Chapter 791: "Rubble"

I know it's been annoying seeing Becca cry constantly and seeing her character show very little development but let me just say I can see her looking up to Luffy after this finding a devil fruit of her own and down the road redeeming the HELL out of herself which would be great story telling. She is a product of her environment she has been treated worse than most of us could ever imagine but seeing Luffy actually take down her life's version of basically all that is evil may spark that hope in her and she can hopefully prove to be a great ally in the future.

Let's not forget she is with Luffy right now so if Doffy does stand up and make a speedy final charge at Luffy and Becca stabs Doffy in the face finishing the bastard it will feel so right.

I'm expecting Doffy to either stand up again/ get pounced on by Jesus and his fruit stolen/ or CP0 to come retrieve his body.

I tried to offer a possible light at the end of the tunnel because people just want to complain about her without thinking long term, and if there is something taking up panels that much usually we expect it to mean something more than just showing 20 face shots of a character you should be rooting for being weak (to be fair).

Way too many people from all around the New World were involved (try reading it out loud, awesome) for it to get covered up efficiently. Not to mention Abusa may already be watching. Even if the press release fools the people in Blues and Paradise, it won't last for long. Besides, cover up won't cause nearly as much chaos as news that Strawhat took down an important ally of both WG and one of Yonkou.

As I have learned at my job training some years ago...I will start with the positives...

Some characters have been great as Bartolomeo… And I really loved the main point of the story and Dressrosa as location... I think it could be much better told without the skipping and without too many focusing on different plots. But I will come to it later
DoFlamingo is a real bad-ass… Love him.
The flashback of Law has been great as well and Corazon death was really touching

But now… the cons

Too many characters… While some characters as Bartolomeo, who is one of my favs, are great it really have been too much... I understand that Luffy should make allies... But well this was over the top. Best example... For what use was Kyujin? You know the female guardian of the smile factory... There was absolute no use besides doing this realy shitty „a fight among men and now shut up girl“ story... One of the worst characters ever
Too much „drama“… The flashbacks of Law, Rebecca/Kyros or the kingdom as whole... Together with the mix of the poor dwarves and even flashbacks fom villians as Senor Pink. I understood that DoFla and Co are assholes right on the spot... so there was no need in my eyes to force it upon us ... Just look at Croc. Vivi has been a princess as well. The sad story was simple Croc is an asshole wanted to overtake Arabasta and boom that's it. Same for Enel and Co.
Too many plot driven powers… The worst of them all is actually BIRDCAGE... Holy shit... I think I do not have to explain why... But further more the godly Law's fruit who now even one of the main plot points... Side Dfs are introduced to be essential for the victory or story... Mansherry, Pica, Sugar... All Dfs with powers just to push the story. Maybe not that bad... But if felt so damn forced... And of course the re-introduction of AWAKENING wihtout explanation again...
Way too long and the whole skipping left and right destoyed some tension of the events… Best example is Zoro vs Pica... Or even the other fights... Everyone NOW IT starts... next chapter oh wait an other event... Some chapters later again... But now!!! Naaah fooled... Where is the on point story telling? You know as in former arcs.... Example... Zoro vs Mr 1... Fight from the start to the end... Way more tension than this skipping.
Sabo and even more Fujitora… Won't even start... Everyone knows what I mean
Usopp's run away scene… Holy shit...
Some really strange haki shit… Bellamy breaking through Luffy. Everyone and their mother has hardening... Don Chinjao even has CoC... Than Diamante hyped this clash of CoC users and everyone went OMG finally we will see the real battle use of CoC... And what happened against DoFla... NOTHING.
The whole story overall… Just a repeating of Arabasta just with more characters and even more annoying crying princesses... Slowly One Piece starts to feel like a Mario game... Always save the Peach. Same goes for too much plots at once. Here the SAD, there the Mera Mera, look at the poor dwarves and everything...
And of course the lack of HALF OF THE Strawhats in the very first MAJOR arc in the New World. Of course they maybe have something bigger to do now… Still they are missing... What's pisses me even more off is the whole Viola/Sanji relationship... So much built up... Now we most likely will never see a proper goodbye between them.

The next ending chapters could bring some nice new stuff…. But it won't change this points after all

Same here, Myu. Technically I enjoy any series that shows is doing well. I do not get carried away by trifles, let alone people complaining about developments that have already happened in one way or another in previous arcs.

So I'm glad too see I'm not the only one who thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the Dressrosa arc.

Law and Luffy vs Don , Trebol and Bellamy but most of time it end up being 1 on 1.
You can see oda made sure than luffy and law did not fight don by him self for to long.

I share basically the same thoughts about this arc…mainly the first con you raised(I mean: Kanjuro, Rebecca,Kinemon, Hajrudin,Bo,Ideo,Riku...ergh...too many boring characters at once.)
Also, since the day it was revealed that powerhouse Sabo was on dressrosa,I honestly never felt that Doflamingo would truly pose a serious threat to Strawhats's lives.If at least Doflamingo actually had killed someone in the present time in a shocking way...I don't known...maybe the sense of danger would come back.
Well...I guess it doesn't matter anymore:Dressrosa is finally coming to an end. Whatever happens next, I just hope that the majority of these cons don't find a way into Oda's story again.

You might not be aware of how the anime is now, then…
There will be flashbacks, long pauses/pans/stills, saying a sentence now and then, maybe one attack in the episode, then repeating all that other stuff for the rest of it
I never thought I'd wish for an opening for the anime to be able to create filler arcs again

Too bad she looks almost too much like Robin, Violet would make a decent strawhat. She has a fairly unique and powerful devil fruit she could be the crews dancer/ interrigator / scout /battle tactician, she's royalty and comparable to Nami and Robin in beauty (Sanji agrees). She's also a former member of a shichibukai's crew although under very different circumstances than Robin. I'd rather have Momo but Violet is up there on my list of who I could see fitting in with the strawhats. ( I know it won't happen just making conversation).

I tried to consistently color code them roughly according to importance, (main chars - main villains - main "others", secondary/tertiary ditto) some might disagree with some choices and I have might have messed some up. But the point is pretty clear. Dress Rosa has both far more important characters and far more characters overall. The number of factions is much higher too. Obviously "Gladiators" isn't actually one faction, but it would have gotten ridiculous to name all those kingdoms and organizations.

And you have to keep in mind that length isn't the only consequence of this. It takes longer to deal with them all, yes, but it also means that much more changing scenes and focus to avoid some characters being left hanging for far too long and being treated very unevenly. For me that has been one of the largest issues with the arc.

I felt like this chapter was really short, may be it's me, i don't know…
But i'm glad this is over, really, this arc was long but mostly filled with so many characters that were actually important and took part in the huge fight which is for me a premiere in manga, all those side characters took an important place and Luffy got help from them, the crew is not even reunited since half of the guys are on the sunny and we don't know what they went through (i'm now eager to see what's happening).

I'm surely happy that Doffy got his ass kicked, now if only he does not escape and get finally jailed for what he did all around the world for so long.

Okay I finally thought of something else to say about this chapter. I find it interesting that Oda definitely was not trying at all to replicate/surpass the smile on Luffy's face after Alabasta's end, or Enies Lobby's end. It was more low-key, in regards to Luffy.

Also can I just say that Law was drawn cool as hell this chapter? You can slowly see the art transform through this series, and sometimes there's – intentional or not -- hints to how it's going to look in the future. I feel this may be one of those times. I just liked the "uneven" way he was drawn. You could feel his breath slowly escaping as he transported Luffy to safety.

¿You really think that its over? I don't have that feeling, it's like come on, Oda wrote a lot about Doflamingo with all those flashbacks and his "own" tragedy. I don't think he will end like that. If he does, for me, it's a wasted fight. Doflamingo wasn't taking Luffy seriously and he didn't even used ¡Conqueror's Haki! and also this is a fight about Celestial Dragon's and D's. ¿Where are the D's powers? ¿Wheres Luffy using Luck or something related to D's? He used Gear 4 okay, but the point was that the D's where Celestial Dragons natural enemies because they had "something" different. Where Oda put that in "that" fight?

And also, Doflamingo wants to become the Pirate King, wheres his pride? Why showing Doflamingo talking about becoming "Pirate King" and none of these words were in his mouth fighting Luffy? I think it's a little bit bizarre introducing a concept like that and that the villain don't retalk about that.

Doflamingo lost the country, lost his family, his eyeglasses and now his pride. ¿I'm the only one thinking that he will wake up and go rampage this time?

Doffy gonna stand up and start crying like Becca. Then he's gonna explain some crazy shit and then boom heescapes. I could see him begging Law to finish him off and Law wanting to so bad but hesitating just enough for CPO to grab Doffy and the middle CP0 guy COC blasting the whole island and when they all wake up the island is back to normal (the dwarves for some reason aren't affected by haki nor are they able to use it for some reason so Mansherry and the gang put in work while everyone was haki blasted to sleep. Also Fujitora's is gone by the time everyone wakes up and Sabo and Jesus are sleeping back to back forest Gump style both all banged up.

I have to agree with you Fleet Admiral Akainu, ever since the dashing older brother made his return to Dressrosa and also the fact that an admiral is betting on our protagonist to win there was really no sense of danger whatsoever. Another interesting point someone brought up, this arc had too many moments where the villain could have killed their opponent but stalled in doing so by shit talking and allowing them to catch their breath (looking at Diamanté vs Rebecca, Doflamingo vs Law to name but a few prime suspects) what happened to the ruthless Doffy we saw in the flashback that did away with his brother with not much to say? Doffy did shoot Law, fair enough but when someone is at your mercy why fire a few bullets into them and then fly them to your castle and let them come up with yet another plan to get out of their current predicament? I think how Doffy was built up to be, he looked like he was going to really do some major damage, but I don't think he's killed a single named character this entire arc? At least Crocodile impaled Luffy and buried him alive in the sand. How can Doffy be more badass than the likes Croc and Lucci, who pretty much told Luffy he will kill his nakama after he defeats him.

Point being, absolutely no one's life FELT like it was in danger, not even when Rebecca was almost made to strike Viola. Even when Law's arm got torn off the magical pixie was always at hand to undo that damage later on.(oh, another example of someone stalling and not outright killing someone when they could do so very easily)

When Doffy was about to kill Smoker I was so hyped for him, I really was, he seemed like the no nonsense type of villain. But as soon as we were brought back to his home turf he got shot by the nerf gun? It's a shonen manga so I suspect Oda doesn't expect his audience to dissect his work so much, I mean if the Japanese are happy then he's happy, right?

thanks for that break down its nice to actually see it.

i just hope that this arc will serve to speed up the rest of the new world. for example Oda wont need to introduce these characters when he runs into them again on different islands so the plots can be tighter in the future, while still having many character interactions.

Switching the sarcasm off for now: Could we please turn it down with the calling people whiny crying bitches and all that? Especially when they're actually trying to analyze and articulate gripes with the chapter beyond "THIS SUX NOTHING HAPPEND"?! Seriously guys.

As for me, I thought the chapter was perfectly serviceable. It was a bit much to have the subtext made text like that (The cage is gone! Symbolizing the end of Doffys oppresion and stuff!) but when its Dressrosa Tubiflex doing it, it kinda works. Gatz and his announce-or-die shtick has been pretty great. Really, this chapter was pretty much exactly as I epected it, based on Odas track record.
"Oda has done it before! Its a trend!" doesn't automatically equal this chapter being exempt from criticism however, and I do think this is less interesting than the Alabasta or Skypea post villain-KO chapters. This chapter simply isn't as visually interesting as seeing the simultaneous crash landings of Croc and Luffy or the zoom out to rain above Alabasta, and doesn't really have anything as Iconic as Luffys silhouette in the sky.
Well, it has Rebecca crying a river on Luffys face, which is memorably silly looking.

So basically you read the points you wanted to while ignoring the rest ? But yes lets bitch about the pace of an arc that isn't even finished yet .

People can say what they want about the pacing of this arc when 1) it's finished and 2) when they have actually re-read the entire thing .

Doffy kept Law alive because he wanted him to do the immortality ritual, thought that was pretty clear. Even then he almost said F it and almost killed Law anyway but Luffy saved him from getting g his head smashed by Doffy's dutch-ass shoes.

But Doflamingos thousand arrow attack was mentioned in his flashback. Where the citizens would shoot 1000 arrows at the celestial dragons.

Which is something that i don't think anyone here is arguing against . Dressrosa pacing isn't perfect but that in itself does not justify people repeating the same shit over and over and over again every single week . This shit is about to be on the same level as Fuji and Birdcage weekly discussion in terms of how redundant it is .

I think if one made a list of the characters in Dress Rosa compared to say, Arabasta or Skypiea, it would become pretty apparent that the number of characters could be a real problem.

I might have forgotten some, I didn't try to be absolutely exhaustive. I tried to consistently color code them roughly according to importance, (main chars - main villains - main "others", secondary/tertiary ditto) some might disagree with some choices and I have might have messed some up. But the point is pretty clear. Dress Rosa has both far more important characters and far more characters overall. The number of factions is much higher too. Obviously "Gladiators" isn't actually one faction, but it would have gotten ridiculous to name all those kingdoms and organizations.

And you have to keep in mind that length isn't the only consequence of this. It takes longer to deal with them all, yes, but it also means that much more changing scenes and focus to avoid some characters being left hanging for far too long and being treated very unevenly. For me that has been one of the largest issues with the arc.

How about Doffy rushes at Luffy and Becca realizes she has to attack so she goes for a stab to the head but right before her shitty sword strikes, Law switches it with his which he coverd with hakI and it cuts right through Doffy's face and we never get to see his other eye.

I don't think the characters were left too long. That's what I said, in order to avoid that (because that would be really bad) Oda had to scene switch like crazy and jump around with the focus nearly the whole arc. That's what I found to be a huge problem with the arc, one of its biggest weaknesses in fact. There are so many characters that there just wasn't enough panel time to go around to give everyone their due in a satisfying manner. That was a non-issue in other arcs because of their much smaller casts.

The bigger cast is what made this arc so great imo .
I guess it was satisfying to me how certain characters were done knowing that we most likely going to see some again.

If the dwarves were kicked, less time focused on the Rikus and the missing SHs came back I'd be pretty happy. A big cast can be an asset but going too far can, and imo did, cause problems.

I know it's been annoying seeing Becca cry constantly and seeing her character show very little development but let me just say I can see her looking up to Luffy after this finding a devil fruit of her own and down the road redeeming the HELL out of herself which would be great story telling. Time was the main problem in this arc, characters got underdeveloped due to the massive amount of "real world time" it was gonna take Oda to develop them.

It felt like Oda was playing with a hourglass and made it at the last drop.

When she first spoke with Luffy she said she was going to win the Mera Mera so that she can kill Doffy and save her people (she is the future ruler of that island and it's her home so she wants to save it more than most characters I don't see Riku doing shit) she also has done nothing worth mentioning to help the fight against Doffy besides help deliver a key so how would it be the worst possible ending it wouldn't be that out of place, you act like I said the funk brothers should finish him off. I definitely don't mind your opinion but try not to over exaggerate/ shut down someone's crackpot theory without giving a shred of reason as to why it's SO unbelievable.

I enjoy chapters like these. I feel for almost every character in this chapter, especially Gatz and Kyros. Too bad for you soulless devils out there! ;)

Getting jailed would be too much of a light punishment to someone who made the lives of many miserable for years and went as far as to slaughter an entire country, let alone the fact he literally said he only wanted to watch the world burn.
