry is I may be underleveled as I'm currently at chapter 4 and I see some guides stating I should be able to promote a bunch of my units by now.
That and the pawnshop system is ridiculous, especially when it comes to redistributing rings.
-
Well, the thing is each chapter in Genealogy is easily five chapters in a normal FE game combined into one.
-
Every chapter I started with arena run - it doesn't move turns in the outworld and it's a good way to get your units rolling. It is annoying to not be able to trade like more versions of fe, but money and exp have a feedback loop - get money+exp in the arena, unit A sells their ring to get MORE money while unit B bankrolls their purchase from - the arena.
It's tricky to a handle on it - keeping track of who has what - but towards the end I didn't mind it.
-
Yeah, I'm doing the same thing starting with the arena, but I guess I'm a little behind since I didn't realize I could do it on the first chapter or two. And, unfortunately, some of my units really do struggle with the arena, sometimes not making it past level 3 or 4.
-
yeah some units will blaze through (like Sigurd or Brave weapon users) while others will struggle.

Do you think at the game awards they’ll reveal the new 3D Mario game, there’s got to be a new one soon right?
Hopefully it’s open world
-
I’m not thinking so being you just had the LOTSA remake & Wonder drop. With the Peach game coming out next year?
If anything they should be getting to work on Mario Kart 9 now that the last track pack came out.

Do you ever think they’d add characters from Paper Mario or Mario and Luigi series into Mario Kart?

No but I’ve occasionally wondered why they’ve never added Paper Mario to the Smash games
-
Paper Mario is kind of spin-offy enough to end up as only music/stage/spirit references? Mario & Luigi's studio AlphaDream even went bankrupt so that series is even in need of rescuing.
-
A soulsborne crab game on the Nintendo switch?
Also when the hell will the next 3D Mario game be announced
And how the hell will they outdo Odyssey
