Aokiji had no choice in the matter. The gorosei gave Spandam carte blanche.
Chapter 780: "The Heart's Curse"
-
-
Sky Island Arc in a nutshell. It had little to nothing to contribute to the main overall story either…
Skypiea is the crew living out Blackbeards proclamation on Jaya…the core message of the series.
-
It's nice to get worldbuilding and trivia, but I don't especially think it was worth it an entire arc.
Honestly, Skypiea feels like an experiment; something Oda originaly had no plans to include in, but decided to do it when it turned out he was able to go beyond his original four years plan.
Tying that to the main story and main characters properly is a problem here, not One Piece focusing on adventure and side characters. And let's be honest here, adventure part does not appear that much in the main story aside from Skypiea.
Which actually makes Skypiea more "right" than most other arcs. Luffy's drive to seek out adventure is a major driving force of the plot, perhaps the strongest one of all. His closely related penchant for romance is also a driving force of the plot. Both are driving forces of Skypiea more than any other arc. More importantly, Skypiea (and its prequel Jaya) is thematically a real home run of the series. Most Shounen manga have friendship and etc. as major themes and so does OP, this is what's seen in arcs like Enies Lobby. But One Piece also has dreams, adventure and romance as arguably even more central themes than camaraderie, and it stands out for having those themes. There is no arc in the series in which this comes through stronger than in Skypiea, which also has the friendship theme going strong (most prominently w/ Norland & Calgara). The fact that many other arcs fail to strongly include some of these themes is more of a problem with those arcs than it's a problem with Skypiea for doing so. Skypiea may not have the most dense congregation of "important" characters or progress the plot points pertaining to the WG and Marines the most, but it's arguably the arc closest to the core themes and driving forces of what gives One Piece its unique identity. As such, it's perhaps the most One Piece-y arc in the series.
As for it not contributing much to the main plot, saying that is somewhat misleading. One reason for that is that One Piece is more episodic than people often let on. This is especially the case earlier in the series. The main plot, such as it is, wasn't really that big of a deal at the time. There was just the ongoing theme of Luffy, driven by his will to adventure, explore, see new places and meet new people, traveling from island to island and, together with his crew, getting involved in whatever was going on there. Skypiea didn't contribute significantly less than Arabasta or Thriller Bark, neither of which seem to get flack for not contributing much. Just because Luffy beat a Shichibukai in each doesn't make them progress the main plot more; the Shichibukai as a group may be more closely tied to the main plot than Enel & goonies, but unless their defeats actually progress said plot in some other way than Luffy growing stronger by defeating a new enemy, they don't progress it more than Enel's defeat did. A good contrast is with Doflamingo in this arc. His defeat is bound to be highly plot-significant because of the domino effect his fall will cause. But Croc & Moria's defeats were just covered up and the only real consequence was that Luffy's infamy grew among those who were aware. Maybe people also get the impression of Skypiea being less relevant because it took place up in the sky rather than as the next island of the blue sea, making it feel as though the Straw Hats' forward progression ceased. But that's false since it could just as easily have been a blue sea island.
It's not just world-building and trivia that we got from Skypiea either. That Roger went up there and was tracing the poneglyphs across the GL was a crucial piece of information. We learned that the Shandians used to be part of the Ancient Kingdom that fought the WG. There's also speculation on the possible future importance of the sky/moon people. This is information directly tied to the actual underlying main plot, not mere setting details.
Apologizes for the somewhat off-topic, somewhat lengthy rant; I love Skypiea an awful lot and often feel the need to defend it against certain types of criticism, especially the very common "it wasn't relevant to the main plot" one, which is understandable but in my opinion wrong.

Not a rant at all, that was pretty righteous. It's true the adventure element has never been as prominent as in Skypiea, and that's one of the many things that make that arc so special.
I honestly think Skypiea (+ Jaya, we need the whole package) is among the best 5 arcs in action/adventure mangas. At least, that I've read.
-
We have seen Doflamingo temporarily bind Jozu before so I wouldn't be so sure about Zoro's chances of cutting what seems to be Dofla's strongest string. Then again, cutting diamond and binding it isn't very comparable so I'll show myself out
. .
-
When I was much younger I had seen the English dubbed version of One Piece two, three times. Didn't watch subbed anime back then. But then I did, cus I really wanted to continue watching this series.
And so Skypiea was the first arc coming of Alabasta. And I have such fond memories of that time. It was an excellent adventure. The 16-year-old me especially enjoyed those feet-thingies the Sha-something people used to traverse the battlefield while shooting bazookas. And it was early in the series. No Yonkou, no Revs. Just one Shichibukai. It wasn't a side-mission for me. It was just adventuring - and in retrospect, adventuring before the Straw Hats start taking involved in more world-changing events and battles.
I imagine many readers felt the same way, especially the demographic audience.
But we're older and all to philosophical of late, so …

Does not change the fact that shifting the burnden of proof is a move I consider at best distasteful.

about that stuff…I didn't like how the idea of using Pluton came from Spandam.
It was like:
Spandam: "hey, why don't we use the plans of Pluton instead of destroying it? Then we can crush all the pirates!"
Gorosei: "hey, that's actually not a bad idea, let's do this".Seeing this idiot persuading the Gorosei was weird.

I totally forgot about it. -
I think it's that they thought he, complete idiot that he is, could not possibly find the real blueprints, nor aquire them, for that matter.
Which is why they said they would talk after having aquired them.
Just an alternative interpretation.
-
I actually think it was combination of both.
It's not like Ace gave them reasons to think otherwise. And we did see him casually ending several ships of Crocodile's minions, as well as an Island. I sincerely doubt he got his bounty for good behaviour, otherwise Garp would probably far less willing to stand by.
Hey, it was quite clearly only HALF an island! And those were bad guys' ships anyway!
Nah, nobody's debating Ace's destructive power, especially since Robotnik basically described the Mera Mera no Mi as a WMD. I don't think he could have had that dangerous of a reputation or the WG wouldn't have offered him a Shichibukai position. It's more likely that he earned his bounty through fighting other pirates and defending his freedom and crew. I think his post-Sabo upbringing was good enough that he would try to ignore most civilians unless they really goaded him.
-
Now, this I wonder about. Has the board reached any conclusion as to what Gear Fourth would actually be like? What would it do? Do we have any theories regarding that?
Blame my lack of imagination, I actually have nothing.
It can beat Admirals:ninja:

Has anyone found the page where it was implied that Spandam stole the Golden Den Den? I seem to remember him acting suspicious when someone asked where he got it from.
All I can find is the page where the Vice Admirals said the orders from Aokiji included not harming Nico Robin.
Spandam seemed to think that they were avoiding firing on the bridge because he was there. Aokiji was prepared to use the Buster Call if needed, so I would think he would have filled Spandam in on the details if he had actually handed it over and gave him permission to use it.
-
Has anyone found the page where it was implied that Spandam stole the Golden Den Den? I seem to remember him acting suspicious when someone asked where he got it from.
It was Nico Robin, if I remember, who asked Spandam why they would give him the Buster Call.
The instance where Spandam lied as I remember it was after Robin had boarded the Going Merry, and he said Aokiji had ordered the ship to be fired. That was a lie; he 'speech thought' so himself.
Don't remember anything about the Buster Call being stolen.
-

Point taken, but on the other hand no civilians in Alabasta showed any sign of recognizing him. I think he was strong but not dangerous to civilians or disposed to really oppose the WG before joining Whitebeard. Should've been more specific.
-
Are we implying that Spandam of all people managed to steal a device intended for destroying islands from a freaking navy admiral?
Wait, not even that, from bloody Kuzan? Are you suggesting that after Ohara he was so careless with it?
I find it far more believeable that Aokiji just didn't fill Spandam in on the details because he was sure not even he could be stupid enough to actually call the Buster Call in, nor would he need too.
-
Wasn't Spandam using the Golden Den-Den a mistake too?
like he grabbed it in place of his normal one and accidentally the Enies Lobby -

I think of some method of power storage for instant relase. Something based on idea of crossbow.
Like Luffy straining his muscles with one arm for an attack and at same time stopping relase of storred energy with his other arm. Also lately I thought that perhaps Luffy might be capable of using his fruit to gather energy from hits- turning physicall shock from enemys attack into counter- like transfer of damage back to enemy. Perhaps with help of CoA hardening. Rubber is perfect for bouncing off attacks so why not to learn redirecting that shock?
Something along lines of Tekkai Utsugi that Lucci shown.Still there might be no new gear but fullbody gear second, CoC haki and new very strong attacks that Luffy didnt seen need of using as they can "kill" enemy.

What, like turning himself into an impact dial? That's an interesting idea.
I'm sure that Luffy won't need to come up with something new. This is his first serious opponent since the timeskip, and he's fighting the same caliber of opponent that he was losing to before, the very reason there WAS a timeskip. If he can't win this one, what was the point? Of course, like you said, Luffy surely has a bunch of new tricks that we just haven't seen, since he's never needed to use them. And hey, if he just powers straight through Doffy after all, at least it's still better than Bleach.

Something like Dial exactly.
He had contact with Luccis Rokougun and earlier on he gotten to know what Dials are so him working on some technique with energy gathering, redirecting is a possibility.
We have even red hawk - maybe Hawk is named differently than normal jet gattling with CoA hardening because some shockwave goes with it?I mean that CoA hardened gattling without fire doesnt seem to differ at all from this weeks Hawk Gattling. With Red Hawk we already have some heat shockwave going through somebody hit by it.
Who knows.. in 4 days we will get to know most probably more about how Luffy kicks ass after 2 years of training when he goes all out -

…well, Luffy won't let me down.

So i was thinking the fight between Luffy and Doffy started out as a two vs two but for a while now it has been a one vs two, all that happen was Luffy got tagged in for Law. I can't really see Law fighting again this Arc , the only thing i can see him doing in the end is switching Doffy personality which is also far fetched. Right now things don't look good for Luffy and it is obvious Oda is trying to stop persons from aiding him. First thing he did was found something to stop Fujitora, then we can assume that he is using Burgess to stop Sabo and now he is using the birdcage shrinking to stop the other fighters from interfering, which brings me to the question, how will Luffy overcome both Doffy and Trebol?. There are several possibilities that have been brought to the forefront. I realise that last chapter Viola was talking specifically to Zoro which leave me to wonder if Oda intends for Zoro to aid Luffy. I guess we might find out next chapter. Anyway i can see several things happening
1. Cavendish/hakuba interfering
2. Luffy use a new technique with incredible speed to send Trebol flying. The reason why it is hard for me to see this as the same situation with Bluno is because Luffy took him on one on one but this is a totally different scenario.
3. As i mention before Zoro getting to take a shot at another executiveI can't really see Luffy beating both Doffy and Trebol together as that in my opinion would be a poor representation of Doffy as a final Boss and it would make Luffy way overpowered. I know that it is most people guess that Luffy will find someway to get rid of Trebol but that in itself must be presented as something spectacular and convincing. Honestly i think sooner or later Doffy will lose his cool, he will get a report shortly about the princess escape and it can either be him sending Trebol to retrieve her or as soon as he gets that bit of information Trebol is blown away before his eyes backing him into a corner then he will go apeshit and we will see is beast mode, therefore allowing us to get a full on clash of CO users.

Complaining about the complainers on a rubber pirate manga thread is really damn smart too.
And believe it or not, I've actually seen people considering some of Darth's points seriously and even discussing them with him without blowing their fan fuse.
it's silly to see a one legged dude beat up one of Dofla's top executives. In the end it doesn't look like Kyros is strong (since he hasn't been shown doing anything special), it looks like Diamante is weak as fuck, since he got taken down by a man who shouldn't even be able to use his remaining leg. Nice job, genius."

There is no way Luffy can beat both of them at once, unless he beats Trebol in an instance and manage to focus on Doffy hard. I would think it's kind off a wasted opportunity for a tagteam battle and a waste of Trebol's power ( like, why would he even be there in the first place? ). I think Law's final contribution could be him doing something that temporarily distracts Doflamingo which makes sure Luffy can take him out with some epic shit that kicks Doffy's soul into another dimension. Sort of like how in the final battle against Cell, Gohan manages to destroy Cell thanks to Vegeta distracting him temporarily.
The thing is, at this rate the ending is basically impossible to predict. Sure, Doffy will go down, but how is basically impossible to foresee.

Maybe his new attack could be inspired by King Punch
I think he might be able to do something alike to Kings Punch during next arc - I know he seen it and he learned soru in a blink of an eye back in the day but fight with Doflamingo seems to be too serious to try out something that he has only some very basic idea. I would see him doing something inspired by Kings Punch after some time, same as he came up with gears after being beaten by Kuzan.

You know, if Sakazuki was as evil as people make him out to be, Fujitora would never have made it into his marines. And most certainly not into position of power such as Admiral.
Sakazuki personally apologized to Fujitora for all the confusing orders at Dressrosa. And spared Aokiji when he really didn't have to.
Also, Oda felt comfortable giving him a cover page of cutting a bonsai tree in a totally not-evil way. Akainu gets a bum rap as "1D Xealot Evilman", but theres a human being in there too.

In One Piece there's usually a reason why people act the way they do. And it's often hidden in their past. Like with Dofla, Moria, Fisher Tiger, Arlong, Strawhats, Whitebeard, Ace etc.
Who knows what kind of childhood or past Akainu had to make him so dedicated to following orders and not leaving anything up to chance. Wonder if we'll ever get to know something about it.
Or he's just written like that without any backstory, but the way he talked seemed to hint he experienced those "evils" he talked about on his own skin or the skin of people close to him.

True. He shows way too much human emotions to his fellow marines for him to be a true psychopath or one note character.
I know some people wanted to tie bonsai to him being totaly extremist, because he supposedly cut too many branches, but I will have you note that there are bonsais created in such style. It's called literati, or bunjin-gi, if I recall correctly.

Let's get back to talking about topics related to this current chapter. Do you think that everyone on the former royal plateau will actually do something to impact what's going on? They are joining King Riku to help the citizens, but could it lead to more than that? A conflict with the Marines for example.
-

That would make no sense.
Unless Fujitora decides to help out Dofla and take care of former king and everyone helping him, which would still make no sense, considering his decision making process.

I honestly don't know. Shonen (and by extension One Piece) logic would dictate they won't interfere so that Luffy can have his one-on-one with the final Arc villain.
Conflict with the marines would be non-sensical. Then again, Oda evidently enjoys making Fujitora do non-sensical stuff, so who knows?

Whether he has a tragic backstory or not, Sakazuki, too, is following his dreams and fighting for his ideals. You don't have to agree with him to think that he's doing what he believes is the right thing to do.
I'm not going to try and say that he's anything other than an antagonist, but I have a hard time believing that what he's doing is entirely wrong. From a utilitarian standpoint, he's absolutely correct. Furthermore, people in the One Piece world believe that pirates are the bad guys, and more centrally, that the marines are the good guys. What would Sakazuki have done if he knew about Arlong taking over some islands in East Blue? Roasted that punk. If he knew that Nezumi was taking bribes from Arlong? Roasted that punk. If he knew that Crocodile was taking over a kingdom from one of the founding families by framing said family? Roasted that punk. Make no mistake, he doesn't like the Shichibukai any more than Fujitora does.
Hey, compelling villains in One Piece. Great Even Luffy only goes against the marines when they get in his way, or he decides that they're in the wrong. He was happy to see Smoker in Punk Hazard, and gave him a lot of respect, too.
I know all of this has been discussed to death and it's nothing new, but it's still pretty interesting. That's why One Piece is good, right?
As far as current stuff goes, there's no way the marines are going against the Straw Hats again in this arc. Fujitora's betting on them aside, they're fighting with the (er, "one of the?") royal family against a not-that-popular-right-now Shichibukai. They're too well-liked for the world government to start a fight over…at least until they leave the island.

Way too much human emotions to some of his fellow marines, SOME but i really believe that just like Z he had bad experience with Pirate in is past or maybe is father was someone like Drake father who he look up to and he left the marine and became a pirate.
-
Way too much human emotions to some of his fellow marines, SOME
Pretty sure he did not considered them fellow marines at the time, if you are talking about Coby the Mutinier and Random Deserter Guy.
It's not like he doesn't live his beliefs; if anything, he is actually a lot more truthful to them then the supposed good marines, because he doesn't need to sideline himself to allow pirates to do his job for him. He throws himself into toughest combat times and times again during the war and he singlehandedly turned the failure into succes.
