Underground american with influence from The Stooges and The Velvet Underground and inspired by hardcore punk, post-punk and no wave. Sonic Youth can be desribed as a band that doesn't really "rock", but helped define what noise in rock should sound like. Of course they have changed under the years since.
What can I say? The album Dirty has followed me since I was one year old. Sonic Youth are icons and their influence is just amazing. I visited an exhibition at Malmö a few years ago, both Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore really feel at home with the art movement. Now it has been a while since I listened to them though…. If anyone have recommendations for some lost tapes, demos or downloads you can post and discuss in this thread.
Here's a list of their discography: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Youth_discography for anyone interested.
After their latest tour Moore and Gordon announced an impending divorce, the future of the band is therefore unknown.
